The 2006 Kentucky Derby champion, who was euthanized Jan. 29, 2007 from complications of a breakdown suffered at the Preakness, will have his ashes interred at Churchill Downs.

Barbaro's remains will be placed outside of an entrance gate in a large elevated space enclosed by bricks. The site will also include a bronze statue commissioned by owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and loaned to the track as part of the official memorial site. The track will install a bronze marker at the site soon. The track plans to unveil the statue and formally dedicate the site in 2009.

Gretchen Jackson said Churchill Downs was the best place to honor the colt, who won the Derby by a dominating 6-1/2 lengths before being injured in the Preakness two weeks later.

"(The Derby) was for us the greatest race that Barbaro ran," she said. "When we think about Barbaro, we think about him running around the track out there. We'll always have that joyous memory."

The Jacksons wrestled with the decision on where to bury the colt for months. The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. was among several places that offered to accomodate the Jacksons.

Ultimately, they said they wanted to make sure the public would be able to visit the memorial whenever possible.

"After the Derby and then when he got injured, he really became America's horse," Roy Jackson added. "We sort of felt an obligation that his remains and statue be erected someplace where the general public could pay their respects."

As spectacular as the colt's career was, he became an icon after breaking his right hind leg a few hundred yards into the Preakness. His eight-month battle to survive captured the hearts of people across the globe. Fans set up Web sites, and well-wishers flooded the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., and Churchill Downs with cards and gifts.

"His accomplishments as a racehorse are certainly rivaled by the courage and resolve he displayed after his injury," Churchill Downs president Steve Sexton said.

:1222423: for the poor young horse who died needlessly after being kept in pain for months to fatten the owners pockets. he died in a useless engagement that humans choose to call sport. he's actually one of the lucky ones who didn't require middle of the night calls to some simple soul with a big heart, that soul heard shit like "if you're not here in 2 hours we're putting a bullet in him" but then, the unluckly ones didn't have sperm worth selling or worth keeping another animal in horrific pain for months at a time just to milk his sperm for the next crop of moneymakers on the track. for humans amusement. but hey, go on, enjoy the moving tribute to barbaro. after all, they are just property, right?

All I know, Mary, is that I had a beloved mare that I raised from a baby, and at 3 years old, my vet and farrier both told me she needed to be put down because of severe laminitis. It could never get better, only worse, and they had already tried everything. Her xrays showed extreme rotation. It's been nearly two years now, and I still love her and miss her as much as I did the day it happened.

If I'd had the money to keep her alive as long as they did Barbaro, and if she was not in pain, I can't say I wouldn't have done it. But it would have been for me, and not for her, because she would have had no quality of life.

Animals are not property to me, and from what I've read, they aren't to you. To me, they are angels on earth. Someday, I'll feel blessed that I had Wind for the time we had together. Right now, I just want her back.

Barbaro was and will forever be a champion, in body, heart and spirit, IMO.

I'm not going to get into the controversy over horse racing or anything related to Barbaro's surgeries and hospitalization....but I will say I saw a number of interviews with his owners and I was very impressed. I believe they loved him very much.....as all of America did.

I'm not on any bandwagon one way or the other...I just know I followed the Barbaro story for a very, very long time and shed many, many tears.

So this is really personal to me. I get that way over occasional animal stories in the news....Vivi the lost whippet from Westminster was another one.

I'm such a crybaby.

I loved Barbaro. I am happy he is now at peace. He fought the good fight, and yes, he is a champion now and forever.

Barbaro was America's horse.. many came to love this horse and it is only fitting that there should be a memorial for him.:1222423:

There will never be any Barbaro foals, they did not collect semen from him. The Jockey Club has never allowed artificial insemination, or AI. They are the ones who set the standards for Thoroughbred breeding here in the US, no offspring that results from artificial insemination or embryo transfer can have the coveted designation of running in the Triple Crown. The only way a thoroughbred is allowed to reproduce is by "live cover"; i.e., horse-to-horse sexual intercourse. Barbaro was never able to become a father.

Barbaro is quite a noble being. Vets learned alot about how to help other animals through Barbaro's suffering.

May your karma be purifed, may you have a fortunate rebirth with the opportunity to continue to inspire and benefit others lifetime after lifetime.

PRAIRIE IN THE SKY--

By Bill Staines

"There's a prairie in the sky, I'll find it by and by
Hues of brown and yellow to make a soul unwind

Let the music take me home to where my heart may roam
I'll fly across the meadows, touch the tall grass as I go.

Let the gentle western wind stay with me 'til the end
Beside me 'til the day is done and the sun is settled low.

Leave the ponies to run free, far as the eye can see.
I'd ride the range forever to see them once again.

Let the wild, flying things soar above me on their wings,
And the stars fill up the night sky and the moon light up the plains."

sorry if i sound bitter but i used to be more heavily involved with horse rescue & lived too damn close to the rockingham track. i have no patience for the industry. i saw more good horses ruined for $ than i should have.
