National Sex Offender Registry (http://www.nsopr.gov/)
This Web site is provided as a public service by the U.S. Department of Justice ("the Department"). Using this Web site, interested members of the public have access to and may search participating state Web site public information regarding the presence or location of offenders, who, in most cases, have been convicted of sexually-violent offenses against adults and children and certain sexual contact and other crimes against victims who are minors. The public can use this Web site to educate themselves about the possible presence of such offenders in their local communities.

Sex-offender list helps protect kids

By RICK BADIE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 03/22/05

He lives barely a mile from my home.

He's 35 or 36 years old; I can't say with certainty. The Gwinnett County Sheriff Department's sexual offender registry doesn't list his month and day of birth, just the year — 1969.

Exact age doesn't matter, anyway. It's the crime that's the issue, and his is unconscionable: lewd act upon a child under 16. He committed it three years ago in York, S.C.

Now he lives in a Norcross apartment complex off Jimmy Carter Boulevard. It's more than a stone's throw from my crib, but it's still close. Too close for comfort.

Because if this man gets the urge to act on a deviant impulse, my subdivision could be his playground. The children like to ride bikes, shoot hoops and play ninjas. They hunt for tadpoles, worms and other cool finds in the creek. Fun time is any time.

These days, fun time demands strong dosages of street smarts and adult supervision. We live side by side with predators, child molesters and pedophiles. Sick people. Yet many of them look just like you and me — boringly ordinary. Folk you see on milk and bread runs.

Sexual offenders must report to local authorities within 10 days after they are put on probation, paroled or released from prison. They are entered in the registry and remain on it for 10 years. Sexual predators — the really bad ones, who can't stop — remain on the registry for life.

All of the registered offenders have been convicted and punished. That doesn't mean they have left their past lives behind. We have far too many instances occur that prove otherwise. Just recently, a registered sex offender in central Florida confessed to killing 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, who had been missing since Feb. 23.

It's up to us to protect our children. We have to fortify their innocence and blind trust against predators waiting to abuse it. We have to teach them to be on alert to what's happening around them, especially when Mom and Dad aren't around.

Miles and I role-play at the bus stop. I'll grab him, forcefully, and ask him what he'd do. He used to not know. Now he does — knee, punch, poke and kick mightily, where it hurts the most. And scream for help with all his might. He knows not to wander too far away from home, even when in the company of friends.

The sexual offender's registry is an invaluable tool. Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway is proud that his agency was the first sheriff's department in Georgia to launch an online registry.

"We try to stay on top of it and keep it accurate," he said.

The registry section of the agency's Web site (www.gwinnettcountysheriff.com (http://www.gwinnettcountysheriff.com/)) posts an average of nearly 500 hits a day. It currently has information on more than 200 sexual convicts who live in every pocket of the county. The site carries their photos, date of birth, current address as well as information on the crime they committed.

Use it.

Thanks for this info. I just found out this morning that my mother has an offender living right across the street. Im going to visit with my kids in a week :girl_sad: I called her right away. She was not happy. kids will not be playing in front of her house for sure.

The one problem I have with these lists is that they don't, or are unable to, keep up with the addresses. Even if the pervs are on parole, they go to the PO, he/she doesn't come to check on where they're living.

The one thing we can do is, when we are aware of one in the area (or supposed to be living in the area), is contact LE if they move, or, in a case near here that I reported, never move into the address they give.

I agree Roamer, there are so many pervs out there and LE in most areas is understaffed and unable to keep up with them.. Same as with the PO, their case loads are so big that they don't/can't/won't keep up with them. That's a shame too. People need to know when one moves in next door to them and their children.

well, we're doing the best we can by trying to tighten up the registry laws.

I realize this opens up a whole can of worms, but truly my feeling is that it's getting better.

You're exactly right. It's so much better than it used to be.

Sadly, sometimes it takes a child being killed by some of these creeps to make parents or friends get angry enough to make sure the laws get changed.

I'm happy to report that Alabama is really going after these guys in the last couple years. Right now there's a statewide sweep going on, and they're going to make it a felony if they don't register, or don't keep their information up to date.

Every little bit helps.

I think there ought to be gradations within these registrations.

Why? If you molest a child you belong on the registry. Period.

Not all sex offenders are child molesters.

Definition of child is anyone under the age of 18. A 20 year old having sex with a 17 year old is considered child molestation?

Doesn't make sense.

You're both right, and I stand corrected.

I couldn't agree with you more on this!

I've found out recently, someone I went to church with about 12 yrs ago and is a very highly respected member of his church, was accused of molestation of at least 6 charges, on 5 children, dating back from 1985 until his only conviction in 1991. He got a plea deal, and one that should not have happened, IMO. He plead guilty of the 2 charges on one child, under age 13, in exchange for all other charges being dropped. He got one yr suspended sentence & 3 yrs probation. Because of state laws, this happened before the time period our state decided these perverts should register, so he's not registered at all. To this day, he's still a very respected member of a church, teaches children and in fact sometimes takes them back & forth to church in his personal vehicle. Add to all of this, even though the records are public records, a search of his counties database for some reason doesn't even have the records available for public viewing

I am appalled and shocked at the whole thing, and am working very hard at doing something about all of it. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. When talking with the State Le who maintains our offender registry, I have been reminded several times over, it is against the law to harass anybody for a crime they committed after they have served their time, especially in a case such as this, since he is NOT listed as an offender :waitasec:

(btw, hello all, have been lurking for a few weeks but very busy working on this issue and not had time to say hello or post :))

Personally, I would want to know if a child molester or a rapist lived next door to me. We have a right to know so we can protect ourselves and our loved ones.
