View Full Version : Volunteers Needed

As most of you know we are dedicated in trying to help find missing persons. We want to become the number one place to go to for information on the missing. It is our hope that we can make a difference and bring awareness to the public of the disastrous epidemic of missing persons we have in this country. The majority get very little media coverage when they disappear, maybe on little blip on TV and a couple of articles in the newspapers. We would like to help change that, but we need help in doing it.
We want to take things from the time someone goes missing right on through to the end. With them being located, if someone is charged and if there is a trial.
If anyone would like to become involved in this please let us know.. Become a part of building something great while helping the ones that desperately need helping.
If interested you can post here or pm us..
Thanks,
Admin

In what ways can we help as volunteers, Harlett?

Have you thought about starting a myspace or something to get the awareness out there?
I know... just one more 'board' for you to work but it would get HFTM to a mass market.
(Kami & I can do it for you)

The thought had crossed my mind, I just haven't had time to create a profile. I would be very grateful if you or Kami could do that. Thank you for your help!

I can do it. I believe you have to have an email... is there a basic email for either of you that I can use?
I can then get with Kami and we'll work on decorating it all up and we'll all have the password (and then you and harlett can change it later if you want, or kami adn I can do it)

Ok... www.myspace.com/hftm
Everything else was taken. I talked to Kami already and when I get home from work I'll call her and we can work on it.
We need pictures and links. I put the codes in the "Who I want to Meet Section" since the About is full with info.
And all the other boxes have <Z> in them so links won't work in there. We'll figure it out and change it up a bit to work
I copied from here some the information and put it over there.
Right now it's a work in progress... but, if you don't like let me know!

Harlett,
I'm volunteering my time, if there is something I can do to help. Health issues are keeping me home currently, and I have time to spend on the computer. I am low-tech but working on it. Maybe I could follow specified cases or something of that nature. Just let me know if you think I can be helpful to you.

lol.. I should have read further before my other post... I don't think it will hurt at all to have more than one myspace page. I am wondering if one should be put under group instead of personal?
I have seen some other missing person sites on myspace, I'm not sure how they have them listed tho...

Have you considered asking businesses to put links on their site?
You could add reciprocal links to the business sites somewhere on this site.

NO, keep going with it.. It won't hurt to have 2, it may even help. I don't know that much how myspace works.. have you seen any of the other sites about missing persons over there? I can't get the links from here at work, the site is blocked.

there is myspace.com/helpfindthemissing.
It looks nice. I would like to do a similar thing but not have it so cluttered looking with all the banners. I like banners but it's hard to see them all. So maybe separate them by ages a little
The blogs would be the listings of missing people - each blog would be by age group. I have one done but myspace is acting up and won't post it.
Also, some families have their own. We can get them as friends and draw more attention to their missing loved one.
What is the one you started? we can add each other

I just want to thank everyone for their support as we try and establish ourselves here on the web. Our intentions are to help facilitate the search and rescue efforts in the event a person becomes missing. We hope to generate additional awareness on behalf of the families of victim's of unresolved crimes, particularly missing person's. With this in mind, if there is anything you can do to help facilitate this i.e., marketing, legal issues, research, etc. we would be grateful.
If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to post your comments here or send a PM to either HarlettOhara or myself.
In the meantime, please take a look at our missing person's threads and help us generate some much needed awareness for the community of family and friends associated with each. I encourage everyone to look at some of the due diligence we have provided in both current missing person's cases and the 'missing person's located' cases.
Everyone have a wonderful week and thanks again for your participation.

Thank you all very much for your offers
We are still kind of deciding on the most effective method in utilizing all of your efforts. The cause, as you probably know by now is missing person's. Our goal is to generate awareness for the families and friends who seek answer's regarding their loved one's.
Right now, we have been working on our general web presence with the blog, the home page, the rememberance page and through social networking sites i.e., Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, et al..
I will create a thread with links to all of them so they are accessible to all of our volunteers.
Another idea in the conceptual stages being tossed around is a HelpFindTheMissing.org You Tube channel designed to help further our cause. It's an extremely cost effective way to to showcase some of these cases. Many County Sheriff's Dept's are now looking at that as an effective tool in combatting crime, a great example of that is being featured on CNN Headline News today.
In the meantime we can always use help in doing the following;
* Posting the proprietary HelpFindTheMissing.org missing persons thread on relevant media comment sections. Basically, when there is a new article pertaining to a missing person there is often a comment section. In most cases, we have NEW missing person's cases up within hours with relevant information. If everyone would do this just one time each day we could significantly increase awarenss on behalf of the families and perhaps even play a role in bringing someone home. I would not do this if I didn't think our efforts (An Instant, FREE website presence on multiple HFTM operated pages and social networking sites, research & due diligence via the public record, and our support in general) would make a difference.
Again, I appreciate everyone's support in furthering this cause!!!!
If you are interested in helping in any of the aforementioned ways or have any suggestions we would love to hear them, just be gentle LOL.
I will be in and out today as my son has been sick w/ the flu.
Everyone, have a great weekend!!

Please count me in as well. Like Kella, I can offer writing/editing/proofreading services. Perhaps she and I (and Katy as well) could work together on a project -- would love that. I am an ace researcher and am happy to volunteer that service as well. As a former paralegal and with several family members involved in LE (past and present), I have fairly deep connections and could possibly tap into some local LE resources, depending upon what's needed.
One idea I have right off the bat (if you're not already doing something similar): What about designing a business card for HFTM.org that we volunteers could distribute to local police departments and media. I was thinking if LE had such a resource available, they could give the cards to missing persons' family members immediately so that they could turn to us for additional support and assistance. Also, LE might be more likely to turn to us to get the word out and for additional help if they have the resource (cards) at their fingertips.
Is this something you've already done? If not, it wouldn't be a financial or time hardship on any of us to print out a pre-designed card and drop a few to local LE to have on hand.
Just a thought. Thanks for all you've done and are doing, and please know that I'm happy to help in any way I can. In the immortal words of Bill Withers, "Use Me" -- okay, I've dated myself now, but I love that song!

And the cards (or even some kind of an information letter about this forum) that we could mail to local law enforcement agencies would be great.

I love this forum and if I can help in some way; I would sure like to. I don't know if I have the expertise you're looking for; but I spent 30 at my state's forensic science laboratory system. I was the administrator for my state's sexual assault evidence collection kit program. I'm a good writer, I type over 100 wpm, with 99% accuracy (though you would never know from my posts). I'm an excellent editor and also designed brochures and pamphlets during my career and of course, spend a lot of time on the computer. I do have a disability that I have to take into effect; depending on what you might have me do. Just let me know where I can pitch in.

If you can find a spot for me, I'd be glad to help when I can. I have excellent online research skills, with multifacted experience in several areas of nursing, education, consumer & victim advocacy, corporate experience, and working with state legislators to change state law. I'm not a super-techie, but am married to one, who could help on a limited basis.
As the survivor of a murdered sibling, and also being the victim of a serious online stalker myself, my heart is open to putting it all on the line to spare even one person from what I have gone through in recent years.

I am, again, offering my assistance. Unfortunately, I remain as "low-tech" as I was when I first posted my desire to help. I also remain just as willing to educate myself in order to be useful to "the cause". I followed the volunteer threads daily for a couple of weeks and off and on thereafter. Apparently, you need volunteers with more talent than I possess, but my offer and desire to help still stands.
In support of my offer are the following: (1) Due to an early forced medical retirement (temporary I hope) I have the time to give; (2) Prior to my retirement I was a victims' advocate and have years of experience working with LE, the legislature, the media, and various other organizations in an effort to bring victims' issues into the public domain; and (3) I am literate most of the time.
If this post has nuisance value only, I apologise. It is only because Roamer posted a request for more volunteers in Current Events that I decided to try again.

Bill boards, bumper stickers, etc. I sure would buy a t shirt, bumper sticker, etc.
Ive dealt with "runaway" daughter who came to her senses, but will never forget the fear of the phone call that could tell me she is dead under the boardwalk. Had no clue she was experiencing emotional turmoil, someone had to have taken her. It was hell. Did not know who to turn to.
This site is a wonderful thing especially if someone goes missing where I live, you bet, my ears and eyes are open along with anyone who would listen to me to Help Find The Missing.

Ok... www.myspace.com/hftm
I put in a request to add you to my friends on myspace. From Carla :basic45:

I have been PMing Packy as to volunteer to help cover Tom Smith, Nicholas Francisco & Eric W. Hall in the new missing person's forum. Would you all moderators like to be Pm'ed when somebody volunteers for a certain person ?
I would like to keep adding more persons to my list as I get going. If you would like me to address a certain forum or person let me know. I am partial to any missing subjects.
I also go to different links for my subjects & post there about our message board. I provide a link & invite anybody to read, join & post for free.
I belong to myspace & facebook. I also post about the message board in them. I would like to find the facebook spaces we have & add as friends. If there is more than any one of these on these sites, could you provide links in a certain area ? As stated I have found only one. Thank you very much.:basic45:

Ferret,
We appreciate any research you are willing to provide. I was just getting ready to mention Facebook and outline the marketing potential it has, even more so than MySpace. If you or anyone else would be willing to help us do that we would certainly be grateful. If you find a group and we have not created a thread for them, please feel free to do so.
Here is my Facebook profile >

Thanks you and everyone else for their support!

I have added to your list of those you will follow, ferretplay, and thank you so much. Wheezer has asked for help for the following:
Felicia Christine Thomas
Daniel Querzoli & Amy Scott
Kimberly Michelle Henderson
If any of these cases interest you, maybe contact wheezer and consider working together. You or Wheezer can let me know if you want them added to your lists for cases you would be following.

I am finding this to be a big problem also. People just don't want to hear it! I have had a few people that I asked to go to the site "how can you read that stuff? Well I tell them somebody has to and thank god we do have people that will. If it had to do with any one of them they would hope and pray for a site like HelpFindTheMissing.org! It's frustrating!! I just keep trying to get them to listen!:0009:
I was trying to do research on a very old case that occured back in "72" to a 7 year old boy named, Johnny Lindquist, and the aid who is there to help people find case laws was looking bored, so I mentioned this case. She stopped me in mid-sentence and said, "Enough. I just can't listen to even one more missing child case or child murder."
And I wanted to say, "And I do??" But instead I said, "If we all were to turn a deaf ear or looked away, then what does this do to HELP missing people who might.......MIGHT, right now! have a chance to be found if just one person was to speak up! Somebody who might find something 'off."
We can't expect the police and other officials to do this on their own! We all need to get involved.

Rockford unfortunately that is how a lot of people are about all kinds of different things. For instance my mother who is in the late stages of Alzheimer's. I am caring for her alone at home. I have five brothers and the majority of them say they just want to remember her the way she was. Well wouldn't we all! So we're supposed to just forget about people when they need us the most?

Just this morning a co-worker was late because she drove by a woman who was lying at the end of her driveway. So many cars drove by and NOT ONE, stopped to see if she was ok. My colleague did stop and this older woman had fallen and could not get back up so an ambulance was called.
All those cars driving by and not one of them....:(

Hi count me in too! I would love to help! Not sure what I could do, but I do have a lot of time.
I saw a program this week where people can volunteer to match up head re-constructions using skulls of unidentified dead people with pictures of missing people. It was a first for me, but surely not with folks here. Anyone have a link? It was a volunteer program. Better for all to find their loved ones alive, but not always possible.
There have been a few people from my area whom have gone missing and it seems after awhile, they are forgotten. What a shame and I have always wondered what could be done to spark LE's interest or anyones interest.
:0012: I'll wait to hear from you. :)

Because of my arthritis I'm physically unable to actually search, but if there's any kind of adminstrative effort I could do to coordinate local searchers, e.g., phone calls, scheduling, setting up groups, etc. I'll do that.

Here is what I wrote on Feb 17th:
If you can find a spot for me, I'd be glad to help when I can. I have excellent online research skills, with multifacted experience in several areas of nursing, education, consumer & victim advocacy, corporate experience, and working with state legislators to change state law. I'm not a super-techie, but am married to one, who could possibly help on a limited basis.
As the survivor of a murdered sibling, and also being the victim of a serious online stalker myself, my heart is open to putting it all on the line to spare even one person from what I have gone through in recent years.
Sincerely, NJN

In the event there is a search effort in your area we will contact you to to make arrangements. As a member of HFTM, one of the things you can do to help generate awareness for this cause, is to actively participate in the discussions and also by contacting the media in general in order to help facilitate awareness. Hi, SRT.
In essence everyone who participates in researching and updating cases, and referencing this forum is helping in many ways. Those who join the volunteer team basically commit to helping keep the public aware of missing person's cases and unsolved cases, in order to not let them go cold in any way possible. hi... i just requested to be added to the myspace page you have set up...on myspace this is all i do all day is post bulletins about missing people or child abuse/sbs cases...until i found your wonderful site, i was using alot of google and "scaredmonkeys.com" along with other sites to fact check and for photos of victims etc...what good is an amber alert with no photo??? still post it, but desperately try to find pics. anyway i have a network of friends on myspace who do the same as i do and i am so glad to have found this site...if there is anything that i can do as a volunteer, i would be more than happy. i am still trying to learn my way around here and trying to post things that i find in appropriate places etc etc etc. anyway, thank you. i love the site. :1222423:

Harlette,
I just wanted to let you know that I am very impressed with the work that has gone on in setting up this site. I remember posting with a lot of you when Naomi Arnette was missing. What a great group of people.
I live just outside of Salt Lake City Utah and will be willing to do what I can from here.
This has become a passion for me since my daughter was murdered over 5 years ago. This is such a worthy cause. I hope we can really get the word out and help find the missing and bring some kind of closure for their families.

grammy it is so nice to see you over here and thank you so very much for the nice comments. They are greatly appreciated. Robert Arnette's trial will be coming up before too much longer and then Naomi will finally get justice. I am so sorry about your daughter, this has become my passion since losing my daughter also. :love0085:

Hope this is the best place to introduce myself.
My name is Damon Talbot, I am the Director of Operations for the Destiny Search Project. I actually found this site since my name appeared in a few news articles that were posted here. The Destiny Search Project was formed after the case of Destiny Norton here in Salt Lake City. Our goal is to provide support for ongoing volunteer search operations. We have participated in multiple searches in Utah and have become quite effective in organizing efforts.
Right now we are working on a few major projects to help us here locally, but also some that we want to pass along nationwide. One of these is a software project that will be used to maintain a constant record of the search operation. this will include registration, team tracking, planning, statistics, and other features. We hope this software will help to make our efforts more efficient, and at the same time more effective with more information. More on this in the future.
This board looks like a great place for our group. I hope to get to know many of you. (if ANY of you are in Utah please PM me as I am seeking volunteers at all times) below is the myspace page I started a bit ago. We only just started that page and still need much more work. Also looking to get a website soon. Look forward to working with all of you.

Me, too! And I don't know how to do anything..:shrug1:
I can Google, and check other sites for update, things like that. Anymore complex than that and I probably would be more trouble than help. I don't even know how to set up my own profile page or my myspace page. I think I just have never taken the time to figure it all out. That's what I tell myself, anyway. I will try to do anything you ask of me.:love0081:

Welcome, welcome, welcome.
Let me join others welcoming you to HFTM. As you've already found out this is a wonderful board doing some difficult but terrific work and always needing more eyes and ears. Sometimes these true crime scenarios can get bone chilling and depressing and start to infringe on your personal life, but before that happens let me urge you to join us over on the Koffee Klatch (http://helpfindthemissing.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15) for some coffee, tea, cocoa, soda and snacks. Someone usually fixes us a cyber-breakie and drinks are always available. We just ask that if you take the last cup of coffee please make a fresh pot. :girl_haha:
This is a great message board and has so much material it'll make your head spin so when you get "brain overload" come on over here for friendship and foolishness to lighten the mood. We all take the plight of the missing ... particularly the agony of the families ... seriously, but we can also take a break once in a while and you're more than welcome.
You'll find some "neighbors" over there too... others who live in the "Deep South" ... like Bayou Lass... Louisiana, me... S. Mississippi, Roamer... Alabama...
Hope to see you soon. :howdy:

Pauli,
As soon as I get on the right depression medication, I will be glad to volunteer, at the present moment it's hard for me to even read the cases. I only check the one's I had been following before it hit so bad. I'll let you know when I'm ready! I really do want to help, I'd want someone to help if it were someone I knew or loved! Thanks for all you do!
