BEIJING (AP) - Chinese officials accused the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, of trying to sabotage this summer's Beijing Olympics, suggesting Friday they are prepared to take harsh measures against any group causing instability in the Himalayan region.

And so he is...He doesn't belong in politics. The Dalai Lama is head of state in Tibet. In his own words:

“ ...if the situation was such that there was only one learned lama or genuine practitioner alive, a person whose death would cause the whole of Tibet to lose all hope of keeping its Buddhist way of life, then it is conceivable that in order to protect that one person it might be justified for one or 10 enemies to be eliminated—if there was no other way. I could justify violence only in this extreme case, to save the last living knowledge of Buddhism itself. ”

It is politics, folks..clear and simple. The West is being brain washed.

This why as much as I love sports I don't think I'm going to watch the Olympics this summer. Given the horrific human rights record China has I personally think it is obscene to have them hosting the Olympics.

I've always got mixed feelings - isolate them, and they'll just continue to abuse their people. Engage them too much, and we're helping the process. But some engagement helps their people to learn it can be another way, puts some pressure on the gov't to change, slowly. Which has been happening in China, little tiny bit by little tiny bit. But the Olympics is a big deal.

You make a valid point, but I can't help but feel China is playing the rest of the world with this.

Yes, but they're also having to make consessions - athletes and visitors can bring their own religious materials (normally forbidden), other little stuff like that. The place will be flooded with visitors, who will talk to the Chinese, and without any intentional anything, information will flow back and forth.

They want the PR benefits, but the exposure to the rest of the world comes with it.

There is no doubt that China is responsible for some horrific human rights violations. However, remember that it took nearly forty years of exile for the Dalai Lama to propose democracy for Tibet and for him to criticize the oppressive feudal autocracy that he himself was responsible. One was not much better than the other.
