A Minot State University student who lived in the apartment across from Anita Knutson says he saw a broken window in her apartment.
Matt Murphy says he often parks his bike in a rack next to Knutson's bedroom window. He says he went to get his bicycle at noon Monday and noticed a broken window, with glass on the ground.
The body of the 18-year-old Knutson was found in her bedroom late Monday afternoon. Police suspect she was killed by an intruder.
They've released few details.
Police Lieutenant Dan Strandberg says a witness reported seeing a man running from the area. He's described as about 6-foot-2 with dark hair, weighing about 200 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt and dark shorts.
Knutson was from Butte, and graduated from Velva High School.
The school librarian, Iris Swedlund, describes her as "smiley and happy and colorful."
Knutson died of stab wounds
The Minot Police Department on Tuesday released new information regarding the murder of 18-year-old Anita Knutson early last week.
Though police have not yet received an autopsy report, Lt. Dan Strandberg said they are releasing initial observations from the autopsy indicating how Knutson was killed.
Strandberg said the manner of death was from two stab wounds to the chest, though he declined to say exactly where the wounds to the chest were located. He also noted that police do have a weapon in custody, but are not releasing any further details at this time.
Police have gotten some leads from the public, according to Strandberg, but so far they have “nothing that brings us into a specific focus of a person or persons.”
He said since they don’t have anybody specific they are looking for, they have to follow every lead they get, which is a slow and arduous process.
“Without any real focus, we have to run all those leads down,” Strandberg said. “That takes a lot of time.”
Knutson, a Minot State University student from Butte, was found dead in her northwest Minot apartment June 4 by her father. Funeral services were held Monday in Velva, where Knutson graduated from high school.
A memorial fund to put up a park bench with a plaque dedicated to Anita Knutson’s memory has been set up by Terry Delzer and her daughter Michelle of Minot. Anyone wishing to donate can go to any First International Bank and Trust location, or mail donations to the Anita Knutson Memorial Fund, c/o First International Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 1967, Minot, ND 58702. Delzer said any money left over will go to the Knutson family.
