February 03, 2008 13:01 EST
FRANKLIN, N.C. (AP) -- A crime scene was set up in the Nantahala National Forest after an outdoorsman found the skeletal remains of a body there.
State and federal authorities were at the scene in Macon County on Sunday.
Macon County Sheriff Robert Holland said authorities are treating the death as a homicide.
Holland said an outdoorsman found the remains before dark Saturday.
By Sunday, investigators from the sheriff's office, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, state Wildlife Resources Commission and the U.S. Forest Service were at the scene.
Holland said it was unclear how long the body had been in the forest. It was found down a bank off the side of a road.
