Stephen Grant will be 88 years old before he has even a chance of being released from prison, a Macomb County judge ruled today.

Calling Grant "demonic, manipulative and barbaric," Circuit Judge Diane Druzinski went above the sentence recommended by the county's probation department, which called for Grant to be released from prison in as little as 18 years.

Instead, she sentenced him to 50 to 80 years for the Feb. 9, 2007, murder and dismemberment of his wife, 34-year-old Tara Grant.

The couple's two children, Druzinski said, were largely the reason.

"They will learn the brutal details of their father killing their mother," said Druzinski, who was provided reports from the children's therapist before sentencing. "They're afraid of their father and they never want to see him again."

Druzinski said that Grant is largely at fault for the intense media attention the case has received as he began courting reporters after announcing his wife had disappeared. That, the judge said, means his children will have easy access to every gruesome detail -- from Grant describing loading their mother's body parts into their sled, to him having a sexual affair with the couple's au pair, to learning that just 11 of their mother's 14 body parts were recovered for her funeral.

Grant's deception to police also influenced Druzinski's hefty sentence, she said.

"He actually cried, begging Tara to come home, even though he'd already murdered her," she said.

Lastly, the judge ruled that Grant pay about $200 in fees and $41,063 in attorney costs -- money that will be fronted by taxpayers and slowly siphoned from any payment Grant receives for work he does in prison.

Grant is set to be taken to a prison in Jackson for processing. He then will be moved to a maximum security prison Up North.

Grant's new home is Ionia County prison

Convicted killer Stephen Grant's new home is Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia County, a high-security prison surrounded by fences with razor-ribbon, patrolled by armed staff and monitored by gun towers.

Grant, 38, was sentenced Feb. 21 to 50-80 years in prison on a second-degree murder conviction for strangling and dismembering his wife, Tara Grant, in their Washington Township home a year earlier. A day after he was sentenced, an appeal was filed with the State Appellate Defender Office.

"DETROIT -- Stephen Grant, who was convicted of murdering his wife, has transferred to his new home in the Michigan Prison System.

Grant, 38, of Macomb County's Washington Township, was transferred to Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility.

Grant was moved March 13 from the state's inmate processing center in Jackson. He was taken there after being sentenced in February to 50 to 80 years in prison in his wife Tara Grant's slaying and dismemberment.

Grant is in protective custody because of his notoriety. He has his own cell and is being isolated from other prisoners.

A spokesman said Grant has not caused any problems."

Stephen Grant's father commits suicide

The Detroit News

CAPAC -- William "Al" Grant, father of convicted murderer Stephen Grant, committed suicide Friday in his home shortly after calling police to report he planned to kill himself.

William Grant, 66, was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Port Huron Hospital, Macomb County Medical Examiner Daniel Spitz said. Spitz said he likely will conduct an autopsy Saturday.

Stephen Grant was convicted of second-degree murder in December after fatally strangling his 34-year-old wife, Tara, inside their Washington Township home. He used hack saw blades to cutup his wife's body on the floor of USB Babbitt, the Mount Clemens tool-and-die shop where he worked with his father. The case drew national attention.

Stephen Grant, 38, is serving a 50- to 80 year sentence in the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia County.

My son rented hunting land from Al Grant and has know him for about three years. During Stephen Grant's trial, my son told me how it was tearing Al up. Also he said, "Al is the nicest man you'd ever want to meet."

Tonight my son called me crying, to tell that his friend had taken his life.

What a disappointment both of his children turned out to be. My heart goes out to this man. Between his son's callous murder of his wife in AG's shop, learning that her torso had even been hidden there at one point and hearing the conversations of his children during SG's incarceration,he must have been driven to despair. I'm sorry the only one in his family who actually cared about what happened to Tara felt compelled to take his own life.Hope SG's proud of himself today. PLease tell me he won't be allowed to attend the funeral of a man who took his own life due to SG's actions.

Found this Macomb County link:

It states that SG received no outside communication Friday and likely wasn't aware as of last night.

This "grandmother" is the woman who had told her murderer son after his arrest that he should have left Tara's body stuffed in a trunk of some vehicle at the airport, according to his sister's statement during one of her now infamous jailhouse visits with sg.

"Alicia Standerfer and her husband will have a court date in Macomb County Circuit Court Sept. 4 at 8:30 a.m. to explain why she should not go to jail for refusing to allow the two children in her care to see their grandmother.

Standerfer is the sister to slain mother Tara Grant, who was murdered and dismembered by her husband, Stephen Grant, in 2007...

Standerfer’s attorney, Michael J. Smith, told Local 4’s Marc Santia that he had not personally seen the documentation but understood that the “the court order was relevant to grandparent visitation rights.”

Smith maintains that his clients did nothing wrong, and that the situation is not healthy for the children.

“The children have gone through so much,” he said. “Now they have to go back to the same court where they tried Stephen Grant and found him guilty and it’s a shame.”

"Going back into the courtroom for issues with the children obviously is very hard," Standerfer said. "Because we're been trying all along to work in the best interest of the kids and we are going to continue to do that."

Sources tell Local 4 that the court has ordered Standerfer and her husband to return to Michigan and tell the court why they should not be held in contempt of court for not allowing Stephen Grant’s mother visitation with the children.

Smith said the Grant family did ask to visit with the children but said the request was tasteless. He said the family asked to see the children on Mother’s Day weekend, the first Mother’s Day without their mother.

“It’s just sad that she has to come back into the same court again after this tragedy of events,” said Smith.

"It's disheartening that we can't just move on with our lives and continue to nurture the children and guide them in the right direction," Standerfer said. "It's highly unfortunate that we have to go back up to Michigan."

Standerfer maintains that the children are doing "very well."

On Dec. 21, a Macomb County jury found Stephen Grant, 38, guilty of second-degree murder after he confessed to strangling Tara Grant, cutting her body apart with saw blades and leaving some of her body parts in Stony Creek Metro Park.

Stephen Grant to 50 to 80 years in prison for the murder of his wife and another six to 10 years for the mutilation of her body."

Way to go Alicia!! keep fighting for those children. Tara would be proud of you. I am so thankful they have you, Erik, Alex and Payton. I could not be happier that the case has been moved to Ohio. Hopefully the new judge doesn't have a superiority complex and will follow the advice of the professionals involved!

So glad to hear that this case is FINALLY being transferred to an Ohio family court. This Macomb Co. judge has seemed, to me at least, prejudiced against the Standefers from the very start. The entire Grant family, with the exception of SG's father, has disrespected Tara with their words (Kelly Uglikanski, SG and their mother) and their deeds (SG and KU) and should NOT be rewarded by being allowed visitation that will cause additional pain to these two children. The woman who advised her son that he should have left his wife's body in a trunk at the airport should have no contact with the children of the woman her son murdered and dismembered.

If the Grant family had had the kids best interests at heart from the very beginning, maybe they'd have councelled SG on getting a job or getting a divorce instead of joining him in talking smack about Tara, and they wouldn't have been lying for him after he murdered his wife. Maybe, just maybe, Tara wouldn't be dead today and SG would be happily divorced, living off Tara's spousal support checks and trolling the internet for f-buddies.

God bless you Alicia and Erik.

Rot in hell SG, KU and Mom.

:) Your post made me smile. I will second that one! Just to update those of you who have followed this from the beginning...the children are doing well. They are HAPPY...miss mom but they are doing so well with their new family. They had a blast this summer and they are involved in a lot of fun CHILD appropriate activities. They don't need granda nutcase messing with their heads AT ALL!

Respectfully snipped, KQ :happy0207: I TOTALLY agree with your post! Prejudiced at the very least... I'm thinking of a few other adjectives, also...

I think Patrick Simasko nails it.
(Saturday, October 18, 2008 Detroit News article:) "...Simasko said they will continue to fight the order because "it's our position that when Erik and Alicia adopted the children, they're the new parents. Adoption orders cancel all other orders ... it stops any prior agreements..."

Legally speaking, Erik and Alicia ARE the parents of Lindsey and Ian. Any prior "agreements" that were made, or coerced under extreme duress, or manipulated, or that fell out of the blue, clear sky became null and void the moment the Orders of Adoption were entered into effect. At least they should have become null and void...

Now, I'm comfortable with knowing that I surely don't know everything... But this one is a no-brainer to me, so I'm perplexed about how Foster can figure this contempt charge that he's made has legs.

Whatever the case, without any thought needed, I would happily pay a $500 "fine" and do jail time before I'd even think about willingly and knowingly sending my children into any arena of probable trauma and harm.

Obviously, SG's immediate family STILL has no concerns for the best interests of the children... But that's really not new, and really not a surprise, is it
