POSTED: 5:25 pm CDT July 27, 2009
UPDATED: 9:58 pm CDT July 27, 2009

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- Waukesha police are looking for an 8-year-old girl they said was abducted by her own mother at about 11:50 a.m. Monday

Melvina Boswell, 26, isn't supposed to have any unsupervised contact with her daughter, Niesha Brassfield. Boswell has a history of child neglect and is wanted on a probation violation.

Boswell took her daughter from a day care facility, police said.

Boswell lives in Waukesha's Pinepoint Apartments. Her neighbor, Cherie Topping said Niesha used to play with her oldest daughter until the children were taken away. She said Boswell is a nice person.

"I just heard about it and I'm kind of surprised," Topping said. "I don't know why she wouldn't wait, and wait it out is the better way, I think -- always better to do it legally."

Police said Boswell also has a baby, but security at the day care prevented the child from being taken.

Brian Schirmacher has been Boswell's landlord for more than a year and said she had trouble with her boyfriend.

"He came back and they had an altercation in there again and they arrested him," Schirmacher said. "I think they arrested her and I found out the kids got taken away."

Topping sympathized with Boswell, saying it has to be hard for a mother to lose her children and that it might be "driving her crazy." Topping said she is concerned for Niesha's safety.

"They should do what they have to do to protect the kids," Schirmacher said.

Police said Boswell forcefully took Brassfield from her caregivers and fled in a white 2003 Nissan four-door with Illinois plate H481210.

Boswell is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, 133 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a scar near her left eye. She also has a tattoo on her right forearm and a scar on her right arm.

Niesha has brown hair, brown eyes and is 4 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 87 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Waukesha Police Department at 262-524-3831.

Waukesha Child Abducted

By George Mallet

WAUKESHA - Police here are in an all out search for an 8-year-old girl abducted by her own mother.

Police say Niesha Brassfield was with her foster family at a Waukesha playground shortly before noon Monday, when she was forcibly abducted by her birth mother, Melvina Boswell.
Boswell has history of run-ins with police as well as a history of child neglect allegations. The courts ordered her to have no unsupervised contact with her children.

"We’re hoping that because this is the natural mother, she wouldn’t harm the child," said Waukesha Police Captain Mark Stigler as he stood outside police headquarters Monday evening. "We hope she won’t take any actions that might harm the child."

But Stigler allows that the mother may not be "in her right mind."

As the police search stretched from Milwaukee to Chicago, Waukesha parents found the drama unsettling.

"To me it’s heartbreaking," said Dave Barta as he entertained his sons Dave Junior and Dominic on a Waukesha playground. "I couldn’t imagine someone coming and taking either one of my sons."

But Jacquelyn Dotson, a young mother, has a measure of sympathy for another young mother pushed to the breaking point by the loss of her children.

All I can think of is it’s probably hard."

Police say Boswell fled with her daughter in a white, four-door Nissan with Illinois tags. That license number is H481210. If you see that car, you are urged to call Waukesha Police.

Waukesha — The 8-year-old girl who was abducted by her mother Monday was found unharmed in Chicago early Tuesday and has been returned to her foster parents, Waukesha police Capt. Mark Stigler said.

Niesha Brassfield was forcefully taken from her caregivers by her mother, 26-year-old Melvina M. Boswell, about 11:50 a.m. Monday, police said.

Police continue to search for Boswell, Stigler said Tuesday.

Brassfield had previously been removed from her mother's custody by court order and placed in protective custody.

Boswell was ordered to have no unsupervised contact with her daughter. She has a history of child neglect and is wanted on a probation violation.

Stigler thanked a number of police departments in Wisconsin and Illinois and the Wisconsin Department of Justice that helped find the girl.

I am glad she was found safe. Her mother needs to deal with the issues that caused her to lose her children in the first place...then go to court to get them back. Some people are so hard headed about facing up to their mistakes and changing things about themselves.
