A2L, you've written a very insightful article.
I found your Blog piece to be an excellent read, A2L. Not only well structured and writing that flowed but, as Ali said, insightful. You are clearly very familiar with the case. It definitely peaked my interest in it.
Was there anywhere in your research than you ran across anything to help explain the different accounts of the evening Brooke went missing? I'm referring to, from your article (and others I read):
"1. Cathy Henson, Brooke’s mother, overheard Brooke and Shaun arguing and overheard her say she was leaving the area. Shaun left. Brooke told her mother she did not intend to go anywhere and had only said that to get attention from Shaun Shirley.
2. Another account has her parents returning home to find Brooke alone on the porch crying because she had broken up with her boyfriend.
3. ...at some point, Brooke told her father, Martin Henson, that she was going to leave town for 5 years to get away from Shaun."
Personally I was struck by anyone saying they were going to leave for a finite period of time, i.e., 5 years. I don't think I've ever read about that before. I gather from one piece I read (don't recall right now if it was in the blog or one of the links) that apparently her father was locked in to that 5 year time frame. So sad.

nice job a2l. question though. according to the article quote, "The W. E. Willis store is approximately a block and a half from their home. "
from the map it looks a lot farther than a block and a half from her residence. am i looking at it wrong?

Hi Anna,
Referencing the map, it would be accurate to say a car route of approximately .09 to 1 mile. There were several references using the distance of a block, block and a half, or two blocks. I have no real explanation as to why the accounts are in blocks, other than to ponder if they estimate based on a shortcut not appearing on the map (a foot path), or if it is the colloquial measure of blocks similar to the phrase, "down the road". All accounts have her last seen on Henderson Dr.
I wanted to remain true to the accounts reported.

Hi PatC,
3. I was struck by Martin Henson's report that Brooke told him she would gone for 5 years to make a break from Shaun Shirley. It seemed odd, and as you point out, it was unusual. It was reported he held out hope that she would return after five years. I am sure he is still hoping for her return, even though that time frame passed long ago.
All I can do is give my thoughts on the contradicting statements. Brooke's Aunt related the statement from Martin. Perhaps, it is taken out of context and Brooke actually made that statement at another date, or it is something that was remembered well after she disappeared.
2. As to the statement regarding the her parents finding her in tears on the porch, that sounds like the account of a third person. I wondered if it was related from friends who may have left the party and remembered her crying on the porch. Brooke and Shaun broke up that night.
1. Cathy Henson, Brooke's mother, gave this account.
I was trying to remain faithful to the accounts given, by not eliminating any and by not interjecting my own opinions.
The biggest disappointment was the TRPD, and letting the case grow cold for 3 weeks before any LE attention began. After 3 weeks the local patrol officers conducted the investigation and the search dogs could not scent because of rains during the first three weeks. Following this the focus seemed to be on the boyfriend, and without any evidence, the investigator said he thought she was a murder victim. (I'm not at all happy with the way this played out).
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I appreciate it, more than you might know.

I'm sorry I misunderstood your question, PatC.
It's my opinion she was abducted, either on the way to WE Willis store, at the store parking lot, or on her way back home. I think U.S. 25 plays a large roll in this missing case and I didn't read anything to indicate it was followed up on as a possibility.
There were so many things that went wrong in the investigation of her case, including IMO the investigator's belief that she was murdered (without any solid clue), and how that might have influenced the course of investigation.
Sometimes, things are as simple as they seem. I believe she was abducted sometime after 2:30 am, on the morning of July 4, 1999. There has never been any evidence of a murder, the only solid fact is the location and the fact she vanished. She is still out there, she may be alive.

Anna, the way I look at it is, if he was used to his mom taking him to daycare every day, he would remember if it were someone different... even nine hours later. However, if there were different people who pitched in, he might be confused.

Sometimes it seems we hear so much about missing persons that we lose sight of the fact that they are not just a story out there. Very good article, Awake.
I was surprised that no one saw her at the daycare that day.
It could be that 7:40-8:00 am is a very busy time for the daycare center, especially with school in summer recess on 7/19. It might be the children were accustomed to the routine and simply went inside together without her having to go in with them. Maybe she could see them go in from where she was parked. It is a mystery why they are not positive she is the one who dropped them off that morning.
What puzzles me is where were the ping coordinates from her cell phone at 9:09 a.m. and again at 9:30 a.m., in relation to where the witness saw the red SUV with a woman matching Melanie's description struggling and calling out "What about my babies", around 2:00 p.m. that same day. I would have liked to have that information on a map. Maybe it's something LE is holding back. Maybe that is why they say she is missing from Belle, even though her minivan was found miles away in West End (a neighborhood in Charleston).
And another thing I wonder about is if they checked out all those associated with the project to put her image on billboards across the state for the Adult Education program.
I'm wondering why didn't the witness call LE immediately when she described the woman as "struggling to get away"? Is that why the name of the witness is withheld?
There are a lot of unanswered questions in Melanie's case.

Detective Lane is also not certain Melanie made the cell phone calls.
If Melanie did not drop the children off, and she did not make the cell phone calls, what does that say?
Melanie's family is very suspicious of Davis, the man she was engaged to and whose residence she left that morning.
