Tucson Police suspect foul play in the disappearance of a 62-year-old Tucson woman.
Read has polio. The crutches and brace Read uses to get around were left at her residence, according police reports.
A relative reported Read missing early Friday morning. Police found Read's turquoise 1996 Dodge Caravan burned out and abandoned near Golf Links and Kolb roads, according to authorities.
Authorities described Read as 5 feet, 5 inches tall; she weighs around 120 pounds and has brownish blond hair.
Police are urging anyone who may have information about Read or her vehicle to call 911 or 88-CRIME

Sunday school teacher disappears; police searching
Kay Frances Read leaves behind crutches, leg braces
08:19 PM MST on Friday, February 15, 2008
By Delane Cleveland, Fox 11 News
A 62-year-old Sunday school teacher is missing and the Tucson Police Department fears foul play.
Kay Frances Read lives near Irvington and Kolb on the southeast side.
Police found her burned out van near Golf Links and Kolb.
Police say Read needs leg braces and crutches to get around because of her polio. Both her crutches and braces were inside her home. A burned wheelchair was found in her van.

Some her neighbors woke up to find police cars surrounding her home on Marigold Circle.
One neighbor, Dustin Hoeflinger, says,“First they told me that they had a lady that didn't show up for work, and then later on they say some foul play may have been involved”.
Another neighbor, Tammy Aldrich lives next door to the missing woman. Aldrich says there was a random act of violence, however, she says she doesn’t understand what happened or what is going on.
Police say Read’s family has not heard from her since Thursday night. When family members arrived at Read’s home at 7 this morning, she was no where to be found and there was no apparent forced entry.
Read has polio and uses crutches and leg braces to get around. Neighbor Tammy Aldrich described an emotional scene, “I went next door and her sister was outside crying, and I wouldn't go in the house but I saw her crutches just right at the front entrance.”
Neighbors describe Read as very nice and can’t imagine a reason she would be the target of illegal activity.
Read teaches Sunday school, and one of her students, Sarah Luke can’t believe Read is gone. She says, “I'm shocked. I don't know why it would happen to her. She's probably one of the most innocent people out there”.
Police are asking for your help. Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1 or 88 CRIME(27463).

New clues surface in case of missing Tucson woman
08:12 AM MST on Tuesday, February 19, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Tucson police released fuzzy photos taken from an automated teller machine of a man who may be connected to a woman's disappearance last week.
Kay Frances Read, 62, has been missing since late Thursday night or early Friday morning.
Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson police spokesman, said detectives found evidence in Read's home leading them to believe foul play may be involved. Crutches and leg braces belonging to Read were left behind at her home, police said.
Police reportedly told her sister, Jane Roberts, that the picture was taken last Friday morning of a man spotted near Read's van at a gasoline station-convenience mart at East Golf Links and South Kolb roads.
The man also tried to use Read's credit card to make an ATM withdrawal, police said.
Police describe the man as in his late 20's to late 30's, 5-feet, 6-inches to 5-feet-9-inches tall, 160 to 180 pounds, with short dark hair and acne scars on his face.
He was also described as having bad teeth.
Police are asking anyone with information about Read's disappearance to call 911 or the county attorney's anonymous tipster line, 88-CRIME.

It's been over a week, and police are still trying to figure out who is responsible for the disappearance of 62 year old Kay Frances Read; a Sunday school teacher who has battled polio almost her entire life.
Police are trying to identify this man, seen here in a surveillance video taken at a local business. Police call this man is a person of interest, not a suspect.
If you recognize this man, or have any information that may help police find Kay Read, please call 911 or 88-CRIME.

TPD releases enhanced photos in missing woman case
2008-02-22
Alexis Huicochea
Tucson police have released enhanced surveillance photos of a man who is being called a person of interest in the disappearance of 62-year-old Kay Read.
Since Read was reported missing the morning of Feb. 15, Tucson police have canvassed her neighborhood and used cadaver dogs to sweep Lakeside Park and a vacant apartment complex near where the Sunday school teacher’s burned van was found.
Police suspect that foul play is involved because Read, who had polio, uses crutches and leg braces to get around, but when family members went to check on her at her home in the 7300 block of East Marigold Circle she was gone and those items were lying on the floor.
Read’s family told police that they last had contact with her the night of Feb. 14.
Shortly after reporting her missing, Read’s van, a turquoise 1996 Dodge Caravan, was found abandoned near East Golf Links and South Kolb roads — about two miles away from Read’s home, police said. The interior appeared to have been set ablaze.
The photos of the man who was seen with her van were taken by a security camera at a Conoco gas station near Golf Links and Kolb, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a TPD spokesman.
The man is in his mid to late 20s, is 5’8 to 5’9 and weighs about 180 pounds. He has a pock-marked face and bad teeth, Robinson said.
Read is 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weighs 120 pounds.
Police ask anyone with information to call 911 or 88-CRIME.

Someone tried to set fire to the inside of the driver's compartment, officers said.
A man was seen near the van and was seen at a gasoline station/convenience market, where he made a purchase and was caught on a surveillance camera.
He also was seen at a nearby bank trying to make a withdrawal using one of Read's financial cards, Roberts said.

Two weeks after a Southeast Side woman mysteriously disappeared, her family has increased the reward to $20,000 for tips that lead to a conviction, a Tucson police spokesman said.
The reward, offered with the support of Tucson Medical Center and 88-CRIME, the county attorney office's anonymous tip line, is 20 times greater than normal. For most tips, 88-CRIME will pay up to $1,000, depending on the quality of the information.
The Feb. 15 report that Kay Frances Read, 62, was missing prompted quick police response because of the suspicious circumstances. Read's glasses and leg braces, which she needed to walk because of childhood polio, were left at her house, in the 7300 block of East Marigold Circle, Officer Frank Amado said.
Despite exhaustive searches of the area around Read's house and repeated calls to the public for help, the case remains unsolved. Police released a video and still images of a man they say tried to use Read's ATM card shortly after her disappearance, but no arrests have been made.
Police are looking for the "person of interest" who was seen with the cards, Sgt. Fabian Pacheco said Monday. They have described that man as in his 20s with a receding hairline, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds with a pockmarked face and bad or rotting teeth.
Read has been described as 5 feet 5 inches, 120 pounds, with brownish blonde hair.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.

Rewards of up to $21,000 are now being offered for information leading to the suspect who apparently abducted a handicapped woman in Tucson.
62-year-old Kay Read vanished from her home on Valentine's Day.
Her minivan was found the next day -- abandoned and burned.
Police have released surveillance images of a young man seen at a gas station nearby.
He may have had something to do with Read's disappearance.
Anyone with information is being asked to call police.

The family of Kay Read, who disappeared from her home on East Marigold Circle between Feb. 14 and Feb. 15, invite all to attend a candlelight prayer Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Read was a Sunday school teacher there, not having missed a day in 25 years, her brother Wes Read said Thursday at a news conference.
He said the family did not want to call it a vigil because it wants to maintain hope that his sister will be found alive, or the man who police have identified as a person of interest will be found. He is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 7, 180 pounds, with dark decaying teeth. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.
A convenience store surveillance system videotaped the man trying to use Read's ATM card shortly after she disappeared. The store is on the southwest corner of South Kolb and East Golf Links roads.
"In our hearts, in our mind, we have hope," said Read, 60, of Peoria, Ill.
Read said despite support from the church and even those not acquainted with Kay, more is needed.
"It has been an unbelievable nightmare. I wouldn't wish this on anybody," he said. "We're reaching out, pleading with you to help us find Kay."
Police called Read's disappearance suspicious because her glasses and leg braces, which she needs to walk because of childhood polio, were found at her house.
Her van was found a short distance away and its interior was charred.
Family members - her mother, Lillian Read, 93, of Tucson; sister-in-law Linda Read, 59, of Peoria, Ill.; sister Jane Roberts, 59, of Florence, S.C., and others spent Thursday afternoon in Kay Read's neighborhood searching for her. More than 25 police officers, detectives and police dogs searched the area in the days after her death.
Wes Reid said the family encourages all in Tucson to help by searching their own neighborhoods. Fliers with photos of Read and the person of interest will be available at Friday's gathering.
Read is described as 5 feet 5 inches, 120 pounds, with brownish blond hair.
The family increased the reward Monday to $20,000 and said anyone with information about the case should dial 911 or 88-CRIME.

Missing Woman's Family Asks Public's Help
Posted: March 6, 2008 09:52 PM CST
By Teresa Jun, KOLD News 13
The family of a missing Tucson woman is renewing its plea for help. Sixty-two-year-old Kay Frances Read disappeared nearly three weeks ago. Police have few clues, which has her family more determined than ever to try and find her.
With community support, Read's family has now raised the reward money offered in this case to $20,000. Read's family members also hit the streets of south-east Tucson Thursday, around Read's home on Marigold Circle, distributing more fliers in her disappearance.
"She was a caring, loving individual,"said Wes Read, Kay's brother. "And I just can not believe why somebody would do this."
Read has taught Sunday school at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Broadway for years. Every year, she helped out at a week-long summer camp for mentally challenged children. Read also worked at Tucson Medical Center, handling medical records.
"If you could sum up my sister's whole life, it's to help others," said Jane Roberts, Kay's sister.
Read has polio, and depends on crutches and a leg brace. But her walking aides, even her glasses, were left behind at her home when she was discovered missing on February 15.
The morning of February 15, Read's blue mini-van was found burned and abandoned, blocks away near Golf Links and Kolb. Also near that intersection, it was inside a Conoco gas station convenience store that police say a man tried to use a credit card belonging to Read.
Based on images captured on grainy surveillance video, the man is described as a light-complexioned Hispanic, or dark-complexioned Caucasian. He is about 5'7" tall with a stocky build. He has short dark hair, a receding hairline, sores on his face, and dark or decaying teeth.
"You just can't imagine the nightmare we are going through," said Wes Read, pleading for the public to keep an eye open for signs of Read. "The only way we're going to find Kay is with Tucson's help."
Family members will hold a prayer gathering at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, on Friday, March 7, at 6:30pm. The church is located at 8051 E. Broadway Blvd.
Anyone with information about Kay Read's disappearance, or the person of interest in this case, is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
Family members have also created a website to generate more leads: www.findkayread.com

Tucson Police Searching for Three Missing Women
Posted: March 17, 2008 08:50 PM CDT
Three missing women cases in Tucson are generating a lot of interest. 66 year old Gayle Patrick is the latest. She was last seen Tuesday night. 62 year old Kay Read hasn't been seen since Valentine's Day and 62 year old Nora Charles disappeared in mid-November.
The Pima County Sheriffs Department and Tucson police say the three cases are not connected. However, they also say the two agencies are in close communication regarding this and all cases.
Sgt. James Ogden with the Sheriff's Department says they're leaving no stone unturned. "We're not ruling anything out. We're looking at the big picture to see if there's any connect-up with this thing. We're working closely with TPD and have a fantastic relationship with them."
Sgt Fabien Pacheco echo's Ogden's response. "We want to reassure the community that we are working aggressively on all these cases.

Waiting game difficult for kin of the missing
Caseload forces police to prioritize searches
Tucson Citizen
The family of Kay Read, 62, knows she could not walk without her knee braces, which police found in her home.
Her last contact with her family was Feb. 14. The next day, police found her van two miles from her Southeast Side home. The interior had been torched.
http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/photos/2008/03/22/80472-1.jpg (http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/photo.php?pic=http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/photos/2008/03/22/l80472-1.jpg&storyid=80472)
The polio survivor's disappearance immediately raised suspicions of foul play.
How such cases are investigated, however, varies because the sheer volume of reports means police must prioritize them.
Most missing people eventually turn up - despite the certainty of family members who say their loved one would not just pick up and go.
Last year, TPD received 852 missing adult reports, and 802 of those people, or 94 percent, were found. This year about 129 adults have been reported missing.
Police consider several factors - including age, mental capacity or history of disappearance - in determining how extensively to investigate.
"They're not always missing people, but just don't want to be found," said TPD Detective Greg Wright. "It could be that the individual that's run away or simply missing doesn't want contact with the family. We've encountered plenty of that."
Before defining a missing persons case, Wright stressed, police must gauge how suspicious a case is.
"Not every case is assigned and worked," Wright said. "That's the only way we can manage the caseload."
A detective 30 years ago might extensively work a case, but now vacation, compensatory time and staffing must be factored in.
Family frustration Also missing is 62-year-old Elnora Charles, last seen Nov. 15 by son James Pulliam, 39. Pulliam gave her a ride to Gary's Towing, 5131 E. Drexel Road, to pick up her car. Charles' home is on North Country Club Road.
Pulliam reported her missing when she did not answer his phone call the next morning. Two days later, police found Charles' car, a light-colored 1980 Chevrolet Caprice, on Mount Lemmon.
Police said they do not suspect foul play - although they do think her disappearance is suspicious. They have no suspects or leads, said Detective Bill Young. They were able to confirm reports by family members of Charles having a history of mental illness, but they don't know if that played a role.
Police received a report from a family friend that Charles had been spotted in December, Young said.
"It's a botched investigation by the TPD and the Sheriff's Department," said stepson James Lacy, 49, who still thanked those assisting in the search.
He said there is "no way our mother drove to Mount Lemmon," and said his mother doesn't have a history of instability.
TPD Sgt. Tony Sabori said investigators believe that Charles might have gone to Mount Lemmon.
The family wants clearer answers. Pulliam and Lacy said they were unhappy that they did not receive case information until several weeks after Charles was reported missing.
"It's important to our family," Pulliam said. "I've got kids that keep asking me every day: 'What's going on with grandma's case?' ''
Young said, "We've done as much on this case, if not more on this case, than any homicide investigation, even though it's just a missing persons case."
Privacy issues Some families of missing people turn to private detectives. But even if detectives find the person, they sometimes can't say that they found them.
Agencies have more stringent regulations related to privacy than in the past, Tucson private detective James MacIntyre said.
People are entitled to some privacy, he said, and a person found must be asked if he wants to be contacted. Law enforcement must also check the client's motivation.
"You've got to look at the rights of not only the family or the unit that is reporting the person missing. You've got to respect the rights of the missing person as well,'' MacIntyre said.
It is hard to say sometimes if family members of missing people are victims.
"If they feel they're a victim, they feel they're are a victim," said Rick Trevaskis, who runs the private investigation service Metro Detectives, 2030 E. Broadway, Suite 24. "As far as the codes or the laws they might not specifically be a victim. They aren't eligible for victims' compensation."
Trevaskis said investigators can work only with leads they have, and that families need to understand those limits.
"I can only guarantee them that we will work diligently toward their case," he said. "If the results are not there, they will not come. That is a tough thing to deal with."
As a private detective, Trevaskis may charge from $50 to $75 an hour on a case.
When a private investigator who knew Kay Read offered his services, the police did not provide information on the case, her brother, Wes Read, said.
TPD homicide detective Kevin Hall said police cannot stop families from hiring a private investigator. However, he pointed out legal pitfalls of having two investigations - duplicate interviews and possible contamination of evidence in a criminal case.
Families do not always agree with how law enforcement makes case decisions, especially when feelings run high. Some, said MacIntyre, might fear how law enforcement will handle the missing person if he or she is found.
"It's a whole range of emotions," he said. "It could be that the individual missing comes from a dysfunctional family. It's a control situation sometimes."
In Read's case, family and police continue the search.
Read is described as 5 feet 5 inches, 120 pounds, with brownish-blond hair. The day of the disappearance, police said, someone tried unsuccessfully to use one of Read's ATM cards at a local bank.
"It's a case where we don't know where we are going," said Wes Read, 60, of Peoria, Ill. "We're still grasping for straws."
Despite that, Read said he wants police to allow not only the family but also willing volunteers to do more to help in the process.
"They keep us at bay, doing their job," he said. "I'm not the type to sit back and be patient."
Unsolved homicides are never closed, according to prosecutor Kathleen Mayer of the Pima County Attorney's Office.
"Sometimes they (families) get frustrated, when they get repeat notices, and the cases don't seem to get resolved," Mayer said. "Agencies continue to work on them as they get more information, but they don't always keep victims apprised of that."
And sometimes in a missing-persons case, it can't be established that a person was slain.
Mayer speaks with sympathy about the despair of never finding an answer.
"In my conversations with these families, it's just the heartache of not knowing what happened to their loved ones."

Family searches for Kay Read
05:38 PM MST on Tuesday, February 19, 2008
By Deanna Morgan, Fox 11 News
Deanna Morgan reports Family and friends of Kay F. Read, 62, handed out fliers on Monday hoping to get the word out about her disappearance and acquire information. They say they won't sit and wait for answers from police.
“I need to do something,” says Read’s brother, Wes Read, who flew in from Peoria, Illinois, Read’s hometown. “I haven't slept in three days…I lay down…I wake up in nightmares.” “I have to find her.”
He mapped out the area surrounding Read's home - the last place she was seen. Then, family and friends went door to door handing out fliers with information about Read, who has blonde hair, is 5’2” and handicapped.
“She can't walk, she can't run,” says Read’s niece, Wendi Smith, a resident of Tucson. Smith says her aunt also has polio.
Read was reported missing on Friday. Police say her house showed no signs of forced entry. Her family says things she can't live without - glasses, crutches, and a brace - were left inside the home. Police found her van, a 1996 Turquoise Dodge Caravan, on Friday burned on the inside, but empty. Police are now saying more about their investigation.
“A male was seen near the van,” says Sgt. Fabian Pacheco of the Tucson Police Department. Police are trying to identify the man in a security camera video taken from Conoco on Kolb and Golflinks, but won't say if it's the man spotted near the van. The video is hard to make out.
“We're attempting to enhance the quality of that photograph,” says Pacheco
Within two hours family and friends say they handed out fliers to about 2,000 homes. No one they spoke to had information on Read’s whereabouts. Pacheco says detectives have no leads yet either.
Read was a sunday school teacher at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Tucson. Associate Pastor Angie McCarty says Read hadn’t missed a service or class in over 25 years. McCarty says members are praying for Read and the person who may have harmed her.
“We would not presume to know how to love our enemies in a very practical way at this time, but at the very least we can pray that a shed of consciousness will rise in their minds,” says McCarty
“Somebody out there knows where she's at,” says Read’s brother, Wes. “We still have hope she's alive.”
Family and friends will search for Read again on Tuesday morning. Anyone interested in helping can meet them at Walgreens on Kolb and Golf links at 9am.
Anyone with information should call 9-1-1.

Missing woman's kin renew pleas for help

advertisementFamily members and loved ones of missing Sunday-school teacher Kay Read renewed their pleas for help Saturday by holding a news conference, passing out fliers and announcing the creation of a Web site.
Read's brother, Wes Read, urged Tucsonans to visit www.findkayread.com so they can study surveillance pictures of a man police have identified as a "person of interest" in Read's apparent abduction.
"It's been over a week, and the police have no clues, no leads," Wes Read, 60, said. "We just want our Kay back. She means so much to us."
Read, a records clerk at Palo Verde Hospital, was last seen the evening of Thursday, Feb. 14.
When Read, 62, didn't answer her phone the next morning, her sister, Mary Seagle, went to her home in the 7300 block of East Marigold Circle and found the front door unlocked. Inside, she found Read's crutches and her glasses.
The Illinois native was stricken with polio at age 8 and can't walk without her leg braces or crutches.
Tucson police found Read's missing van later that morning, less than two miles from her house, the inside of it burned.
Police later obtained grainy surveillance video and records showing a man buying gasoline for Read's van at the Conoco station south of the intersection of Golf Links and Kolb.
They also have evidence the man tried unsuccessfully to use her credit card to get money from an automated-teller machine at the Wells Fargo bank north of the intersection.
Although the surveillance pictures aren't of the best quality, Wes Read said he is still hoping they will spark someone's memory.
"We don't care as much about the individual as much as my sister," but someone has to have either seen the man or knows where he is, Read said.
"If you have family you know what it is to love a sister, brother, mother, dad or child," Wes Read said. "We love our Kay. Please go out and look in your area for clues to help us find Kay."
Tucson police Capt. Bill Richards said detectives have spent hundreds of hours investigating Read's disappearance.
Crime-scene analysts have processed her van three times, and they spent five hours processing her house on Feb. 15.
Unfortunately, real life isn't as it is on such TV shows as "CSI" — it takes time to analyze forensic evidence, Richards said.
The Read case is being given top priority, though, Richards said.
"All violent crime cases are important, but this one has been given our highest priority because of its circumstances," Richards said.
Richards reiterated Wes Read's message: People should search nearby washes, alleys, yards and desert lots for Read and not just those on the city's Southeast Side.
Several hours passed between the time Read was last seen and the discovery of her van, Richards said. The suspect could have gone anywhere within that time.
"All options are on the table," Richards said.
According to family members, Read moved to Tucson more than 30 years ago and taught Sunday school at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway.
Their mother, Lillian, 93, moved to Tucson to be near her in 1996, Wes Read said. She, too, attended Saturday's news conference.
Kay Read devoted her life to her family, her church and her work and never failed to mark special occasions with greeting cards, family members said.
Among those going door-to-door Saturday were family members from Tucson, Illinois, South Carolina, Read's fellow church members and two generations of her Sunday school students.

This case has been just heart wrenching. I am sure it is heart breaking to her loved ones. When I first read about it, it made me so angry! Then I wondered how did they get her in the car or truck since they left her braces or crutches? If they had killed her there should have been some evidence and what would be the purpose of killing her?
Then I was sure they would find her right away. It sure is puzzling.

The search continues for a Tucson woman, missing for nearly four months.
The owner of many of Tucson's billboards donated space for a billboard to keep the case of Kay Read in the public eye.
The Sunday school teacher went missing from her home in February.
Read has polio.
Her crutches and brace were left behind.
A man was seen at a gas station near Golf Links and Kolb, trying to use a credit card that belongs to Read.
And her mini-van was found burned and abandoned just blocks from her home.
Read's family has put up a 20- thousand dollar reward in the case.

Missing woman's family holds benefit event
Posted: Nov 29, 2008 06:14 PM EST
A benefit car wash on Saturday morning in honor of a missing Tucson woman. 62-year-old Kay Read was taken from her Eastside home in February of this year. While police uncovered some pretty significant evidence, there's still been no arrests and no sign of the missing woman.
A little soap and water can clean up lot of things, but it can't take away the pain the family of Kay Read has been feeling now for 9 months.
"She touched a lot of hearts...and I'm grateful to all the people who remember her, recognize her, honor her."
Either late February 14th or early the following day, Read was abducted from her Eastside home on Marigold Circle. She had polio and needed crutches and a leg brace to walk. Both were left behind.
Her burned out van was recovered a few hours later near Golf Links and Kolb. At that intersection, a man was caught on surveillance tape attempting to use one of Read's credit cards at a Conoco Gas Station.
That man has not been identified to this day. And Kay read has been missing ever since.
"It's really hard right now at Thanksgiving and Christmas because there was so much that she did...I just needed to get the word back out there and doing the carwash for the Christians children fund, Kay did that...this would've been her 27th year."
A benefit in honor of a woman who did everything she could for others.
And the proceeds aren't for Read's family. They're for a charity she contributed to every year.
"Every year Aunt Kay sponsored one to two children for the Christian Children's fund and that's why my mom's trying to do here today is to sponsor at least one child in the memory of Aunt Kay."
A memory that Read's sister and best friend simply won't let die.
"I just know that there's somebody out there still that knows something...and if they just call, just let somebody know where she's at--and I'm not gonna give up until we find her....I still think she's out there...and I still won't give up that thought."
Again this remains an open and unsolved case. If you have any information about that person of interest or the whereabouts of Kay Read, call 911 or 88 Crime.

Police consider case of missing disabled woman a homicide
DAVID L. TEIBEL
Tucson Citizen
Among the city's 70 criminal homicides in 2008 was a disabled woman listed for much of the year as a missing person.
Kay Frances Read, 62, missing since the morning of Feb. 15, is considered the victim of a homicide, said Detective Sgt. Kevin Hall, head of the Tucson police homicide detail.
The circumstances surrounding Read's disappearance made police immediately suspicious, prompting an extensive missing person investigation.
Police, family and volunteers searched the areas around Read's Southeast Side home for weeks but failed to come up with any trace of her.
Read's family held out hope throughout the year that Read was alive.
Read's sister, Mary Seagle, said her family had not been told that police consider Read a homicide victim.
Seagle refused to admit her sister is dead. (more... (http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/106585.php))

Kay Read disappearance still unsolved
Posted: Jan 3, 2009 02:30 PM EST
Almost a year after Kay Read vanished, her family is left with many unanswered questions.
Mary Seagle, Read's sister, says the holidays have been really tough.
"It's been really hard, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas, because Kay is Thanksgiving and Christmas. She donates, she gives, and she does things for people," says Seagle.
Searches for the 62-year-old woman turned up nothing, but her van was found set on fire.
Read's sister is hoping for a miracle.
"I still feel she's out there. I'm not going to give up the thoughts, or the prayers," says Seagle.
Kay Read disappeared from her Tucson home in February. It's one of 34 unsolved homicide cases in 2008.
Tucson Sgt. Fabian Pacheco says, "We now have 8 detectives assigned to homicide, and one Sgt. They continue to aggressively investigate these remaining cases."
Sgt. Pacheco says detectives are still trying to solve Read's disappearance. Originally classified as a missing person's case, the search for Read later turned into a homicide investigation.
Seagle says, "I won't accept homicide. She's not been proven that."
For police, the community plays a big role in solving cases like this.
"The success of many of these depends to a certain extent on the assistance of the community, on people out there who have information regarding that," Sgt. Pacheco adds.
Read's family is asking the community to not give up.
"Please whoever knows that little bit of information, give her back to us, we need her," says Seagle.
Please contact the Tucson Police Department at (520) 882-7463 with any information on Kay Read.

Kay Read No witnesses
Published: 02.09.2009
Tucson, Arizona ~ A sign sits in front of Kay Read's East Side home with a prayer written on it. It pleads with anyone who has information about her disappearance to come forward, but it also conveys hope that Read will return to her family safely.
"I know Lord that somebody knows something. Please God, give that person the strength to give Kay back to us," the sign reads.
It has been almost a year since Read, 63, was reported missing from her home in the 7300 block of East Marigold Circle.
Her van was found the day she disappeared, burned and abandoned near East Golf Links and South Kolb roads.
Tucson police classified Read's case as a homicide last year and continue to investigate, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
There's no new information, Robinson said.
Her family is still hopeful.
"I'm not going to give up. We're not going to give up until we get her back," said Mary Seagle, Read's sister. "There's got to be at least one or two people that has to know something."
Seagle and the rest of the family have done everything they can to find someone who knows Read's whereabouts. In the past year, the family has passed out 37,000 fliers, had a billboard donated to solicit information and set up a Web site in her name, Seagle said.
A $20,000 reward has been put up by Read's family, Tucson Medical Center and 88-CRIME.
The family also has held two prayer gatherings and will have another gathering on Sunday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, she said.
That day will mark the one-year anniversary of her disappearance.
Seagle reported Read missing after Seagle went to her house to check on her. Read's family became worried after she didn't answer her phone that morning.
After Read was reported missing, someone put a dollar's worth of gas in her van and tried, unsuccessfully, to use her Bank of America card to withdraw cash from a Wells Fargo ATM.
Tucson police identified a "person of interest" seen on a surveillance video at the Conoco gas station and the automated-teller machine.
That person has not been found.
The lack of witnesses and information has baffled her family.
"If anyone saw her, and she was not tied up in a chair or covered up, they would know her," said Read's 94-year-old mother, Lillian Read. "I don't know why they would take her and not tell anybody."
Read either wore a leg brace or walked with crutches because of polio. Her limited mobility did not stop her from giving to the less fortunate, eating dinner with her mother or tending to her neatly landscaped front yard, Seagle said.
Read, a records clerk at Palo Verde Hospital, spent most of her free time during the week with a friend at the Devon Gables Health Care Center and with her mother, Seagle said.
She also was a dedicated Sunday school teacher at St. Paul's.
Read gave most of her money to her favorite charities, including the Christian Children's Fund, Seagle said.
"When I told them she wouldn't be sponsoring a kid anymore, the lady broke down in tears," she said.
Read loved to spend time outdoors, and she landscaped her front yard by herself, using a broom and a rake, Seagle said.
"She did the yard one brick at a time and one rock at a time," Seagle said. "She just loved being outside."
One year after her disappearance, the yard is still tidy, neatly adorned with gravel, river stone and plants. The only changes that have taken place are the sign, a pot of flowers and an artificial rose that a stranger left in front of the sign.
The sign is not coming down until Read comes home.
Seagle has faith.
"To me, God still has miracles out there," she said.
PRAYING FOR KAY
Kay Read's family will hold a prayer gathering at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway.

Tucsonan's family marks anniversary of her disappearance
February 10, 2009, 4:01 p.m.
Valentine's Day means something far different than candies and flowers for the family of Kay Read.
Read, 62, was last seen on Valentine's Day 2008, at a dinner with her sister and mother, before she disappeared the following day.
Her family is holding a reception in her honor at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway.
"One year later, we are still hoping, praying and searching," her family said in a statement issued through Tucson's Homicide Survivors.
Tucson police declared Read's case a homicide in December, but her family refuses to give up hope.
The reward was increased to $20,000, thanks to fundraising efforts, for information that leads to the case's closure.
The Pima County Attorney's Office anonymous tip line is offering an additional reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest or indictment of the person responsible.
Read, a Sunday school teacher and medical records clerk, had called her mother upon returning home after the Feb. 14 dinner. But calls to Read the following morning went unanswered.
Read's sister, Mary Seagle, went to check on her sister at Read's home on East Marigold Circle, near East Irvington and South Kolb roads.
Seagle found her sister's door unlocked and her van missing.
Read's glasses and leg braces, both things she never went without, were still in the house.
"Law enforcement has done an exhaustive search," the family's statement said. "Family and volunteers have helped search for Kay. They have distributed thousands of fliers with Kay's picture."
Authorities had also combed the areas around her home, alleys, ditches and the Los Reales Landfill to no avail.
Shortly after Read's disappearance, her van was found - on fire - and someone had also attempted to use her ATM card.
A person of interest was captured in a grainy surveillance video but no arrests were made.
"I still think she's out there. I'm not going to give up that thought," Seagle said in a previous story in the Tucson Citizen. "I know God has miracles. Until they prove different, I'm not going to change my mind."
More information can be found on the family's Web site at www.findkayread.com.
Read's family and officials urge anyone with information to call the anonymous tip line at 88-CRIME.

Family members of Kay Read speak out about her disappearance
Posted: Feb 15, 2009 04:17 AM
Even after a year of investigating, there are still no major tips, no clues into the disappearance of Kay Read, the 63-year-old woman who was last seen Valentine's Day 2008.
For her family, it's a mystery that's made the past year terrible - a living nightmare. They each have their own way in dealing with her disappearance. For Mary Seagle, it's acting like her sister's still here.
"There's some nights I drive by here and I just sit in her driveway or I'll sit out in front of the house, and I talk to her, I talk to the Lord about it," Seagle said.
Faith is all the family has right now. After all, they're dealing with the unthinkable.
"Usually you think the parents are taken before children, but when your children are taken from you, it's a different story," said Kay's mother, Lillian Read.
At this point, they just want to know where Kay is. As for the person or people responsible, they say they're leaving that to both the law and the Lord.
"We have prayed, diligently, that Kay would be found, or the person that took Kay would be found," said Jane Roberts, Kay's sister, who flew in from South Carolina.
"That's about all you can do. Just keep hoping and praying and asking people to help," said her mother.
Because if they don't, it's just a case that police are investigating.
"People think she's been found. That it's resolved. And they don't know," Roberts said.
That's why at Sunday's prayer gathering, they hope to raise both awareness and support.
"Since this has happened, it's amazing how many wonderful people we have met that have been supportive and they're right there," said Seagle.
Because without this sister, daughter and friend... life is a nightmare.
"Just know that, we're not gonna quit until we find her," Seagle said.
The prayer gathering is Sunday afternoon at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Broadway near Pantano, starting at 4 pm.

Family and friends gather for missing woman Kay Read
Posted: Feb 16, 2009 12:24 AM EST
To the congregation at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, hope is a confidence in things they can't see. In this case, Kay Read's whereabouts. She's the Tucson woman who went missing one year ago.
"So we can't see clearly, the resolution to this, but we believe there will be one," said Billy Still, the church's pastor.
That's why they gathered Sunday, most holding balloons with words of love and hope.
"It's support for the family, support for all of us that are here, including my family, you know, we've known Kay for a long time," said Chris Weber, a family friend.
Releasing the balloons symbolized a commitment to Kate through their faith in God.
"We hold on with closed fists. It just doesn't work. We're powerless in a certain area here. So we believe, if we can open our hearts and our hands and open our lives, and let god's spirits move, something that we've not yet imagined, can happen," said Pastor Still.
It's a gathering Kay's family members needed.
"It was an encouragement to me, that, they love Kay and they came out to support our family," said Jane Roberts, one of Kay's sisters.
But even more so, the gathering was a chance to get the word out that she's still missing and that they desperately want answers.
"Especially for my momma. She just, she holds it in so well. And I know it kills her everyday. So just that one person. Please come forward," said Mary Seagle, Kay's sister.
Until then, family members and friends will hold on to the only thing they have.
"Hope. That something will come out. And again, for Kay and God to know that we are with her and God is with her as well," said Weber.
Police believe foul play was involved because Kay had polio and when police went to her home, they found her leg braces and crutches. They also found her wheelchair inside her burnt van. That's why they think someone took her. But still, no major tips have been reported.

Update 09-12-2009: Thanks to all who donated in "HONORING KAY F. READ" American Red Cross Blood Drive. Whether it was at TUCSON MEDICAL CENTER (TMC) (TMC staff are great people), HUNDRED PALMS / ST. PAUL's UNITED METHODIST CHURCH or at the AMERICAN RED CROSS DONOR CENTER. We had first time donors at all 3 locations and some that hadn't donated in many years. Kay's birthday at the ARC donor center had reported that we had 25-28 donors HONORING KAY. There was a gal that had been in Kay's 2nd grade Sunday School at St. Paul's of course, a few years back, she was so happy that she could donate in KAY's name. She said Kay made a difference in her life. Another LAW STUDENT lady saw the news cast at noon and came directly over to donate for Kay. You ladies are an inspiriation. KVOA & KOLD NEWS STATION's gave a great report and coverage on the blood drive. They both PROMOTED the AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE IN THE NEED FOR BLOOD TO HELP THE COMMUNITY. Thanks John (KVOA) & SOM (KOLD) you both are special to us, God Bless! We hope to have a quarterly blood drive in HONORING KAY. STAY TUNED FOR UPCOMING INFO & LOCATIONS.
Update 08-01-2009: We are having a 'HONOR KAY READ' blood drive on Kay's 64th birthday, August 26th, 2009, 7 am till 2 pm (4:45 if doing platelets) at the American Red Cross Blood Bank at 7139 E. Broadway. If interested in donating blood or platelets, please call Mary at 520-886-7212 to set up an appointment. If this date or location does not work for you, please do not let this stop you from HONORING KAY by donating. We can set up a time at another location if need. Kay to date has donated 9 1/4 gallons, this is something that is close to her heart. Just know that this is another way of helping somebody in need, probably to save a life. Tucson Medical Center (Kay's employer) is also sponsoring a blood drive HONORING KAY August 11th. Hundred Palms Assisted Living with St. Paul's UMC is also having a blood drive August 19th. Please consider donating, it is easy and a wonderful way of giving of yourself. You'll feel so proud that you can help someone in need.

Update 04-07-2009: It has been a little while since the anniversary of Kay's disappearance. We did have a PRAYER GATHERING & BALLOON LIFT on February 15th at St. Paul's. We had many wonderful friends (Jane even was here from S.C.) that came to help lift Kay up to the Lord, many hugs, many tears, just remembering and sharing stories of our precious Kay. It was a very emotional day for all of us. The media were terrific in helping share Kay's story in a beautiful way just like KAY. Kay is still missed, remembered and always with us in everything we do. Thanks to all for helping with you friendship, your prayers, your hugs and making it very easy to always share our stories until we have Kay home again. Blessings to all, Mary, Lillian, John and the rest of Kay's family.
Update 02-10-2009: Please join us February 15th 4:00 pm, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 8051 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ. for a prayer, balloon lift and reception.
Update 02-08-2009: Kay Frances Read is still missing since Feb. 15th, 2008 from her home in Tucson, Az. Kay is missed so much, every day is so long but the past year has now flown by. Dear Heavenly Father, We pray every day for our sweet Kay's return. Kay's Mother is hurting, as are all of her siblings & in-laws, all of her nieces & nephews, her great nieces & great nephews, her Sunday School children, her church family, her co-workers, neighbors and people all over Tucson still need her returned. The not knowing is so unbearable, the questions "WHY KAY?" & "FOR WHAT REASON?" Lord there has to be somebody out there that knows the answer. Dear God PLEASE GIVE THAT SOMEBODY THE STRENGTH TO CALL 88-CRIME OR 911 GIVING OUR KAY BACK TO US. Please give us the peace Lord that we need to get through each tough day until we have Kay back. Thank you too Lord for all you do for & give each of us. We give you the glory that only you deserve! Thank you Jesus! In Christ Name. Amen
Update 01-05-2009: Christmas is a good day because it is Jesus Birthday, but lonely & sad without Kay. Kay loves Christmas, the decorations, the toys for the toy drives. She collected toys all year long to take to Tucson Medical Center, Gospel Supply, Walmart and anywhere else that had boxes for toys. She would also pick up several Angels from the Angel Trees all over Tucson. Kay also buys all kinds of canned & box foods for all of the Community Food Bank Drives. Kay is missed by many for her bright happy smiling face and her giving ways. We miss her because she is so special to all of us. I (her sister Mary) miss talking to her every day, figuring out what our Mama needs or wants, or what is going on with her cats Bobby & Jack, or what is going on at work. Kay is missed so much by our Mom, her heart breaks everyday not having her to call or have dinner with, to watch TV with, to go shopping with but mostly seeing and touching & hugging her. Kay we love you wherever you are, we will not give up till we find you. That’s a promise that will be kept. We're all praying for your return soon. WE LOVE YOU KAY AND NEED YOU HOME AGAIN........
