actually, i've calmed down some since i first got this one. i got a call mon nite from someone who needs me to take in her gsd. he's 5 & she told me he was neutered & basically husband doesn't like the dog, don't have time etc, etc. i've heard it all before. she was supposed to talk with him & find when they could bring him up. now, i had talked to her about a month ago & i was full then (& still am) but she said she'd have him fixed & call me back. the call back was mon nite. tues nite i get a phone call from her neighbor. she tells me she's the one bringing the dog up. she also tells me the dog is NOT neutered & the owner was ashamed to admit that her husband wouldn't allow it. neighbor tells me the whole story, the dog is 5, has been outside his whole life, she thinks he's underweight, not fixed & the azzholes had his canine teeth FILED DOWN!!!!!!!! even i've never heard of this one before. this was done by a vet. i can't wait until i find this vets name. i'm going to do everything in my power to bring him down & my vet will back me. oh yeah, & he hasn't been vaccinated in years, for anything.

please light a candle that nothing goes wrong & i get him on sunday. i feel so guilty that i could have saved him a month ago, but i didn't know the whole story. the idiot owners had better hope that i never talk to them or see them.

That poor baby! Damn neglectful owners like that!!!

I've never heard of having canine teeth filed down. Why the heck would they do that??

Don't blame yourself, Mary. You had no way of knowing they were lying. Good for the neighbor who stepped in and told you the truth.

Please let us know if he arrives safely on Sunday. He won't have to be outside and alone anymore.

Definitely lighting a candle, Mary.

I've heard of this before - we had a dog come into the rescue that had his teeth filed down AND his voicebox removed. Poor thing couldn't make a sound.

One of the dogs that stays at the kennel where we occasionally board our dogs also had its voice box removed. I just think that's so cruel. I've never heard of the teeth being filed down but it sounds horrible.

OMG!! What the hell!!! Please update us Mary. If the owners do not bring that poor soul in, maybe the neighbor will. Sounds like this is one dog that needs to be rescued by caring people. You are definately the right kind of people.
It is in a dogs nature to be protective, removing their voicebox is only taking away from their innate gift to humans. What a shame. Please let us know soon.

:1187603408.CR.MotheI just hate to hear when people get a dog and then decide later it will not work. Such a shame. It is better for them to give the dog up rather than keep a pet they do not want or cannot handle.

Shocked to read where some dogs have had their voice box removed and can no longer bark. Why in the world would a vet do that to a pet for any reason other than for life-saving reasons?

Roamer

Barking is normal and natural to a dog. To remove their voice box takes away one of their natural instincts, and I think it's deplorable.

I met a dog who was sold that way as an older pup because the breeder was in town and the neighbors kept calling on them about barking dogs, so they just had them all clipped... or that was the story I got from te current owner anyway.

I've heard people talk about having the teeth filed down but I thought it was a (unfunny) joke. :(

I hope he turns out ok otherwise. Are you in a high heartworm area?

Man I love you Mary ♥

maryhaze
01-25-2008, 08:50 AM
i love you too honey! no, heartworm isn't real prevalent up here but lyme is. when he comes in, i'm having a full blood panel done so we know what we're starting with. i have had luck with treating heartworm tho. why do you ask?

gibbrishclown
01-25-2008, 08:53 AM
because they wouldn't have done anything to prevent it and it's so costly to treat... in NC it would be a big concern. I just didn't knw since you were up in an area I've never really been to.

I wonder how he is... I hope he's as happy to be off that chain as his owners are to be rid of him and he's not too traumatized from a whole life of frustration and neglect. :( I'm so glad he's coming to you, Mary... even though you're packed to the gills. You'er os amazing.

i'm pissed that i waited so long. he could have been out of there a month ago if they had told me the truth. he's coming in from cape cod, so there is a chance he's HW+, but i'll find out with the panel.

Well you were lied to!! You didn't wait on this scenario, you waited on what was represented to you as the case, and you were lied to!

So what all special needs face a dog with filed down teeth? Proofs teeth are worn down at 5 years old and look filed down. She does'nt have any problems, but I don't know how far down his are filed... man that's awful to think about. You got a name picked?

maryhaze
01-25-2008, 09:15 AM
the needs are gonna depend on how far gone they are. i hope they don't have to be extracted but if the nerve is exposed, who knows? his name is Spy now, i have to change it. i also have a 1 yr named capone that needs a new name. i'm trying to stay with the heroes, gods theme, but i'm out of ideas. any suggestions?

sadly I'm pretty poorly researched in the heroes and gods realm, I'm sorry, but if I see antying I'll run back here with it!!

I should hope a vet wouldn't expose the nerve... I can't fathom the pain that would cause.

Do you have a Wotan yet? (Pronounced Votan.) Otherwise, the Norse gods don't offer too much. Brunhilde might be okay for a female dog, or possibly Sieglinde. But definitely not Fricka. Loki might be okay for a male, but unfortunately the Norse god Loki was rather sly and sneaky. Thor, the god of thunder, is good, if you don't mind a single syllable. Then there are the names of the famous reindeer, Dancer, Prancer, Donder und Blitzen. I very much doubt that you want to name a dog Prometheus, much less Epimetheus. Procrustes is definitely out.

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.
But of all the brave men in the world, there's none that can compare.
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the British Grenadiers.

My personal goddess is Buffy. Probably not too good for a dog, although there's a rather nice humane-law enforcement officer of that name on Animal Planet on TV. My sister's three big dogs are named Nina, Sparky and Annie. Not helpful, I know.

I just checked in to see if there was an update.

Re names, if you have girls needing a name, you might consider Bodacia. She was a real person but many of the stories about her are of mythical proportions. She was a tribal warrior queen (of what is now Ireland) who sacked and destroyed London (Londinum) circa 1000 AD. This during the Roman Empire's brutal attempts to gain control of the British Isles. There is a statute of her in London. Some think that the word "bodacious" came from stories about the fearless queen. I've heard the name pronounced (Bodaykia), (Bodaysheea) and (Bodayseea).

Re removal of voice box When I lived in OR I did the dog show thing for a couple of years. During that time I met a breeder from a bordering state and visited her kennel. She had the voice boxes removed from all of her dogs except those she was showing, pups for sale or pups she hoped would be show quality. I was horrified. Later I learned that she was "kicked out" of the Scottish Terrier club for fraudulent dealings, and that prior she had been kicked out of the Doxie Club. She had changed her name and dogs of choice; more correctly, dogs of abuse. "Barking annoys me." was her explanation.

Hi maryhaze :happy0207:

No one else has asked this, so I assume I'm about to ask a silly question.

Why do you need to rename the doggies?

sometimes these guys come from such crappy circumstances that they need a whole new start. & sometimes the names are just stupid or annoy me. i've had a himmler, el duce & black boy for starters. those annoy me, bigtime. december & a rottie who bit a shelter volunteer in the face & was named tiny are stupid. himmler became angus, el duce became dante & tiny became othello. don't remember what i changed the others to. actually, a lot of people ask me that & dogs usually respond to name changes pretty quickly, especially if they weren't real close with their owners.

Oh god, SaberGal, how terrible. I have a beagle, and I love how much he "talks" and how he occassionally will throw his head back and bay at the moon. It's such a beautiful sound. I can't imagine the kind of person who who would have a dog's voice box removed, nor can I imagine the kind of vet who would do it.

Why not the name Apollo...the Greek god of light? Just seems appropriate because the poor critter will finally see the light (the kindness of others).

Thanks for the explanation, maryhaze.

I found this link for you: http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/gre-anci.php

It's a list of Greek names and the meaning of the name.
Maybe it will be helpful.

I like this one:

AKAKIOS

Gender: Masculine

Usage: Greek, Ancient Greek

Other Scripts: Ακακιος (Ancient Greek)
Means "innocent, not evil" from Greek α, a negative prefix, combined with κακη (kake) "evil". This was the name of three early saints, two of whom were martyred.

Do you remember Magnum, P.I.? Of course you do. So you remember Zeus and Apollo, two Rotties, I think. (Could be wrong.) Personally, I would be glad to name a dog Anaxagoras, but I don't think it would be the most useful name for MaryHaze. (The makers of the list did not mention that Anaxagoras was an important Greek philosopher.)

My vet, not surprisingly, requires a distinctive name for every pet that it treats. I called my latest feline acquisition (brought home as a surprise by DW) Maximilian. We didn't know its sex, for sure, but we could call it either Max or Maxine, as required. Turned out to be neutered male, and turned out that the vet clinic's staff recorded its name as Max, preferring not to spell out Maximilian. They also recorded the color of one of our cats as tortis shell. (Its color was tortoise-shell.) See my essay on a different thread concerning dyslexia.

I love my dogs barks too! My female actually has different barks and sounds for different things and I think that's just the coolest.

So glad to hear the dog made it, Mary, and is adjusting well!
