Fetus Of Slain Pregnant Woman Missing
Worcester Police Ask For Public's Help
POSTED: 9:19 pm EDT July 28, 2009
UPDATED: 9:34 pm EDT July 28, 2009
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Worcester police said the fetus of a slain pregnant woman is missing and they are asking for the public's help.
After investigating, a landlord discovered the body of a female in the closet of an apartment, police said.
Worcester police said they responded to an apartment 94 Southgate Street at about 12:59 p.m. Monday.
This call was placed by the property landlord who had been there to check for a report of a strong odor coming from that apartment.
During the course of the landlord’s inspection, he discovered a deceased body of what he believed to be a woman in the closet of a bedroom.
A search warrant was obtained and Worcester police detectives processed the scene along with the Evidence Recovery Unit and members of the Crime Scene Unit.
Police said the victim was believed to be the current tenant of the apartment who was last seen on July 23.
The tenant was identified is 23-year-old Darlene Haynes. She was eight months pregnant.
Police said Haynes, who had been deceased for several days, was discovered wrapped in bedding.
Her body was transported to the Boston Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, which was performed Tuesday. The cause of death was ruled a homicide. Exact cause of death will be pending toxicology results.
During the examination, it was revealed that the victim's fetus was removed. The fetus was not recovered at the scene and detectives are searching for this fetus which, according to medical personnel, could survive but will need medical attention immediately.
The investigation is ongoing and detectives urge the public that if they have any information pertaining to this homicide or if they have any information on the infant to contact the Worcester Police Department Detective Bureau at 508-799-8651.

Darlene Haynes
Police in central Massachusetts are trying to figure out who killed an expectant mother as they search for the fetus removed from her womb before her body was dumped in a closet.
Darlene Haynes was about eight months pregnant when she was last seen alive. Her body was discovered Monday after her landlord went to check on a report of a strong odor coming from her apartment in Worcester, New England's second-largest city.
Police say the 23-year-old Haynes was found wrapped in bedding. An autopsy shows her fetus was removed.
Haynes's body reportedly was so mangled and decomposed that police said they could not immediately identify her gender.
Police say the missing infant could survive but would need medical attention immediately.
Haynes was estranged from her boyfriend, Roberto Rodriguez, who had previously appeared in court on charges of assaulting her but who police say is not a suspect.
“We want our baby back,” a woman who identified herself as an aunt of Haynes told the Boston Herald. “We want our grandchild back, and we want to know why.”
The medical examiner has ruled the woman's death a homicide, but the exact cause of death will not be known until toxicology results are available.
Detective Captain Edward McGinn Jr. told the Worcester Telegram that Haynes suffered head injuries.
She also had a two-year-old daughter, who is now staying with relatives.
Anyone with information on the case or the whereabouts of the baby is urged to call Worcester detectives at 508-799-8651.

I don't either Sarah...but a woman who is so desperate for a child will do anything to have one, even steal someone else's child. Cutting this child from the mothers womb tells me they may have some knowledge or experience in this field??? IDK, sickening....
I feel mental illness attached to his act..
I too hope the friend can be of some assistance in finding out who she was having wine coolers with. Being 8 months pregnant why is she drinking wine coolers anyway??

Hi LLL. LTNS.
I can understand being really desperate to have a child and how that can mess with your head, heart mind etc, (my sis was in the same position) but to actually kill someone, cut their belly open and steal a baby in my mind is taking it to a whole different extreme.
I agree mental illness could have played a part, and although you may play this out in your head..to actually do it..well It is just a sickening act which is just beyond my comprehension.
I know we should not speculate or judge but drinking whilst pregnant just made me go :eek:.(maybe she wasn't actually drinking the wine though and the friend was ??.) I hope they can find the friend quickly also, if only to help find out what happened that night, then maybe just maybe they can find this baby alive.
Reminds of the Bobbi Montgomery (sp) case. I think she got the DP for doing the same thing.

It's almost beyond even thinking about, but wouldn't the baby have died if the mother had been killed while it was in utero? Too horrible to think about.

Baby girl cut from mom's womb is found; 2 arrested
WORCESTER, Mass. -A baby girl cut from her mother's womb was found and a woman arrested after acquaintances became suspicious of her claims that she was the baby's mother, police said.
The body of the girl's mother was found Monday in a closet at her Worcester apartment. It was not until an autopsy that authorities discovered the fetus was missing.
The girl appeared to be in "fairly good health" at a New Hampshire hospital Wednesday, Worcester Police Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst said.
Julie Corey, 35, of Worcester, Mass., and a male companion were arrested in Plymouth, N.H., where police found them with the child. Corey was charged as a fugitive from justice and is to be arraigned in district court in Concord, N.H., on Thursday. She was in custody and could not be reached for comment late Wednesday, and Worcester police did not know whether she had a lawyer. Police in New Hampshire said the man was released.
Police said Corey had reportedly gone to New Hampshire to relocate. A newspaper report said she arrived at a Plymouth homeless shelter Tuesday night. She told workers there that the girl was 6 days old and identified herself as the mother but had no information on the child, according to the Union Leader in New Hampshire.
Corey was arrested the next afternoon as she tried to leave the shelter with the infant after workers alerted police and a nurse began photographing the baby with her cell phone, the report said.
The baby's mother, Darlene Haynes, was eight months pregnant. Her body was found by her landlord, William Thompson, who said a "horrifying smell" led him to her apartment, where he found her body wrapped in bedding in a closet. Her death was ruled a homicide.
"It's horrific," Thompson said Wednesday. "There's no words to describe what's going on in this building today."
The exact cause of Haynes' death has yet to be determined pending toxicology tests, but Worcester Police Detective Capt. Edward J. McGinn Jr. said the autopsy indicated Haynes suffered head injuries.
Police said the 23-year-old had apparently been dead for several days, and that she hadn't contacted family or friends since Thursday.
Haysha Toledo, a 17-year-old neighbor, said neighbors used to hear fighting from the apartment Haynes shared until recently with her boyfriend, Roberto Rodriguez.
"We used to hear her crying and screaming but no one ever really did anything," Toledo said, adding that neighbors did not want to get involved.
Haynes had a restraining order against Rodriguez, who allegedly pushed her into a glass table in June and cut her arm, then grabbed her by the throat and slapped her, according to court records. Court records also showed Rodriguez was charged with hitting Haynes in 2008 in a case that was continued without a finding.
In June, Haynes described the 24-year-old Rodriguez as her boyfriend of several years. Her landlord said Rodriguez moved out of the apartment last month.
Rodriguez was interviewed by authorities. He told WCVB-TV that Haynes was "a nice girl."
"She had her problems, you know, but nobody deserves to go (through) what she went through," he said.
Family members said she had three other children.
Her youngest, an 18-month-old girl, is in state custody, according to Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Alison Goodwin. Family members had been looking after her.
Karl Whitney, Haynes' uncle who is acting as a spokesman for the family, said Haynes' grandmother, Joanne Haynes, is raising the two other children, Jasmine, 5, and Lillian, 3.
He told the Telegram & Gazette that Haynes had picked the name Sheila Marie for her fourth child.

Darlene Haynes was eight months pregnant at the time of her death
A baby who was cut from her mother's womb has been found alive two days after the woman's body was discovered, US police have said.
A woman who had the baby with her when found in New Hampshire was charged with being a fugitive from justice.
The girl was said to be in "fairly good health," according to Worcester police Sergeant Kerry Hazelhurst.
The body of her mother, Darlene Haynes, 23, was found in her apartment on Monday, apparently killed days before.

Police named the arrested woman as Julie Corey, 35, described as an acquaintance of Ms Haynes.
She was arrested at a shelter in Plymouth, New Hampshire, after staff became suspicious of her and notified police.
She had told staff she was the mother of the six-day-old baby, the Union Leader newspaper reported.
A male companion with her at the time was questioned by police, but was later released.
Darlene Haynes' body was found in her apartment in Massachusetts on Monday after her landlord noticed a "horrifying smell".
A post-mortem examination revealed that her foetus was missing, and that she had head injuries, but the exact cause of death has yet to be determined.
Toxicology tests were being carried out, Worcester Police Detective Captain Edward McGinn Jr said.
The last known contact anyone had with Ms Haynes was a week ago when she sent a text message to a friend saying she was having drinks with a friend in her apartment.
Ms Haynes had three other girls - aged 5, 3 and 18 months.
It is not the first such case in the US.
Lisa Montgomery was convicted two years ago of murdering Bobbi Jo Stinnett, whose foetus she removed. The baby girl survived.

After enduring an abusive relationship and breaking free, this is what she gets...It's just not fair. I feel for the baby knowing shes going to grow up and ask questions about her birth mom, I really hope she is loved and taken care of enuf to endure the truth.

Gazing adoringly at the newborn child, a couple pose with pride. For Alex Dion, who cradles the tiny infant on his left arm, it is a moment of unbridled joy.
But within hours his world had fallen apart when police arrested his partner Julie Corey amid gruesome accusations that the baby he thought was his had been taken from the womb of a murdered woman.
Mr Dion he had been convinced he was the girl's father and was stunned when police moved in on him and Miss Dion as they sat in their car with the baby.
He was taken to a police station where he was horrified to learn the 4lb baby was the daughter of Darlene Haynes, 23, who had been found dead two days earlier.
The mother of three, a friend of Corey, had been eight months pregnant.
Dion, from Worcester, Massachusetts, spoke as this picture and others were released of a family celebration at which he and Corey proudly showed off 'their' new daughter, who was said last night to be in good health.
He said he and Corey, who has an 11-year-old son from a previous relationship, had dated on and off for about two years and in October she told him she was pregnant.
On Thursday last week Corey said she was taking Miss Haynes on a shopping trip.
She called him several times later that day, saying she had gone into labour and her waters had broken.
Early the next day Corey rang to say she had given birth to a baby girl in hospital and Dion called both their families with the news.
But at the celebration which followed, last Saturday, some relatives were suspicious when Corey said she had been in labour for only 20 minutes and had returned home five hours later.
She appeared to be breast-feeding the baby under a blanket but there was a bottle of formula milk nearby.
The tiny girl's umbilical cord also did not look like it had been cut by a doctor and was tied with a ribbon. Friends contacted police after hearing of Haynes's death.
Yesterday Dion told a newspaper: 'I am so confused. I don't know what to think. I thought I had a brand new daughter.'
Of the arrest on Wednesday, he said: 'We were sitting in the car and we were talking and the baby was in the back seat. I look up and I see a gun in my face.'

This woman definately has mental problems. She had this man thinking she was pregnant with his child. She goes into labor, gives birth and is home 5 hours later...someone did see the umbilical cord being tied with a ribbon and called police..kudos to that person...
She took it so far, even to appear to be breast feeding "her" baby even as a bottle was next to her..
This woman has evil attached to her for she "cut" this baby from it's mothers womb and for that I do hope she gets life in prison...she can't be trusted to walk the streets...:0009:

Mass. woman charged with murder in womb-cut case
By DENISE LAVOIE (AP) – 1 hour ago
BOSTON — A woman who authorities believe faked her own pregnancy was charged Thursday with killing her pregnant friend, cutting her baby girl from her womb and kidnapping the infant.
Julie Corey, 35, was initially charged with kidnapping after authorities found her and the 4-pound girl in a homeless shelter in Plymouth, N.H., in July. On Thursday, a Worcester County grand jury returned indictments charging Corey with both kidnapping and murder.
DNA tests showed that the baby was cut from the womb of Darlene Haynes, 23. Haynes was eight months pregnant when she was killed in her Worcester apartment.
Authorities said Julie Corey, of Worcester, and her boyfriend were friends with Haynes and her boyfriend.
In the months before Haynes was killed, Corey told her family and her boyfriend that she was pregnant. Her boyfriend's family said she introduced a baby girl to them at a family gathering on July 25, two days before Haynes' body was found in a closet, wrapped in bedding.
The state medical examiner determined the cause of death to be "blunt force trauma, asphyxia by ligature strangulation and incision of abdomen."
Corey will plead not guilty when she is arraigned on the murder and kidnapping charges in Worcester Superior Court, said her attorney, Louis Aloise. No date has been set for the arraignment.
"Other than the fact that there was a homicide, I don't know what evidence they have linking her to the particular crime," Aloise said.
Aloise said he believes several people, including Haynes' boyfriend and Corey's boyfriend, "were in a position to be in the company of Miss Haynes at or around the time of her death."
No one else has been charged.
Tim Connolly, a spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., declined to comment on the indictment. He also declined to comment on whether authorities expect to charge anyone else.

He is kidding, isn't he??? She had possession of that infant that DNA proves was Darlene's baby.
He would stand a better chance for his client if he tried to deem her mentally incapacitated..for she truly had to be insane to do that to Darlene...JMHO
