ANADARKO — Police found the mutilated body of the Rev. Carol Daniels in a "crucifix position” behind her church altar last Sunday, The Oklahoman learned from sources close to the investigation.
Sources confirmed that Daniels’ bloodied corpse appeared to have been left in the form of a cross with both arms outstretched to the sides. Sources also said investigators were disturbed by two other facts at the crime scene:
• The killer took Daniels’ clothes, perhaps to hide evidence or as a grisly trophy.
• The killer methodically took time to spray a dissolving chemical around the body in an apparent effort to destroy any DNA evidence.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The son of the pastor who was brutally killed inside her Oklahoma church says her funeral will be another chance for his mother to spread the word of God.
Services for 61-year-old Carol Daniels will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Oklahoma City. Daniels' mutilated body was discovered Aug. 23 at her small Pentecostal church in Anadarko (an-uh-DAHR'-koh.) Investigators say her body was moved into an unnatural position after she was killed. Also, a preliminary autopsy report shows she suffered multiple gashes to her neck and chest.
Alvin Daniels told KOCO-TV that all his mother wanted to do was preach about God. She drove 60 miles every week to Anadarko to hold services.
No arrests have been made in her killing.

So scary how many sick murderers are out there. What a shame that this pastor had to be a victim of one of them. I hope the culprit is found and swiftly brought to justice. What is wrong with these people...what happens to turn them into such evil demons?

This murder has been in the news since the 23rd and up until today or maybe yesterday, LE has said she was left in an unnatural position. Each time, they have intimated it was too despicable to tell.
I've wondered what the position could be and the only thing I could think that was highly unusual was that they had her propped up with her weight on her shoulders and her hips up in the air. What else could be so shocking and unlike anything they'd seen before. A crucifix position... isn't shocking. Arms out and the rest of the body straight down and they aren't even sure that's what was intended. There was even the meeting with all the pastors in the area to alert them about the crucifix deal, continuing with not telling the public about this shocking position.
No matter what, it's horrible, a horrible horrible murder of a nice person who helped others..

When it came out on the news they did warn other pastors to be careful.

LE not only warned other pastors to be careful... they had a private meeting with area pastors and would not allow any others in the room, no media at all.

Reward hiked to $15K in pastor's killing
posted 09/01/09 4:35 pm
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has released an incident report from police officers who initially found a pastor dead in an Anadarko church. According to the report, officer Ashley Burrus discovered Carol Daniels about 12:02 p.m. Aug. 23 after a couple asked police to check on Daniels. The report states that Burrus entered the south door of Worthy Temple Christ Holy Sanctified Church and noticed Daniels' body. Capt. Dwaine Miller stated he saw the victim "lying prone on the floor just inside the door to the sanctuary." The 61-year-old Daniels suffered mulitple gashes to her neck and throat, as well as stab wounds to her chest, back, stomach and hands. OSBI inspector Steve Neuman said Tuesday the reward in the case is now $15,000.

Officials hunt leads in minister's killing

ANADARKO — Investigators have searched the living quarters of a man who said he saw the Rev. Carol Daniels' killer. They have also interviewed at least one convicted felon and want to question another felon with Caddo County ties as the investigation continues in the Aug. 23 homicide.
Robert Richardson — a local man who goes by the nickname "Florida Kid" — said he told police he saw the killer leave the Christ Holy Sanctified Church as he drank a beer across the street at a car wash where he sometimes lives.
"Suddenly, I looked up and saw this man leaving the church all covered in blood," said Richardson, who sometimes sleeps in the equipment room of the car wash and sometimes beds down in a nearby garage. "I was shocked. He was a big guy black, bald head, and he was carrying a knife. He turned, though, so I didn't get a good look at his face."
The body of Daniels, 61, was found by police just after noon Aug. 23, nude and in what appeared to be a crucifix position on the blood-soaked carpet behind the church altar. A state Medical Examiner's Office report shows that she was savagely cut on her neck, left breast, stomach and back.

Anadarko inquiry into pastor's death continues
Officials question a few, search for others in hopes of finding pastor’s killer
BY RON JACKSON
Published: September 3, 2009
ANADARKO — Investigators have searched the living quarters of a man who said he saw the Rev. Carol Daniels’ killer, interviewed at least one convicted felon and are looking to question another felon with Caddo County ties as the quest continues to make an arrest in the Aug. 23 homicide.
Robert Richardson — a local drifter who goes by the nickname "Florida Kid” — said he told police he saw the killer exit the Christ Holy Sanctified Church as he drank a beer across the street at a grungy car wash where he sometimes lives.
"Suddenly, I looked up and saw this man leaving the church all covered in blood,” said Richardson, who sometimes sleeps in the equipment room of the car wash and sometimes beds in a nearby garage. "I was shocked. He was a big guy ... black, bald head, and he was carrying a knife. He turned (north along Broadway Avenue), though, so I didn’t get a good look at his face. I think he was wearing some sort of overalls, but to be honest, I couldn’t really tell.”
The body of Daniels, 61, was found by police about 12:10 p.m. Aug. 23, nude and in what appeared to be a crucifix position on the blood-soaked carpet behind the church altar. A medical examiner’s report shows she was savagely cut about the neck, left breast, stomach and back.
Sources close to the investigation told The Oklahoman the killer left with Daniels’ clothes and used some sort of dissolving spray around the body.
Richardson, 63, said he went to the Anadarko Police Department later in the day Sunday to report what he had seen. He said he waited because he had been drinking and didn’t think police would believe him.
"They told me to go home and they’d have someone come talk to me,” Richardson said. "Later, some OSBI (Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation) agents came to see me. But they just looked around my place (the garage) suspicious-like, and didn’t seem too interested in what I had to say.”
OSBI Inspector Steve Neuman neither confirmed nor denied agents visited Richardson.
"I hadn’t heard that name, but that doesn’t mean agents didn’t talk to him,” Neuman said. "Let’s put it this way, if he were someone important, I would have known about him.”
Tips continue to flow in from the public, but Neuman said they have amounted to "nothing substantial.”
"No arrests have been made,” Neuman added. "This is going to be a slow, ongoing investigation.”
Neuman confirmed investigators are trying to find convicted felon Michael Hinton Jr., who grew up in the neighborhood where Danies was killed.
"He’s one of about 50 people we’re looking to talk to,” Neuman said. "I wouldn’t rank him any higher than anyone else.”
Hinton was charged along with Lawrence Nuckols Jr. in Caddo County in June 1980 with the first-degree rape of a female younger than 14, according to county court records. Hinton served nearly 14 years in prison for kidnapping the girl. Nuckols received 10 years on a conviction for the rape charge, county records show.
Hinton, 54, is the son of Mildred Hinton — a close friend of Daniels and a Christ Holy Sanctified Church founding member. Mildred Hinton died in December.
"He hasn’t lived in Oklahoma in eight years,” said Lawrence Hinton of Anadarko, who is Michael Hinton Jr.’s brother. "The last time I saw him was in December at our mother’s funeral. The police know he didn’t kill her, so I don’t know why they’re hunting him.”
Erin Hinton, 28, said OSBI agents have questioned her about her father’s whereabouts, but she said the two have been estranged for years.
"She (Daniels) was such a beautiful person. We were very close. She blessed my four children.”
As for Nuckols, neighbors say they haven’t seen him in Anadarko in more than a year.
Lawrence Nuckols Sr. said police interviewed him briefly but he doesn’t know whether they have questioned any other relatives. Nuckols Sr.’s home is about 90 feet from the back of the church.
Convicted felon Newton Akeen of Carnegie voluntarily came in for questioning, Neuman said.
Akeen, 43, spent time in prison for kidnapping, unauthorized use of a vehicle and robbery. He was released from prison in 2005, according to state Corrections Department records.
"My brother didn’t have anything to do with this ... ,” said Georgia Akeen of Gracemont. "Basically, if you’re an Indian and you walk by the police department in Anadarko, you’re going to get pulled in for questioning. It’s an outrage.
"I know my brother was convicted of a violent crime, but he’s innocent. ... He was at home with his wife and stepdaughter.”
Last week, a television crew filmed investigators removing several bags from the cellar of a rent house two doors from the church. Owner Alicia Theif said she thought someone might have slept in the cellar overnight and reported the suspected break-in to police last Thursday.
Neuman declined to comment on the potential evidence.
"I don’t know if there’s any connection or not,” Theif said. "I just hope they catch whoever did this. It’s scary.”

Below is an exerpt re Anadarko. I was there once to visit some of the NA exhibits. It mentions the town being "rough." When we were there, we made certain to be gone before dark:
...Culturally, Anadarko is unique among Oklahoma cities as Native Americans form a near-majority. Locals are often familiar with a few basic Indian words, such as "haw-nay," being Kiowa for "no." Wichita and Apache words are sometimes employed in casual conversation as well like "ninit, wee, hangy dawg, stink guy) . Indian motifs are commonly used for design, art, and other aspects of daily life.
Anadarko is also sometimes called Dodge, a reference to Dodge City, Kansas because of the town's rough reputation; additionally, the town may be called Darko, as an abbreviation.<Need Citation>
Anadarko is the home of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office. The town is situated between the Wichita, Caddo, and Delaware reservations to the north, and the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache reservations to the south. These reservations, along with all but the Osage Reservation in northeastern Oklahoma, were dismantled by the allotment of tribal lands and the opening of the "excess" lands to settlement in a series of land openings; the area surrounded by Anadako was opened to settlement by a 1901 land lottery affecting the Kiowa, Comanche, Wichita and Caddo lands.
Anadarko is home to Riverside Indian School, a boarding and day school for Native American students.

Oct. 4--The clock continues to tick on state investigators trying to solve the homicide of the Rev. Carol Daniels, whose nude and mutilated body was found Aug. 23 inside her small Anadarko church. Authorities have not announced any persons of interest or identified any suspects.
Oklahomans have seen such a scenario unfold repeatedly in recent years with unsolved homicide cases in towns such as Poteau, Cordell, Buffalo Valley and, perhaps most notably, Weleetka. As time passes, are investigators are also battling the odds of these cases ever being solved.
"If you don't have any solid leads in the first 48 to 72 hours, then it gets tough," said Cleveland County Undersheriff Rhett Burnett, speaking in general terms and based on 27 years in law enforcement. "If you got nothing after 72 hours, then you should be really concerned. That's why investigators have a heavy, heavy burden on their shoulders when they go to a crime scene.

Anadarko still dazed by pastor’s brutal slaying
BY RON JACKSON
Published: November 29, 2009
ANADARKO — The silence grows louder in Anadarko.
Three months have passed since the Rev. Carol Daniels, 61, was found dead, nude and mutilated behind the altar of her tiny Christ Holy Sanctified Church, yet state investigators have made no arrests. Nor have they held a news conference to update the public on the investigation in this Caddo County city of 6,300 people.
"People still call us, wanting to know if we’ve heard anything new,” Carolyn McBride, editor of the Anadarko Daily News, said of the Aug. 23 slaying.
McBride and her staff have been covering the case under trying circumstances, working out of a makeshift office since a fire destroyed their building on Aug. 22. Authorities say the two events appear to be unrelated.
"They’re still concerned,” said McBride, referring to the townspeople and the investigation. "But it’s really hard because we can’t tell them anything new. Nobody is telling us a thing.”
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown said that is because there "isn’t much to say.”
"It’s an open and ongoing investigation, and we’re doing everything we know to do to catch the person so we can prosecute this case,” Brown said.
So does Anadarko Mayor Jerry Marcum. He said he clearly sees the residue of fear lingering in his community.
"Folks are still uneasy,” Marcum said.
"Nobody knows what’s going on. This was a heinous murder — a pastor in a church. That’s supposed to be a safe place. I know people are concerned because there are still a lot of questions.
"I just tell people, ‘Don’t give up.’ The Big Guy is still on our side.”
Anadarko Police Chief David Edwards did not return messages left by The Oklahoman.
Pastor Randy Robertson of First Baptist Church said there are still a few members of his congregation who have not returned to church since the slaying.
"There is still a climate of fear, but not as much as it was in the beginning,” Robertson said. "I’d say life has gotten back to normal, but it’s still in the background — people are still concerned. Nobody knows anything. I just refuse to live in a climate of fear.”
Kermit Gaines, who owns a restaurant on Anadarko’s east side, said residents have not forgotten.
"People still talk a lot,” Gaines said. "I don’t think it’s so much fear as much as it was just such a heinous deal. We just try to keep the family in our prayers, and they will find some justice.”
Anyone with information can call the OSBI at (800) 522-8017.
A $10,000 reward is offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Warrant to search MySpace page issued in Anadarko pastor's death
RUSSELL CARTER REPORTING
ANADARKO, OK -- New details are starting to surface involving the death of an Oklahoma pastor. Back on August 23rd members of the Anadarko police department found the body of Carol Daniels dead inside of her church.
The 61-year-old's body allegedly stabbed, burned, and staged by the killer.
Thursday afternoon sources told NewsChannel 4 that a warrant was issued to search the church, and to gain access to a MySpace account that belongs to a rock band that was in town during the murder.
Because the warrant is sealed officials from OSBI can't talk about the details, but are confident about solving this case.
"This is a murder case (and) we are not in a hurry we want to do everything correctly and put together all of the right information on any possible suspects because when it goes to trial we want to make sure we have the right person," said spokesperson Jessica Brown.

DA criticizes OSBI over Carol Daniels inquiry
ANADARKO PASTOR WAS KILLED, MUTILATED IN AUGUST
BY RON JACKSON
Published: December 6, 2009
ANADARKO — Concerns are mounting over the investigation into the death of pastor Carol Daniels.
Caddo County District Attorney Bret Burns and Charles Etta Dunlap — the pastor’s mother — spoke publicly for the first time last week about the direction of the case. The overriding theme is one of deep concern.
No arrest has been made, and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown said there is no primary suspect and leads have all but dried up.
"I’m concerned about the progress of the investigation,” Burns said. "We have all placed our trust in the OSBI to catch the killer or killers.”
Burns added one other thought — one that Caddo County residents have often shared while reflecting on the grisly Aug. 23 slaying. "I live here,” said Burns, an Anadarko native who lives in nearby Amber. "This is my community.”
Dunlap said she is baffled by OSBI’s silence.
"I’m concerned with the progress of the investigation because I haven’t heard anything,” she said. "They (OSBI agents) talked to us in the beginning, but we haven’t heard from anyone since then. Yes, I’m concerned. They seem to be solving all these other cases.”
The Oklahoman’s request to interview OSBI Director A. DeWade Langley was denied by Brown, who said it is her job to speak to the media. She defended her agency’s handling of the case.
"The media has stymied the investigation by releasing all the information it has,” Brown said. "It’s hard for us to bring someone in for questioning. The answers to the questions are all out there.”
Police found Daniels’ mutilated and nude body in what appeared to be a "crucifix position” behind the altar of her tiny Christ Holy Sanctified Church. The initial autopsy report, which OSBI officials fought to withhold, was released through an Open Records request, revealing the pastor’s hair had been set on fire and her head nearly cut off.
Daniels, 61, drove to Anadarko from her Oklahoma City home to preach to whoever walked into her empty church. The pastor drove to Anadarko every Sunday, even when the weather was bad.
"I think all options should be on the table,” said Burns, referring to the investigation’s resources. "I’ve offered OSBI anything they need. They have my full support.”
Burns said he offered the services of his own investigator, Lewis Garrison. To date, Burns said, Garrison has been called on by OSBI to handle only a few investigative tasks.
OSBI agents are historically swamped with cases. An average workload for agents is "between 15 and 17 cases,” noted Brown, who said no agent has the luxury of working solely on one case. She then clarified the issue of whether state agents have enough resources in this case.
"They (OSBI agents) will ask if they need more resources, and if they ask, they know they will get more,” she said. "This is not an agent problem as to why this case hasn’t been solved. We have the resources. What we don’t have are the leads.”
Last month, a multi-agency task force was created in Le Flore County to investigate two unsolved cases — the homicide of Poteau bar owner Joe Neff and the suspicious death of Jody Rilee Wilson. The task force includes investigators from OSBI, the FBI, the U.S. Marshal’s Office, the Le Flore County Sheriff’s Department and the Le Flore County District Attorney’s office.
Asked whether a task force might be needed in the Anadarko case, Brown said, "A task force means nothing without leads.”
She compared the Anadarko case to the June 8, 2008, killings of Taylor Placker, 13, and Skyla Whitaker, 11, in Weleetka — another high-profile OSBI case that remains unsolved. In Weleetka, OSBI staged several news conferences on the steps of the Okfuskee County Courthouse and even set up a command post.
None of those steps were taken in Anadarko.
"In the Weleetka case, we had hundreds of leads come in,” Brown said. "We didn’t have anything like that in this (Anadarko) case, not even a tenth of the amount of leads.”
The OSBI’s most notable progress appears to be the clearing of potential suspects. A number of people have been cleared by alibis, Brown said.
"At first they (OSBI agents) said they had three people they were suspicious of, but I guess nothing ever came of that,” Dunlap said. "We just hope they can catch whoever did this because they’re still out there.”
As for updates for Dunlap from OSBI, Brown said, "We don’t have anything to tell her. If she wants to call us, she has our number, and she’s welcome to call. We just don’t have anything to tell the family, certainly nothing that will bring them peace. ... I wish that weren’t the case.”

DA, Slain Pastor's Mother Want Answers in Anadarko Murder
Posted: Dec 06, 2009 5:28 PM EST Updated: Dec 07, 2009 3:14 PM EST
Associated Press
ANADARKO, Oklahoma -- The local prosecutor and the mother of the pastor who was killed at her small-town church say they are dismayed at the lack of the progress in the hunt for the killer.
The Rev. Carol Daniels, 61, was found Aug. 23 inside Christ Holy Sanctified Church in Anadarko. She had multiple gashes to her neck and throat, as well as stab wounds to her chest, back, stomach and hands.
Caddo County District Attorney Bret Burns, who earlier called the killing the "most horrific" he has seen, said that as part of the Anadarko community, he wants police to find the killer.
"I'm concerned about the progress of the investigation," Burns said. "We have all placed our trust in the (Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation) to catch the killer or killers."
Charles Etta Dunlap, the pastor's mother, said she's frustrated that there has been no arrest and that agents have stopped giving her updates.
"They (OSBI agents) talked to us in the beginning, but we haven't heard from anyone since then," Dunlap told The Oklahoman newspaper. "Yes, I'm concerned. They seem to be solving all these other cases."
OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said there is no primary suspect and leads have all taken officers to dead ends.
Brown said news coverage has hurt the investigation.
"The media has stymied the investigation by releasing all the information it has," Brown said. "It's hard for us to bring someone in for questioning. The answers to the questions are all out there."
Brown said Dunlap wasn't being updated because the agency had nothing new to say.
"We just don't have anything to tell the family, certainly nothing that will bring them peace," Brown said. "I wish that weren't the case."
Police found Daniels' mutilated and nude body in what appeared to be a crucifixion position behind the altar of her tiny Christ Holy Sanctified Church. The initial autopsy report, which OSBI officials fought to withhold, was released through an open records request, disclosed that the pastor's hair had burned and that she'd nearly been decapitated.
Daniels drove to Anadarko from her Oklahoma City home to preach each Sunday.
"I think all options should be on the table," Burns said, referring to the investigation's resources. "I've offered OSBI anything they need. They have my full support."
Brown said staffing isn't an issue in the investigation.
"This is not an agent problem as to why this case hasn't been solved. We have the resources. What we don't have are the leads," Brown said.
She compared the Anadarko case to the June 8, 2008, killings of Taylor Placker, 13, and Skyla Whitaker, 11, in Weleetka -- another high-profile OSBI case that remains unsolved. In Weleetka, OSBI staged several news conferences on the steps of the Okfuskee County Courthouse and even set up a command post.
The agency didn't take those steps after Daniels' murder.
"In the Weleetka case, we had hundreds of leads come in," Brown said. "We didn't have anything like that in this (Anadarko) case, not even a tenth of the amount of leads."
