My mom was diagnosed with peripheral Neuropathy on Friday. Over the last few years she has been falling a lot, her foot feels like it is asleep and it won't lift when she walks.
A few weeks ago we were out and she fell again. Now, she can tolerate pain better than anyone I've ever seen before, but she went to the doctor as her hip and knee really hurt.
They did an electrode (?) test on Friday to test her nerves. The results weren't suppose to come back until this Tuesday but the doctor had to use the highest voltage to even get a reading. They scheduled to do her hands and arms this week since the results showed what she had.

She isn't diabetic - they said she had lead poisoning. Many years ago when she was a co-owner of a daycare she got chemical poisoning from the Rid product - we had a massive case of head lice for about 2 months, so she was always spraying it to keep the school clean from when the kids would come in with it.
We think this may have caused it.

My world is kind of spinning... my husband is in Iraq, I have 2 aunts dying from cancer and now this.
We'll know more after all the tests are done within the next 2 weeks.
We're not telling anyone else in the family, as my grandmother is already stressed enough with 2 of her daughters ill and a son that had kidney cancer. (He had his final surgery in Dec and has a clean bill of health besides his broken back).

Roe, I'm sorry to hear about your mom and your aunts. Depending on her age, years ago paint had lead in it. Some of the materials to build homes had lead. So she may have gotten lead in her system from almost anything. Here in San Antonio, the old Kelly AFB and all neighborhoods around it are being cleaned up because of high amounts of lead.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I hope that ok with you.

Hang in there!

I invite people here to this website, which has a very good helpful mix of people with peripheral neuropathy (including yours truly)..

One need not suffer to any great extent anymore...and it is a sad fact that most doctors do not consider other methods to help with pain.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=20

I have had PN since my early thirties (mostly due to hypothyroid condition that was not diagnosed quickly or accurately).

There are many nutritional interventions that help.
The peripheral nerves will regenerate after damage...and many of us have done that independently of doctors. But one must provide the nutrients to enable that healing. Except for IVIG (for autoimmune types) the drugs used for PN today do not heal anything...they only mask symptoms.
When you go to the link, read the stickies at the top. Many of us have been together for over 10 yrs and there are success stories there and support.

Thank you, Topaz. I'll pass this on to my mom.... I also have a thyroid condition so I'll also read up on it.

Hugs!
