SANDUSKY, Ohio — A night-shift nurse accused of sexually abusing as many as two dozen elderly or disabled patients at a nursing home was in jail Wednesday, authorities said.
Many of the victims at Concord Care and Rehabilitation Center were unable to report the abuse, and some have since died, said Perkins Township Police Chief Tim McClung.
Police said they suspect as many as 24 victims, judging by statements suspect John Riems made under questioning.
Riems, 49, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Sandusky Municipal Court to felony charges of rape and gross sexual imposition. The jail didn't have information on an attorney for Riems.
The director at the nursing home said in a statement that Riems had been fired.
"We cannot share any more detail at this time out of respect for the privacy of our residents, and in light of the ongoing police investigation," Jessica Short said in the statement.
Investigators are looking into Riems' past, which includes employment at other facilities. McClung wouldn't identify the other places where he worked.

Officials say Riems had far more concerning behavior: the 49-year-old is accused of raping and assaulting a paralyzed patient at a nursing home; the victim list could reach 100 if investigators believe what Riems claims.
Riems also kept to himself for the two decades he lived at Bayshore Estates and during the 22 years since he graduated from nursing school. He moved quietly from job to job — police say as many as 10 — and seldom engaged with his neighbors.
Police say Riems sexually assaulted a 55-year-old man as he lay partially paralyzed in his bed at Concord Care and Rehabilitation Home, a one-story, brick care facility surrounded by a tract of tri-level homes.
"We've had several residents, they don't want him touching them, they don't want him in their room," said Cynthia Wilson, a 47-year-old nurse's aide who was fired in December. "A lot of them would refuse their meds just to keep him out of their room."
Police say Riems admitted to abusing almost 100 patients since he started work but can recall specifics for only about two dozen.
He also would remain in a room alone with patients for up to an hour at a time, Wilson said.
"We don't know what he's doing in the room with the doors shut so long," she said. "I've questioned him, 'John, why are you in the room so long?' He would tell us all, 'This is none of your business."'

The ultimate predator. He picked the most helpless to raped and emotionally torture. And now, who knows if they will ever get the whole truth from him. It really makes me angry that there were apparently co-workers who questioned his behavior and admin of these nursing homes didn't listen to them.

Colleagues: Ohio Nurse Accused of Nursing Home Rape Had Temper

If everyone knew this man had a temper and would swear at patients, why didn't someone see this as a warning sign? I can imagine caring for these patients can be very hard. Many patients can be bedridden or unable to assist themselves. However, people in this guys position do not swear at patients or lose their temper. This is a big red flag on his behavior.

You said it. My God, those poor people, so helpless, unable to fight back. I hope he dies.
I will never let my mother be put in a home. As long as I'm able, she's here safe with me.

Yeah, can you imagine behaving this way at your job, and not being fired right off? Caring for very sick people is a terribly difficult job. I actually think that these jobs should be part time requiring 4 hours or less. It's stressful, depressing....etc. But, this guy wanted the job. He wanted the job so he could rape and get away with it. Well, he'll get his in prison, and then some.

You know if he had behaved at any other job losing his temper in such a way, he would have been fired. When he gets to prison, I hope they put him in an area where he will become some Big Bubba's boy toy. Let him go through what he put these people through. He will deserve every bit of what he gets.

Administration and Director of Nursing and anyone else that questioned his behavior, but didn't say anything, needs to be held accountable.
There would be no way that I could keep my mouth shut if I witnessed this. If nothing was done then the State needed to be called.
