NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Nashville court selected on Tuesday the 12-person jury who will hear the case against Jerome Barrett in the 1975 death of Marcia Trimble.
At the beginning of the day, there were 65 potential juror candidates after the pool was narrowed from 125 on Monday.
The jury consists of seven women and five men, setting the stage for the trial to begin Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
Opening statements of the prosecution were expected to center around Barrett's DNA being found on Marcia's blouse.
The defense was expected to counter the argument by saying there are other DNA samples that are bad, and possibly setting up a position that all of the DNA must be discounted.
Another defense expected to be used by Barrett's team is the theory that teenage neighbor Jeffrey Womack is the real killer of the child. Womack was never charged, and this theory was discredited by police 20 years ago.
The first witness expected to take the stand was Marcia's mother, Virginia.
Barrett was arrested and charged with the child's death in early 2008. He was convicted earlier this year of murdering Vanderbilt University student Sarah Des Prez in 1975.
The jury was locally chosen residents from Davidson County, which was a request by Barrett. Attorneys are attempting to find people who have no opinion or have never heard about this high-profile case.

Mother's questions still linger after guilty verdict in Trimble case
She thanks city, those who eased her anguish
Virginia Trimble Ritter now knows the truth about who killed her daughter — or at least, some of it.
She hopes someday she may be able to go to the prison and visit Jerome Barrett, the man convicted Saturday of murdering 9-year-old Marcia Trimble.
She needs the remaining pieces of the puzzle: why he killed her, what time it was and if he was strangling the child when her mother leaned out her front door to call Marcia home for dinner on Feb. 25, 1975.
But she now knows — after a jury convicted him — that he is the person Nashville spent 33 years trying to find.
"Today, the justice system says he's guilty," Ritter said. "Today, we can be satisfied it was him. When I saw his DNA, that pretty well nailed it for me."
Ritter spoke and answered questions after the verdict for more than a half hour, three decades of thoughts piled up that could finally be released. She thanked all the people who helped her, including family, friends, acquaintances and strangers who brought comfort and prayers to her family.
She apologized if she had forgotten to thank the people who dropped off fruit, snacks and suppers for the volunteers searching for Marcia during a 33-day span in 1975. She's not sure if she ever sent thank-you cards.
"Please know that I'm grateful for every strawberry that you gave me, everything. I'm grateful for the prayers from every church in this city,'' she said.
From day one, she has known she was not alone in her grief.
"The Nashville that experienced Marcia's death all these years have shared my pain. They really have,'' she said. "That has made my pain much softer.''
She reminded this city that she is not the only mother who's lost a child, specifically mentioning the families of victims with unsolved cases, a group she was in until today.
"There are lots of families who never ever see their child," she said.
She pointed to the continuing mystery of Tabitha Tuders, who went missing six years ago on her way to school. She was 13 years old. Her mother, Debra Tuders, still does not know what happened to her daughter or whether she is alive or dead.
(2 of 2)
Ritter acknowledged she's always been glad to at least know Marcia's body was found, calling it a mixed blessing.
Since the day her daughter left her house to sell Girl Scout cookies and never returned, Ritter said, God has given her an incredible amount of peace. "I have a touch of it today, or else I'd be standing with tears,'' she said.
But the tears came when Ritter brought out a surprise gift for Capt. Mickey Miller.
Miller was the man who researched advances in DNA in 1990 and reopened the case, confident that modern technology could give the family some answers. He sent the blouse and jeans Marcia was found in to many labs trying to get a DNA profile.
It was that evidence that turned up a match when Barrett's DNA was entered into the national database, suddenly giving the police a likely suspect.
Gift brings tears Ritter lifted a picture she believes Marcia drew two weeks before she died, depicting the crucifixion of Jesus. The child had painted three crosses atop a hill. Marcia had just become a Christian, and asked Jesus to save her, before she died.
The painting was on construction paper, but Virginia and her late husband Charles had it framed. There was fingerprint dust at the bottom, where police had inspected the photo to lift a print after Marcia disappeared.
"This is my heart I am giving to Mickey Miller," Ritter said.
Miller, a devout Catholic, took off his glasses to wipe away the tears. He was asked what the gift meant to him.
"I don't have any words for that," Miller said.

your welcome Anna, I was watching Judge Sotomayor's questioning and it was an optional view and I had remembered seeing it on here, man your right, they were just then going over the DNA, goodness there couldn't of been much time taken for the defense, such unconscionable ugliness, I hope Tenn. has a special place for him.
