Police believe a 4-year-old boy taken from his northeast Minneapolis home Wednesday night is not in immediate danger, but haven't identified a motive by the woman suspected of taking him.

Police are looking for Lashawn Barbara Kreighbaum, also known as Shawna Williams, 25, who may have taken Demond Keith Reed from 3118 Morgan Av. N., where he was under a baby sitter's care.

Kreighbaum, who is from Illinois but may be living at several Minneapolis addresses, is an acquaintance of the boy's baby sitter and mother, said Sgt. Mark Sauer of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Demond was last seen wearing SpongeBob SquarePants pajamas. Kreighbaum was last seen wearing a red leather coat, blue jeans, white shoes and white mittens.

She has a tattoo that says "SHAWN" on her arm and a small stud nose ring. She may be driving a Ford Taurus with license plate number EUC 181.

No Amber Alert has been issued because there is probably no immediate concern for the boy's safety, Sauer said.

He wouldn't say why Kreighbaum may have taken Demond.

"We have some speculation and leads, but we don't have anything confirmatory," he said. We'd like to be able to talk to her and find out exactly what happened, but we don't believe he's in danger."

Police discover body of missing 4-year-old boy; cousin arrested
The Associated Press - Monday, February 11, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS
Police on Sunday said they found the body of a 4-year-old boy at the north Minneapolis home where he was staying when he was reported missing last Wednesday, and arrested a woman in the case.

The woman was not immediately charged. TV news reports said she was an adult cousin who had been caring for the boy, Demond Reed.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office was trying to determine how and when Demond died, but police said they were investigating it as a homicide.

"He was so sweet," his grandmother, Charmon Brown, told KSTP-TV. "He was a sweet little baby."

Demond came to Minneapolis from Chicago for a visit, but his father was arrested Jan. 21 on an unrelated matter so the boy was left in the custody of the cousin.

Brown told KSTP she had trusted the cousin to take care of Demond, but that the cousin had hurt the boy and would not admit it at first.

The grandmother told the station she realized something was wrong when the boy disappeared Wednesday and the cousin couldn't tell a straight story about what happened.

At first, Brown said, the cousin said Demond had walked out the back door and disappeared. Her second story, Brown said, was that she brought the boy to a hospital because he was having an asthma attack, and that a friend of hers kidnapped him there.

"And then she asked me to pray for her," Brown said. "It was amazing, because I felt that something was wrong."

KSTP said the cousin is a mother of five children, who were put in protective custody.

The investigation continued into the circumstances surrounding his death.

"A lot of the details in this case have been fairly unclear," said Sgt. William Palmer, a police spokesman.

When Demond disappeared, it was reported that he had been taken from the home by a family acquaintance, but it was unclear Sunday whether the boy had actually left the home.

The murkiness was one of the reasons the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension did not issue an Amber Alert for Demond when he first went missing. The BCA said there weren't enough details available, such as a license plate or a description of the person he left with, to warrant an alert.

Woman held after 4-year-old is discovered in North Minneapolis home

DEMOND KEITH REED

A 37-year-old woman is behind bars in connection with the apparent homicide of 4-year-old Demond Keith Reed, who had been missing since last week and was found dead Sunday inside a North Minneapolis home.

Homicide investigators found Demond, of Chicago, at 3118 Morgan Ave. N., where he had been staying with a "distant relative," Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer said. Police are investigating the death as a homicide, the city's first in 2008, he said.

"It's been a tough morning for everyone on this case," Palmer said Sunday.

Carla Cherisse Poole is being held in the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause of murder, Palmer said.

Poole was booked into the jail at 2:13 a.m., according to the jail roster. Police have 36 hours to formally charge her or she can be released.

"The investigators are trying to put together the case and get her charged," Palmer said.

Palmer said he did not know Poole's relation to the boy. But in an interview last week with KARE-11 after the boy disappeared, Poole said she was the boy's cousin and he had been staying with her since December.

"I want him back, that's all I want," Poole told KARE-11.

Demond was reported missing from the Morgan Avenue home Wednesday, and early reports were that a female friend of someone inside the home took him. He was last seen wearing SpongeBob SquarePants pajamas, a navy blue winter coat and black boots.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension decided against issuing an
Amber Alert, Palmer said.

"It's a tool that can be used," he said, "but they didn't go that route after they considered the circumstances. It was their decision."

On Friday, investigators searched the house for the boy, he said. Palmer was not sure where in the house the boy's body was found.

The boy recently came to the Twin Cities with his father, Tony Reed, who has since been arrested on an unrelated charge, Palmer said.

"I believe he is in the Hennepin County Workhouse," he said.

After the boy's disappearance, the mother came to the Twin Cities from Chicago, he said.

An autopsy will be performed today by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police: Woman fatally beat boy, 4, because he soiled his pants
BY DAVID HANNERS
Pioneer Press
Article Last Updated: 02/12/2008 11:25:52 AM CST

A Minneapolis woman beat her cousin's 4-year-old son to death because he soiled his pants, according to charges filed against the woman this morning by Hennepin County prosecutors.

Carla Cherisse Poole, 37, was charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of Demond Keith Reed, who the woman was caring for while his father, from Chicago, was serving a 30-day sentence in the Hennepin County workhouse.

A police investigator's affidavit accompanying the charges details the beating, and states that some of Poole's children witnessed it. Demond had a seizure and began to vomit after the beating, but Poole refused to call for help because she was afraid, one child told police.

When Demond stopped breathing, Poole tried to give him cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, but her attempts were unavailing, according to the minor, identified only as "Child A" in the affidavit.

"Child A stated that the next morning Demond was 'frozen' and not breathing," the affidavit states. "The defendant placed a grey blanket over Demond and left him lying on a bed for approximately two days. Child A states that the defendant eventually moved him to a closet on the first floor. Child A described Demond as having his face squished in and that she didn't want to look at him."

Demond's body was found early Sunday after police began to question aspects of Poole's original account - given last Wednesday - that an acquaintance had abducted Demond. After noting several inconsistencies or improbabilities in her story, they got a warrant and searched the house, and found his body in a closet. He was in a green canvas bag that was tied with a white cord; the bag had then been placed in a black plastic garbage bag, the affidavit said.

"The black plastic bag was analyzed for fingerprints and the defendant's prints were found on the bag," the affidavit claims.

Poole is being held in the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on $1 million bail, and she is to make her first appearance before a judge at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Dr. Jon Thompson of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office, Demond suffered a horrible beating and numerous other injuries, the affidavit said.

"Dr. Thompson documented multiple bruises to his head and his body including bruises to the right and left forehead and on the back portion of his head; he had upper and lower frenulum tears, an injury associated with a blunt object forcibly entering the mouth; he had rib fractures of an indeterminate age; he had puncture wounds on his stomach, back and buttocks; he had a large hematoma on his left eye; and he had bruises on his extremities," the affidavit said.

The frenulum is the piece of skin that attaches the tongue to the bottom of the mouth.

The doctor also noted a bite mark on Demond's stomach.

The affidavit says the beating took place over the weekend of Feb. 1-3; Poole's 11-year-old child said, "Demond had soiled his pants and had been 'spanked' " by Poole.

After the child became ill and died, prosecutors say, Poole instructed the 11-year-old to call Demond's family and tell them he was missing. A member of the family came to the house and called 911 to report him missing.

Police say that when they first questioned Poole, she reported that an acquaintance named "Shawna" had taken Demond. But under further questioning, she changed her story to say another child had beat Demond "and led him to the end of the alley."

Police determined "Shawna" did not exist.

"Finally, the defendant told officers that Demond had a toileting accident," the affidavit says. "She stated that he became ill and that his condition did not improve. She acknowledged that she knew he needed medical attention but that she was afraid to call for help."

Minneapolis Fire Station 14 was less than a half-block from Poole's residence in the 3100 block of Morgan Avenue North.

4-year-old beaten to death by relative, police say
Other children reportedly helped hold down boy
February 12, 2008
BY ANNIE SWEENEY AND LISA DONOVAN Staff Reporters

A 4-year-old Chicago boy was beaten to death by an adult relative in Minnesota who told a 6-year-old and another 4-year-old to hold him down, authorities there said today.

Demond Reed, whose family lives in Chicago, was being punished for soiling his pants, according to a complaint released by the Hennepin County Attorney’s office.

Demond was beaten during the weekend of Feb. 1 by Carla Poole, his father’s cousin, authorities said. She then allegedly left him under a blanket for two days before stuffing him inside a canvas bag and putting him in a closet.

An 11-year-old girl was then asked by Poole to lie to family members and authorities, saying Demond was missing. The child was reported missing Feb. 6. The body was found early Sunday morning.

According to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office, Demond suffered several blows to the head; rib fractures; puncture wounds on his stomach, back and buttocks; a bite mark on his stomach. Something was forcibly pushed into his mouth, authorities said.

It was unclear when he had suffered some of the injuries, according to the autopsy.

Demond was in Minnesota with his father, who was arrested in late January on a warrant. His father, Tony Reed, left Demond in Poole’s care.

Reed and Poole are cousins, authorities said.

Poole has been charged with murder, according to the complaint. The beating happened in her home, authorities said.

Demond Reed had a short life, and a brutal death
BY DAVID HANNERS
Pioneer Press

Undated courtesy photo of Demond Keith Reed, 4, who was found beaten to death in the Minneapolis home of Carla Cherisse Poole, 37, on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008. Reed, who is the son of Poole's cousin, had been left in her care. Poole reported Reed missing on Feb. 6. Police found his body in her home in the 3100 block of Morgan Ave North Minneapolis after executing a search warrant there. Poole has been charged with second-degree murder in Reed's death. Courtesy photo.

Carla Cherisse Poole beat 4-year-old Demond Keith Reed to death because he went in his pants, prosecutors allege.

And Poole had two of her children hold Demond while she beat him, police say.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman's office on Tuesday filed second-degree murder charges against Poole, 37, of Minneapolis. Demond was the son of Poole's cousin, and she had been caring for him while his father served a 30-day jail sentence.

The beating was extensive - the pathologist's account of the child's injuries runs from head to toe. After Demond died, prosecutors say, Poole hid his body beneath a gray blanket for a couple of days, then stuffed the body in a duffel bag - and stuffed that into a garbage bag - then put the child's body in a closet in her North Minneapolis duplex.

Poole has four children, who are now in protective custody. Police plan to interview them further as well as get counseling for them.

Police say at least three of them witnessed the beating and Poole had two of them, ages 4 and 6, restrain Demond during some of the assault.

"What are you doing beating up a child who soiled their pants? That's preposterous!" Freeman fumed Tuesday. "It's atrocious. Read the things that were done to this kid. Jamming things in his mouth?"

Poole is being held on $1 million bail. Her first court hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. today; a judge will decide whether the bail is too high or should go higher and also will appoint an attorney to represent her if she doesn't have one then.

Freeman said that the investigation is continuing and that if investigators find evidence of premeditation in Demond's killing, the case would be presented to a grand jury to consider charges of first-degree murder. Someone convicted of second-degree murder can be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison; conviction on a first-degree charge carries a life sentence.

The events that led to Demond's death apparently began around Christmas when he came to Minneapolis to visit members of his father's family. His father is Tony Lenddell Reed, 21, who has lived in the Twin Cities but most recently lived in Chicago. (Police say they've been told that Demond came here with his father, but they've also been told he was brought to the Twin Cities by another family member.)

In November, Reed was placed on three years of probation after pleading guilty to a marijuana-possession charge. But in early January, he allegedly violated the terms of his probation and was picked up by police.

At a hearing Jan. 29, a judge sent Reed to the Hennepin County workhouse for 30 days; he was booked into the workhouse Jan. 30.

With Reed behind bars, Demond had to stay somewhere, and family members told police that Poole agreed to take him in. Lt. Amelia Huffman, who heads the Minneapolis police homicide unit, said Reed expressed no qualms about leaving his son with Poole, who police said had no record of abusive behavior, though Huffman said police are still investigating whether Poole abused her own children.

Demond was beaten only a couple of days after his father entered the workhouse, according to an affidavit by Minneapolis police Sgt. Nancy Dunlap that accompanied the criminal complaint. The harrowing affidavit alleges Poole's beating of the boy, her children's witnessing of it, her attempts to conceal the body, and her attempt to cover up the killing by claiming Demond had been abducted by a family acquaintance named Shawna.

Police got involved Feb. 6 when a relative called 911 to report that Demond had been kidnapped. Poole's 11-year-old daughter, identified in the affidavit as "Child A," had called the relative.

Dunlap's affidavit says the girl called the family member at Poole's instruction and was told to say Demond had been abducted. In reality, police say, he had been dead for nearly half a week.

When police questioned Poole about the abduction, she gave accounts that were often inconsistent, implausible or contradictory. Police could corroborate virtually none of the story. Police and community groups put up missing-child fliers and searched the area, and police brought in dogs trained to find cadavers, to no avail.

By Saturday, police were growing more suspicious of Poole, and during an interview that day, the 11-year-old girl disclosed what police believe is the truth.

"Child A stated that during the weekend of February 1, 2008, Demond had soiled his pants and had been 'spanked' by the defendant," Dunlap wrote.

What happened went far beyond a spanking, according to Dr. Jon Thompson of the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

According to the affidavit, Thompson found "multiple bruises" on Demond's head and body, including bruises on the right and left forehead and on the back of his head. The skin beneath his tongue had been torn, which was "an injury associated with a blunt object forcibly entering the mouth," Dunlap wrote.

The child had rib fractures "of an indeterminate age; he had puncture wounds on his stomach, back and buttocks; he had a large hematoma on his left eye; and he had bruises on his extremities," the affidavit said.

The doctor also noted a bite mark on Demond's stomach.

Poole's 6-year-old son, identified in the affidavit as "Child B," claimed to have witnessed the beating and even told police that he and his 4-year-old sibling "were told to hold Demond down by the arms while the defendant beat him."

The effects of the beating were quick. The 11-year-old girl told police Demond had a seizure and began throwing up.

"Child A stated that Demond's health deteriorated over the next several hours," Dunlap wrote. "She stated that the defendant discussed calling 911 and an ambulance but decided not to because she was afraid."

The nearest paramedics were at Minneapolis Fire Station 14, less than a football field's length from the home.

The child told police Demond stopped breathing and Poole tried giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The 11-year-old "listened for but did not hear a heartbeat."

The girl said that by the next morning, Demond was "frozen" and not breathing.

"The defendant placed a grey blanket over Demond and left him lying on a bed for approximately two days," the affidavit says. "Child A states that the defendant eventually moved him to a closet on the first floor. Child A described Demond as having his face squished in and that she didn't want to look at him."

Then, prosecutors say, the cover-up began.

Poole and the 11-year-old told family members a woman named Shawna had taken Demond.

After speaking with the 11-year-old girl, police got a warrant to search the home just after midnight Saturday.

They found the boy's body in the closet, in a green canvas bag tied with a white cord. The green bag was stuffed in a black plastic garbage bag.

"Initially, the defendant told police that 'Shawna' had taken Demond," the detective wrote. "After further interview, she changed her story to claim that another child beat Demond and led him to the end of the alley.

"Finally, the defendant told officers that Demond had a toileting accident," the affidavit continues. "She acknowledged that she knew he needed medical attention but that she was afraid to call for help."

Demond's father was released from the Hennepin County workhouse Friday. He'd been given credit for days he spent in jail and for good behavior.

The above is BS if you ask me, any missing child should be put on Amber Alert and if found to be unharmed and alive, then GREAT take down the alert but damn. Granted I don't think it would have helped in this case, but one never knows. That poor baby, something forced in his mouth? I can't even imagine, I hope that woman suffers everyday.

Mourners Gather For Funeral Of Murdered Boy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Hundreds of people gathered in a north Minneapolis church for the funeral of 4-year-old Demond Reed, who was brutally beaten to death earlier this month. Mourners at the Shiloh Temple in North Minneapolis paused over a tiny casket to say goodbye.

Many who came like Heather Boykin of Minneapolis never knew Demond.

"I have boys of my own and I can't even, words can't explain why would someone do that to a poor little baby," said Boykin.

The boy's paternal grandfather, Tony Ishmon, remembered Demond as an "innocent kid" and as his "traveling buddy." Some mourners at the service wept openly as they approached the small white casket, which was open.

The mourners included several community leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and U.S. Representative Keith Ellison.

"This wonderful boy will always be a part of the beloved city of Minneapolis," said Rybak.

Ellison broke down as he called for parents to reach out to kids.

"Let them be children. We can't change a thing here but going forward we can make a world good for children," he said.

For the boy's grandfather the community outpouring couldn't ease the shock.

"It just don't seem real to me, it just don't seem real," said Ishmon. "I would like an answer why. I just want to know why."

Carla Poole, the 37-year-old cousin of Demond Reed's father, has been charged in the fatal beating. She allegedly ordered her 4- and 6-year-old sons to hold down Reed's arms. Authorities say it was because he soiled his pants.

The boy had come to Minneapolis from Chicago a few weeks earlier with his 21-year-old father, Tony Reed. He began staying with Poole after his father was pulled over by police and jailed in early January.

Demond Reed's body will be taken to Chicago where there will be another funeral service and a burial later this week.
