Search under way for 3 missing boys

7:46 AM PDT on Thursday, July 16, 2009

MONROE, Wash. - Search teams are combing the area near the Evergreen Fairgrounds, looking for three boys missing since Wednesday night.

The boys, 10-year old Elijah Gertschitz, his 8-year-old brother Ethyan Gertschitz and their 11-year-old neighbor friend Dylan Lewis, were last seen outside playing in the 18000 block of 137th Street SE in Monroe.

The father of brothers thought he heard them at about 9:45 p.m. when he began calling them. He said he whistled and yelled for them but they did not respond. The parents called police about 45 minutes later.

Officers from the Monroe Police Department and deputies and search dogs from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office have been searching a wooded area near the home. An infrared plane was also in the air overnight looking for the boys.

The father of the Gertschitz brothers say the boys know not to get into a car with strangers and hopes they're hunkered down in the woods somewhere.

Officials say Elijah is wearing an orange t-shirt and faded jeans, Ethyan is in a grey t-shirt and blue jeans. Dylan Lewis is wearing a dark grey t-shirt with the letters 'DC' on it and dark blue jeans.

If you spot the boys or know information about their whereabouts, call 911.

From left, Eli Gertschitz, Ethyan Gertschitz and Dylan Lewis.

The grandfather of one of the boys said he hopes the kids just went exploring and got lost.

Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said the boys were found sitting on a curb about 9:20 a.m. near their home.

"They had not been there very long," Willis said. The boys had apparently spent the night exploring the woods.

I bet they won't do that again anytime soon.... lol
