Missing Kansas Girl Possibly Headed to South Valley

A Kansas girl has been missing for days, and authorities think she might be headed to Kings County.

15-year-old Shirley Stockton's family lives in Lemoore, and although she did live with her father in the South Valley town over the summer, they don't think she ran away to Lemoore.

The Riley County Police Department in Kansas said the girl's disappearance is classified as a runaway teenager.

"Just call somebody please Shirley, call somebody please. We love you," Daryl Stockton, Shirley's dad, said.

Shirley has been missing since Monday, and Daryl says waiting for news about his missing daughter is the hardest part.

"There's no way she did this on her own," he said.

Shirley disappeared from the Manhattan, Kansas area where she lives with her mom and sisters.

Police in Riley County say they think Shirley is headed to her father's house in Lemoore.

"If she did that she would have called one of us," Daryl said.

According to authorities, Shirley was last seen at Manhattan High School before classes started Monday morning.

Her cell phone was found several hours later about four miles away along the side of a Kansas highway. That was the last time anyone heard anything from her.

"I mean a 15-year-old ain't throwing a cell phone away. I don't understand what's going on," Daryl said.

The Riley County police department tells KMPH news they don't think Shirley is in any immediate danger, and they've let the Kings County Sheriffs Department know she might be headed out to their area.

"We want to be able to get her with family; people that can help her. I'd rather be a part of that process than to find her hurt some place," Kings County Sheriff Chris Jordan said.

Shirley's family said authorities need to look harder for their girl Kansas, because if she was headed to Lemoore, they say she would have been here by now.

"I don't know what they're going to do, not investigate it until they have a body and then say oh now we're going to investigate it because we have a murder?" Daryl said.

The Riley County Police Department said it's odd that a runaway from that area would be missing for several days without contacting someone, but it's happened before.

Authorities at the department also say Shirley's disappearance does not qualify for an Amber Alert.

Missing Manhattan Girl
Beth Vaughn

15 year old Manhattan girl, Shirley Stockton has been missing since Monday morning. Her family now tries to piece together what happened.

Shirley’s mother, Sandra Stockton, says, “She could be hiding out somewhere, I don't know, somebody could have her hiding out, who knows?” She continues, “It's been four days and it just doesn't make sense.”

She was last seen on the corner of Westwood and Poyntz at 7:45 Monday morning pacing in between the teacher parking lot and the entrance to Manhattan high school. However, at 10:45 that same morning, her cell phone was found here more than on a Highway 177 scenic over-look more than 10 miles away from the school.

Since then, Shirley's mother has tried to sift through more than 500 text messages and over 20 different phone numbers, “There's a lot of phone calls that we don't know, just a lot of unanswered questions there. We just know from the text messages that she was being threatened.”

She's found threatening messages from multiple disconnected phone numbers. The Riley County Police Department investigation has revealed that Shirley's disappearance may have been a planned event.

Though her mother says, “From the text messages, it doesn't show that she was voluntarily going. It was showing that someone was threatening us or her boyfriend.”

Police haven't ruled out the idea that Stockton could be traveling to California or Alabama with an unknown acquaintance to visit family.

Sandra Stockton says, “I know she might be scared but we love her, we miss her and we just want her home.”

Anyone with information should call the Riley county police department at 785-537-2112 or crime-stoppers at 785-539-7777. Stockton is about 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs around 115 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black pea coat.

Her mom thinks she is on her way to Callifornia. Her dad lives there and she visited him this summer, and she didnt come back until 4 weeks after she was supposed to, so she likes it there better it seems. Her mom is also fairly sure that she went on her own accord, since she has been talking about running away lately. So hopefully she wasnt taken forcibly, and that shes safe!!

I wish more parents would take the time and make a deal with their kids...Choose an adult that both you and your child feel would be safe. Let them know...if they need a break from everyone that is the place to go with no questions asked and no punishment for going. Tell them the only rule is that they call and tell you they are there and safe. No begging them to return until they feel ready to come home and talk. I only had one son take me up on it....We had taken his car away for grades..lol...He was hot! But not three days later, he was home of his own accord...still mad but much calmer...I guess no one thinks it can happen to them but teens are of a different mind set...and we should help them find alternatives to doing something stupid...Cause..well cause ...kids are stupid at times...

Girl found in Alabama; man arrested
Staff Reports

A 15-year old Manhattan girl, who had been reported missing since Jan. 28, was recovered in Alabama late Friday afternoon. A man with whom she was believed to have been traveling was arrested.

Law enforcement officials had previously concluded that Shirley Stockton voluntarily left Manhattan to go to either Tuscaloosa, Ala., or Lemoore, Calif. Teaming up for the recovery were the U.S. Marshal's Service, Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

Officials said detectives developed probable cause Thursday that 37-year old Prince Knight of Tuscaloosa drove to Manhattan on Jan. 27, picking up Stockton on Jan. 28, and returning to Tuscaloosa.

An arrest warrant was issued for Knight, and he was taken into custody Friday night at the residence of his mother in Tuscaloosa. Stockton was also there.

Knight was charged in a Riley County warrant with aggravated interference with parental custody and felony contributing to a child's misconduct. He was confined in lieu of $50,000 bond, and additional charges are expected.

Stockton was taken into protective custody and is expected to be released to her family.
