Richard Gagnon, 35, is charged with murder in the 2005 deaths of Diane and Charles Parker Sr.

Almost three years ago, someone took Charlie and Diane Parker’s lives. The Parker’s were found shot to death inside their home on Hwy 90 in April 2005. Many people thought the Parker’s daughter, Bambi Bennett, had a hand in the killing. A few weeks later, prosecutors charged Bambi Bennett and her boyfriend, Richard Gagnon, with murder. Then, 13 months following the arrests, prosecutors dropped the murder charges against Bennett because of a lack of evidence. Richard Gagnon, Bennett’s boyfriend at the time, is expected to go to trial Monday, but prosecutors say they can still charge Bennett in the case if any new evidence comes up. Investigators say investigations like this, never really end.

Judge nixes requests to toss evidence

A man who goes on trial next week for the slaying of his girlfriend's mother and stepfather told a co-worker in the weeks before the couples' death that he wanted to "cause harm" to them, 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Greg Hembree told a judge Thursday.

The comment was revealed during an evidence hearing Thursday in which defense lawyers for Richard Gagnon asked that items taken from Gagnon's home and his vehicle not be allowed at his trial. Circuit Court Judge Steven John denied the motions.

Gagnon, 35, is charged with murder in the 2005 deaths of Diane and Charles Parker Sr., mother and stepfather of his former girlfriend and one-time co-defendant, Bambi Bennett.
Clean-shaven, shackled and wearing a brown prison jumpsuit, Gagnon sat quietly in an Horry County courtroom during the evidence suppression hearing.

During the hearing, Detective Neil Livingston of the Horry County Police Department testified that a co-worker of Gagnon's told him that "harm should be done to the Parkers" because they were interfering in Bennett's child custody and property issues.
Livingston testified there was "quite a bit" of blood found in the home including in the hallways, bedroom and bathroom.

Defense attorney Barbara Pratt said search warrants obtained by police to search Gagnon's home and vehicle were "vague" and obtained with information not in police reports.

Pratt said a man told police that a white vehicle was driving around the Parker home at the night of the killings. But during a later interview, the man said it was a van and not a Chevrolet Blazer that Gagnon owned.

All of the information will be allowed at trial.

Gagnon has remained jailed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center since his arrest on April 22, 2005.

The Parkers, both 54, were killed sometime between the evening of April 11 and about 8:30 a.m. April 12, 2005, police said. Police initially charged Gagnon and Bennett, who spent six months in jail after the shootings. Prosecutors dropped charges against her because of a lack of DNA evidence. It is not known if she will testify during the trial.

Bennett and Gagnon had been dating for nearly two years before the slayings, after he started working for her parents at their business, Mirrortec, on S.C. 90. Gagnon's record includes convictions for petty larceny in New York in 1991 and aggravated assault in 1999 in Pennsylvania. He was sentenced to two to four years in prison for the aggravated assault charge, prosecutors have said.

Jury selection is expected to start at 10 a.m. Monday. Opening statements are expected later that day.
