Murder suspect faces threats
Jeremy Pawloski
The Olympian
OLYMPIA — An anonymous threat that a motorcycle gang would harm Steven Mullins, who is charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s strangulation, led court security officials to change his in-person arraignment to a video arraignment.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy was tight-lipped about the source of the threat Wednesday, and how jail staff members learned about it.
He said they learned about the threat “a day or so” before Steven Mullins’ Tuesday morning arraignment.
“There were threats made against Steve Mullins by an anonymous source involving a biker gang,” Mealy said.
Held on bail
Steven Mullins, 45, pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder during Tuesday’s arraignment in Thurston County Superior Court.
He was being held Wednesday at the Thurston County Jail with bail set at $1 million.
Amy Mullins, 38, was estranged from her husband at the time of her death. The couple had lived together for 20 years until July 11, when Amy Mullins moved out of the home they shared in Rochester.
Prosecutors say Steven Mullins strangled her when she visited their former residence on Carper Road on July 21.
One night earlier, he is alleged to have told her, “I’ll have you in life or I’ll have you in heaven.”
Mealy said Wednesday that the threat is under investigation.

Suspect under watch after suicide attempt
Steven H. Mullins, accused of strangling his wife, attempted suicide in the Thurston County Jail on the morning of Dec. 11 but was released from a hospital the same day, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office reported.
He is accused of killing his wife, Amy, 38, in July, after she insulted him during a visit to his home in Rochester, court papers state. The couple had recently separated after 20 years together.
Mullins faces a life prison sentence if he is convicted of the premeditated-murder charge, which is pending.
Thurston County Chief Criminal Deputy James Chamberlain confirmed that Mullins tried to hang himself with an Ace bandage Dec. 11. The bandage was issued to Mullins after he injured his knee.
Mullins suffered a cut above his eye and a bloody nose and was taken to a hospital, but was returned to the jail that day. A corrections officer discovered Mullins in his cell the morning of Dec. 11 after the reported suicide attempt, and jail staff members said they discovered a suicide note.
"He's been placed in a cell by himself where he can be watched," Chamberlain said.

Prosecutors weigh degree of likely murder charge in Mullins death
Pathologist says Rochester woman died of strangulation
Christian Hill
The Olympian
Thurston County prosecutors plan to file a murder charge today against Steven H. Mullins, accused of strangling his estranged wife and disposing of her body in an abandoned refrigerator near property the couple once shared.
A pathologist concluded after an autopsy Wednesday that Amy Mullins, 38, died of manual strangulation. A significant factor was blunt-force trauma to her chest, county Coroner Gary Warnock said.
Prosecutors were reviewing the autopsy report. A judge has ordered Mullins, 45, held in Thurston County Jail with bail set at $1 million. The order expires at 5 p.m. today.
Mullins turned himself in to Grays Harbor County authorities Monday, about an hour after his wife’s family discovered her body near their property on the 20100 block of Carper Road Southwest in Rochester. The woman’s 15-year-old daughter reported her missing Saturday morning.
Mullins was booked in the jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. The autopsy report may provide evidence allowing prosecutors to file a first-degree murder charge, officials said.
Under Washington law, second-degree murder is defined as causing the death of another without premeditation. First-degree murder involves premeditation. A conviction of first-degree murder would result in a longer prison sentence.
Mullins told investigators that he had an out-of-body experience and his wife “made” him strangle her, court papers say.
He also reportedly told investigators he intended to plead guilty.
The attorney representing Mullins at a court hearing Monday said Mullins suffers from mental-health issues, and his statements may not be reliable, suggesting that Mullins might seek an insanity defense if he pleads not guilty.
Mullins told investigators that he strangled his wife after she insulted his manhood, according to court papers.
Before his arrest, Mullins told an investigator that his wife going missing was her attempt to cover up an affair with another man, court papers say.

Prosecutors: Murder suspect told family he 'snapped'
http://media.katu.com/images/070723_steve_mullins.jpg
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The body of a woman who police believe was killed by her estranged husband was found in an old refrigerator, and the suspect allegedly told police that he tried to dispose of her body.
Steve Mullins has been booked into the Thurston County Jail for investigation of murder in the death of 39-year-old Amy Mullins. He is being held on $1 million bail.
According to a statement of probable cause, Steve told detectives that his interaction with his wife was "like a dream" or out-of-body experience and that "she 'made' him strangle her."
No cause of death has been determined, but court documents said detectives found large gashes on her head and marks on her neck.
Amy's body was discovered Monday by family members in a Thurston County field near where she used to live with Steve.
The couple's relationship deteriorated to the point where Amy had moved out with her daughter, deputies said.
"I never really accepted that my dad would be able to take that away from everybody who needed her," said Amy's daughter Kailyee Detmar. "And I don't understand why he could take everything away from me like that when she was my mother and my everything."
Amy was last seen at alive Saturday morning. Amy's car was found outside her house in the 9100 block of James Road with the driver's side door open. Mullins' keys were in the ignition, her dog was in the car and her purse was sitting on her seat. Even a warm cup of coffee was left behind.
Deputies had been searching since that day when she was reported missing by her 15-year-old daughter.
The court documents indicate that the couple had argued the night before and Amy's daughter told detectives that her mother mentioned several bizarre things said by Steve during the fight, including a mention that he "was a good sniper."
Steve, 45, was contacted by investigators on Saturday days before Amy's body was found and told detectives that he had not seen Amy that day.
In court documents investigators wrote that they later learned Steven had told his siblings that "she called me half a man and I snapped. I snapped... and I'm going to need a lawyer."
Steve turned himself in to police in Grays Harbor County shortly after Amy's body was found and he is currently being held in the Thurston County Jail. He has not yet been charged.

Family shattered by man’s account of wife’s death
Christian Hill
The Olympian
Steven H. Mullins told detectives he had an out-of-body experience and watched as his estranged wife, Amy, “made” him strangle her, court papers say.
Thurston County Superior Court Judge Christine Pomeroy set bail at $1 million at a court hearing Tuesday, during which Steven Mullins’ court-appointed attorney said his client suffered from mental-health issues and that his statements to detectives “may not be totally reliable.”
“Certainly, that’s something that needs to be looked at more closely,” said the attorney, Eric Pilon.
Relatives and friends of the victim and defendant filled Pomeroy’s courtroom, and several cried when Steven Mullins, 45, appeared on closed-circuit television in a white jumpsuit next to Pilon.
After the hearing, they clustered outside for mutual support as they waited to learn more about the case.
Victim’s family speaks
Amy Mullins’ family told reporters that her husband took a special person from them and dismissed his explanation to investigators as a cop-out.
“We’re going to follow this all the way through to the end, and justice will be done,” said Wayne Detmar, her father.
Steven Mullins’ family members declined to comment.
After his arrest Monday, he was booked into the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. He could be released if Thurston County prosecutors don’t file criminal charges by 5 p.m. Thursday. They await the results of an autopsy scheduled for today that could enable them to file a charge of first-degree murder.
In Washington, second-degree murder is defined as causing the death of another without premeditation, or planning it beforehand. First-degree murder involves premeditation.
The manner of death determined by the coroner sometimes can “be a piece of evidence that could go toward premeditation, and that’s what we’re going to be looking for,” Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jon Tunheim said.
Monday’s discovery
Family members discovered the body of Amy Mullins, 38, in an abandoned refrigerator east of their property in the 20100 block of Carper Road Southwest in Rochester on Monday, two days after she disappeared. The couple, who had been together about 20 years, had lived on the property until about two weeks ago, when she moved into a nearby home.

Bail for estranged husband set at $1 million
Associated Press - July 24, 2007 7:55 PM ET
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A judge in Olympia this afternoon set bail at $1 million for the estranged husband of a woman whose body was found inside a refrigerator in the back of property the couple owned in Rochester.
45-year-old Steven Mullins appeared before Thurston County Superior Court Judge Chris Pomeroy via a closed-circuit television.
Mullins turned himself in to authorities in neighboring Grays Harbor County yesterday about one hour after the body of Amy Mullins was discovered.
After talking with Thurston County investigators, Mullins was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder last night. He is being held in the county jail.
Prosecutor David Bruneau said this afternoon that the charge against Mullins could be raised to first-degree murder pending an autopsy to be performed on Amy Mullins' body tomorrow.

Estranged husband's bail set at $1 million, mental issues raised
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Bail has been at $1 million on a man who told investigators his estranged wife "made him strangle her."
Relatives of Amy Mae Mullins, 38, whose body was found in a refrigerator behind the couple's property in Rochester, wept in Thurston County Superior Court during a closed-circuit television appearance Tuesday by Steven H. Mullins, 45.
Steven Mullins, who remained in jail for investigation of second-degree murder, has mental problems and his statements to authorities "may not be totally reliable," said Eric Pilon, his court-appointed defense lawyer. "Certainly, that's something that needs to be looked at more closely."
Mullins, whose previous marriage ended in a bitter divorce that included accusations of violence, turned himself in Monday after his wife's body was found by friends and relatives following fruitless search by sheriff's deputies over the weekend. An autopsy was pending.
She was reported missing Saturday, when a neighbor found her car outside the couple's home with the driver's door open, the keys in the ignition, a dog in the vehicle and her purse on the driver's seat.
The Mullinses were together about 20 years and were married for the last 10 until she moved into a nearby rental home about two weeks ago, friends said.
After being arrested, Mullins first refused to answer questions, then insisted on talking and told two detectives the circumstances of his wife's death were "like a dream" in which "he was out of his body ... watching everything happen," according to documents filed by prosecutors in court.
"He said she insulted his manhood, that she put his hands around her throat and that she 'made' him strangle her," prosecutors wrote. "In his next vision, she was blue in the face."
Mullins was cited by Centralia police in December 1986 for assault following a complaint by his previous wife, Teresa, shortly before their divorce was finalized, Lewis County Superior Court records show. She subsequently filed for a temporary protection order, but the petition was dropped when neither she nor Mullins appeared for a court hearing.

Rochester man pleads innocent in wife's death
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A man whose estranged wife's body was found in a refrigerator behind their property in Rochester has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
Relatives of Steven H. Mullins, 45, and Amy Mae Mullins, 38, filled a Thurston County Superior Court room for his arraignment Tuesday. Mullins remained in jail with bail set at $1 million.
The couple had been together about 20 years and married for the last 10 before she moved out on July 11, friends said. Mullins is accused of beating and strangling her 10 days later when she went to their property to tend to a horse that was about to give birth.
Her body was discovered July 23.
According to family members, Mullins told her the night before the killing, "I'll have you in life or I'll have you in heaven."
Mullins told detective the circumstances of his wife's death were "like a dream" in which "he was out of his body ... watching everything happen," according to documents filed by prosecutors in court. "He said she insulted his manhood, that she put his hands around her throat and that she 'made' him strangle her."
Defense lawyer Eric Pilon has said Mullins has mental problems.

OLYMPIA — A group that provides shelter and aid to victims of domestic violence had a forum Tuesday to try to answer a haunting question: Could anything have been done to prevent the death of Amy Mullins?
Hours before Tuesday’s forum at SafePlace’s office on Legion Way, Steven Mullins pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on one count of first-degree murder. The courtroom was packed with the Mullinses’ friends and family. Steven Mullins was at Thurston County Jail on Tuesday night, and bail has been set at $1 million.
“Is there something the community could have done that significantly altered her life?” SafePlace executive director Mary Pontarolo asked during the forum.
No prior calls
There were no easy answers.
Thurston County Sheriff Dan Kimball noted that there were no prior calls reporting domestic violence at the home the Mullinses shared in the 20100 block of Carper Road Southwest in Rochester.

His trial is tentatively scheduled for October 27th, 2008.
Although this small town trial probably won't be shown on TV, or video streamed live, many trials still need attention, and we will be keeping an eye on the murder of this wonderful mother.

I remember this case so well. The pain this man put this woman's family was unwarranted and uncalled for. I amsure that many of us prayed that this would turn out differently.I remember all the words from her sister and my heart went out to her so badly for answers to explain this tragedy. There is no way to explain such senselessness. I know there has been a number of postponements on the starting of this trial. I just hope October will bring closure for her family It has always came across to me of this pos is giving such theries that are unbelievable.
I hope that the prosecution has a very strong case. If I remember correctly didn't the psyche eval come back there was no problem or is that another case I am thinkinhg. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am getting so old that I really question myself sometimes.
I haven't posted on the boards for a while,...a long while I guess. I miss coming here and reading, being involved and trying to be of help wherever I can for other families and friends who God forbid ever find themselves in this situation. As some of you may know, I spent a considerable amount of time on the message forums here and over at TruTV (formerly CTV) before my sister went missing, and was later found killed. I searched for weeks for Marsilene Smith....driving, walking through brush, fields,..creeks and streams, hoping and praying I could find something, anything that would help her family bring her home. But, after Marsilene...I realized that staying so involved in every missing persons case I read about was really doing me more harm then good. I'm not ashamed to admit that I..as has all my family (except my Father) have gone to counseling or are still in counseling trying to deal with the grief, the loss,..and just plain trying to learn how to go on. My counselor said it was possible that my being so "in touch" with cases so similar to my sister's might be hampering my ability to move forward. As she has stated to me many times...you will never get over it...you'll just learn how to cope with it better. And she was right...I was "stuck"...and couldn't move forward. She suggested a break from the forums, which is what I ultimately had to do. I hope that once the trial is over...I can come back...be an active participant and maybe someday help someone find their missing love one, BEFORE it's too late.
Sorry for the rambling....my main reason for coming her tonight was to post the following:
There was an article recently published by The Olympian (local newspaper) regarding a request by Steve's (a.k.a. POS) attorney's request for a motion to supress statements he made to LE after he turned himself in. So far, the judge has not ruled on the suppression motion as to whether or not his confession/statements will be allowed in as evidence.

Thanks again to all of you who have been here with us from the beginning...from that first awful day...July 21st, 2007 when we heard the words..."Amy is missing".
Many email asking how the family is her doing,...her daughter...and even ask about her dogs and horses. My answer thus far is always the same...we're doing the best we can. It never gets better...it just gets farther away. Time won't heal these wounds, unfortunately.
As we head to trial on 10/27 please pray for our family...and maybe start a bail fund for me. I still can't stop picturing myself flying over the gallery wall, lunging at the defense table and doling out my own personal justice.
Thanks to all.

I have been reading about this case since the begining. SBJ your therapist is right you never get over this, you just learn to move in a different direction. My daughter has been gone for over 6 years now. This was the first year that I did not totally break down about her death. I don't know if that is good or bad but for five years I did not know if I could go on. I did manage to move in a different direction. Also at that time I found the court tv message boards. This helped me to know I was not alone that there were people out there that suffered worse then I had. It was life saving for me.
I pray that things go well with the trial. I hope does not allow for SM's statements to be tossed out of court. That would be the biggest injustice for Amy and your family.
Just know that we are here for you and will pray that justice will prevail with the trial.
Take care of yourselves.

Judge to allow suspect's statements
A jury will be allowed to hear statements that Steve Mullins gave to police about his slain wife, Amy, when his trial for a charge of murdering her starts later this month, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Mullins' attorney, Brett Purtzer of Tacoma, had sought to suppress two statements Mullins gave to police about Amy Mullins — including one in which he talked about a dream where he saw himself outside his body strangling his wife until she turned blue.
Amy Mullins' body was found stuffed in an abandoned refrigerator outside July 23, 2007, about 125 yards east of Steve Mullins' Carper Road home, two days after she had disappeared. She had been strangled.
Thurston County Superior Court Judge Anne Hirsch said she was not persuaded by Purtzer's argument that Mullins' statements about his wife were involuntary and were made after he had invoked his right to an attorney.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney David Bruneau argued that the statements were admissible and that Steve Mullins made his statement about the dream on his own initiative.
Steve Mullins is charged with premeditated murder in Amy Mullins' homicide. The case is set to go to trial Oct. 27.

I've created a trial updates page on Amy's website so that I can have one central point to share what's going on in the trial. I'll update that page regularly.
I was going to try and post here and various other message forums that have been following Amy's case but figured it might be better for everyone to have just one place to read rather then having to visit multiple forums and reading repeats of something I posted some place else.
The trial update page on Amy's website doesn't have a message board or discussion forum so I'll check back here so that I can join in the discussion with all of you, or answer any questions someone might have.

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A Rochester man has been found guilty in the strangling death of his wife whose battered body was found stuffed in a refrigerator on the man's property last summer, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.
Steven Mullins was convicted of first-degree murder in Thurston County Superior Court. Jurors began deliberations Wednesday and came back with a verdict shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Detectives found the body of Mullins' estranged wife, Amy Mullins, on July 21, 2007, inside a refrigerator, court documents said. She had gashes on her nose and head and had marks and bruising on her neck and arms, detectives noted in the documents.
According to the court documents, Mullins described his interaction with his wife to police as "like a dream." He said he was "out of his body ... watching everything happen." He said she insulted his manhood then she put his hands around her throat and that she "made" him strangle her. In his next "vision" she was "blue in the face." He then disposed of her body, the documents said.
No date has been set for Mullins' sentencing.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Amy's family. I pray they will find closure some way. Amy will never be coming back but at least with Steve being found guilty will go a long way to help this family heal.
