Missing cat found in owner's lost suitcase

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The last time cat-owner Kelly Levy saw her tiger-striped feline was before she took her husband to the airport.

The 24-year-old came back to her house late Friday to find the bottom step, where Gracie Mae would usually be waiting, empty.

Levy tore the house apart looking for the 10-month-old tabby who had been spayed just days before. She and her dad took out bathroom tiles and part of a cabinet to check a crawl space and papered the neighborhood with "lost cat" signs.

Then she got a phone call.

"Hi, you're not going to believe this, but I am calling from Fort Worth, Texas, and I accidentally picked up your husband's luggage. And when I opened the luggage, a cat jumped out," Levy recalled the caller saying, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Rob Carter, of Fort Worth, told The Dallas Morning News for its online edition Tuesday that he made it home with the suitcase.

"I went to unpack and saw some of the clothes and saw it wasn't my suitcase," Carter said. "I was going to close it, and a kitten jumped out and ran under the bed. I screamed like a little girl."

Carter said that he eventually was able to get the cat to come out from under the bed.

"In the morning, I got close enough to see its collar and the phone number on it," he said. "So I called the number and got a hold of the crying wife of the traveler."

Gracie Mae had crawled into Seth Levy's black suitcase undetected, been put through an X-ray machine, loaded onto an airplane, thrown onto a baggage claim conveyor belt and picked up by a stranger.

Carter delivered Gracie Mae to Seth Levy and the tabby made the 1,300-mile trip home on an $80 plane ticket Sunday night.

Carter said that he considered keeping the cat before he knew she had a home.

"If I couldn't have found a good home, I would have kept it," he said. "We were going to name it Suitcase."

OMG, could you imagine opening up a suitcase and an animal pops out?

Just glad to see she was found safe and sound.

A long time ago I used to live in this single wide mobile home that was completely dilapidated (out on my own young, have many stories). It was my first summer there and I was brushing my teeth one morning, leaning over the sink. This damn tree frog lept out of the drain in the sink...I about swallowed my toothbrush, jumped back and wacked my head on the cabinet behind me. I can totally relate to this guy screaming like "a little girl". If I hadn't of been choking on my toothbrush...

I'm shocked the cat wasn't hurt, and scared that this could happen!! I'm sure glad someone was at their home when they opened the bag though, I bet the owners would have never found thier cat if the airport had opened it... or a lesser guy than this Mr. Carter.........say, was there any mention of a Mrs. Carter? LOL

No, Gibby, there was no mention of a Mrs. Carter. :girl_haha: He apparently loves animals, though, so would be a good catch for someone.

I was telling my daughter about this over the phone, and she told me that years ago a friend had been visiting another friend, and the cat got in his car without anyone seeing it.

So he leaves, is driving down the road, and feels something furry rubbing against his neck. It was winter, and I guess the cat just wanted to keep warm.

I'll bet he screamed like a little girl, too, LOL.

I definitely would lose it on the road like that!! Yikes!! Glad kitty didn't get under the hood to stay warm! I used to honk my horn every time I got in the car to make sure I didn't kill a cat in winter, but that was when I lived in Iowa and there was always a mouser around.

I got me a good catch... I'll let one of these other fine ladies become Mrs. Carter. :girl_haha:

I used to have a cat (Samantha) who would get in my suitcase to keep me from packing and leaving on a trip. I always made sure she got out, plus she was a chunky baby. I lost her to Fibras Sarcoma in Sept. of 1997. My Abby, that I have now, looks and acts like her twin. Abby just turned 10.

This is silly, but, did Abby turn 10 in September?

Yes, she did. Samantha passed away on 9/5/97. I had another cat, Sydney. However, it wasn't until October that I decided to get another kitty, since Sydney always had Samantha as her buddy. Abby, was born on 9/6/97, per the Vet's assistant that rescued her mom, her and her brother.

If you believe, as I do, that some things shouldn't be questioned, just happily accepted, this is one of them. :)

Yes, I do. When I read your post, my gut knew why you asking about Abby's birthdate. I've never said anything to anyone else because they would think I was nuts.

Thanks! :)

If you're nuts, then so am I. I saw the 1997 for Samantha, then that Abby was 10 and acted exactly like her, and I said whoa!

"Nuts" to those who would say "just coincidence"!
