Missing Woman's Van Found, Foul Play Now Suspected
Posted: 10:31 AM Feb 8, 2008

Reporter: WEAU-TV Staff

The family of a missing Taylor County woman says they're hoping for the best after investigators say they think foul play may be involved. Wednesday night investigators found the missing woman's van in the Chequamegon National Forest.

The Taylor County Sheriff's Department said the 2004 Chevrolet van that belongs to 38-year-old Jean A. Viken was discovered in the forest on the Ashland County side.

Investigators say Viken's whereabouts are still unknown and, at this time, foul play is suspected.

Viken was reported missing last week from her home in the Town of Holway. Her van is at the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, being examined for evidence.

On Thursday we spoke with Jean's sister, who was very upset about her disappearance. Family members would only say they are hoping for the best. Court documents show Jean filed for divorce from her husband Duane in September. We spoke with Duane's sister, Lori Viken from Medford, Thursday who says the couple's four young children are with their dad.

Jean Viken’s sister-in-law Lori Viken says, "I don't know what to think. I'm kind of hoping she just took off somewhere just to get away. I don't think she has any enemies."

We could not reach Duane Viken for comment.

The sheriff's department is asking anyone who thinks they may have seen Viken or her van in the last week to call them. The phone number is 715-748-2200 investigators say you can also leave confidential information.

Jean Viken’s son turned five Tuesday without his mother there to tie his shoes or help him blow out the candles on his cake.
Jean Viken’s seven-year-old and twin three-year-old daughters don’t have their mother there to check over homework or tuck them in at night.
Jean Viken, a woman her friends describe as being totally devoted to her children, has been missing for more than a week. “Her life revolved around her kids,” her friends said.
“She would never leave those kids. She would never, never leave those kids,” they said.
While friends, family and the community hold out hope that the 38-year-old mother will be found alive, law enforcement has not ruled out foul play.
Jean was last seen at her home on Elm Avenue in the town of Holway at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and did not report to work on Wednesay. “I don’t think she left on her own accord,” said one family friend who has known Jean for more than 22 years. “She didn’t leave willingly. It wasn’t something she would have done,” her friends said. According to friends of the family, Jean’s purse including her keys, wallet, check book and credit cards were found by law enforcement in her house. All that is missing is Jean and her silver/pewter colored 2004 Chevrolet Venture Van’s license plates are 855HDH.
Jean’s friends say they are worried that people are forgetting about her. They worry that people saw her on the television news the first few days and then forgot about her. It is easy to see a face on a missing person poster and lose track that behind that picture is a person — a mother, a friend, someone who loved gardening, who liked to fish and for whom disappearing without trace was totally out of character. “She wants to be back with her children, she wants to be found,” her friends said.
According to Taylor County Chief Deputy Larry Woebbeking, the sheriff’s department is continuing its search efforts for Jean Viken and are asking anyone who may have seen her or her vehicle to contact them at 715-748-2000, Ext. 1 or 866-892-7463.
With the case under investigation, law enforcement personnel are releasing only limited details and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Subject: my friend is missing - THIS IS NO JOKE - - - PRAYERS NEEDED

I've known Jean since 7th grade. We met in Awanas at Westboro, WI. She is
now living in the country on a dirt road in the Owen-Withee area off of Hwy
29 in northern Wisconsin.

I just found out last night that she went missing on Tuesday night, January
29th....the night it was 47 below with the wind-chill. Her van is gone, food
was left on the stove cooking, and her purse, wallet, cell phone, and house
key were in the house. I am so distraught and upset. Her van and her just
vanished.

She's going through a nasty divorce. She has 4 kids and now all of a sudden
since the divorce, her soon to be ex wants something to do with the kids
when he NEVER did before. He was having an affair while they were married
and she found out. He moved in with his girlfriend pretty much after they
split. His son doesn't even want anything to do with his father...poor
thing. When they started school and on the nights he would have the kids,
he'd take them to school with their clothes on backwards, inside
out....ridiculous. I'm afraid he's involved but don't know for sure. He's
acting strange.

Her son, David, is supposed to have a birthday party tomorrow - turning 5.
She would NEVER miss that. She has an older daughter (age 7 - Allie) and
twin daughters (age 3 - Samantha and Rhonda).

It didn't really hit me 'til I saw the article on the internet and on TV-9
(Wausau station).

Thank you for any prayers you can say for her and her family through this
tough time.
Please, please pray for her safe return....God Speed, Jean.

We have new details about the circumstances surrounding a missing Taylor County woman.

38-year-old Jean Viken disappeared January 29th from her home southwest of Medford. Almost a week later investigators found Viken's van in a remote section of the Chequamegon National Forest in Ashland County and think foul play is a factor.

Investigators say they found Viken's wallet and cell phone in her home with the kitchen stove still on. Now Vikens friends are wondering what happened to the mother of four.

Mary Krizan Jean’s friend says, "Something happened to her to me it was planned with that bad storm everything was just coincidental."

Jean is 5’3” tall and 198 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. If you've seen Jean call the Taylor County Sheriff's Department at (715)748-2200.

I have been in constant contact with the family of Jean Schreiner Viken since we first heard of her disappearance in early February. It is not easy to write about this as I have a hard time thinking about Jean’s family, especially her 4 young children. I cannot imagine the pain and despair they are going through every moment of every day. That is why this story, unlike others we write, will be repeated until she is found, no matter what. Someone somewhere knows where she is and we want to help, this is the good side to the press.

This week, the family asks you to help by praying. Not just this week but everyday. They have arranged a special Prayer Vigil in Medford and they asking for our help. If you can make it, please go, if you can share the time and pray in your own homes, please do so. God works in mysterious ways and I truly believe you do not have to be within church walls to have your prayers heard.

No matter what the outcome of the search and subsequent results Jean's family needs the support and help in the grieving and healing process. Public support are crucial to her family's well being.

You are invited to attend the Prayer Service at the following location:

Medford United Methodist Church, 287 E. Allman Street Medford

Taylor County still actively looking, welcomes any information

There is a Web page that was donated by Donny Brown of Find Monica Foundation. Brown is a police officer in Texas that was investigating the disappearance of his sister, Monica Lynn Appleton. The Foundation was formed to hopefully spare others from enduring what he and his family did. A slow start in the investigation of her disappearance caused valuable time and potential evidence to be lost.

This was not the case for Jean Viken. Taylor County Sheriff’s department has been assisting the family and investigating any possible leads since Jean’s disappearance. According to the family, there is some new activity and they are hopeful it may bring about an answer soon.

The family has requested clarifying the fund accounts that have been set up on Jean’s behalf. “Contrary to what some groups and individuals have been told, Duane Viken, the estranged husband, does not have anything to do with the account. Donations should go directly to those accounts and not given to a third party to deposit into the accounts.”

Accounts are set up as the Jean Viken Fund. Anyone interested in helping momentarily, please send donations to:

Taylor Credit Union 825 East Allman Medford, WI 54451

The Web site www.findjeanviken.com has information about Jean, her family, and where donations can be made. Keep praying for Jean and her loved ones.

Taylor County Sheriff, Bruce Daniels requests that if anyone sees or finds anything out of the ordinary that may be of help to the investigation, to please contact him immediately at 715-748-2200 ext. 1 or 866-892-7463. In a phone conversation Tuesday, Daniels reinforced the request to turn in any information no matter how minor. It just might be the information they need to find her.

Three months after a Taylor County woman disappeared, the sheriff tells us they still suspect foul play and are following up on every lead.

Jean Viken disappeared January 29, 2008. The Taylor County Sheriff's Department says investigators found her van in the the Chequamegan National Forest in Ashland County and says it had the license plate removed.

Taylor County Sheriff Bruce Daniels says he has seen some results from evidence taken to the crime lab, but wouldn't say if that has helped determine what happened to 38-year-old mother of 4.

He says they haven't identified any suspects, and want anyone with information to call, so they can help bring closure for the family.

Friends of the Jean Viken Family have set up accounts to accept funds to help her family cover the costs associated with her suspected homicide and on going search.

"The families of victims of crime experience a very real financial burden and this is the case with Jean's family. The Jean Viken Fund will go toward the search, getting information out to the public such as flyers and posters, grief counseling, hiring a lawyer to become guardians of Jean's estate, Jean's ongoing personal bills, and much, much more that they have had to work through with her disappearance. Any help the public and concerned citizens and businesses can give would be greatly appreciated and needed. The family had a tremendous amount of issues to deal with in a very short time period. This is something that no one ever wants to experience.

Accounts are set up as the Jean Viken Fund and please send donations to:
Taylor Credit Union, 825 East Allman, Medford, WI 54451
Peoples Choice Credit Union, 352 North 8th Street, Medford, WI 54451
Thank you. "

The Friends of Jean Viken are asking if you can publicize this as public service announcements, do an update on Jean's story and add this in, web sites, News clips, news articles, any way that you can help us to get the word out to help a family that is going through all of this and it is a nightmare that no one should ever have to deal with.
Let me know if you need more info or if I can assist you in some way to get this information out there and to help continue the search for Jean and "Bring Jean Home".

Forensic specialists identified the human remains found in a sawyer county forest as those of missing woman, Jean Viken.

Thirty-nine-year-old Viken has been missing from Taylor County since January 29th of this year.

Forensic analysts say someone likely shot the mother of four to death.

Taylor county medical examiner, Scott Perrin, says Viken had more than one gunshot wound and was shot at least once in the chest.

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department says a pair of anglers found Viken's remains in the Flambeau River State Forest this weekend.

They were turned over to Taylor County and later sent to the University Hospital in Madison for analysis.

Sheriff Bruce Daniels says crime scene specialists also found and collected a number of items of forensic value, both at the scene and during the autopsy.

He says experts are doing some forensic analysis of those items right now.

The Taylor County Sheriff's Department, along with a number of other local, state and federal agencies continue to investigate Viken's death as a homicide.

Right now, Sheriff Daniels says there are several persons of interest in this case, although deputies haven't made any arrests.

The sheriff says Viken's four children are currently living with their father, Duane Viken. We did try to contact Duane earlier Monday (today), but were unsuccessful.

Sawyer County - The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department says two fisherman found human remains Saturday morning. Initial indications were that clothing at the scene was consistent with what police believe Jean Viken was wearing when she went missing on January 29, 2008.

Forensic medical specialists have now confirmed the remains are 39-year-old Jean Viken of Taylor County. The probable cause of death is a gunshot wound and police are investigating this as a homicide.

Viken's remains were found in an area about ten miles north and two and a half miles east of Hawkins, Wisconsin.

The Taylor County Sheriff held a news conference Tuesday morning regarding the murder of a Medford mother who's remains were found in the Flambeau River State Forest.

Jean Viken's body was found over the weekend in the woods northeast of Hawkins.

Jean Viken disappeared January 29, and her van was found February 6 in dense woods in nearby Sawyer County.

The Taylor County Sheriff now says investigators found two things in her home that made them suspicious right from the start.

Analysts say someone likely shot the mother of four to death.

The Taylor County Medical Examiner says 39-year-old Jean Viken had more than one gunshot wound and was shot at least once in the chest.

Tuesday the sheriff revealed why deputies called in more investigators when they first discovered Jean was missing.

Daniels: "On arrival officers noted there was a pan that appeared to have been cooking for a lengthy period of time and the purse that Jean Viken normally took with her everywhere was also in the house."

Daniels says there are multiple persons of interest in the case, but has not arrested anyone. The sheriff also told us Viken's children are with their father. Court records show Jean Viken filed for divorce in the fall of 2007. Her husband, Duane Viken, has not returned our phonecalls.

Hope they have some evidence that we don't know about that will lead to who did this to her.

I would like to know why the husband has not returned their phone calls.
I realize they were in the process of a divorce, but c'mon, this is the mother of your children, I would think you would want to be on top of this. JMO

Sheriff has several suspects for Viken murder

Marshfield News-Herald

MEDFORD - There are several suspects in the murder of a 39-year-old mother of four children of rural Medford.

However, Taylor County Sheriff Bruce Daniels didn't release names of any suspects during a press conference at 10 a.m. today at the Taylor County Courthouse in Medford.

The remains of Jean A. Viken, who was last seen at her home the afternoon of Jan. 29, were found in a wooded area by two fishermen Saturday morning about 12 miles northeast of Hawkins in Sawyer County.

Her van was found Feb. 6 in dense woods of the Chequamegon National Forest in Ashland County. Daniels also isn't releasing the date Viken died.

Crime scene specialists discovered and collected numerous items of forensic value both at the scene in Sawyer County and during the autopsy, according to Daniels. Forensic analysis of those items is underway at the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.

Analysis indicated the probable cause of death was a gunshot wound. However, no weapon has been recovered, and Daniels isn't revealing what kind of weapon was used.

The Taylor County District Attorney, Karl Kelz says investigators are continuing to look for leads in the death of Jean Viken.

District Attorney Karl Kelz says the Taylor Sheriff's Department has dedicated half of their investigative resources to solving the crime.

He says they give him regular updates on the investigation, and he stays in touch with Viken's family.

The Sheriff says an autopsy shows she was shot multiple times.

Viken was reported missing on January 29th.

In May, two fishermen found her body Southwest of Phillips, in Sawyer county.
