Remains of body found in Nantahala National Forest
February 03, 2008 13:01 EST

FRANKLIN, N.C. (AP) -- A crime scene was set up in the Nantahala National Forest after an outdoorsman found the skeletal remains of a body there.

State and federal authorities were at the scene in Macon County on Sunday.

Macon County Sheriff Robert Holland said authorities are treating the death as a homicide.

Holland said an outdoorsman found the remains before dark Saturday.

By Sunday, investigators from the sheriff's office, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, state Wildlife Resources Commission and the U.S. Forest Service were at the scene.

Holland said it was unclear how long the body had been in the forest. It was found down a bank off the side of a road.

Investigators say remains found over the weekend in Transylvania County are those of hiker John Bryant who has been missing since fall. His wife's body was located in November.

Brevard, NC -- Transylvania County Sheriff John Mahoney said Monday that the body found Saturday by a hunter in Macon County is that of missing hiker, John Bryant.

Bryant, 80 and his wife Irene, 84 went missing late last fall while hiking in the North Carolina mountains. Irene's body was found in November.

Mahoney has said he believes 61-year-old Gary Michael Hilton is responsible for the deaths. Hilton pleaded guilty to murdering a hiker in Georgia last week.

Mahoney said North Carolina authorities tried to interview Hilton, but he declined and asked for an attorney.
