AMW On The Scene--Possible Clues?http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff305/CozyNWarm/Tara%20Grinstead/tarah.jpg
Overview
Tara Grinstead was last seen on October 22, 2005.
Weeks before Tara's birthday, America's Most Wanted got the only on-camera interview with the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who said that the agency has interviewed a number of people and is reviewing the evidence they have. He added that they are still treating Grinstead's case as a missing person's, but are growing more concerned as the days go by.
AMW was in Ocilla, Ga. the first week of November to speak with Tara Grinstead's family and friends about the missing woman. Tara's sister, Anita Gattis, told an AMW producer that even though there were no signs that a struggle took place at Tara's home, a few things aroused her suspicions.
At her home, Ocilla Police Chief Billy Hancock said investigators found the clothes she was wearing the night she went missing, as well as her car and cell phone. Her purse and keys were missing. Family and friends say Tara never went anywhere without her cell phone.
There have also been reports that a latex glove was found on Tara's front lawn, which police say has been submitted to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for testing.
Anita told AMW that a clock Tara kept near her bed was found under the bed -- and the time was six hours off. She said that a broken lamp was tilted against a wall, which would've been unlike Tara, who Anita says is very meticulous.
Elements about Tara's car also bother Anita. The car was found in Tara's driveway with the doors unlocked--something that Tara never did. And according to Anita, the car seats were pushed too far back for Tara. Tara is only 5'3" and kept the seats much closer to the steering wheel. As strange as these things may seem, they haven't provided police with any information as to Tara's whereabouts or what may have happened to her.
Officials say they are considering the possibility that Grinstead, who lived alone, was abducted.
A Semi-Charmed Life
Overview
An AMW producer (R) speaks with Tara Grinstead's sister, Anita Gattis (L), inside the missing woman's home.http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff305/CozyNWarm/Tara%20Grinstead/walk-thru-still1.jpg
Witnesses say Tara attended the annual Sweet Potato Festival and beauty pageant on October 22 in Fitzgerald, Ga., and then went to a friend's house for dinner. Hancock says Tara said she was going straight home, but she hasn't been seen or heard from since.
Friends and family say they tried unsuccessfully to contact Grinstead the Sunday after she was last seen. When she didn't show up for work at Irwin County High School that Monday, co-workers contacted police and reported her missing. Students and co-workers say the 11th-grade teacher was popular at the school and that it was unlike her to not show up for work.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in the investigation and authorities say Grinstead's disappearance is being treated as a missing persons case. Officials say they are considering the possibility that Grinstead, who lived alone, was abducted.
There are also reports that Tara may have left town because she had been upset over her break-up with a man she dated for six years. Family and friends say Tara thought she would marry her former beau, but was heartbroken when their relationship ended late last year. Close friends say she recently found out that he had started dating a much younger woman.
Police have questioned the ex-boyfriend as well as a student who was recently arrested for harassing Tara when he was found trying to enter her home. Investigators have also questioned everyone who knows Tara and have conducted several searches, but still have no leads in the case.
Although many who knew her thought she had the perfect life, Tara's troubled relationship and the disturbing incident with her former student offered a telling glimpse into the young woman's personal life. While the GBI has no reason to believe that Tara met with foul play, they have not ruled it out.
Despite Few Clues, The Search Continues
Overview
Police, along with friends and family, have been circulating this flier in hopes of finding Tara.http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff305/CozyNWarm/Tara%20Grinstead/missingflier.jpg
Volunteers and officers from nearly a dozen nearby law enforcement agencies are assisting in the search for Tara, according to the Irwin County Sheriff's Office. A command center has been set up at the Irwin County Senior Center, where volunteers from all over the state along with Tara's co-workers, family, friends and students have been answering phones, distributing fliers and organizing searches.
More than $80,000 in collected donations is being offered to anyone with information leading to Grinstead's whereabouts.

My theory is that she came home from the BBQ, changed clothes, and someone picked her up as her house was locked, her purse and keys were missing, but her car was in the car port.
The question is, who did she go off with? And where is she?

I've always thought she came home from the BBQ, and someone followed her in the house(for whatever motive), and a struggle took place(hints the broken lamp, etc), then Tara's car was driven to wherever the suspect left her.

Thanks for starting a thread for Tara. I've been "searching" for Tara, and seeking justice for her ever since she disappeared more than 2 years ago.
I believe Tara was abducted from her bedroom, and either killed there or taken elsewhere and killed. I feel Tara's bedroom should have been viewed as a crime scene, given Tara's reputation for being a neat and orderly woman. I also feel her case should been viewed as foul play much sooner than it has been. Apparently, the school's principal must have believed this because LE was summoned to Tara's house when she neither showed up for class on Monday morning 10/24/05, nor called to say she would inordinately be absent that day. Tara's responsible nature and work ethic signaled something was very wrong.

Something happened to Tara in her bedroom as there are signs of a struggle though this is discounted for the most part. People entered who should not have been there and some of them are related to the main poi. Others, such as a neighbor and the principal of the school were concerned because they had not seen her. She should have been seen but wasn't.

In the very beginning, Dr. Goodwin mentioned that the footboard on Tara's bed was damaged indicating a struggle.

"It is assumed she was wearing black sweatpants and gray New Balance Tennis Shoes"
http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/vicap/grinstead_tara.pdf
If she had changed out of the outfit she had worn to the pageant and BBQ, came home, and was so tired (she did say to her neighbor that she was very tired and going to take a bath after doing the makeup for the pageant for her girls) she may not have put the shoes in the box and may have draped the clothes she was wearing over the chair after the BBQ, but when GRETA VAN SUSTEREN got there, the room was a mess! But a whole bunch of people had been in that house before the LE was called in!
And if she was in bed when she was attacked and got into what ever she usually wore to bed, why would the FBI put out a bulletin last seen clothing? Of course they used the words "assumed" But, who goes to bed in tennis shoes?
I've been following this case from day 1, lurched and not posted, because I am still totally in the dark! Admire and respect you who know all the tiny details, who was where and when! Hope to bounce off of you different theories!
I just KNOW the GBI and LE have one HUGE list of facts and not one little crumb leak out!
I don't live in Georgia! My interest in the case is that a girl who looks like my two daughters just a few years younger, is gone! POOF! And two years later, no body!
I will continue my quest for knowledge of what happened to Tara Grinstead and a resolve to find this Missing Person! She could be my daughter! Or Yours!

Hello everyone, I am from Irwin County and have been involved with the search for Tara from the beginning. I have talked with family, students and friends of Tara and she was/is a much loved young woman. A wonderful teacher that troubled students learned to love history from her teaching. One young man told me IF he had not had Miss Tara for a teacher he would have been in jail. He now has a full time job that he has had for two years. I could go on and on Tara is loved by her family, first and foremost believe that! These people are hurting her Dad and step Mom love her and are actively searching for her. He mother, who has been very sick throughout this ordeal, love and wants her daughter home. Her sister, brother in law and nephew love her and are very actively involved in the search for her. It is not for lack of love that Tara Faye Grinstead is missing.
I will say we are a very small rural county and our LE is not like the CSI shows you see on TV, but we have good officers that want Tara home. The GBI was called in immediately and I feel they are doing a good job. We would all like to have some update from LE and GBI but none have come forth so they must have a reason.
WE need help with Tara's case are I am afraid it will grow into an unsolved mystery and she deserves more. She deserves a resting place and her family deserves closure. He friends, students and those that have searched for her needs closure. And if there was a crime that person needs punishment, justice needs to be served.
But Tara if you are out there please know you would be welcomed back with love. I personally know your family would be there for you. And if Tara is with Our Lord, as I believe she is, We know He welcomed her with His Loving Arms.

Conflict mars search effort
By JD Sumner
OCILLA —
A weekend search for missing Irwin County teacher Tara Grinstead was marred by conflict after an incident between law enforcement and searchers.
On Saturday, nearly 30 searchers went out to an area around Green Road to search about 100 acres of land after search officials received a tip about a truck seen speeding down the road the night of Grinstead’s disappearance.
“We had permission of the land owners on that road to search the property out there to look for Tara,” search leader and Grinstead’s brother-in-law, Dr. Larry Gattis, said. “All of their permission except for one and that was the Harpers’.”
Marcus Harper, a former police officer, war veteran and reported boyfriend of Grinstead, has been the subject of gossip and rumor since the search began. It was his mother’s land near which the searchers were looking Saturday and it was she who called law enforcement.
“She called saying that she felt uncomfortable with all of the people out there,” Sheriff Donnie Youghn said. “So I told her I’d come out Sunday and make sure she wasn’t being harassed like she was saying.”
On Sunday the searchers returned to look primarily on the land of Betty Mixon, who said that an old house and well on her property hadn’t been searched yet and she thought they needed to check it out.
“I asked the fire chief, look, you got all this territory out here and you can show it to them and for right now it would be best not to drive out and around in front of that house,” Youghn said. “There were other ways that they could go to the search area.”
Ronnie Courson, a searcher, was looking for his aunt Sonya Popkin after she got separated from the group. He went down the road while Youghn was parked at Harper’s house.
“I came to the intersection of Green and Althea and looked behind me and only saw a bunch of dust. When the dust settled I saw the sheriff with his blue lights on so I pulled over and got off my four-wheeler,” Courson said.
Courson said that he walked up to the vehicle and was met with a hostile attitude and threats of jail time if he didn’t stay off the road.
“He told me that he would do whatever it takes to protect the Harpers,” Courson said.
Youghn has a different recollection.
“I told him that if y’all don’t mind, out of respect for me, I would appreciate it so much if y’all wouldn’t drive in front of that house,” Youghn said. “Mark knows all the territory and he’ll help you get around. And that was it.”
While the searchers were canvassing the area, they reported hearing gunshots — as many as a hundred over an hour period — near the Harper property.
Searchers also reportedly saw a person they said looked like Marcus Harper walking a large red dog and carrying a “AK-47” type rifle.
The friction between the searchers and law enforcement has threatened to further complicate an already complicated issue.
“I’ll tell you what,” Yaughn said. “If they’ll lie on me then about threatening to lock them up, and and they’ll lie about Marcus shooting the gun, then it makes you question in your mind what intentions they have,” Yaughn said.
“They’ll turn on you like a pit of rattlesnakes.”
Despite the conflict, Gattis said that there were several potential finds that could be helpful in the investigation, but wouldn’t elaborate because of the ongoing investigation.

I assume Chamber (as in Chamber of Commerce) President? If so, their primary concern is generating interest in local businesses. Inasmuch as membership is voluntary, I wonder which member business/es was/were suffering, and/or which principals' reputations were being destroyed, because Tara disappeared? Or was it the larger picture of the town's reputation, the Prez was concerned about?

I disagree with you. :eyebrow1qb: I've seen how some of the players in this case have been accused of murdering Tara or being in cahoots somehow when there's no indication a murder even took place.
I agree with the Chamber President...
Although the attention may help bring in tips on the case, some people in Ocilla think it's casting a shadow over the town.
On a regular basis, WALB has reported on the status of the search for Tara, showing you pictures of the missing teacher at every opportunity, as have many national outlets, but some people in Ocilla think national reports have been littered with speculation and unconfirmed rumors. Rumors that don't help Tara Grinstead's case, and may end up hurting many others.

I took Ms. McCranie's comments to be supportive of finding Tara, and at the same time, cautious of the media ruining peoples' reputations along the way. I can see where both goals are admirable. After all, all of the people whose skeletons have been revealed and encircled in salacious gossip and speculative accusations cannot all be guilty of harming Tara, if in fact she was harmed. As Priscilla mentioned, there is no known evidence of a crime in this case, even though the majority believe one occurred. But I certainly did not take Ms. McCranie's comment to mean she was more concerned with other people's reputations than locating Tara. IMO.

If Tara met with foul play, which is what LE believes happened, as per the FBI's VICAP alert, the GBI's comments, and local LE's as well, how does one go about "finding Tara" without looking at "those who did what to Tara"? This is how crimes are solved.
Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, and in that context, looking at "those who did what to Tara" will likely lead to "finding Tara", learning her fate, and obtaining justice, by holding the perp accountable.
Madam Prez appears to be more concerned about protecting the reputations of others, than finding Tara. Perhaps those reputations she seeks to protect are members, employees/former employees, of the Chamber of Commerce?

I'm sure Ms. McCranie's passing comment to WALB in March 2006 was not designed or in furtherance of her "protection" of Chamber of Commerce employees or business interests, but one never knows, I suppose. I'm sure Ms. McCranie has no problem with law enforcement looking at who did what to Tara; her comments, IMO, seemed to be pointed toward national media outlets and those appearing on same, as well as internet sleuths, perhaps, who speculate and theorize without facts to support their efforts.
I seriously do not see how this lady's comments can be scrutinized to such degree, especially to the point of speculating she could've been protecting someone. Perhaps my comprehension level is not as honed as others on such minutia and what can be read between the lines, per se. Until the case is cracked, I guess we won't know the true intentions of Ms. McCranie's commentary that day to WALB.

Glad to see that Tara has a forum here. . . praying that she will be found in 2008!
Tara is such a beautiful lady. She is intelligent and kind. Yes, there was a struggle in the bedroom. A table by the bed and a Chest of Drawers were wiped clean. Everything else seemed to be in tact. Tara had a lot of friends. She had a lot of men that admired her. I draw some suspicion to the fact that a neighbor had a set of keys to her house and her car. And, even after being warned by the police that the area was a crime scene, he removed the car, took it to a detailer and had it completely detailed, including steam cleaning the underside and placed it back under teh car port without telling anyone. The thing that gave it away was one of the Investigators noticed is was not parked the same way when they returned to the house. Not impounding the car by GBI was a SNAFU. The case can still be solved, but there are a few standing in the way. As for the local Police and Sheriff, you only get what you pay for in life. I have studied Tara very closely. She appears to have been a very kind and concerned young woman willing to help anyone. However, it is someone close to Tara that has caused her demise. Tara had dated a number of Police Officers. You can't have local cops investigating local cops. Even the GBI Lead Investigator is friends with the cops Tara dated. God Bless you Tara!

Were you ever inside Tara's bedroom to verify this information? I have never heard it before, or seen it in print, and it is interesting. What do you mean by "wiped clean"? Do you believe the array of items in the pics taken by FOX News were put there after the "wiping" took place? Why would the dresser near the bedroom door need to be wiped clean? It was covered in decor and jewelry, IIRC.
What L/E "warned" Mr. Portier that the home was a "crime scene"? I have always understood that the GBI left the home and vehicle to the family after processing was finished early Tuesday morning. How did he place the car back under the carport "without telling anyone"? I believe he took the car, with the family's permission, to the carwash in plain sight, during the timeframe there were swarms of people at Tara's home and on the streets of Ocilla.
Thank you for posting your thoughts, although I disagree with most of them without further support or verification on your end.

I disagree that the neighbor removed Tara's car without instructions or an ok from someone closer to the case/Tara that he. Furthermore if this was a problem for the investigator he should never have left the car sitting under the carport unsecured to begin with. Irwin County may not have all the luxuries bigger cities do but a Tow Truck is not one of the things lacking and neither is a lock and key for the house left unsecured. Many things the GBI did that day were as you described SNAFU. BTW I’m not a goody two shoes but I don’t like the F word.
The case is being investigated by the GBI who were called in because local people were close to Tara and you start an investigation with people close to a possible victim. The GBI came in and treated the case as a run away on day one. What the local law enforcement is paid don't have a thing to do with how this case was/is investigated by the GBI. I'm sure all good cops are underpaid and as in the every occupation some are not worth what they are paid but I'm going to bat for the Ocilla Chief of Police Billy Hancock. You won't find a better cop no matter what they are paid. Since the GBI is the lead investigators are you saying someone in their department is standing in the way? Also which lead investigator is a friend with which "cops" Tara was dating. Who besides HD was a paid cop that Tara was dating.
DT was the lead investigator but the last I knew he lost his job because of a DUI. DT is said to have been close friends with HD the cop from Perry Tara was dating and the only person who has been id'd being at Tara's the week-end she disappeared. Approx 90 miles away from Perry.
Who wiped the furniture clean and when? There has been no evidence that anything was out of order on the dresser to suggest a struggle in the bedroom so why would there be a need to wipe it clean. You need to furnish more information before I buy into what you posted.

I want to add, I think washing the car should not have happened period. Maybe the reason it was washed is an innocent one or maybe it isn't I don't know. I strongly believe more than the neighbor was involved with the decision to wash it. I'm not smart enough to explain it but I do understand what ButterFlyDragon explained about the data of the recent trips by the car being destroyed by moving the car and taking it to the car wash. To make it simple the information on at least the last two trips made by Tara's car was replaced by the trip to the car wash and the trip back. If the car was started and moved that data replaced the stored data. This kind of devise only stores a certain amount of data if Tara's car had the devise capable of doing this. It's too late to cry over spilled milk but I sure would like to know why the glass was left sitting under the car port for someone to knock it over.

Suspect to be questioned about Grinstead case
http://www.albanyherald.com/stories/20080112n6.htm
GBI Special-Agent-in-Charge Gary Rothwell said Friday that his office is interested in speaking with agents working the murder of 24-year-old Meredith Emerson, who was found dead after going for a hike in the North Georgia mountains. They say they’re doubtful that the suspect, Gary Michael Hilton, had any involvement.
The 61-year-old Hilton has been charged with malice murder and is being held in Dawson County. Leon County, Fla., authorities said Friday they intend to charge Hilton with the murder of 46-year-old Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, who was found dead in the Apalachicola National Forest.
Hilton may also be charged in connection with the deaths of a couple in North Carolina.
But Rothwell said that investigators are eager to chat with agents in Buford about any possible link between Hilton and missing Ocilla teacher Tara Grinstead, who vanished in October 2005 after a beauty pageant.
“The agent in charge of the investigation up there is very familiar with the Grinstead investigation, and so we’re interested in talking with them about the case,” Rothwell said. “But initial indications, at least the published reports, would suggest that what happened to the hiker and what happened in the Grinstead case are different in many ways and probably aren’t connected.”
Hilton, a former contractor in the Atlanta area, pointed police to Emerson’s body, which was found decapitated in a wooded area in Dawson County. Preliminary autopsy results show that Emerson was bludgeoned to death.
Without going into detail, Rothwell said that the methods used to kidnap and kill Emerson and Dunlap don’t mesh with the facts of the Grinstead investigation.
While the two victims Hilton is suspected of murdering were apparently abducted and killed in wooded areas, Grinstead was last seen at her home in Ocilla after a local beauty pageant.
“Right now, every law enforcement agency in the three-state area with open missing persons investigations are calling for information about him,” Rothwell said. “We’re just one of the ones in line.”
Rothwell said the investigation is still open in the disappearance of the former beauty queen and said that it will be until she’s found.
“I’m not retiring until we find her,” Rothwell said.

The murder of Meredith Emerson, the disappearance of Cayle Bywater and other, possibly related cases involving missing women have renewed interest in the case of another missing Georgia woman. Tara Grinstead, a beauty pageant winner who earned her Masters degree and was working on her doctorate while she taught history at Irwin County High, went missing from her home in Ocilla the night of Oct. 22, 2005.
Her ex-boyfriend, Iraq War veteran and former Ocilla police officer Marcus Harper, and several other people have been investigated in the disappearance.
After Harper and Grinstead broke up, she apparently found that Harper, then 30, was dating an 18-year-old. Her sister, Anita Gattis, told the nation during a “CBS Early Show” interview days after her sister’s disappearance that she had been told that Harper and Grinstead had a “very heated argument.”
Suspicion around Marcus Harper continued to expand after a tip came in that on the night Grinstead disappeared, a truck had been seen speeding down Green Road, a rural route located south of Ocilla. In and of itself, this information would have hardly been useful, but Marcus Harper’s mother lived on Green Road, and the tip prompted the organization a volunteer search party, which began combing a 100 acre area along the road in March of 2006.
Things went a bit awry, however, after Harper’s mother, the sole landowner along the Green Road area who had not given permission to have her land searched, called the sheriff, complaining that she was being harassed by searchers. The sheriff came to the Harper property and reportedly threatened to lock up at least one member of the search party if they didn’t stay away from Mrs. Harper’s land.
Although Harper has been the focus of most media attention and some law enforcement scrutiny, he has an alibi for his whereabouts around the time Tara Grinstead went missing and he wasn’t the only person Grinstead knew who came under a cloud of suspicion following her disappearance: Some reports linked her with a married law enforcement officer in another town. At least two of her students had tried to create relationships with Grinstead at Irwin County High. Anthony Vickers, a former student of Grinstead’s, had been arrested after he was found at her house one night. He was investigated, and his parents’ property searched, but nothing was found. Another student, who remained unnamed, had been removed from her class after police found he was responsible for a series of threatening phone calls to Grinstead.
The trail appears to have grown cold over the last two years, but Tara Grinstead’s family continues to hope for her safe return. For more information, visit www.findtara.com. If you have any information on the whereabouts of Tara Grinstead, please call the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at 478-987-4545.

It saddens me to realize how many people have simply disappeared, most of whom were likely the victims of foul play.
While it brought tears to my eyes, and pain in my heart, to view the gallery of photos of the missing, along with its accompanying haunting song, I am thankful for earth angels like you, who have taken such a proactive role to Help Find The Missing.
God bless you for the wonderful work you do! :1222423:
Wow, Hey Paula. You said it all here. It is worthy of repeating so forgive me for bumping an old post.
I am new to posting here but have followed this case in the media. You pay tribute to Tara and all the missing while paying tribute to the HFTM heroes. Thanks to you all for the efforts,:love0081:

What are the chances the latex glove was planted ?
Perhaps someone had an unsuspecting person 'wear' the glove in order to 'plant' it at the crime scene.

If you have information on Tara's case I would suggest going directly to the GBI. You can also email the family on the www.missingtara.com site. Here is the number for the GBI 478-987-4545.
If you are speaking about the non-family sanctioned site and you haven't been approved to post there, consider it a blessing.
Why not post it here? Unless you feel it is too sensitive to post publicly and then I would go directly to the GBI.

PS........I'm sorry to read about the passing of the mother....i lit a candle, to express my sympathy.......Goodbye.

I really feel that we should support those who 'feel' things or get insights. I wish more psychics would come forward and share anything that they get.thakyou for responding , and i did post something......right before your reply...but to add on to it, i just have never seen Tara being ad-ducted from the house,...........even though, the press releases, and the police responses about the case would indicate other wise..i never seen or felt that.........what i interprete has always been away from the house, going down the road as i mentioned before........or a indication, on which way she left, from the house perhaps.......but it was night, cool night, but not cold.....and i always have felt from what i have seen the glove found has no meaning, for i'm not getting any meaning from it.......other then its just a glove that ended up there somehow someway......the same as we finding ourselves strange things in our yards, from time to time.....................but anything that seems strange, with a message attached, such as a newspaper etc....one should at least glance at, and read......perhaps there's a meaning in it for you
when Tara became missing, did she have long straight hair, such as being straightened??......for that is one i am seeing, now as i type ;this............i don't feel right now, it was random, her coming up missing............someone perhaps she knew indirectly......or had some communication with ............i know, not all has Ben released, to the public.....to prevent some from claiming to know or have information etc...........which is common......
i know not for sure, but was her bedroom light on, a desk lamp.........for that is what I'm seeing now...............a small lamp, on in the corner of a room, it is night still...........and i believe it is the bedroom............but a hall light perhaps.........................i feel the-res were left on, to have it seem one was home...........and not as some have thought, that they were turned on before or during an abduction......................after all this time, no.....i do not feel that Tara simple left on her own.....to start again somewhere................the passing of the mother at this time has saddened me............for the not knowing, broke her heart even more.....though she tried, the best she could, to remain strong and firm for those around her...........but in her quite times, alone times, it was quite painful, as one can imagine.....as i see her setting, and looking out a window on those times,.....gazing to the outside, and wondering in her thoughts the what and where Tara....................
...............i still feel she went to the left, from standing in front of the house, on the same side.................
.......i would look that way from house.....i would on a bicycle, and look and listen.......look for an off road path............one for motor bikes, small ones.........a path to the left of the house, and then the path would have one turn to the left from the road.......perhaps over a hill..............................i always felt she still close by.....and not taken far far away......................
thanks again for responding, and i hope there's something there, that may help now..........Goodbye...........
and keeping within the guidelines of this board, all the above JMO.....and nothing factual as far as i can tell...........

There is a man who fits the description of the one you are describing. He was at the theater at the pageant that night. However, he has been cleared by the GBI. Missing beauty queen was mending broken heart
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Tara Grinstead, a 30-year-old schoolteacher and former beauty queen, attended a Saturday night beauty pageant and then left a dinner party, telling friends she was going straight home. She has not been seen since that night -- October 22, 2005.
Friends and family called Grinstead the next day, but couldn't reach her.
The following Monday, when she did not show up for work at Irwin County High School, co-workers called police and reported her missing.
When police arrived at her home in Ocilla, Georgia, they found the clothes she wore Saturday night piled on her bedroom floor. Her cell phone was charging in the wall outlet, and her car was parked in the driveway.
Her purse and keys were missing.
A latex glove found in Grinstead's front lawn was sent to a laboratory for DNA testing. The results were inconclusive.
Grinstead's family says she was a very tidy person and would never leave her clothes on the floor. They said she never went anywhere without her cell phone.
They found it strange that her car doors were unlocked and that her car seat was pushed back way too far for someone her size. She was petite -- 5 feet, 3 inches tall -- and typically kept the seat much closer to the steering wheel.
Also strange: An envelope full of cash was found on her dashboard, and her dog and cat were abandoned. Neither police nor family could say where the money came from or whether it belonged to Grinstead, and her sister and friends say Grinstead was an animal lover who wouldn't leave her pets without making arrangements for them.
The house showed no signs of a break-in or struggle, but Grinstead's bedside clock was found under her bed, and the time it displayed was six hours off. A lamp that was broken into two pieces was propped against the wall on her nightstand.
Co-workers and students at Irwin County High say the 11th-grade teacher was well-liked. She always seemed to be happy and appeared to lead a charmed life. She was beautiful, popular, dedicated and determined.
She was applying for a doctoral program in history and making plans for a very bright future, said her sister Anita Gattis.
But there were hints of trouble in her personal life. Grinstead's boyfriend of six years left her broken-hearted a year before, but had returned to town just a few weeks before she disappeared.
He was dating a much younger woman but continued to call Grinstead. The former couple had argued a week before her disappearance, Grinstead's sister said.
Then there was Grinstead's young former student, who claimed to have had an affair with her. Police records show that she had him arrested for coming to her house and harassing her. Later, those charges were dropped.
And Grinstead had lodged a complaint with the police department against one of its officers. The officer was friendly with her former boyfriend, and on the night Grinstead disappeared, the two men were seen together in his patrol car, on what is known in police circles as a "ride-along."
Police characterize their investigation as a missing-person case. Investigators are not ruling out the possibility of foul play, but without more evidence, they say it is also quite possible that Grinstead may have just walked away from all the drama in her personal life.
Grinstead's family and friends insist she is not the kind of person to go off on her own without being in touch with her family. They emphasize that the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are highly of out of character for her. They are certain she was abducted.
Police have not named any suspects but continue to hope for tips that could help their investigation. The total reward offered is $200,000 -- $100,000 for Grinstead's safe return and $100,000 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for abducting her. To report a tip, call 229-468-TIPS.

"We have some cadaver dogs in the search, including water cadaver dogs," he says, "and we had four dogs alert on a spot in Georgia that we'd gotten a lead on. This house out in the country had caught on fire a few days after Tara had disappeared, and the fire was from arson. There was a small lake on the property and the dogs all alerted on an area at that lake." So he set his team to work to search it.
I wish TES could go back and work that site again. Something was there.

Man claims online that he’s a serial killer online
Feb. 13, 2009
The Orlando Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of investigation are trying to find a man who online claims to be a serial killer and that Jennifer Kesse may be one of his victims. Kesse was has been missing for three years. She was last seen at her condo near the mall at Millenia.
The investigation into this self proclaims serial killer all started here with a message on Jennifer Kesse's you tube page. It reads "maybe I can help” written by Catchmekiller. Click his name and you'll be linked to a page titled "serial killer confession". A man who's blurred his face and distorted his voice. "I've decided to confess a few things," says the catchmekiller.
Catchmekiller wants thousands of people to play his game. He claims he's murdered 16 people over the last 8 years and wants to lead those who play his games to the bodies one by one. "Whenever one body is found...another clue is on and gives you one small step closer to who I am and where I am," the man claims.
In a phone interview today Drew Kesse, Jennifer's father, told FOX he's disgusted. "To me you just can't hardly get any lower than this."
While Drew Kesse thinks this is a cruel joke, there's a chance its not. "You've got to take it seriously until you can prove it any different."
Drew Kesse posted a message for catchmekiller on Jennifer's site "talk is very cheap, explain yourself, either you know something or you don’t which is it and why post here." And, Drew Kesse has a challenge for this self proclaimed serial killer, "Give some family an exact information that no one knows...an exact place...where one of these 16 is located...then we'll know you're real...we'll know this is not a game we're onto something." And until then, "Catch me killer on you tube, you really have no guts. Whoever you are come out. Be a man, cause you're not a man. You're nothing more than a punk," said Drew Kesse.
Jennifer Kesse's case has with been compared with Tara Grinstaed's case. Grinstead is a 32 year old woman missing Georgia woman. Catch me killer's first clue is on the Georgia woman's disappearance. He claims to have slit her throat. While catch me killer did not show his face. It obvious he's a white male. He has distinctive spikey hair, a goatee, and he's wearing a wedding ring.

Serial killer responsible for Grinstead disappearance?
Posted: March 6, 2009 11:06 PM
Updated: March 6, 2009 11:06 PM
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - In an online video, a man claiming to be a serial killer, says he was involved in the disappearance of school teacher Tara Grinstead. He calls himself CatchMeKiller.
He claims to have killed 16 people, including missing Irwin County teacher Tara Grinstead who disappeared October 22nd, 2005. In the video, which has since been removed, he says he'll reveal clues that will lead to the bodies one by one.

:thud2: I don't know why but I was just shocked to read this information!
You just never know what "crazy people" are out there in the world. I sure hope officials are able to run down the person that made all these claims on the video.
Right now I just don't know what to think about this being a possibility. For some reason I want to think it is a prank. Horrible.
Prayers for Tara and prayers for Tara's family.

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It's been more than three years since Ocilla school teacher Tara Grinstead vanished. Theories about what happened to her abound. And now, a man has posted a video on the Internet claiming responsibility for her disappearance.
In the video, he claimed to be a serial killer; even though he's since said it was a just a game, the GBI is still checking him out.
His face is blurred, his voice distorted, yet his message is clear. "If you want to play the game you'll find everything you want to find. All the clues will be right there you just have to play the game."
"Catchmekiller", as the man in this video calls himself, wants to play a game, giving clues that he says will lead to the bodies of the 16 people he claims to have murdered.
"In the middle of the second wet spot, you'll find your second clue," he said.
"It was just a horrible, horrible thing for him to do and the way that he did it, just so graphic in his details," said Anita Gattis, Tara Grinstead's big sister.
She says "catchmekiller" makes her sick, but some of his clues also intrigue her... like one involving a ring. "He did have some interesting details to me, because there is a ring missing of Tara's and that's not something, I don't think, was public knowledge."
So is "catchmekiller" responsible for Tara Grinstead's disappearance? When asked, "Do you think he killed Tara?" Gattis replied, "No I don't."
Rather, Gattis believes Tara died at the hands of someone she knew. "I don't think he had anything to do with this, but this is someone's family that this guy's screwing around with. This is not just some obscure game as he's wanting to call it."
And the search for Tara isn't over. Gattis says she won't stop looking until she finds Tara. She said, "I don't know that there's ever going to be closure because of the horrendous act that's happened, but we want answers and we definitely need accountability for someone that's done this. We definitely want her found and we want to know who did it and what happened."
And even though she doesn't believe "catchmekiller" is responsible for her sister's death, she wants him held accountable for his actions too, and his game, brought to an end.
After a report of the Catchmekiller aired in Orlando, the man posting videos called that TV station and told them it was a murder mystery clue game and that he's never killed anyone.
That hasn't stopped law enforcement agencies in at least two states from following up on him though. They are investigating to find out if Catchmekiller is a psychopath or if he's just got a twisted sense of humor.

Thank you for the update on this nut. Even though I too believe the person responsible knew Tara, I hope LE checks this guy out thoroughly!
Interesting about the ring however. Maybe he heard it from the locals that were aware of the ring missing. ummm
Sure wish there were some answers in Tara's case.

OK, I am a criminal defence attorney in Philadelphia who has stumbled upon this case. My profession gives me some expertise in murder cases.
Most murder victims know their killers. It is quite rare for a stranger to kill another stranger. Additionally, most women are victims of lovers or former lovers.
So while Ms. Grinstead was very popular, for some reason no one can find her killer. Also, I have heard rumours that people who investigate her disappearance receive death threats. While there has been quite a bit of interest in this case, there has been little progress
In this case this seems almost certain as the clues to her disappearance seem noticable only to those who know her well. Which gets to the bedside table being wiped. One thing one deals with in criminal defence work is chain of custody and who could have contaminated the crime scene. Whether the table was wiped actually or just by the lack of LEOs securing the crime scene isn't the point--there was probably evidence there that wasn't when the investigators needed to find it.
I am seeing loads of flags that the possible perpetrator had some connection to Law enforcement such as the fact that GBI was called in early on, another person commented that latex gloves are commonly carried by police, and other things I can't put my finger on. Actually, it seems weird to me that Marcus was on a ride along that night: especially after he had been drinking with friends early on.
I betcha the radio tapes for that night are missing, which is something that has been bugging me. But the lack of police radio tapes really bugs me now that I was transcribing an incident for another lawyer where the cops were beating someone.
I am disappointed that the forensic expert failed to find anything new in the case, although most avenues are pretty much looked into. Again, I think that points to someone in law enforcement who would have an idea of what to "sterilise" at a crime scene. Or some one "sterilised" the crime scene which is part of the crime was only obvious to those who knew her.
I find it interesting that Marcus's mom has a large landholding outside of Ocilla.
The worst part about this was that after first learning about this case, I had a nightmare about Tara. I know it was bad enough that I forgot it.
Anyway, I didn't know at that time that her mother had died since her "disappearance". That is yet another clue that something is amiss. She would have come out of "hiding" if she were around. Also, someone would have found her.
Any possibility of her being mentally ill, yet not "found" seem beyond the pale.
So after all this blather, I wish I could be more helpful, but I think that the clue we need is kept hidden or has been destroyed. Unless this information surfaces, this case will remain a dead end. I also think there are red herrings out there.
Somone said that there were "competing" websites run by someone close to one of the suspects. That came up here as well.
I wish we could find a resolution to this case.

It seems that the radio tapes were not checked from one source I asked (or possibly even saved).
Now, I am curious as to why the one police officer from out of town kept trying to get in contact with Tara. Did he hear something via radio that made him wonder for her safety?
It's a convenient alibi to say one was on a ride along, yet any activity is logged and there is also the radio traffic.
I believe I heard something about a searcher being chased from the Vernon farm by someone who looked like Marcus.
Doesn't Dr. Godwin also profile possible locations where the body could be found? I don't know if anyone has said where the possible location of the body.
Another question I have would be wasn't Marcus a local to Ocilla where Tara was from another town? In fact, doesn't Marcus's family have extensive landholdings in Ocilla?
Perhaps, the investigation should be handled by something other than a Georgia agency.
Also, the lack of a body is not a hinderance to prosecution for murder as the Anne Marie Fahey case shows.
I will put a good guess that someone who has a connection to this case watches these boards for activity.
Another thing I found out (forgive me as I am a newbie) is that Faye Grinstead died of cancer. I am not sure when the onset occurred, but I am dead certain that Tara would have surfaced had she known that he mother was dying.

Catch me killer indicted

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - He made horrifying threats, claiming to have killed 16 people. He also boasted he might know something about the disappearance of Jennifer kesse. Now, the so-called "catch me killer" gets his wish. He's caught, but probably not the way he wanted. Cops nabbed him and now, he's just been indicted.
On Tuesday a grand jury in Gainesville, Georgia indicted the "catch me killer" on two charges, none of which include murder.
Andrew Scott Haley was indicted for tampering with evidence and false statements.
“To let his behavior go without any consequences is I don't think is right,” said Gary Rothwell from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The charges after catch me killer posted a video on You Tube called “Confessions of a serial killer.” On it he claimed he killed missing Georgia girl Tara Grinstead. He also claimed he was responsible for the death of 16 people and said he was going to kill again.
The website flagged by Jennifer Kesse’s dad Drew when catchmekiller posted it on a site for his missing daughter. His reaction to the You Tube post? “To me you just can't hardly get any lower than this.”
Investigators found that all Haleys claims were a hoax but investigators aren’t laughing. “We certainly hope is a deterrent for people who think it's funny to take credit for crimes on the internet and all the disruption it causes in people's lives,” said Rothwell.
Florida has strict laws against internet hoaxes. Georgia does not have those laws but since it was a Florida site the jury found case for the indictment. Rothwell says that credit really goes to the district attorney who would not let case drop.

Gainesville man indicted in Internet serial-killer hoax
By RHONDA COOK
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Wednesday, July 01, 2009
A Gainesville man who called himself the “catch me killer” has been charged with making false claims that he killed 16 people and was responsible for the disappearance of an Oscilla woman.
“We had to spend hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars just to run this guy down,” said Gary Rothwell, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent in charge in Perry.
Andrew Scott Haley was indicted Tuesday in Hall County for tampering with evidence and making false statements, the only felonies in Georgia law that covers the crime he is accused of committing.
The investigation started in February when the father of another missing woman saw a video posted on the internet site You Tube.
The video shows a man, believed to be Haley, with his face concealed and his voice distorted as he explained his “game.” The man claims he had killed 16 people and would kill another if law enforcement tried to fiind him.
The GBI’s Rothwell said in thier investigation they discoved to videos believed to have been made and posted by Haley.
The two videos made a specific references to Oscilla school teacher Tara Grinstead, who was last seen on Oct. 22, 2006. A link to one of the videos — “Confessions of a serial killer” — had been put on a website created by the father of an Orlando woman who has been missing three years, and he called police.
“To me you just can’t hardly get any lower than this,” Drew Kesse told an Orlando television station.
Jennifer Kesse, 24, disappeared from her condominium on Jan. 24, 2006. Florida authorities believe Kesse was the victim of a random crime.
“He had a game he wanted to play on the internet,” Rothwell said of Haley. “He would provide clues [concerning the people he claimed he killed] and whoever was able to follow his clues would ultimately learn his identification. The first clue clearly regarded Tara Grinstead.”
Grinstead, a popular 30-year-old high school teacher and beauty queen, vanished on Oct. 22, 2005. On that day, she helped contestants get ready for the Miss Sweet Potato Pageant in Fitzgerald in south Georgia before she joined friends at a barbecue. The friends said she went home around 11 p.m.
Grinstead was reported missing two days later because she did not report for work. Police found her cellphone at her house and her unlocked car in the driveway, but her purse and keys were gone. They believe she was a victim of someone she knew.
Rothwell said the first video included details about Grinstead — that she was a teacher and a beauty queen. A second video “gave details about the whereabouts of a ring and a hand somewhere near Augusta,” Rothwell said.
“It caused a lot of heartache for the two families,” Rothwell said. “We had this guy mocking them on the internet.”
Police say they do not know what prompted Haley to make the claim to be a serie killer. They don’t beleive he was involved in any homicides.

Here is a copy of the indictment filed against this sick guy:
http://media.morristechnology.com/mediafilesvr/upload/gainesville/article/0702INDICTdoc.pdf
Also, I found this "comment" he (allegedly) made on an online newspaper article about his alleged crimes:
Andrew Scott Haley says -
what ever happened to free speech and freedom of the press? no names were ever mentioned in my video, and it was only a game...it says so all through the video people believe what they want and watch and believe way to many movies. follow the leader. sooner or later we will all be saying god save the queen instead of god bless america. freedom is a right... and i will fight to protect that.
Unbelievable! I hope he gets punished for his arrogance and stupidity.

Blairsville case puts highlight on other missing persons
Connie Grinstead should be happy to have more tips coming in to help find her missing stepdaughter, but all she can do is cry and pray
The hunt for a missing Blairsville mom Kristi Cornwell has spawned more tips to come in for Tara Grinstead, a south Georgia teacher who was reported missing almost four years ago.
“It is not a cold case. A tip came in as recently as last week,” Connie Grinstead said Tuesday. “I still get phone calls. It’s amazing to me that people have not forgotten.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has spent the past two weeks searching for Cornwell, who was reportedly abducted while walking near her parents’ Blairsville home. The search for Cornwell, a 38-year-old former probation officer, has captured media attention across the nation.
While the Cornwell case has brought in a few hundred tips, the Grinstead mystery has attracted thousands of tips and remains the GBI’s largest case file. Grinstead has garnered more tips than other case in the GBI’s history, Special Agent Gary Rothwell said.
“It’s the darndest case I’ve ever seen,” said Rothwell, a GBI agent for 28 years. “We get information on that case all the time, just not information that is leading us anywhere. Typically with a case like this - even high profile cases - information diminishes. But we get information on the Grinstead case all the time.”
As of Tuesday, there were 421 women over the age of 18 missing in Georgia, according to GBI spokesman John Bankhead. The majority of the cases have turned “cold,” leaving investigators and families at a standstill.
For investigators, it means an open case file, random emails from psychics claiming to have the answer and having to let down family members.
For Connie Grinstead, not knowing what happened to her stepdaughter is harder than having to say goodbye at a funeral.
“We already lost her, but add on top of that we don’t even know what happened to her,” said Grinstead, of Birmingham. “You are still stuck in time, sitting on fence and can’t get off on either side because you don’t know.”
Tara Grinstead was a 30-year-old high school history teacher and former beauty queen. She was last seen Oct. 22, 2005 at a cookout about six blocks from her Ocilla home in south central Georgia.
She got a call on her cell phone and left. She didn’t show up at work the next day and her family has not heard from her, Rothwell said.
Grinstead’s cell phone, dog and cat were left in her house and there were no signs of a struggle. But her purse and car keys were gone, despite her car still sitting in the driveway, Rothwell said.
A cell phone call is also the last contact investigators have for Cornwell, who was talking to her boyfriend Douglas Davis in Atlanta when she was reportedly abducted.
Douglas told investigators Cornwell complained a car was following her. He then heard signs of struggle and Cornwell say “don’t take me,” Davis said.
Investigators have combed sections of three states, interviewed sex offenders and reviewed hundreds of tips in the Cornwell case, but received no “significant” leads, Bankhead said Tuesday.
This week, U.S. Marshals spent two days traipsing through woods in North Carolina after Fox’s “America’s Most Wanted” received a tip following Cornwell’s family’s appearance on the show.
“We didn’t think [the tip] was reliable from the beginning,” Bankhead said Tuesday. “But we’re checking into everything. You have to.”
The GBI said it prioritizes each tip based on the information, the caller’s knowledge of the individual and investigators’ ability to check it out.
Much of the time, the number of tips depends on the amount of media attention a case receives. The Grinstead case appeared on CBS’ “48 Hours,” along with regional media.
“You got cases in Atlanta that don’t receive that kind of attention,” Bankhead said. “We don’t make the decision about the media. We prioritize leads, not cases.”
In the majority of missing person’s cases, the victim usually knows their attackers, Bankhead said.
While the possibility a missing person simply left without telling anyone always exists, the GBI said in each of the cases they investigate it appears a crime occurred. Last year, the GBI went through all missing person cases in its files and trimmed the list by about 100 women who had returned on their own, Bankhead said.
Despite some cases growing cold, the GBI said it never assumes a person is dead until they find the individual.
In some cases, tips come out of nowhere like when a caller said Mary Shotwell Little, a newlywed reportedly abducted from a Buckhead parking lot in 1965, was under a garage floor in Forsyth County. The tip came in 30 years after the woman went missing. Agents dug up the floor, but found nothing, Bankhead said.
Little remains on the GBI’s list, a list that Connie Grinstead reviews frequently.
“Until we find her, we can not totally shut the door on hope,” Grinstead said about her stepdaughter. “When I saw the Kristi Cornwell story, I felt sick to my stomach because I know what is ahead for that family. I know they are just beginning that journey.”
Grinstead said she lights a candle on a Web site for her missing stepdaughter and posts a message each morning. She said she wants the Cornwell family to know that tiny steps like that help.
“If you start to think about what ifs, all the maybes and possibilities, the pain becomes unbearable,” she said. “Somebody may have taken our loved ones, but they can never take our precious memories of them. They are ours forever.”
