Middle School Boys Missing Since 2005

UPDATED: 11:41 pm EST February 9, 2009

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The heartbroken family members of two boys who disappeared four years ago said they won't stop looking until their loved ones are back home.

Tuesday marks the anniversary of the disappearance of Mark Degner and Bryan Hayes. The two boys were 12 and 13 years old when they vanished without a trace after walking off the campus of Paxon Middle School in 2005.

On Monday, Degner mother, Linda Alligood, said although some time has passed every day with her son is painful.

"Nobody has seen them. Nobody saw which way they went. It's like they disappeared," Alligood said.

As she spoke about her son and his friend, she held a flier with two photos of people she doesn't even recognize. The pictures on the fliers were altered to show what the boys would look like four years after the last time they were seen.

"Not a day goes by that I don't think about him," Alligood said.

She said information that has come out since the boys' disappearance puts the boys on the baseball field behind the school. That was the last time anyone saw them.

"Not knowing if he's OK, if he's safe or one day is he going to call and say, 'Come get me.' One day is he going to show up at my doorstep? It's hard," Alligood said.

She said she believes both boys walked away from school on purpose and were planning to run away, but she said it wasn't supposed to end the way it has.

"Knowing my son, he was supposed to come home that same night," Alligood said.

Alligood wants the community to remember her son and his friend, not just on the anniversary of their disappearance, but every day.

A billboard with the missing boys' pictures is on Interstate 95.

"We still love them. It doesn't matter, we just want them home," Alligood said.

Anyone with information about any missing person can call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS to give authorities tips. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The fear Haleigh Cummings’ family is dealing with is the same thing two Jacksonville families felt four years ago. It was on February 10, 2005 that two boys, Mark Degner and Bryan Hayes, vanished after leaving PaxonMiddle School. While family members still hope and pray for their safe return, they've also made it a mission to help other families who have missing loved ones.
"For anybody else it's a day on the calendar, but the tenth of February is definitely the day four years ago that our entire family changed,” said Angie Campbell, Degner’s aunt.
The days since the boys’ disappearance have been tough for their families.
"We woke up [Tuesday] with a very heavy heart,” said Campbell. “Through the day we pull strength from each other and God, and we will pull through it."
Years ago, they created a group that meets at the Denny's on Atlantic Boulevard the second Tuesday of every month. At the restaurant, family and friends of the two boys along with others who have lost or missing loved ones meet to share a meal and their pain.
"Families [like ours] know what we’re dealing with,” said Degner’s Aunt Tanya Nhiev. “When we get together, we’re able to talk and able to help each other and get through the hard times."
It's a small close knit group they hope never grows, but they will always welcome those that need it. They say faith and the belief they will see their loved ones again gets them through; the same advice they now give to the Cummings family.
"Do not lose hope. I don't think there’s anything worse than that feeling of hopelessness,” said Campbell. “I can’t say why people go through things like this but never give up. Never give up until you have the answers you need."

Wow, really sad background on both of these boys. I sure hope that some
3rd party did not promise them a better life and then do them harm.
Just does not sound like a typical run away case to me either. After 3 years and no one has seen either of these boys. Just does not sound good to me.

Tragic.
Prayers for the families.

$5000 Reward Offered in Search For Missing Boys
Edited by Kyle Meenan Created: 2/21/2005 3:41:00 PM Updated: 2/23/2005 7:04:55 PM
By First Coast News Staff

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Justice Coalition, along with the families of two missing 12-year-olds, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to their safe return.

Bryan Hayes and Mark Degner told friends they were going to run away, before they disappeared without a trace from Paxon Middle School on February 10.

Late Sunday night, the aunt of a third boy who was supposed to join them, contacted First Coast News saying her nephew knew of a spot far away from Paxon where the boys could go to hide.

After several hours of searching on Monday, the JSO detectives were once again, empty handed, though optimistic about talking to the woman's nephew who claimed to know about the missing boys.

"That same tip that you (First Coast News) received, we're going to follow up on it a little bit more. There's another young man that we would like to talk with, of course, and his mom, and go from there," said Sgt. Geisenburg.

It was another lead. Another search. But still no boys.

"We again appreciate the media's help and the community's input, and if there are tips, you can send them through the media but we also request that you direct them to the Sheriff's office," said Sergeant Geisenburg.

If you know anything on the whereabouts of Mark Degner or Bryan Hayes, you can call First Coast Crimestoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous, and could be eligible for a cash reward.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- At an event for Florida Missing Children’s Day, the families of two boys who disappeared four year ago appear with investigators and advocates to show pictures of what the young men would look like at age 17.

Mark Degner was 12 years old and Bryan Hayes was 13 years old when they walked away from Paxon Middle School on Feb. 10, 2005. The two friends are believed to have run away together and despite sightings, no one has heard from them since.

Mark and Bryan are now 17 years old. Age progression pictures of Mark and Bryan were unveiled at a news conference in front of the Police Memorial Building that included the families, police and the Justice Coalition.

"The reason we've gathered here today is not to find two 12-year-old boys -- it's to bring awareness to that these boys that we're searching for are now 17-year-old young men," ," Angie Campbell, Mark's aunt, told the gathering. "We ask for your continued prayers for their continued well-being and safe return."

his is the 10th year for Florida Missing Children’s Day. Each year parents, children, law enforcement and citizens gather to remember those children who are still missing and those who will never come home again.

Gov. Charlie Crist and other notables took part in a similar event held in Tallahassee. The objective of the day is to raise awareness to Florida’s missing children and to educate the public on child safety and abduction prevention.

Anyone with information can call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500; the FDLE Missing and Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse at 888-FL-MISSING; or visit fdle.state.fl.us.

Jacksonville boys are among mysteries of the missing
Mark Anthony Degner and Bryan Andrew Hayes went missing after walking home from Paxon Middle School in 2005.

For Darlene Briggs it was like a glimpse into the future.

“Mark looked so much like his brothers and sisters it took our breath away,” the Jacksonville grandmother said of the age-enhanced portrait showing what her grandson would look like four years since his disappearance.

“That is just who we’re looking for,” she said.

Of course the future is now and the portraits of Mark Anthony Degner and Bryan Andrew Hayes are simply artists’ concepts of how the two friends would look in 2009. The boys disappeared from Jacksonville after walking away from Paxon Middle School together on Feb. 10, 2005.

Neither has returned home and it is believed they ran away.

Detective Rodney McKean of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said reports still come in that the boys have been sighted but none have been confirmed.

The pair, 12 and 13 when they vanished, would have transformed from children into young men, Briggs said. Mark would be 17, Bryan a year older.

“We are really, really hopeful on this,” Briggs said.

The portraits were unveiled as part of the statewide recognition Monday of Florida Missing Children’s Day.

“As of today, there are more than 300 children missing in our state,” said Ann Dugger, executive director of the Justice Coalition, a Jacksonville victims advocacy group that helped coordinate the unveiling at the Sheriff’s Office.

The boys were among four missing children spotlighted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse.

For Briggs and family members of other missing children, the paramount concern during a search is to keep awareness elevated.

It is a focus that has recently been felt acutely in Northeast Florida, where Putnam County kindergartner Haleigh Cummings disappeared in February.

Marie Griffis, a grandmother of Haleigh Cummings, was at the Sheriff’s Office in Jacksonville to also remind that the youngster, now 6, is still missing.

“It means a lot to me to be able to be here today,” she said. “It’s horrible not knowing where she is.”

Recent cases, such as the return of Jaycee Dugard 18 years after she was abducted from her California neighborhood are encouraging, however faintly.

“It makes you want to search even more,” Griffis said. “But you don’t know where to search.”

In both Northeast Florida cases, families have used fliers and other methods to keep the stories alive. Billboards of all three have been erected and decks of cards with Mark and Bryan were even distributed in jails in case someone there would recognize the boys.

The age-enhanced portraits have been printed on new fliers in the case.

“Our family is hopeful that these posters will be key in bringing our boys home,” Briggs said.
