Thursday morning, the family was loading into the car. Adrian's mother was getting in the
driver's seat, and Adrian was getting into the back seat when a gray or silver Volkswagen Jetta pulled up past the house. One of the suspects jumped out of the car and took Adrian, who struggled with his abductors. His mother attempted to approach the Jetta to get him, but the car doors were locked.

The teens were last seen wearing white-hooded sweatshirts with orange flames on them and driving the four-door Jetta with dark-tinted windows.

Adrian is in kindergarten at Copperfield Elementary in the Pflugerville Independent School District. Two police cars are on campus, and police said they're interviewing students and teachers.

"Teachers are cooperating with police's efforts to gather whatever information the students might have," said Amanda Brim, community relations coordinator with PISD.

KXAN Austin News talked to Zuleina Jaimes, Adrian's 10-year-old sister. She was in the car with him Thursday morning when he was abducted. She said they were on their way to school.

Zuleina said Adrian was screaming when the men abducted him. She said she had seen two of the men about a week ago near Copperfield Elementary. They had driven up to her and her brother, opened the door slightly, but did not do anything. She notified her principal.

She said the driver of that car a week ago was one of the men who abducted Adrian Thursday morning.

She said she believes the men may have abducted Adrian for money, but did not know if the men knew her parents. She said she's extremely scared for him.

If this is a kidnapping for ransom, shouldn't the family have some contact from the group letting them know how much money they want?

From the looks of the home, this is a middle class neighborhood. I wonder what kind of work the parents do?

I don't know if this is the case, but lately in Texas, if a family here has paid a Coyote (they bring illegals in under the radar) to bring in family from Mexico, sometimes the family here will not pay the whole amount until the person is delivered. Once the person is delivered, some families are not paying the balance of the monies. Coyotes are kidnapping children here and taking them back to Mexico, hold them as ransom til they are paid. Many families will not always give police complete information fearing the child kidnapped will be killed anyway. The Coyotes have a better chance getting their money by kidnapping here and taking the child or person back to Mexico.

Local Amber Alerts here were saying the car was thought to be headed to Mexico.

The situation may be that a non-custodial parent (due to drugs, abuse, etc.) kidnapped the child because they couldn't get legal custody. That happens down here also. The parent will have the child taken to Mexico and then they vanish into the interior of the country. Usually, U.S. gang members will not kidnap a child like this. However, the gang MS-13 that is crossing our borders from South America will. My guess: Coyotes wanting the rest of their monies, or a non-custodial parent is more likely.

An Amber Alert was issued Thursday morning for Adrian Jaimes, a 5-year-old boy who was kidnapped from the 11800 block of Shropshire Boulevard in Northeast Austin.

Police said Jamies was abducted about 7:45 a.m. by four men in their late teens driving a grey Volkswagen Jetta with dark tinted windows. They left eastbound on Shropshire.

According to Austin police, Jaimes was sitting in the back seat of an SUV when a gray Jetta pulled into their driveway and abducted Jaimes from the car. Jaimes' mother and sister were in the front of the car.

Adrian's sister Zuleima Jaimes said she was fighting and screaming during the kidnapping.

Adrian's sister said she recognized two of the men and added that they had followed them home before and said it's a possibility that her family was targeted.

Police are investigating and said it was not a random kidnapping.

"It was obvious to us that this was not a random kidnapping. There's a reason behind it," Joe Munoz with Austin police said. "We're trying to figure out what that reason is."

The boy is described as 4 feet tall, 50 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, wearing a green jacket, black T-shirt and dark blue pants.

Police have already received more than 30 calls in connection
with this case.

Adrian is a student at Copperfield Elementary School. A letter has been sent home to parents advising them of the abduction.

Missing 5-year-old found safe

KVUE News

A five-year-old kidnapped from his home Thursday morning is found safe and unharmed.

Austin Police received a call at 8 p.m. Thursday from a citizen in the 800 block of Fairfield Drive in North Austin. The man told police he had a child that he believed was the 5-year-old. A couple of minutes later, officers patrolling in the area arrived at the man’s house, picked up Adrian and brought him to police headquarters where his parent’s positively identified him. The man who found police said he was outside and saw the young boy walking around in the area.

Police sayd they believe one of the suspects who kidnapped Adrian Thursday morning dropped the child off after publicity surrounding the boy’s kidnapping spread.

Investigators had been following up on nearly 400 tips and leads they received throughout the 13 hours Adrian was missing to determine who kidnapped him and why. His older sister described how it all happened.

“He was just screaming. Me and my mom were screaming too,” said Adrian’s sister, Zuleima Jaimes.

Zuleima was with Adrian when four men pulled up to their house Thursday morning. Police say two men jumped out of the car, a gray colored Volkswagon Jetta, grabbed Adrian from the Jeep and took off.

“They just opened the door and took him. We were fighting for him, but we couldn't get him,” said Zuleima.

Police say Adrian fought back and his mother ran over to the car, but the doors were locked, and the men left. Adrian’s sister called 9-1-1. Moments later police swarmed the house. Detectives fingerprinted the SUV and interviewed Adrian's family and neighbors.

“I don’t know why they did that to us,” said Zuleima.

An Amber Alert went out across the state and near the border. Highway alert signs warned drivers to watch for the young boy. Police also dispatched helicopters to fly over the highways.

By mid-afternoon the department had received more than 30 tips but none led them to Adrian.

His sister said she had seen at least one of the men who took her brother before.

“The driver was the one that took my brother -- it was the same,” said Zuleima.

On January 22, two men followed Zuleima when she was walking home from Copperfield Elementary school. After that her mother started driving Zulemia and Adrian to school.

That's what they were about to do Thursday morning when the four men pulled up and took Adrian. Police did not believe the kidnapping was random. Detectives say Adrian was specifically targeted, even though his mother and sister say they didn't know who the men were. His sister made a public plea for her brother's safety.

“Please do nothing to him. Well do whatever they want, but please don’t kill him,” said Zuleima.

Neighbors hoped for the best, as well.

“I don’t know what the mother is going through and the father. I’m sure they’re devastated and I do hope they find these people,” said family neighbor Joe Perez.

Copperfield Elementary went on partial lockdown Thursday after Adrian's kidnapping. The school also had extra police patrol on campus.

Police meanwhile continued to draw on a detailed description of the men who took Adrian. Detectives believe all four were Hispanic males possibly in their late teens. They were last seen wearing white hooded sweatshirts with a flame graphic. Police believe this is a criminal act of kidnapping by strangers.

I don't think it has anything to do with gangs. It possibly has to do with the non-custodial family. The non-custodial parent trys to make it look like a random kidnapping and the parent put them people up to do in. In Texas, I've never seen a local gang kidnap a child. JMHO

But thank goodness the little boy is safe.

True. To be honest, I sort of hope that is the case because then you know the child wouldn't have been harmed. If this child was just picked randomly, then the parents in that area have to be scared silly.

APD: Arrests Made In Adrian Jaimes Kidnapping Case
Updated: Feb 11, 2008 09:06 AM CST

The Austin Police Department has announced that they will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Monday, regarding arrests made in the Adrian Jaimes kidnapping case.

More than 400 tips came in to the Austin Police Department after four men snatched the child from his own driveway.

One of those tips came from the KXAN Austin News newsroom.

We came across a listing for a car on Austin's craigslist Web site, matching the suspects' vehicle description of a late-model, gray Volkswagen Jetta, offered at just $4,000.

"We appreciate our partners at KXAN. They found a silver Jetta, and I'll leave it at that, and we are looking at that," said APD Chief Art Acevedo.

Police aren't saying much about a possible motive in the case, but the Jaimes family attorney said he believes this may have been a ransom kidnapping and said it may be connected to the family's time in Mexico.

He adds that the family is legally in the U.S.

We will have a crew at the press conference, and we'll bring you a live report at 11:25 a.m. and on Austin News at Noon.

AUSTIN — Police say a man who thought his cousin owed him money was behind the abduction of the relative's 5-year-old son.

Modesto Vences-Garcia, 26, was charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony. He could face up to life in prison, if convicted.

Investigators allege Vences-Garcia recruited four people, including two teens, to carry out the abduction of Adrian Jaimes.

Vences-Garcia's cousin, Salvadore Hernandez, is the child's father.

The kidnappers opened the door of the family's car Thursday as the children's mother was about to take them to school, police said.

The boy was found safe Thursday night in a North Austin neighborhood. Police said they believe public attention about the abduction pressured the abductors to drop off the child unharmed in a populated area.

Adrian's 10-year-old sister was the initial target, police said. But the girl had recently reported that someone in a suspicious car had followed her to school, the Austin American-Statesman reported in its online edition Monday.

"We know this was motivated by money," Austin police Cmdr. Julie O'Brien said. "He wanted a lot of money."

O'Brien said Vences-Garcia told some associates he wanted $150,000 from the family. Police said a family member got two anonymous cell phone calls demanding $300,000 for the child's safe return.

Police said it wasn't clear why Vences-Garcia thought he was owed money.

Vences-Garcia was initially arrested on outstanding drug possession and drunken driving warrants. He also is accused of immigration violations.

Authorities also have charged Esau Alejandro Rodriguez-Flores, 17, and Hector Luis Hernandez, 19, with aggravated kidnapping. Two unidentified juveniles also have been charged.

Hernandez was being held on $500,000 bond Monday night in the Travis County Jail. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Meanwhile, officials said a 911 operator who had been criticized by police as "unduly harsh" with Adrian's mother when she reported the abduction has chosen to retire. The operator, Victor Cervantes, has worked in the dispatch center for 22 years. Officials say he made Zuleima Jaimes wait more than four minutes before telling her police were on the way and told her to stop crying so he could hear her better.

Police say the organizer of the kidnapping was Modesto Vences-Garcia, 26. Police say he is the cousin of the little boy's father. Also charged are Esau Alejandor Rodriguez-Flores, 17, Hector Luis Hernandez, 19, and two juveniles..
Adrian Jaimes was kidnapped last Thursday morning from his family's car in the driveway of his home in Northeast Austin. He was found, unharmed 13 hours later.
Within minutes of the kidnapping Thursday, police questioned neighbors who lived near the house where the boy was taken. What one neighbor told them led investigators to the suspects.
"During the canvas of the neighborhood, one of the neighbors reported to us that they had seen a blue Oldsmobile Allero that had been, they believed, behaving suspiciously in the neighborhood on more than one occasion," said Commander Julie O’Brien, Austin Police Department.

Click here for larger video (http://www.kvue.com/video/index.html?nvid=216892)

That neighbor wrote down a license plate number and police tracked it to Vences-Garcia.
"During the interview with Modesto, we became very suspicious," said O’Brien.

Detectives spoke with Modesto at his apartment in North Austin about the kidnapping. They also spoke with several of his relatives. One of them told police that a crying boy had been brought to Modesto’s apartment.
Police believe that is where the kidnappers brought Jaimes.
"Modesto Vences-Garcia, from the info we gathered, was basically the master-mind. This was his plan because he wanted to get money from Adrian’s father," said O’Brien.

Police say Vences-Garcia is the cousin of Adrian's father. Police say when they interviewed the other suspects, they told officers that Adrian's father owned Vences-Garcia money. And that’s why they took the child.
"We know it was motivated for money. He wanted a lot of money in exchange for the return of the child," said O’Brien. The suspects may have wanted $150,000.

Also, police said Monday the kidnapping had been planned for weeks.
Adrian's 10-year-old sister told KVUE News Thursday she recognized one of the men who took her brother as the same person who followed her home from school the week before. Police now believe "that" was connected to the kidnapping.

They also say Adrian was not the child they wanted.
"The target of the kidnapping all along had been the ten year old sister," O'Brien said.
Aggravated kidnapping is a first degree felony punishable by 20 years to life in prison.

The 9-1-1 operator who handled the call for help from Jaimes' 10-year-old sister decided to retire Monday, amid public criticism over how he conducted the call.

Zuleima Jaimes made that frantic call for help shortly after her brother was snatched from the family SUV.
Austin police announced Monday that the operator has retired, effective Monday.

"We talked to the dispatcher. We've counseled with him and as of this morning he's decided to retire. So we're going to go ahead and let him retire--- and move on," said Leo Enriquez, APD assistant chief.
The operator, Victor Cervantez had been a 9-1-1 call taker for the City of Austin for 22 years. Police did say they plan to improve training for all 9-1-1 call-takers in Austin.

Police: Boy's sister was kidnapping target

03:19 PM CST on Monday, February 11, 2008

Four people were behind bars Monday and a fifth was expected to be taken into custody soon in connection with the kidnapping of a 5-year-old boy in Northeast Austin.

Adrian Jaimes was taken from his family's car February 7 in their driveway on Shropshire Blvd near Dessau Road. Jaimes was found safe 13 hours later in a nearby area.

Police said the kidnappers planned to target the boy's sister, Zuleima Jaimes, 10, but went to the wrong side of the car and grabbed the boy instead. Four people were in the car that snatched Jaimes, but the man accused of planning the crime was not.

Police said Hector Luis Hernandez, 19, Modesto Vences-Garcia, 26, Esau Alejandro Rodriguez Flores, 17, and a juvenile were arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping. Investigators said another juvenile was expected to be arrested on the same charge later on Monday.

According to the arrest affidavit, police believe Modesto Vences-Garcia had planned the kidnapping for weeks, in order to get a reward or ransom from the family. Two of the suspects told police that Adrian Jaimes' father owed money to Vences-Garcia, identified as his cousin.

During a Monday morning news conference, police said the suspects told them during questioning they planned to ask for $150,000 in ransom.

But a family member told police they had received two calls the evening of the kidnapping, and the caller said they wanted $300,000 in ransom.

Police stated in the arrest warrant that Esau was taken into custody during his interview with police after he told detectives he would be "strapped" -- or armed -- when police came to arrest him.

APD Chief Art Acevedo said the public helped detectives solve the crime.

"A community that trusts its police department is a community that's safer," Acevedo said.

Meanwhile, the 9-11 call-taker who was under scrutiny after the boy's sister called to report the kidnapping retired Monday. The operator, who had been a call-taker for 22 years -- was criticized by some for his handling of the call.

Officials said police response was not delayed, but they plan to look at how call-takers are trained in sensitivity.

• Austin Police have charged five people, including two juveniles, with the Feb. 7 kidnapping of 5-year-old Adrian Jaimes, who was taken from outside his North Austin home but found that evening and returned to his family. Police say 26-year-old Modesto Vences-Garcia was the kidnappers' ringleader and that he allegedly spent several weeks planning the kidnapping (the initial target was Adrian's 10-year-old sister, Zuleima, police said). According to police, Vences-Garcia believed Adrian's father, Salvadore Hernandez, owed him money, and Vences-Garcia intended to hold the boy until the family paid up. APD Cmdr. Julie O'Brien said Vences-Garcia had told his associates he wanted the family to pay $150,000 in ransom, though police say he still hasn't explained exactly why he thought the Jaimes family owed him money. Vences-Garcia has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony that could net him up to life in prison. Reportedly, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforce*ment officers are also looking at Vences-Garcia for possible immigration violations. – Jordan Smith

Mexico’s surge in kidnapping has reached the Lone Star State, as an illegal alien and felon snatches a little boy:

Police say a man who thought his cousin owed him money was behind the abduction of the relative’s 5-year-old son.

Modesto Vences-Garcia, 26, was charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony. He could face up to life in prison, if convicted.

Investigators allege Vences-Garcia recruited four people, including two teens, to carry out the abduction of Adrian Jaimes.

Vences-Garcia was initially arrested on outstanding drug possession and drunken driving warrants. He also is accused of immigration violations.

Vences-Garcia — who also goes by at least a half-dozen other names — already has a rap sheet, including such accomplishments as drug possession, theft and drug dealing. Any chance we can keep him out of the country this time?
