NEW HAVEN — Yale University police Wednesday put out a missing person’s bulletin for a young pharmacology graduate student who left all her identification behind and has not been seen or heard from by family and friends.

Annie Le, 24, who was just beginning her third year as a doctoral student in pharmacology student, was last seen on Tuesday at her laboratory at 10 Amistad St. in the university’s medical area.

A leaflet put out by police said Le left her purse, which contained her cell pone, credit cards and money in her office Tuesday morning.

She was last seen wearing a knee length brown skirt, bright green short sleeved T-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace. They said she does not have access to a vehicle and there are no apparent medical issues that would explain her disappearance.

Le is about 4 feet, 11 inches tall, has straight brown should length hair, brown eyes, weighs 90 pounds and is of Asian ethnicity.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Yale Police Department at 432-4400.

Graduate student reported missing

Published Wednesday, September 9, 2009

A 24-year-old graduate student at the Yale School of Medicine has been missing for more than 24 hours, and the Yale Police Department is asking for help in finding her.

The Yale Police Department says Annie Le MED ’13, of Placerville, Calif., has not been seen or heard from since Tuesday morning. Yale Deputy University Secretary Martha Highsmith said there is no evidence to suggest foul play but declined to elaborate further, saying she would not comment on an ongoing investigation.

A surveillance photograph distributed by the Yale Police Department shows Le entering the University-owned research facility at 10 Amistad St. on Tuesday morning. She has not been seen or heard from since, according to the YPD.

http://media.yaledailynews.com/media/cache/images/2009/09/09/picture%2013_png_200x1000_q85.jpg

She is described as a 4’11” Asian female with straight brown shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. Le was last seen wearing a knee-length brown skirt, a bright green short-sleeved T-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace, the YPD said. She does not have access to a car.

Le started her Tuesday morning working in the Sterling Hall of Medicine, where her lab was located, Yale Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said. Le left the lab around 10 a.m. to walk to the 10 Amistad St. three blocks away, where she frequently went to conduct experiments, Lorimer said.

Le, who according to her Facebook page is scheduled to be married on Sunday, left her purse containing her cell phone, credit cards and money in her office in SHM, Lorimer said. She brought her Yale ID card with her, Lorimer said, in order to gain access to 10 Amistad St.

School of Medicine Dean Robert Alpern said he was notified about Le’s disappearance late yesterday afternoon, just before the department of pharmacology met and was briefed on the on-going investigation.

“The biggest thing we’re worried about right now is ‘is she okay?’” he said.

Alpern added that her disappearance raises a number of concerns including, but not limited to, whether the medical school is taking enough measures to ensure the safety of its students. Still, he cautioned that until administrators know what happened to Le, it is difficult to know what they should be concerned about.

Pharmacology Department chair Joseph Schlessinger said he first learned of Le’s disappearance from her faculty advisor Anton Bennett, an assistant professor in the pharmacology department. A 2007 graduate of the University of Rochester, Le is studying for a Ph.D. in pharmacology and molecular medicine.

Schlessinger said that Bennett e-mailed him yesterday around noon informing him that Le had not come in to work and that no one knew where she was. Police confiscated all of Le’s materials from the Anton Bennet Lab in the Sterling Hall Department of Pharmacology, where she worked.

“We know nothing. We are just concerned. We are like her parents,” he said.

The Yale Police have contacted the FBI for assistance in the search, FBI supervisory special agent Bill Reiner said.

Anyone with information on Le’s whereabouts is asked to contact the YPD at (203) 432-4400.

New Haven (WTNH) - The Yale University Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a Yale graduate student who went missing from New Haven on Tuesday, September 8th.

Annie Le, 24, has not been seen nor heard from by family, co-workers and friends. She is described as a 4'11" Asian-female with brown, shoulder length hair, brown eyes and weighs in at 90 lbs.

She was last seen wearing a knee-length brown skirt, a bright green short-sleeved t-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace.

"I found out when someone came into the office and asked if I had seen Annie, I said no," said co-worker Debbie Apuzzo.

That was more than 24-hours ago. A surveillance photo is the last time anybody has seen Le. She is a pharmacology student at Yale and was on her way to the lab on Amistad Street in New Haven.

Co-workers say she just vanished leaving behind all her belongs and her future husband.

"She left her pocketbook, cell phone in the lab; she didn't go home last night, she is getting married on Sunday, her fiancee hasn't heard from her," said Apuzzo. "So, everybody is pretty worried [and] pretty scared."

Friends say she's very hard working, reliable, respectable and has many achievements and accomplishments in her field.

"A lot of good friends and a wonderful fiance [that] she is going to marry on Sunday. We all love her a lot," student Tara Bancroft said.

"Energetic, always smiling, they loved her in the lab, great future ahead of her, and we are praying that she is going to pop up somewhere and we are not going to look at the worst here," said Apuzzo.

Anyone with information on Le's whereabouts is asked to contact the Yale Police Department at (203) 432-4400.

GRADUATE STUDENT GOES MISSING

According to the police, Annie Marie Le MED ’13 — whose wedding is supposed to take place on Sunday — has not been seen or heard from since Tuesday morning. Deputy University Secretary Martha Highsmith, who oversees campus security operations, said there is no evidence to suggest foul play in the disappearance but declined to elaborate further Wednesday evening, saying she would not comment on an ongoing investigation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Connecticut State Police are assisting the YPD in the search.

Police searched Annie Le’s last known location, 10 Amistad St., late last night, but they did not locate the doctoral student. The Yale Police Department is seeking information about Le’s whereabouts.

The Yale Police Department says Annie Le MED ’13, pictured above, has not been seen or heard from since Tuesday morning.A surveillance photograph distributed by the University shows Le, a native of Placerville, Calif., entering a Yale research facility at 10 Amistad St. on Tuesday morning. Officials say she has not been seen or heard from since.

Le, a 4-foot-11-inch Asian female who has shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes, was last seen wearing a knee-length brown skirt, a bright green short-sleeved T-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace. The police believe she does not have access to a car.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Rochester who is now studying for a doctorate in pharmacology and molecular medicine, Le started her Tuesday morning working in her lab at the Sterling Hall of Medicine, University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said. Le left the lab at some point that morning to walk the three blocks to the Amistad Street facility where she frequently works on experiments, Lorimer said. She brought her Yale identification card with her — records show that she swiped into the building at about 10 a.m — but left her purse, which contained her cell phone, credit cards and money, in her Sterling office, Lorimer said.

The search for Le on Wednesday was largely focused on the Amistad Street building, where she was last seen. Several dozen police and security officers searched the building and the connected parking garage late last night, but they did not find Le. The search took about an hour, though the police paused at times to obtain keys to certain remote areas of the building. People continued to enter and exit the facility as the search continued.

Several students and workers confirmed that there had been an unexpected fire alarm in the building at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, and the building was evacuated as a result. Although security cameras are stationed all around the building, Lorimer said the University has not been able to confirm that Le left the facility at any point after she entered it.
“We have been looking now at all of the tapes of every exit and entrance over the entire 24 hours, just to see if there’s any information we can give to the law enforcement agencies,” Lorimer said late Wednesday evening.

No e-mail was sent to the campus community to inform students and faculty of the disappearance. Le’s fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, a graduate student at Columbia University who attended Rochester with her, could not be reached for comment Wednesday, though NBC Connecticut reported that he was in New Haven helping with the search on Wednesday. Efforts to reach Le’s parents were also unsuccessful.

Le worked in the pharmacology lab of Anton Bennett, an associate professor of pharmacology. Police confiscated her belongings from that lab yesterday and were still examining her lab space Tuesday evening.

Bennett, for his part, said he was first contacted by police late Tuesday after Le’s roommate reported her missing.

He emphasized that his eight-person laboratory team, of which Le is a member, works closely together and, as such, her colleagues noticed her absence quickly.

“There was certainly immediate concern about her whereabouts,” Bennett said. “And they grew over the course of the day,” especially after she missed a pathology class for which she is a teaching assistant.

Bennett described his advisee as an extremely diligent and well-organized student. He added that she was always aware of her surroundings and took appropriate precautions when leaving the lab late at night. Colleagues interviewed universally described Le as a bundle of energy — an always upbeat and friendly individual, who, while petite, is readily recognizable by the clickety-clack of her high heels on the lab floors.

School of Medicine Dean Robert Alpern said he was notified about Le’s disappearance late yesterday afternoon, just before the Department of Pharmacology met and was briefed on the situation.

“The biggest thing we’re worried about right now is ‘Is she okay?’ ” he said.

Anyone with information on Le’s whereabouts is asked to contact the YPD at (203) 432-4400.

New Haven (WTNH) - Is it a case of a runaway bride, or something more sinister? The FBI have joined state and local police in a search for a Yale graduate student who vanished from the New Haven campus on Tuesday, September 8th.

News Channel 8's Erin Cox says FBI agents with a K-9 team entered 10 Amistad Street Thursday afternoon. Then, authorities began sifting through a garbage dumpster in the back of the building. Annie Le, 24, was last seen on a surveillance video entering that building and has not been heard from since. Yale Police were also there earlier in the day handing out flyers with Le's picture in a quest for more information.

The FBI also searched Le's apartment earlier in the day, but they did not answer any questions from News Channel 8 about the investigation.

"Law enforcement officers are continuing to undertake detailed searches of the surrounding area; and security officials are reviewing images from closed-circuit cameras in the area," Yale Chief of Police James Perrotti said in a statement.
Co-workers say she just vanished leaving behind all her belongings and her future husband, who she was to marry on Sunday.

"I found out when someone came into the office and asked if I had seen Annie, I said no," said co-worker Debbie Apuzzo. "She left her pocketbook, cell phone in the lab; she didn't go home last night. So, everybody is pretty worried [and] pretty scared."

The pharmacology student is from California and received her undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester.
Ironically, Le penned a crime and safety article for B Magazine (http://bbs.yale.edu/images/B10_1.pdf) , a Yale publication, in February.

Le is Asian with brown, shoulder length hair and brown eyes. She weighs 90 pounds and is 4'11". She was last seen wearing a knee-length brown skirt, a bright green short-sleeved t-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace entering her lab on Amistad Street.

Anyone with information on Le's whereabouts is asked to contact the Yale Police Department at (203) 432-4400.

Woman disappears before wedding

Yale student Annie Marie Le with Jon Widawsky, whom she was to marry Sunday and who had gone to New Haven to find her.

A brilliant Yale grad student mysteriously vanished just days before her Long Island wedding -- setting off a desperate search and sparking speculation about whether the petite stunner was the victim of foul play or is a runaway bride.

Annie Marie Le, 24, a doctoral student in pharmacology, disappeared on Tuesday sometime after security cameras spotted her entering a Yale research facility in New Haven, where she often conducts experiments.

The 4-foot-10, 90-pound Le -- whose wedding to Columbia University grad student Jon Widawsky was scheduled for Sunday -- had left behind her purse, cellphone, credit cards and cash in her office, located in another building three blocks away.

"They don't know where Annie is! I got to go!" Widawsky, 24, told his Manhattan roommate, Dory Kramer, after calling Le's roomie when she failed to respond to him online Tuesday night.

"He was on the next train to New Haven," Kramer said of Widawsky, a doctoral candidate in physics. "He was very distraught. He was worried. The timing is terribly cruel.

"She left her desk with nothing. Where is she going to go?" Kramer said, knocking down suggestions that Le disappeared willingly.

"You need a cellphone, your wallet. She's not impulsive. She's very goal-oriented, organized and planned."

Investigators yesterday used bloodhounds to search the Amistad Building, where Le was last seen.

Outside, FBI investigators scoured several large garbage bins for evidence, and also entered Le's New Haven apartment.

Electronic records reveal that Le, who is also specializing in molecular medicine, used her Yale ID card to swipe into the Amistad Building at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

At about 1 p.m., a fire alarm that was accidentally set off led to the building being evacuated.

Yale officials said a check of footage from security cameras has not shown Le leaving the building.

Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said "there's no evidence" of foul play "at this time."

But a friend and fellow student, Xiao Hung, told Fox 5 News that on a prior occasion near the building, Le "had been approached by other people and she managed to get in the car and escape from that incident."

University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer told the Yale Daily News that authorities spoke with Widawsky, who was back in New Haven after collecting some belongings from his Morningside Heights apartment on Wednesday.

Lorimer said "there's not a worry about" Widawsky being involved in her disappearance.

The Huntington, LI, native met Le, who was raised in Placerville, Calif., when they were undergraduates at the University of Rochester. They were to be wed at the North Ritz Club in Syosset.

"The idea that she's a runaway bride seems extremely unlikely," Kramer said. "She liked to talk about the wedding . . . She was really excited about the wedding."

Search continues for missing student

Published Friday, September 11, 2009

Investigators searched the dumpster behind 10 Amistad St., Annie Le’s MED ’13 last known location, on Thursday afternoon in search of clues regarding the missing graduate student’s whereabouts.

After a full day of work, authorities have no good news to report in the search for Annie Le MED ’13.

Investigators interviewed Le’s friends and colleagues Thursday and continued to search the research facility at 10 Amistad St. where she was last seen Tuesday morning. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation were seen entering her apartment at 188 Lawrence St. at about 1 p.m.; after two hours of searching, they removed a bag of items from the house. Still, University and law enforcement officials said there were no major developments yesterday and that they will continue searching Friday.

“We are responding to this at this point as if it could be any kind of bad situation,” University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said in an interview. “You don’t just not go home for a couple of days.”

The 24-year-old Le, who is studying for a doctorate in pharmacology and molecular medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, is scheduled to be married Sunday to Jonathan Widawsky, a graduate student at Columbia University who attended the University of Rochester with her. Lorimer said Thursday that Widawsky is cooperating with investigators and that “there’s not a worry about” his possible involvement in the disappearance.

Deputy Secretary Martha Highsmith said Le’s mother has also been helpful to the investigation, which is being led by the Yale Police Department with assistance from the FBI, Connecticut State Police and New Haven Police Department. Neither Widawsky nor Le’s parents have spoken publicly about Le’s disappearance.

Lorimer said officials continue to examine every frame of security tape footage from the Amistad Street building but have not yet found any evidence that Le left that facility after she entered at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. Cameras cover every exit of the building, Highsmith said.

While police said Le entered the facility wearing a lime green shirt, Highsmith said it is possible that she changed clothes or put on a white lab coat while in the building. If she did, investigators will have an even harder time identifying her in the footage.

A fire alarm that was sounded at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday is not thought to be related to her disappearance, Highsmith said. She added that a malfunctioning smoke detector caused the alarm and that investigators do not believe anyone tampered with the fire system.

Just outside the Amistad Street building on Thursday night, a team of investigators wearing yellow protective suits searched trash dumpsters for evidence related to the disappearance, though the search did not seem to reveal any information. Another team of investigators from the FBI searched inside the building Thursday, following a Wednesday night search by Yale police and security officers.

Bloodhounds from the Connecticut State Police were also on the scene for most of the day, though officers said they will have a more difficult time picking up scents of Le as time passes. One officer added that it may be impossible for the dogs to do their work after 72 hours have passed from the time when Le went missing.

Le’s roommate was the first to notify authorities of Le’s disappearance Tuesday night. Yale Police Chief James Perrotti said in an interview that the YPD began investigating between 9 and 10 p.m., immediately after they learned that Le was missing, and quickly learned that Le had left all her belongings in her Sterling Hall of Medicine office early Tuesday before she walked three blocks to the facility at 10 Amistad St. where she often conducted research. Police began interviewing friends and colleagues of Le late Tuesday and continued that work on Wednesday and Thursday.

The University did not, however, send an e-mail to the entire campus until 10:42 a.m. Thursday, though media outlets were informed of the disappearance on Wednesday afternoon. Perrotti said there was a delay in alerting the media and the community because the police “do get reports of missing persons, and most of the time, through our investigation, we are able to figure out where the person is.”

University President Richard Levin added in a telephone interview Thursday night that while Yale students have gone missing before, “fortunately it has in most cases turned out to be a student simply voluntarily leaving without giving notice to people. Every time it happens, we take it with the utmost seriousness.”

Electronic billboards across Interstates 91 and 95 will display a photo of Le in the coming days and will ask motorists with information to contact the FBI. As of Thursday, police said they still have no suspects and no evidence of foul play in her disappearance.

Anyone with information pertaining to Le’s disappearance is asked to call the FBI tip line at 1-877-503-1950.

Annie Le wrote about how to prevent becoming campus crime victim

Annie Le, the Yale graduate student who disappeared days before her planned wedding to a Long Island man, authored a student magazine story on how to avoid being a campus crime victim.

"Most students are all too familiar with e-mails with the subject: 'Message from Chief Perrotti' detailing the latest robbery," Le wrote in the February B Magazine story, titled "Crime and Safety in New Haven." She was referring to the James Perrotti, the Yale police chief who now leads the search for the missing 24-year-old researcher.

"What can one do to avoid becoming another unnamed victim in these e-mails?" Le wrote.

Yale sees far more serious crimes than other nearby schools such as Quinnipiac University and Southern Connecticut State University - which is further from New Haven's downtown, Le said.

Using thefts as an indicator, in 2006 Columbia University had about the same number of thefts - though Columbia's urban campus has a far larger student enrollment, she said. The University of Pennsylvania, also an urban campus, had only 53 thefts though it has twice Yale's enrollment, she said.

From Le's magazine article it is not possible to tell whether she is referring to larcenies, robberies, or both.

"Such numbers do not bode well for Yale," Le's article said. "According to CNN Money Magazine, the City of New Haven has 7 times as much personal crime compared to the average for 'safe' cities in the United States."

In spite of door-to-door escort and shuttle services, Le wrote, "the Yale community is still plagued with thefts, some involving frightening confrontations."

For the article Le interviewed the campus police chief to talk about crime, and he told her the department had increased its late-night patrols. Perrotti offered some tips for keeping safe: Pay attention to where you are. Don't act as if you are a potential victim. Do not be distracted by iPods and phone calls. And "reduce your exposure (use the Yale escort and shuttle services)... (and) walk with a purpose."

Chief Perrotti's final point was that "crime prevention is nothing more than recognizing a risk and taking steps to prevent it."

He added, "in short, New Haven is a city, and all cities have their perils, but with a little street smarts, one can avoid becoming yet another statistic."

Ok...the fire alarm has me puzzled. They say it was a false alarm. Did someone pull the alarm? Could it have been her in attempt to get help? Could it have been a perp to get the building scrambling? This alarm is a red flag for me. JMO

I just read elsewhere (don't have the link handy) that it was NOT a false alarm (someone just pulling it for a gag), but caused by faulty smoke detectors.

Professor questioned by police in case of missing Yale student Annie Le

Annie Le, a 24-year-old doctoral student in pharmacology, was supposed to attend the professor's class on Tuesday afternoon.

But the class was abruptly canceled - and hours later, Le was discovered missing.

The sudden cancellation near the time when Le is believed to have disappeared aroused suspicions among law enforcement, a New Haven police source said.

It was unclear what class was canceled or if the professor is a suspect. Yale officials would not comment, and a police spokesperson did not return calls.

Wedding canceled for Missing Yale Student

Was it cold feet or fowl play? Those questions have yet to be answered by friends and family of Annie Le, as FBI agents continue to comb the Yale Campus for clues.

The 24-year-old doctoral student was arranged to be married Sunday on Long Island. However, family members have since canceled the New York ceremony while the investigation into her disappearance continues.

Meanwhile... cops questioned a Yale Professor Friday, whose class Le was supposed to attend that afternoon, but was abruptly canceled in the moments prior to her disappearance.

No suspects have yet to be named in the case.

One of missing Yale grad student Annie Le's professors reportedly was questioned by cops after they learned he canceled a class the bride-to-be was due to attend the same day she mysteriously disappeared.

The prof called off the class Tuesday, well before anyone raised an alarm that Le had vanished -- just five days ahead of her scheduled Long Island wedding, Fox61-TV in Connecticut reported. The professor has not been charged.

Meanwhile, The Post has learned that Le's mom, Vivian, told a woman at a New Haven supermarket that her daughter's disappearance was "not cold feet," while handing out missing-person fliers Wednesday.

The somber mom also told the woman that "it's not the boyfriend" -- Columbia University physics grad student Jonathan Widawsky -- who's to blame for Le going missing.

More than 100 Yale Police, FBI agents, state and city cops continued an intensive search for Le yesterday as Yale announced a $10,000 reward for information on her whereabouts. They checked the basement of the Amistad Street Building in New Haven where she last was seen entering Tuesday morning, reviewed building blueprints and examined the aspiring doctor's computer.

Investigators also are reviewing security-camera footage to see if she was spotted leaving.

Le was deeply in love with Widawsky and talked constantly about their wedding, which was scheduled to take place tomorrow in Syosset. Those nuptials were canceled yesterday.

"Less than one week til the big day!" Le, 24, wrote on her Facebook page last Sunday.

Her page also read, "Lucky I'm in love with my best friend :)," under a photo of her and Widawsky.

Le was "hellbent on getting married," her uncle Minh Nguyen told the Yale Daily News.

And Yale Pharmacology Department chair Joseph Schlessinger told the paper, "She was always talking about the wedding."

Le in February wrote an article titled "Crime and Safety in New Haven" in Yale's B Magazine.

She detailed safety tips from Yale Police Chief James Perrotti and concluded that "with a little street smarts, one can avoid becoming yet another statistic."

"She did not feel safe in New Haven," Schlessinger told the Yale Daily News.

ETA:

Pharmacology Department chair Joseph Schlessinger said he first learned of Le’s disappearance from her faculty advisor Anton Bennett, an assistant professor in the pharmacology department. A 2007 graduate of the University of Rochester, Le is studying for a Ph.D. in pharmacology and molecular medicine.

Schlessinger said that Bennett e-mailed him yesterday around noon informing him that Le had not come in to work and that no one knew where she was. Police confiscated all of Le’s materials from the Anton Bennet Lab in the Sterling Hall Department of Pharmacology, where she worked.

http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/city-news/2009/09/09/medical-student-goes-missing/

So Bennett was the first to realize that Annie Le was not at work around noon that day and he emailed the Pharmacology department chair. His office is in Sterling... not Armstad the building she was last seen entering. I wonder how he knew/who told him Annie wasn't there that day. Her belongings were in Sterling and she was there prior to 10AM? Maybe he came in later and just didn't see her.

Yale University Offering $10,000 Reward for Missing Student

Yale University has offered a $10,000 reward for information that might lead to a 24-year-old graduate student who has disappeared just days before she was due to get married.
Annie Le, a 24-year-old doctoral student in pharmacology, was last seen on Tuesday, outside a building at the Yale School of Medicine, where her laboratory is located. Since her disappearance not one person has heard from Ms Le, including her fiance Jonathan Widawsky, a graduate student at New York's Columbia University, to whom she is due to be married on Sunday.
As authorities in Connecticut, the state's third largest city New Haven is the home to Yale university, continue to review security camera footage, check the contents of Ms Le's computer and check the blueprints of the building at the School of Medicine for any clues as to what may have happened to the young woman, it has been confirmed that the student's cell phone, her credit cards and some money were found in a purse in her office.
CNN is reporting that authorities at Yale have asked the FBI to help with the investigation in to Ms Le's disappearance, with a spokesman for New Haven Police Department stating that his department is working with the university, but was unable to say for certain exactly how.
According to ABC News a spokesman for Yale has said that no evidence of foul play has emerged, whilst a woman who worked with Ms Le told a CNN affiliate that her colleague was "very excited" about her forthcoming marriage. The woman in question, Debbie Apuzzo, also provided CNN with the copy of a letter sent by Yale's Police Chief James Perrotti to everyone connected with the university. One part of the letter read:

The State Police have searched the area of Ms. Le's last known appearance with their bloodhounds; law enforcement officers are continuing to undertake detailed searches of the surrounding area; and security officials are reviewing images from closed-circuit cameras in the area

Ms Lee. originally from California, was reportedly wearing a knee-length brown skirt, a bright-green short-sleeved T-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace at the time she disappeared. She described as 4-foot-11-inches tall, is 90 pounds in weight and has brown hair down to her shoulders.
Anyone with information regarding the possible whereabouts of Ms Lee is encouraged to call the FBI Hotline at 1-877-503-1950.

MISSING STUDENT: CRIME SCENE FOUND IN BUILDING

Published: Saturday, September 12, 2009

NEW HAVEN — Bloody clothes and other evidence of a crime scene have been found inside the building where missing Yale University student Annie Le was last seen, police sources said Saturday.

The discovery may dash hopes that Le, whose wedding Sunday has been called off, would be found alive.

Police sources said the evidence was discovered in a ceiling at the Yale building at 10 Amistad St. where surveillance footage shows Le entering Tuesday morning. She has not been seen since. The building houses the university’s molecular biology labs.

Police, using bloodhounds, have been searching the building since earlier this week.

Yale Friday offered a $10,000 reward for information, as family and friends remained in limbo about her whereabouts. Le, 24, is a doctoral candidate in pharmacology and molecular medicine.

A team of about 100 law enforcement agents from Yale University, the FBI, state police and New Haven officers, have been working on the case around the clock, according to Yale spokesman Tom Conroy.

As part of that, the FBI went to Yale-New Haven Hospital Friday night to review its security camera videos, according to sources.

Yale officials said Le’s fiance, Columbia University graduate student Jonathan Widawsky, 24, has been cooperating, as have Le’s friends and colleagues at Yale, and her family. officials said said there is no reason to consider Widawsky a person of interest in the case. The Yale official said police had also not uncovered any threats or problems involving Le’s family.

Yale officials said a check of Le’s computer and cell phone failed to turn up anything to explain her disappearance. Le left her purse, money, credit cards and cell phone at her office at 333 Cedar St. before walking three blocks to 10 Amistad St.

On Saturday, Yale officials said media reports of one of Le’s professors being questioned in the case is misleading, since anyone she has contact with has been questioned.

Anyone with information on Le is asked to call the FBI hotline at (877) 503-1950, which is answered 24 hours a day. The FBI has also put out the message about Le on electronic billboards on Interstates 91 and 95.

Bloody clothing has been found in ceiling tiles at 10 Amistad Street, the Yale building where Annie Le was last seen, law enforcement sources tell News Channel 8.

The sources tell News Channel 8's Erin Cox the area where the items were found is now considered a crime scene.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis told News Channel 8 no body has been found.

Around 12:15 p.m., New Haven State's Attorney Michael Dearington was photographed leaving the building at 10 Amistad St. with New Haven Assistant Chief Peter Reichard.

A Yale University spokesperson said a statement would be released "sometime today".

Investigators outside the lab where Le worked drove away from the scene with a man they were questioning, the Associated Press reported. Two agents were seen questioning the man just before 10:30 a.m. When they finished talking, the man got in the front seat of the unmarked car and one of the agents got in the back seat. The car then drove away.

Le, a doctoral student from Placerville, Calif., was last seen Tuesday at the Yale Medical School complex, less than a mile from the main campus. She was planning to be married Sunday on Long Island.

An agent said the FBI wouldn't answer any questions about the investigation while it's ongoing.

Investigators found bloody clothes stuffed in the ceiling where missing Yale graduate student Annie Le was last seen Athorities emptied the building at 10 Amistad St. in New Haven Saturday afternoon and declared it a crime scene.

Police sources told a local New Haven television news channel that Le's body was also found in the building.

The building houses the university's molecular biology labs. Investigators questioned a man outside her lab Saturday morning - then put him in an unmarked car with an FBI agent and drove away.

Officials would not say whether the man was a suspect or a witness.

Le, a 24-year-old doctoral student in pharmacology, was last seen around 10 a.m. Tuesday at the lab on the Yale Medical School complex, about a mile from the main campus.

"[The case] is still wide open," a law enforcement source told the Daily News. "We are looking into everything."

The source said investigators are looking at:

* A burglary gone bad - the lab where Le was last seen is full of valuable equipment.

* Kidnapping - Le's mother owns nail salons in California and has access to cash.

* A professor who suddenly canceled a class Le was to attend around the time she went missing.

Investigators are still searching through hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and following up on tips.

Yale announced Friday a $10,000 reward for information that leads them to Le. "They are going frame by frame, looking at every image," said Yale spokesman Tom Conroy.

"We are also reviewing footage of nearby businesses. We have yet to I.D. her leaving the building," he said. "The FBI is continuing to do interviews with everyone who knew the student."

Investigators also examined blueprints of the building to make sure nothing was missed in their search.

Le graduated from the University of Rochester in 2007, where she received a degree in bioscience and met her fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, who she was set to marry today in Syosset.

Police say Widawsky, a Columbia University graduate student, is not a suspect and is assisting with the investigation.

"There is still no evidence of foul play," Conroy said. "We are asking anyone who has information, even if they think it isn't significant, to please come forward."

Since it seems to have happened inside the lab, I'm not so sure the crime was all that random or the perp wasn't someone she knew. That almost makes it worse since she could've felt safe around this person. MOO

I don't think they'd have even had the PC if a body was found and the family not notified, though. They would wait until after the notification. Also, I don't think they would literally lie, and say a body was NOT found, when it was found.

Professor questioned by police in case of missing Yale student Annie Le

Investigators found bloody clothes stuffed in the ceiling where missing Yale graduate student Annie Le was last seen Athorities emptied the building at 10 Amistad St. in New Haven Saturday afternoon and declared it a crime scene.

Officials speaking in an evening news briefing denied earlier reports that Le's body had also been found in the building.

The building under investigation houses the university's molecular biology labs.

"We have yet to I.D. her leaving the building," he said. "The FBI is continuing to do interviews with everyone who knew the student."

Investigators also examined blueprints of the building to make sure nothing was missed in their search. Le graduated from the University of Rochester in 2007, where she received a degree in bioscience and met her fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, who she was set to marry Sunday in Syosset.

Police say Widawsky, a Columbia University graduate student, is not a suspect and is assisting with the investigation.

"There is still no evidence of foul play," Conroy said. "We are asking anyone who has information, even if they think it isn't significant, to please come forward."

Police Said to Find Bloody Clothing Where Missing Yale Student Was Last Seen

One day after Yale University offered a $10,000 reward for information about a graduate student who has been missing since Tuesday, the Yale Daily News, citing an anonymous source, is reporting this afternoon that the police have found bloody clothing hidden in the campus building where the missing student was last seen. It is not clear, however, if the bloody clothing, which was found in a ceiling, has anything to do with the case. The 24-year-old student, Annie Le, was scheduled to be married on Sunday, but the wedding has been canceled.

Authorities seize items in student's disappearance

Authorities say they have seized items in the disappearance of a Yale University graduate student who went missing days before her wedding.

FBI spokeswoman Kim Mertz said at a news conference Saturday afternoon that items that could be evidence are being analyzed but that none have yet been associated with Le.

Le was last seen Tuesday at a university laboratory. She swiped her identification card to enter the building Tuesday morning, but authorities have found no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex. Le was from Placerville, Calif. She was set to get married Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on the north shore of Long Island.

Yale had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to Le's whereabouts.

I can understand LE saying what they have about the items (clothing?) found in the building today since it hasn't been analyzed. It could be her clothing, the perp's or totally unrelated. The mystery still remains though that Annie entered the building and was never seen leaving. So she has to still be in there somewhere, imo. And, all her personal items were left behind at another address so if she ran away, what does she have with her? :girl_sad:

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Police scouring Yale University for traces of the bride-to-be that went missing this week today found bloody clothes hidden behind ceiling tiles in the building where she was last seen, according to several reports.

The New Haven Register newspaper is reporting that the clothes were found at 10 Amistad St. where 24-year-old doctoral student Annie Le was last seen Tuesday morning.

Le disappeared without a trace less than a week before she was to marry her fiancee, Columbia University physics grad student Jonathan Widawsky. The wedding, which had been planned for tomorrow, has been canceled.

The FBI special agent in charge of the investigation would only say that some items that could "potentially" be evidence, and that they aren't sure that she left the building where she was last seen.

Security records show Le swiped her identification card to enter the building about 10 a.m. Tuesday but there is no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex.

More than 100 Yale police, FBI agents and local cops have been combing the campus for clues ever since she was reported missing. Authorities have also put up a $10,000 reward for information.

Police wouldn't confirm details to either the paper or a local television station, but would only say that no body had been found.

Police have not named a suspect, but sources told Fox61-TV in Connecticut that Le's professor called off her class the same day she went missing and has been questioned by cops in the case. A university official said this morning that the unnamed professor is not considered involved in her disappearance, and that authorities were interviewing many people.

I think so too sunstar. LE said there are 75 cameras which surround that area. Interestingly enough, LE also said cameras show Annie entering the building. They haven't found video tape that shows her leaving. With bloody clothes being hidden, I wonder if she was hidden too?
I'm wondering if someone didn't want to cause a stir since Annie wrote the campus safety article for the school newpaper. Makes her disapperance seem intentional.

Well, LE now has blueprints of the building looking for any hidden spaces Annie could be in. Also the bloodhounds could detect something, imo. It doesn't seem like Annie was intending to be in the building all that long since her cell phone, etc. was left behind at another location. So I guess the big question is how many people were in the building that morning and who else knew she was going to be? MOO

I understood LE needed blueprints because it's such a huge building and it's possible she could be hidden almost anywhere in there. I don't think she made it out alive either. The biggest question it seems is who was in the lab when she was and how well they knew all the hiding places in the building. NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Potential evidence has been seized from the building where a Yale Universityhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32810822/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/#) graduate student was last seen before she vanished days ahead of her wedding, authorities said Saturday.

A police source told NBC News that investigators had recovered bloody clothes from a laboratory building in which Le was last seen on Tuesday. The New Haven Register and the Yale Daily News reported on their Web sites that the clothes were found in a ceiling space.

Items that could be evidence are being analyzed but none has yet been associated with Annie Le, FBIhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32810822/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/#) spokeswoman Kim Mertz said at a news conference.

"I will categorically say a body has not been found," Mertz said. "Items that could potentially be evidence have been seized. None have yet been associated with Annie Le at this time."

Mertz would not confirm reports that the items found included bloody clothing.

75 surveillance cameras
Le was last seen Tuesday at a university laboratory. She swiped her identification card to enter the building Tuesday morning, but authorities have found no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex.

Authorities said they still have not determined whether Le's disappearance is a criminal case.

"We don't know where she is. We don't know what happened to her," Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said. "We don't know if a crime was committed or not."

Investigators, having already gone through the videos once, continued to review the surveillance tapeshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32810822/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/#) frame-by-frame Saturday to see if they overlooked Le, who could have changed into a laboratory coat or other clothes before leaving the building. Mertz said the review included video enhancement being conducted by state police.

"I do not know that it's definitive that she has left the building at this point," Mertz said.

On Saturday, investigators took what appeared to be blueprints to the building. FBI agents were also spotted questioning a man outside the lab. When they finished talking, the man got in the front seat of the unmarked car and an FBI agent got in the back seat. The car then drove away.

Wedding canceled
Yale is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Le's whereabouts.

Le, who's of Asian descent, stands 4-foot-11 and weighs 90 pounds. Her purse, cell phone, credit cards and money were found in her office.
Officials say there's no evidence of foul play.

Le, originally from Placerville, Calif., was set to get married Sunday at the North Ritz Club in Syosset, N.Y., on the north shore of Long Island. Workers at the club say the wedding was canceled Friday.

Police say Le's fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, a Columbia University graduate student, is not a suspect and is assisting with the investigation.

FBI, state police search Hartford landfill for missing Yale student

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Federal authorities and state police canine teams are searching a landfill in Hartford this morning for missing Yale graduate student Annie Le, who hasn't been seen since Tuesday.

State police canine units from across Connecticut and the FBI are combing through the landfill after receiving information that Le may have been buried there.

Le, 24, is a Yale Medical School student who was last seen on video entering a research building on Amistad Street in the Yale Medical School complex on Tuesday. She was supposed to be married today on Long Island, but the wedding has been called off.

If Annie was harmed at the lab and was taken from the building she would have had to be placed in a container, IMO. However, IF that happened and the supposed bloody clothes or bloody anything are related to her, why wouldn't the person/s involved take the items with them along with Annie.

That doesn't make sense to me.

Wedding Bells Silenced As Search For Le Continues

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale graduate student Annie Le remained missing Sunday, the day she had planned to wed fiance, Jonathan Widawsky.

The couple had planned to wed at the the North Ritz Club in Syosset, N.Y., on the north shore of Long Island. Workers at the club say the wedding was canceled Friday.

Le, a graduate student at the Yale School of Medicine, was last seen entering a campus building on surveillance camera, but FBI officials said they have not determined whether she ever left the building.

Police said they believe Le left the Sterling Hall of Medicine where she had an office before 10 a.m. Tuesday. They said there are records of her swiping her card to get into a lab on Amistad Street, where she was captured by some of the more than 70 area surveillance cameras. They said she hasn't been seen or heard from since.

University police said Le's purse, containing her cell phone, credit cards and money, was left in her office.

She was scheduled to be married on Sunday.

At a joint press conference between Yale officials and members of the FBI, state and New Haven police on Saturday, police said items connected to the investigation into Le’s disappearance had been seized. They said testing was being performed to determine whether the evidence was connected to Le.

Police said Saturday that no body had been found, and that police were unsure whether Le’s disappearance was a missing person’s case or criminal in nature.

"We don't know where she is. We don't know what happened to her," Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said. "We don't know if a crime was committed or not."

Police said Le's fiance, a Columbia graduate student, is assisting in the investigation and is not considered a suspect.

Yale is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Le's whereabouts. Anyone with information regarding her disappearance is urged to call an anonymous tip line set up in the case by dialing 1-877-503-1950.

Bloody clothes found in ceiling of building where Annie Le last seen, source says
Authorities say they do not know where she is or what happened to her
Items that may be potential evidence being tested, FBI agent says
The Yale University graduate student was to be married on Sunday

CNN
(CNN) -- The FBI says it is examining materials that have been discovered that may be linked to missing Yale graduate student Annie Le.

A law enforcement source close to the investigation tells CNN bloody clothes are among the potential evidence being tested to see whether the blood is Le's.

The source added the clothes were found hidden in ceiling tiles in the medical research building where Le was last seen Tuesday.

"All I can say is items that could potentially be evidence have been seized. None have yet been associated with Annie Le," New Haven's FBI Agent in Charge Kim Mertz said Saturday at a news conference.

Mertz added that the items are being tested in more than one laboratory, but declined to say where.

Le, 24, was to be married Sunday in Long Island, New York. Her fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, is a graduate student at Columbia University in New York.

It is not uncommon for the FBI to help local police departments by using its laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. The Connecticut State Police also has a forensics lab in Meriden.

"We are not in a position today to conclude whether this is a missing person's case or whether criminality is involved," Mertz told reporters.

Yale University officials said at least 100 agents with the FBI, New Haven police and Connecticut State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Le was last seen on a Yale security camera entering a medical research building at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Investigators say they have spoken with students and others in the building who confirm she was there.

Authorities have not found images of her leaving the building. The FBI says investigators are reviewing the video "frame by frame."

Yale Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said Saturday there is "no reason to believe" that Le may have run away.

UPDATE: Bloody clothes not items Le was last seen wearing
Sunday, September 13, 2009

By William Kaempffer, Register Staff

NEW HAVEN - The blood-stained clothes found in ceiling tiles at the Yale University laboratory where graduate student Annie Le disappeared are not the clothes Le was last seen wearing, law enforcement officials said.

The items were sent for testing to see if the clothes had any connection to Le, whose disappearance five days before her wedding has attracted national media attention.

Investigators said a small amount of blood was found on the clothing found Saturday at 10 Amistad St.

Le is the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants and her mother is said to own several nail salons in California. Sources said Le was primarily raised by an aunt and uncle.

Annie Le Case: It’s A Homicide

Police found what they believe is the body of missing Yale med student Annie Le, ending a five-day manhunt that transfixed the nation.

New Haven police made the announcement at a press conference at 1 Union Ave. at 9 p.m. Sunday.

The body was found shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday at 10 Amistad St., the lab building where Le was last seen five days ago, said Assistant Chief Pete Reichard. Police found the remains of a human body secreted inside a wall in the building. Police have not positively identified the body as Annie Le, but they’re “assuming” it is her, and have ruled the case a homicide, Reichard said.

Now that the case has been classified a homicide, it has been transferred to the jurisdiction of the New Haven police. Reichard presided at the press conference in the absence of Chief James Lewis, who has been in Wisconsin for the weekend but has kept up with developments by the half hour. Officials from the FBI and state police also appeared at the press conference. Yale officials are planning a separate press conference later tonight.

New Haven police will work alongside other law officials to crack the case. They did not release further details Sunday, because the case is under investigation.

Le, a 24 year-old third-year Yale pharmacology graduate student, went missing on Tuesday. She was last seen at a Yale medical building on Amistad Street where she did lab experiments. More than 100 law enforcement agents descended on the city to try to solve the mystery.

Did she drop out of sight to avoid her upcoming wedding, which was planned for Sunday?

At first that was a working theory. It dissolved as the week went by — as her fiancé, friends, and family reported her excitement about the wedding; as security camera tapes revealed no trace of Le leaving the Yale medical lab building she had entered at 10 a.m. Tuesday; as bloody clothing was found in a ceiling at the building at 10 Amistad St.

FBI and Yale officials still said at a Saturday press conference that they weren’t sure yet whether they had a missing persons case or a grisly crime on their hands. But all signs were pointing to the latter.

By Sunday, the search for clues led to an incinerator in Hartford.

Le herself was apprehensive about crime in New Haven. She wrote an article this past February for a medical campus magazine in which she interviewed Yale Police Chief Jim Perrotti about ways students could keep safe and avoid becoming another “unnamed victim.”

Body found in wall at 10 Amistad St.

Published : Sunday, 13 Sep 2009, 8:51 PM EDT

Hartford (WTNH) - New Haven police say a body, assumed to be that of missing Yale grad student Annie Le, was found in a wall at a Yale medical building.

Le, 24, was last seen at 10 Amistad St. this past Tuesday. She was to be married today on Long Island.

At a Sunday night news conference, police announced the discovery of the body and said New Haven Police would be taking over the case as a homicide investigation.

Few details were released by police.

The announcement about the discovery of a body follows two other developments in the case earlier Sunday.

The FBI, state police and canine units spent the day sifting through debris at a Hartford trash facility in connection with Le's disappearance.

Also, published reports indicated bloody clothing found at 10 Amistad St. were not the clothes Le was wearing when she disappeared.

The search was conducted at the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority facility near Brainard Airport. A News Channel 8 photographer on the scene watched as a piece of equipment extracted piles of trash, and workers, some dressed in hazardous materials suits, used rakes to separate the pieces. State police dogs also sniffed the sorted trash.

The CRAA operates trash-to-energy and recycling facilities in Hartford.

According to the New Haven Register, the clothes, which were found above ceiling tiles in the building, had not been linked to Le as of the afternoon.

The Yale Daily News cited a police source who said the blood on the items could be either human or animal blood.

Le was a graduate student in pharmacology at the university.

Yale university is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Le's whereabouts.

Police: Body found inside Yale lab building

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Police in Connecticut say a body has been found in a building where a Yale University graduate student vanished.

New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard says the body has not been identified as doctoral student Annie Le, who has been the focus of a massive police search since she vanished in the building on Tuesday.

Le swiped her identification card to enter the building that morning, but there was no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex. Investigators pored over blueprints and surveillance video footage while searching for her.

Le was from Placerville, Calif. She was set to get married Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

"Shortly after 5 p.m. this evening, Connecticut State Police located the remains of a human secreted in a wall inside a building located at 10 Amistad [St.]," said New Haven Police Assistant Chief Peter Reichard.

"She hasn’t been positively ID’d, but we’re assuming it’s [Le]," Reichard said. "We contacted members of Le’s family. Our sympathies go out to the family."

Reichard revealed that a university student has failed a lie-detector test when questioned about the missing young woman but refused to provide details, including whether he was the same young man who had been led from the building for questioning early Saturday.

"We can’t release any more information at this time," Reichard said.

The developments came hours after authorities had spent the afternoon scouring a trash dump at an incineration plant 40 miles north of the New Haven campus, where refuse from the lab is occasionally taken.

A special team of FBI probers joined the state police at the Hartford site — the same day Le had been scheduled to marry a Columbia grad student on Long Island. Search dogs were heard barking inside the compound.

"They asked if they could come in and work around, and we did everything to accommodate them," said Paul Nonnenmacher, a spokesman for the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority, which runs the plant.

FBI Special Agent Bill Reiner said only that investigators were "following the trash" generated by the lab where Le, a doctoral student, was last seen Tuesday.

New Haven Deputy Police Chief Pete Reichard told the New Haven Independent that the search was just "routine."

"There was no tip coming in, in any way," Reichard told the paper.

Nonnenmacher said garbage from New Haven only occasionally ends up at the Hartford plant.

Uncut Video- Police Say Human Remains Found In Yale Lab

http://www.wfsb.com/index.html

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Human remains, tentatively identified as belonging to missing graduate student Annie Le, were found inside a wall in a Yale University laboratory, police said.

The remains were discovered by members of Connecticut State Police at 10 Amistad St. just after 5 p.m. Sunday, the day Le was scheduled to be married.

“She hasn’t been positively identified at this time, however we’re assuming that it is her at this time,” New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard said.

Police said the investigation into Le’s disappearance has moved from being a missing person’s case to a homicide investigation. Reichard said the New Haven Police Department has assumed the lead role in the homicide investigation.

“Detectives and investigators right now have a large amount of physical evidence at the scene that we’re going through to determine if it’s linked to this case or not,” Reichard said.

More than 100 law enforcement agents had been searching for Le, a graduate student at the Yale School of Medicine, since Tuesday.

Le was last seen entering a building on Amistad Street on surveillance camera. Police said they believe Le left the Sterling Hall of Medicine where she had an office before 10 a.m. Tuesday. They said there were records of her swiping her card to get into the Amistad Street lab, where she was captured by surveillance cameras entering, but never leaving.

Le and fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, had planned to wed at the the North Ritz Club in Syosset, N.Y., on the north shore of Long Island. Police said Saturday that Widawsky, a Columbia graduate student, was assisting in the investigation and was not considered a suspect.

Le received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester in New York and majored in cell and developmental biology with a minor in medical anthropology. She conducted a summer project at the National Institutes of Health on bone tissue engineering using mouse mesenchymal stem cells, according to a biography posted on the NIH Web site. While at the University of Rochester, she conducted research involving parasitic wasps.

She is originally from California, and graduated from Union Mine High School in 2003, where she was named "Best of the Best," and "Most Likely To Be The Next Einstein."

Police: Body believed to be Le found in building
Remains have not been positively identified in what is now a homicide case

updated 1 hour, 18 minutes ago

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Police in Connecticut on Sunday said they found what they believe is the body of a Yale University graduate student and bride-to-be hidden inside the wall of a university building where she was last seen five days before.

New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard said officials presumed the body was that of doctoral student Annie Le, although they had not yet positively identified it. Le has been the focus of a massive police search since Tuesday.

Le, 24, of Placerville, Calif., was to be married Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore. New Haven police said they have contacted her family and have assumed control of the investigation, which is now being treated as a homicide.

State police found the body at around 5 p.m. Sunday in an area of the building that houses utility cables that run between floors.

Le was last seen Tuesday morning in the building. Surveillance video shows her arriving around 10 a.m., but police had been baffled since the investigation began because there was no video of Le leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras operating around the complex. Her ID, money, credit cards and purse were found in her office.

More than 100 local, state and federal police had been searching the building for days, using blueprints to uncover any place where evidence or Le's body could be hidden.

A police source told NBC News earlier on Sunday that investigators had recovered bloody clothes from a laboratory building. The New Haven Register and the Yale Daily News reported on their Web sites that the clothes were found in a ceiling space. The official spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity so the official would be free to discuss an ongoing investigation.

On Sunday morning, a state police Major Crimes Squad van drove down a ramp into the basement area of the building where the lab is located. Officials had no immediate comment.

On Sunday, students prayed for Le's safe return at The University Church.

"It has been a week that has tested many people in many different ways," the Rev. Ian Buckner Oliver said just before he gave the Sunday morning sermon. "It has brought up a lot of fears for people. It has brought up a lot of worry and concern for her and for all our safety."

The student-dominated congregation offered a moment of silence and prayer, "for Annie, and her family, who have arrived here in New Haven, for her fiance, on this, what would have been their wedding day. Let's lift them up in our prayers," Oliver said.

Le's family arrived in New Haven on Saturday, Oliver said after the service. He said the church doesn't have any other events or prayer services planned specifically for Le.

"There is nothing else at this point because the university and police have said there is no criminal investigation, there is no proof of a crime. So at this point, we are just praying," Oliver said.

Le, who's of Asian descent, stands 4 feet 11 inches and weighs 90 pounds. She was to marry Columbia University graduate student Jonathan Widawsky on Sunday at the North Ritz Club in Syosset, N.Y., on the north shore of Long Island.

Police say Widawsky is not a suspect and is assisting with the investigation.

Evidence in Murder of Yale Student Annie Le May Point to Suspect

A day after the body of a missing bride-to-be was believed to have been found stuffed into a basement wall of the Yale University laboratory where she was last seen, police may have a powerful piece of evidence.

Bloody clothes found in the lab belonged not to Annie Le, but to the likely killer, according to sources. Some law enforcement officials have speculated that police are already narrowing on a suspect -- there is no obvious manhunt for her killer, no warnings to area residents to be on the look out.

But for friends and family who had insisted for days that Le was not the kind to run out on her fiance, the news that police had found a body was devastating. Le was to be married Sunday.

Vanessa Flores, Le's former roommate, said she heard the news on the Internet about her friend's body likely being found.

"I had a very tough time just reading the headline," she told "Good Morning America" today. "It was very difficult."

Le, 24, disappeared Tuesday. She was seen entering the Amistad Street lab around 10 a.m., but none of the cameras caught her leaving. The body was found shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, shoved into a space in the wall meant to conceal pipes and wiring.

"We did locate the remains of a human. ... We are assuming that it is her at this time," New Haven assistant police chief Peter Reichard told reporters in a brief news conference Sunday.

Flores said she doesn't know why anyone would want to kill her friend, who earlier this year had penned a piece for the University Magazine questioning the safety of the New Haven campus.

"The only thing I can possibly think of right now is maybe a psychopath, an anti-social person who, I don't know, maybe got upset about what she wrote back in February about not being safe," she said.

Wedding gifts had been left outside the family home of Le's fiance Jonathan Widawsky. Their impending nuptials had led some to believe that Le had gotten cold feet and fled.

But Flores said Widawsky was "perfect" for Le.

He's just so wonderful to her. John was so supportive of her, of her dreams," Flores said. "They would talk on the cell phone for hours and they would just be so connected."

The discovery of the body ends a massive search by state and federal authorities that had expanded to a Connecticut waste-processing facility in Hartford, in addition to the Yale lab, in the hopes of finding clues to her mysterious disappearance.

Using cadaver-sniffing dogs in round-the-clock shifts, FBI agents and state troopers dressed in hazardous-material suits began searching the facility in Hartford Saturday night.

Police scanned blueprints of the lab and brought in blood-sniffing dogs, paying particular attention to the building's basement.

Yale had also offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to Le's whereabouts.

Vigil Planned At Yale For Annie Le

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale University officials are planning a candlelight prayer vigil for a graduate student Annie Le after her body was presumably found hidden inside the wall of a university laboratory building.

The vigil was scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday on Cross Campus at the Ivy League university.

More than 100 law enforcement agents had been searching for Le, a graduate student at the Yale School of Medicine, for days. She was last seen Tuesday entering the lab on Amistad Street.

Members of the state police found Le's body Sunday, her would-be wedding day.

If they don't run first...

That was my thought when I heard about Annie writting this paper on safety...

Also the person who called into HLN about asking if they checked the ceiling tiles...did they ask due to that woman Eridania being found in the ceiling duct in Manhattan, or did they ask because they knew....That also made me wonder...

Hope they find the perp really quick. They shouldn't be walking around, no one is safe until he/she (I don't want to discriminate) is found...:45024:

I kept thinking of the Rodriguez story and it just bothered me that it does always seem as when a particular murder happens you get copy cat stories. I mean the investigation must of caused a request of the blueprints but I thought it weird to request blue prints then a body is found behind a wall. Whole story is just sad and I always pray that the missing are found but it never sounds good when cellular phones are not used and bank accounts go untouched. I just hope they catch the killer.

Brother of Annie Le Says Goodbye on Facebook

NEW HAVEN, CT - Police in Connecticut on Sunday said they found what they believe is the body of a Yale University graduate student and bride-to-be hidden inside the wall of a university building where she was last seen five days before.

New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard said the body had not been identified as doctoral student and Placerville native Annie Le, who has been the focus of a massive police search since she vanished in the building on Tuesday.

VIDEO: New Haven Police News Conference; Body Found in Yale Building; 9/13/09, 6 p.m. (http://www.news10.net/video/default.aspx?aid=81841&storyid=66856)

While Le was not identified as the victim, Reichard said the missing persons case was now being classified as a homicide case.

"She has not been identified as of this time, however, we are assuming that it is her," Reichard said. Reichard said Le's family was contacted after state police found the body at around 5 p.m. Sunday in an area of the building that houses utility cables that run between floors.

Le swiped her identification card to enter the building that morning, but there was no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex. Investigators pored over blueprints and surveillance video footage while searching for her.

Le was from Placerville. She was set to get married Sunday in Syosset, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore.

Later Sunday night Le's brother Christopher who attends U.C. Davis posted a message on his Facebook page saying "The human race has failed. I love you my one and only sister."

I'm going to look for a link, but Charlie Gibson just said police have a suspect!

Here it is:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/evidence-annie-le-murder-lead-killer/story?id=8565647

Authorities investigating the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le (http://abcnews.go.com/US/body-found-search-missing-yale-bride-annie-le/story?id=8560293) have focused their efforts on a suspect who failed a lie detector test, sources told ABC News.

That suspect has what appear to be defensive wounds, a key piece of circumstantial evidence.

In addition, the suspect, who authorities believe knew Le, failed a lie detector test, sources told ABC News. Sources also told ABC News that bloody clothing removed from the lab contained evidence that links the killer to the crime.

Investigators have been looking at everyone from Yale maintenance people to people who worked in the lab and fellow students.

"We're not believing it's a random act," Officer Joe Avery, a police spokesman, told The Associated Press. He would not provide further details but said no one else is in danger.

A body believed to be Le's (http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=8554735) was found Sunday evening, stuffed into a wall in the basement of the Amistad Street laboratory where she was last seen Tuesday morning.

Though police have seemingly narrowed in on a suspect, the mood around Yale is still one of sadness and uncertainity. The last on-campus murder was the 1998 stabbing death of 21-year-old Suzanne Jovin. There has been no arrest in her death.

Reached in Germany, Thomas Jovin told ABCNews.com that he did not wish to comment on Le's murder or his daughter's.

New Haven Police Officer Joe Avery told ABCNews.com today that authorities didn't start focusing on the lab until a few days after Le was reported missing. Police were initially unsure, he said, if she had voluntarily disappeared in advance of her wedding, scheduled for Sunday, or if she had been a crime victim.

Once video surviellance cameras revealed Le coming into the building on Tuesday, but not leaving. Search efforts focused on the building.

Her body was eventually found, he said, by members of the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Unit.

Sources: Police Have Suspect in Yale Murder CaseMonday, September 14, 2009
By Aaron KaterskyNew Haven Connecticut --

Sources tell ABC News police they have a suspect in the murder of the California graduate student Annie Le. That source said authorities are focusing on a suspect who failed a lie detector test and also has defensive wounds. Police have said nothing publicly about a suspect, but ABC News has learned that there is one a man who failed a lie detector test and who shows signs of defensive wounds. The relationship between the suspect and Annie Le is not immediately clear but police said that her apparent killing was not random. Detectives also said, nobody else on the Yale campus is in danger. Police said they found the body on Sunday; it was shoved into a small space meant to conceal pipes and wiring in the basement wall of a Yale laboratory building. They assume it was the body of Annie Le's.
"Detectives have recovered a large amount of physical evidence," said Assistant Chief Peter Reichard with the New Haven Police Department, "We're not releasing any information at this time because we have an ongoing homicide case."

Le, a 24-year-old graduate student, disappeared Tuesday. She was captured on surveillance cameras entering the lab building but despite more than 70 cameras in the area, there was no picture of her leaving.
Her body was apparently discovered on the very day she was supposed to be getting married. Her fiancé is not a suspect.

Body in Yale building ID'd as missing grad student

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut's chief medical examiner says the body found hidden behind a wall in a Yale University research building is that of a missing graduate student. Dr. Wayne Carver says 24-year-old Annie Le's death is a homicide. He says he's temporarily withholding the cause of death "in order to facilitate the investigation."

Le vanished from the Yale medical building on Tuesday, prompting a massive search that included more than 100 state, federal and local police. Her body was discovered hidden in a wall Sunday.

Police have said they do not yet have a suspect, but say the killing was targeted and students are not in danger.

I get the feeling this crime was specific to Annie. I think it involved extreme jealousy, either of her brilliance or because she loved another. I don't know if anyone else is in danger.

JMO

I kind of wonder...being this close to the wedding whether the murderer had some sort of crush on her and didnt want her to get married.

This was the first thought that crossed my mind. An indescribably cruel, hateful, soul-less act - possible in the name of "love."

I am so sick about this that it is choking me. JMO

NEW HAVEN — Detectives have strong leads in the slaying of Yale graduate student Annie Le and interest is focused on a lab technician who works in the building where the body was found Sunday, multiple police sources confirmed Monday.

The Yale employee has been under the law enforcement microscope since before Annie Le's body was found Sunday in a mechanical chase in the basement of the 120,000-square-foot building.

He had scratches on his chest, as if he were in some type of a struggle, which drew police attention, the sources confirmed.

He also took and failed an FBI-administered polygraph exam, they said, and at some point during questioning invoked his right to an attorney present and stopped answering questions. Over the last week, police interviewed and re-interviewed roughly 100 people who work or have access to 10 Amistad St., and the person on whom police appear to be zeroing in was among them

I CANT FIND IT........he made some random comment to a journalist.....that just sounded 'off' to me.....struck me as 'obsessed with her', 'guilty', 'perpetrator'.....nothing obvious....but just 'off'.....he was in 'love' with her, he was jealous....(is how I perceived it).....(OH I"M SOOO TICKED)....I knew I should have 'flagged' it when I read it......

This is just my personal opinion, but this strikes me as a crime of passion, especially that it occurred so near her wedding day...this person (perpetrator), didn't want her to marry....went to all lengths to prevent that from occurring. I don't personally see this as just a random act. This strikes me as someone who knew her, maybe not intimately, but certainly on an aquaintance level, that was in my opinion, obsessed with her, and wanted to make a statement of his 'passion' for her, that 'she was his', by perpetrating this violent act, so near her wedding date. (Again, this is only speculation and my personal opinion)

DNA will catch Yale grad student Annie Le's killer

Tuesday, September 15th 2009, 4:00 AM

NEW HAVEN - A crime scene investigator in a white haz-mat suit emerged from the red brick lab building to fetch something from a white truck parked on Amistad St.

He returned inside to collect more evidence for another kind of lab, evidence in the murder of pharmacology student Annie Le.

Even before her body was found Sunday, police had taken a keen interest in a technician at this Yale lab building who failed a polygraph test in a big way.

He also has defensive wounds, scratches on his chest reminiscent of the Preppie Killer, Robert Chambers, after he killed Jennifer Levin in Central Park in 1986. Only there is no indication that Le and this lab tech had any kind of social relationship or encounters outside the workplace.

The wounds are equally reminiscent of Joseph Pabon, the elevator operator accused of killing a cleaning woman named Eridania Rodriguez in the Rector St. building where they worked, but were never friendly.

The victim in that case went missing until she was found in an air conditioning duct just as Le went missing before she was found in a utilities conduit.

As of Monday evening, the police were saying only that they do not have a suspect in custody.

True enough. The questioning ended and the lab technician was allowed to leave after he invoked his Miranda rights, asking for a lawyer.

You can be sure they have him under surveillance. He is not going anywhere. Some observers suggest the police are being extra-cautious because the last time a Yale student was murdered, they were accused of botching the case by fixating on a single suspect too early on.

But the New Haven cops are being neither more nor less cautious than the NYPD was in the Pabon case, where the suspect was allowed to go free but kept under surveillance pending the DNA test on skin found under the victim's fingernails.

The big problem with the last Yale murder was a lack of evidence. Suzanne Jovin was found stabbed to death in 1998 on a quiet street where anyone had access. There were no witnesses, no camera footage.

In the Le case, only a limited number of people with swipe cards have access to the basement where she was found. That includes the tech. Surveillance cameras record everyone who enters and leaves the building.

And there is blood evidence.

Be it the tiniest trace of the killer's blood on Le or Le's blood on the killer, be the blood on their person or their clothing, blood means DNA.

And DNA almost certainly means gotcha.

Even as the search continued at the Yale lab where Le was murdered, testing of the blood evidence was sure to be underway at another lab.

If the DNA points to the Yale lab technician with the defensive wounds, you need only think of the Pabon case. Minutes after those DNA results came in, Pabon was in handcuffs.

And Le's killer will have been caught with evidence derived from the basic workings of life at an infinitesimal level, the same level where Le did her research.

Le was to have been married on Sunday, but she would soon have been back at her own kind of lab investigation: How something called protein-tyrosine phosphatase influences the body's use of insulin and the metabolism of glucose. Anybody with type 2 diabetes should be able to tell you its importance.

As a high school student, Le volunteered to help the sick at a local hospital. As a fledgling scientist, she was working to help keep people from getting sick in the first place.

And she did the work with the smile everybody remembers.

They also remember how much she loved her fiancé.

She no doubt would be pleased to know that yesterday a Yale history professor asked everyone at a big lecture to take a moment and call somebody they love.

Later, there was a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the young scientist who helped this great university live up to the motto on its crest, "Lux et Veritas," or "Light and Truth."

And as the candles flickered at the heart of the campus, the light softly illuminating faces as young and bright as Le had been, the clock was ticking toward those DNA results.

NHPD: Arrest in Yale case NOT imminent
Autopsy results to be released at 3pm
Updated: Tuesday, 15 Sep 2009, 11:07 AM EDT
Published : Tuesday, 15 Sep 2009, 5:37 AM EDT

New Haven (WTNH) - New Haven police said today that an arrest was not imminent in the homicide case of a Yale graduate student.

Earlier reports indicated that police were close to making an arrest in the death of 24-year old Annie Le.

The New Haven Register , citing police sources, reports a lab technician who works inside 10 Amistad St. is the focus of the investigation.

New Haven Police Officer Joe Avery issued a brief statement late Monday morning and said no suspects were in custody and he could not confirm or deny that they had a person of interest.

Avery also said that authorities have interviewed about 100 people.

Le disappeared one week ago today. A security camera captured an image of the 24-year-old woman as she entered the medical building. Her body was found Sunday night in a wall in the basement.

The lab building at 10 Amistad St. is expected to be reopened later this morning under increased security. Those who have lab work to do can do so but under the protection of police.

Authorities are analyzing what is being described as a large amount of physical evidence.

The Yale Daily News reports University President Richard Levin met with members of the medical school community, and said people who had access to the basement where Le's body was found are being monitored.

"The people in the basement aren’t going to cause any trouble until the matter is resolved," Levin said.

The Register also reporting the technician had scratches on the chest that appeared to have come from a struggle. ABC News reported Monday the person being questioned had what were described as defensive wounds and failed a polygraph exam.

The Office of the State Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of Le after an autopsy Monday, and ruled her death a homicide. The cause of death was not initially disclosed, though police say they will be releasing that information at 3pm.

Police stress Le's death appears to be an isolated incident, but students still have worries.

"It's a little unsettling, you have to keep going and mourn for Annie and her family," Yale Student Amanda Chang said.

Monday night thousands of students attended a candlelight vigil at Cross Campus to remember Le.

A swarm of cops has descended on the home of a Yale animal research technician who worked with murdered grad student Annie Le.

Public records show the lab tech lives in a first-floor apartment at the complex in Middletown, about 20 miles from the Yale, The Associated Press reports.

Police parked outside the Wharfside Commons apartment complex would not confirm they were there to investigate the Le killing. A man answering the door there said the lab tech wasn't at home and closed the door.

Cops say the tech is not in custody.

Police zeroed in on the man several days ago, after he failed lie detector tests and had scratches on his chest that suggest he was in a struggle.

Cops and FBI agents interviewed the suspect several times. At one point he stopped answering questions and asked for a lawyer, the New Haven Register reported.

Cops found the 24-year-old pharmacology student's body stuffed in a wall in her lab on Sunday - what would have been her wedding day. She went missing a week ago today.

New Haven Police spokesman Joe Avery said Tuesday it was his "hope" that an arrest would be made by 1 p.m., but later changed course, saying, "As of right, now we have nobody in custody and there is no anticipated arrest as of today."

`No students involved' as Yale police hunt killer

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

A body found stuffed in a wall at a Yale University laboratory has been identified as Annie Le, a student who went missing days before she was to be married, police said.
The 24-year-old's body was found late on Sunday, the day she had planned to marry Jonathan Widawsky, a graduate student at Columbia University in New York, police said.

Footage from a Yale University security camera showed Le entering a medical research building on the morning of September 8. She had not been seen since.

ABC News reported that authorities were narrowing their efforts on a suspect who has failed a lie detector test
