Search goes on for Crosby woman

Aug. 11, 2009, 9:54PM

Authorities continue to search for an elderly Crosby woman with Alzheimer's disease who went missing Thursday.

Doris King, 71, was last seen by her husband, William King, about 9:30 p.m., when she drove away from their home near Foley Road and FM 2100 in a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, said Harris County Constable Precinct 3 officials.

William King contacted authorities Friday morning when she did not return.

Doris King, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia, is under a doctor's care. She also takes medication, constable officials said. The Texas Department of Public Safety has issued a silver alert and authorities have asked the public safety department in Louisiana to issue a missing person alert, Constable Capt. Jack Hagee said on Tuesday.

Deputies have organized search parties to comb the Crosby area to locate her or her vehicle. Authorities also have contacted all hospitals in the area and the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office is looking for Doris King or any Jane Does.

William told authorities that his wife has left home at least twice before and has been found near her home, Hagee said.

Doris King left home Thursday night after an argument with her husband, Hagee said. She had about $75 cash in her purse but no credit cards that police could use to track her whereabouts. She also did not have a cell phone, he said.

So far, there is no indication of foul play in her disappearance, he said.

She is described as 5 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing 125 pounds. She has blue eyes and gray hair.

She was last seen wearing a blue shirt and unknown color pants.

Her vehicle has Texas plates bearing MCY 785. The car has two registration stickers on the front windshield. The inspection sticker was pulled off and replaced with a registration sticker by mistake.

Anyone with information about Doris King should contact Constable Ken Jones Office, patrol division, at 713-637-0014. After 5 p.m., call 281-427-4791 or 713-453-6959.

CROSBY, Texas - The body of an elderly woman missing since last Thursday has been found about a mile from her car in a wooded area of Dayton.

Doris King, 71, was spotted by a Houston police helicopter just after 9 a.m., one week after her disappearance.

King's husband, William King, says his wife suffered from dementia and was last seen driving near their Crosby home on the night of Aug. 6.

Searchers on Wednesday found the woman's car stuck in water and mud near County Road 6242.

According to her husband, last Thursday she got angry, demanded her car keys and drove off from their home. He worries Alzheimer disease and Dementia may have made it tough for his wife to find her way home.

The car popped up nearly twenty miles away from their home. Investigators found some of her personal property inside the car.

Bloodhounds picked up her scent. Their movement hints at the path she may have followed from her car. The dog was moving north from the location of the vehicle on the road way, said Harris County Sheriff Deputy Sgt. Mike Conner.

"She is not a walker, she can walk, but she doesn't walk very much," said Kings husband.

Investigators say the car's doors were unlocked. The Houston Police lake division is assisted Harris County with the investigation. Officers searched nearby waterways for any clues to King's disappearance.

According to the National Alzheimer's Association, 60 percent of people with dementia will wander away.

If they're not located with 24 hours, half will suffer serious injury or death.
