Did anyone watch this new show last night?

I wasn't going to ... I never cared for Julianna Margulies and didn't think the show would be something DH would care for but he suggested we give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised.

Julianna plays the part of the wife, Alicia Florrick, married to a politician, Chris Noth, who is exposed for having cheated on her with a prostitute. I found this particularly timely with all the news stations discussing John Edwards yesterday.

In this first episode, Noth is sent to jail and Margulies has to resume her career as an attorney that she left 13 years ago. They are still married but she is portrayed as being thoroughly pizzed and disgusted with him. A very understandable attitude, IMO.

I was impressed with the writing. When Maragulies character does go back to work after that 13 year gap she runs into a problem with the age gap in that the young bloods act like she's senile and her so-called "mentor", a part played by Christine Baranski (I loved her as the kooky side kick of Cybil in that show), seems to think the firm's giving her the job was a hand out and that she's incompetent and directs her to simply re-try a pro bono case exactly as she had done previously when it ended up as a hung jury. Baranski's character is less than pleased when that doesn't happen and is ready to get rid of her.

We will definitely watch this show again. It's the first thing I've ever seen her in that I found her attractive! (I know, that sounds petty, doesn't it.)

I too enjoyed it...didn't realize she was a lawyer...should be a good show. I didn't care for her in ER but did like her in this.

"I didn't care for her in ER...... " Me either. That's why I had not planned on watching. There are a few actresses that I just will not (normally) watch. Just reading that they're in the cast will cause me to pass the show by and she was one of them ... Lesley Ann Warren is another

OK! Tonight is another episode of The Good Wife.

I'm anxious to see if I'm going to still like it and if she's going to look good again this week of if she's going to go back to her old ER appearance.

Too much foreshadowing ...
They keep setting the stage for her future discoveries but nothing ever happens. We know her kids are going to tell her the films/photos were doctored. Get it over with!!

And please, if they've offered a half million dollar settlement, don't let the client go to trial "for the principle of the thing". Every lawyer in the country would have told the stripper/ex-escort to take the money and sign the darn confidentiality agreement. If it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, you will have no problem washing it out with a giant bottle of champagne.

Missed the first show, thinking it was a made for TV movie, have enjoyed watching it since.

Not sure why she is so upset with her Mother yet, good to see the kids getting involved at finding out if he was set up.

I'm pretty sure that's her MIL.

I can't wait till the kids blow the roof off. But, I don't know how they'll handle that and keep the series going on and on.

I started off with high hopes for the show but it seems its gotten rather bland and slow-paced. Last airing was a repeat. For a new show to already be doing repeat episodes seems strange. Low ratings perhaps?

I also started out wanting to watch this show because I like Chris Noth's acting and the lead actress was pretty good in The Sopranos....but the first night it was on, I was in the hospital and missed the show.

Then I said forget it afterwards. But heck, if they are showing reruns already then maybe i won't miss anything.

Last time I got hyped up for a show was Desperate Housewives and the first season I thought was really well acted and I liked that it seemed 'real' (or Lynette's part did as I could somehow relate to giving up a high powered position to stay home and raise children, but my goodness, the last episode was becoming a bit ridiculous and now I am happy i never stuck with it. It would be like watching a daily soap.

FoolsGold

It would be like watching a daily soap. They are ALL soaps. Even the very realistic things like Hill Street Blues with its background soundtrack that occasionally caused dialog to me missed, it was still nothing but a soap that happened to be on during the night and happened to have sponsors that were not detergent companies.

Hollywood has interesting phrases: soap, oater, etc.

I forget what a staff writer makes for a tv show. I know a scriptwriter on a movie used to get 85k at start of principal photography but don't know what they get now.

I was surprised (and disappointed) at that repeat show too. I still like the show but I'm having trouble categorizing the characters as either "good guys" or "bad guys". I think maybe the writers are too.

For example, Cary (Matt Czuchry) -- Czuchry???? I think I'd have picked a "stage name". Is he going to be a back stabber or not?

And Diane (Christine Baranski) == I LOVED her on Cybil and thought she really "stole the show" there. She can play the part of a b*tch to perfection, can't she? Is she going to be supportive to Alicia or pull the rug out from under her?

and Kalinda? (Archie Panjabi) -- I don't remember ever seeing her before but when she's on the screen that's who you watch. I can't figure out where she stands either.

I hope the writers "flesh out" the characters and give them direction before I get disgusted and quit watching.

unable to characterize as being good or bad shows that a character has depth and complexity and is usually a good sign since this is what is more commonly found in real life.

Its why film noir often features the highly cynical and very jaded as heroes.

I hope it does not turn into one of those shows where she is always 'right' or that she always 'wins'

I really liked 'Shark' with James Woods, but it became too predictable, and was canceled.

I hope that this show is more like LA LAW, with a more realistic winning and loosing type of show, that gives viewers something to talk about.

I agree with that. She needs to have a few flaws.

FoolsGold
11-12-2009, 05:50 PM
Flaws?
Before it became rather silly, that Monk detective show was about a character with flaws.

A good many detective novels now feature characters with flaws:
Detectives who are alcoholics or have personal lives in great upheaval.
Detectives who are remorseless and unrepentant thieves.
Detectives who are social outcasts for some reason or who have a career-blocking blemish on their record.

The trouble is that for commercial television advertisers want PABLUM. Bland characters that offend no one. Or JELLO or whatever is not particularly thrilling but not particularly offensive either.

Even the movie Matchstick Men which featured a grifter with a host of personal problems deleted the scene where he came home and suddenly encountered his "daughter" in a skimpy bikini. Corporate sponsors for TV shows simply do not want controversy. They want high ratings for the shows but not due to controversy. Too much realism in a TV show and the ad slots will remain unsold.

PatC
11-13-2009, 03:45 PM
You're probably right FG. It's all about the "bottom line"... heaven forbid someone should turn off the show and miss a commercial. I guess I'm just not as easily offended as some folks. LOL

Last night was excellent. grandma found the pictures, thought they were prono, threw them in the trash, told on the son.
At the very end, the main person over the law firm told her, her husbanc had been set up and would never get out of the pen.

Yeah, I finally remembered what night the show is on and I caught (most of) the last episode. She kissed hubby in some prisonish meeting, but I don't think that her kids have told her of their suspicions regarding doctored photos. It seems the video tape was not doctored though because the husband's lawyer and the husband referred to the "relationship" between the husband and the hooker on the tape.
I don't know what happened in the episodes I missed but I'm sure it was mainly time wasting filler about side issues.
That dementia stricken departing senior partner made it clear he wouldn't provide any answers or facts to support his statement about the husband.
Well,,, I hope next week I can remember atleast which night its on!

Did the little kid get in trouble for use of Grandma's purloined credit card for a fruitless phone call?

Is the 16 year old girl interested in the 14 year old son for nefarious purposes related to the case or is it just a crush. Normally a 16 year old girl wouldn't give the time of day to a boy who was younger.

Is that Betting Site vignette an indication of things to come for a larger amount of money than fifty dollars? In the Real World there are some people who have parlayed fifty dollars in fifty grand on those sites.

mosgranny
11-27-2009, 09:00 AM
I was afraid I had missed the first part of the show, then remembered it was programed in to record on the DVR.

FG, you asked some very great questions, all which would make for future shows.

Thinking the 16 yr old wanted him to do her homework in exchange for the other.

Yes he got punished, remember the Mom putting the computer in the living area of the house and he could no longer hide in his bedroom with it. So now he has no privacy when using it.

Think you could be extremely surprised at what 16 yr old girls do today. Some even younger than that.

Oh good I'm going out to the poker club tonight and the Dead Men will be thru playing poker by then and will probably want to watch that show about a Sturgis Motorcycle Bar thats on at the same time. So atleast I won't have to switch their TV during the ads between Motorcycles and the Goodwife.
