View Full Version : I got my Christmas bonus

I got it a week ago. I always spend it on everyone else for Christmas, not this year. I went shopping, got me a whole new wardrobe including all the extra's, shoes, accessories etc. I bought new boots, two pair. I got new perfume, a new hair do and took myself to dinner on me. I bought my girlfriends our drinks for the evening and have enjoyed my bonus. Going out again after work to buy a few more pairs of slacks and a new coat and some jewelery to match my new outfits. Can anyone think of anything else I need? What's the best way you've ever blown a bonus?

I'm way to practical and always put it towards bills, fixing the house or presents.

I can't think of anything you missed. shoes, purse, perfume, clothes and drinks!! You covered it all. Any left to treat yourself to a night at a hotel with room service. That's always nice to pamper yourself and not have to clean up.

What about a mani/pedi?? With new shoes you'll want to make sure your toes looks nice.

Well... IF I get a bonus this year (I usually do but don't want to count my chickens) I'm blowing it on a new flat screen tv.

I usually end up spending it on others too......but not this year!

I just bought a new 32" Visio flat screen wall mount. I love it!!! It's 28 pounds - I carried it in the house my self! It's not on the wall but maybe someday.

Now I need a 20" for my room!

I have NEVER heard of a Bonus over 100$.

If you got more than that, 50% of it should go toward your retirement, which might be matched by another contribution from your employer to make 100% of your bonus amount being invested in your future, when your friends are not around, not supporting you in your senior years, not alive anymore, or not willing to share their wealth with you. That 50% would grow to 100% of the bonus value in less than 12 years at 5%, OR growing at 100% of the bonus at 8.5% in a conservative investment account paying 7-9% per year.

OK, now, what to do with OTHER 50% of your bonus?.........the rest of your flamboyancy...10% of the total to buying drinks and dinner for three or four of your closest friends......another 24% to charities you believe in, some way to feel good about what you work for....and the remaining 15% to the people closest to you... you can spend this amount on Christmas presents, or later in the year when your loved ones need it......nothing spent on yourself.......if you work and cannot spend and support and provide for yourself on your wage, and use bonuses for others, and for investments in yourself, why are you working? Get another job, where you can support your clothing and other needs on your salary, spending gifts to you on yourself, looks to me like you are unervaluing yourself, choosing to indulge your fantasies on bonuses, rather than using bonuses to INVEST in your future, and take the chance to GIVE to those whom you know are not as fortunate.

My opinions only. Last time I had a bonus for 12 months of work, it was less than $100.........and all of us got the same amount. If you are getting bonuses in the thousands, tell your accountants to re-formulate how they pay people! Their math is a little backward.

Oh, and the last 1%........spend it on yourself!

That's what I'm looking for 32". And, I definitely want it on the wall, so I gotta include the mounting bracket in the price. I'm hoping that if I wait until a coupla days after Christmas I might get a better deal.

I contribute the max to my 401k, my boss does a very healthy match and my Christmas bonus is usually between $1k - $2k. I have money in savings.. but that's just what it is.. savings. My family and community do benefit from my good fortune all year long.

But...... every once in a while I want to do something with my bonus that is unexpected and buy something that I normally wouldn't justify from my savings account.

You are a bit judgemental, no?

My boss always give me my bonus the last work day, she says its so that we don't use it on others, we use it on ourselves.

I still use it on my child though. his b-day is two weeks after christmas. But I do spend some on myself and the rest goes to bills and savings.

I love it!!
I'd have it on the wall but I ultimately want it above the fireplace due to how my living room sits. So that would take some work and extra time to hang it steady.
My mom bought one too. WalMart $589. It's digital ready and everything.

Funny thing... I only have basic cable but I'm now getting extra channels including a porn channel when the signal comes in.

But...... every once in a while I want to do something with my bonus that is unexpected and buy something that I normally wouldn't justify from my savings account. You are a bit judgemental, no?:71526:

I agree!

My bonus ranges in the same bracket as yours - depending on if I've gotten perks throughout the year. (A few years ago I got my yard done so I had a smaller cash bonus).
My company pays fair wages... actually more than a lot in our industry. They do not need to re-formulate anything.

My opinion of a bonus is so you can do with it as you need OR want. I work hard every year and make a descent living. I pay my bills and take care of myself. I should not have to donate my bonus to a charity unless I want to.
My job is for me to make my living. If others around me need help throughout the year I can choose to help them but do not feel the need to if I don't want to. I may be selfish but I work so I can have! I went to school got a degree, found a job, and pay MY OWN way. Yes, there are less fortunate people but I will not feel guilty about spending my weekly paycheck or my bonuses on ME and those I CHOOSE to spend on.

They say bonuses should be 'blown" and spent on yourself and should not be dependent for bill paying, etc. The same goes for tax refunds and anyone who is paid overtime on their job. Don't learn to live on overtime money, tax refunds and bonuses....so they say.

Easy to say, I guess.

Okay, here we go. I got $1k tax free in the form of a cashier's check (my company doesn't believe in making the employees pay taxes on a gift). I contribute the max to my 401k and have a savings account. I hate shopping for clothes so I would guess the last time I went was about five years ago. Needless to say, I was in desperate need. Same with my hair, it had been about a year since my last cut. I am not very "girlie", but my new years resolution is to be more feminine, so therefore, my shopping spree with my bonus. I appreciate all the thought you put into your post, but I mean really, you trying to take the fun outta my makeover to be more "girlie" or what? My friends tell me it's like night and day, I am even walking more confidently. I think I made the right decision for me, and it felt good.

Oh yeah, my friend called last night and told me about his dog getting attacked by coyotes, needed 2600+ stiches, will be in the hospital for about 3 weeks. I went at lunch and put $200 toward the vet bill. This is for the "donating" part of what whoever that was said. Done. Travis is expected to survive, but he will never be the same.

I contribute the max to my 401k, ...............

You are a bit judgemental, no?

:71526:

The MAX??? The law allows you to contribute so much percentage tax-free...and your boss matches that? By the way, 401K's are ONLY ONE WAY of investing for retirement, there's a slew of other ways to invest into your retirement......your boss should have informed you about ALL of them, and you should choose to invest 50% of any bonus in one of them, which will grow in as little as 5 years to 100% of your bonus....tax free!!!! Did your boss inform you of this?

And, if you think working for your employer should be rewarded by Christmas bonuses instead of fair compensation based upon performance 365 days a year, as ALL PUBLIC EMPLOYEES WHO GET NO BONUSES.....have to do...

If you are a nurse, an EMT, a police/law enforcement/fire fighter......do you think you get a Christmas bonus?

You and your boss have the wrong way of thinking about yearly compensation.. and have the wrong way of thinking of self-indulgence .....

I am very judgmental... if you are in your 30's 20's 40's.. you should be preparing for retirement......if you are 19 years old, you can continue to think of buying clothes to satisfy your ego. If you are in your 50's.....each an every dollar should be going into retirement.

YOU DO KNOW...that 401's are NOT the only tax-free way to save, don't you?

Or are you misinformed, and only want another pair of slacks to satisfy your ego? Just questions you should be thinking about if you are over 19 years of age.

Judge me by my questions.. and feel offended when you think I don't know what old age is about.

LOL @ THE PORN CHANNEL

I was confused that on one hand Justice guy thinks if you can't buy your 'wants' with your regular salary then you should get a new job, while at the same time you should give your bonus to the less fortunate? Hmmmmm then by his way of thinking the 'less fortunate' should just get a better job, huh?

Okay, here we go. I got $1k tax free in the form of a cashier's check (my company doesn't believe in making the employees pay taxes on a gift). ........

Unfortunately the US Tax code thinks differently, the company has to pay the taxes on your "gift" and if you are in the 28% category, your "gift" was really $1280. and you got only $1000 of it. You could have got the full $1280 and invested $640 of it tax free...and earned 5% interest on it, making that $640 turn into $1000, in less than 7 years....all tax free until you retire. Then you could have taken the other $640 and spent it as you wished, paying less than 28% tax on it.....leaving you $450....to spend on dogs, haircuts, clothes.

Just remember, your employer is in the business to make money, not to be an advocate for your retirement under current tax laws. You really need to take a course in how to budget your salary an bonuses. You can do the same with all the money your employer pays you....including good looking haircuts.

My employer compensates me very fairly in ADDITION to my bonuses. I'm not a public employee...if you are and aren't satisfied with your bonus, perhaps you should find a better job?

YOU DO KNOW THAT THERE IS A MAX, TAX FREE CONTRIBUTION for 401k and IRA's correct? My CD's are safe and sound too, so don't worry your pretty head over that.

It is not my employers job to teach me how to secure my future, financially. That is my responsibility.

A Max 401K and IRA contribution is not the worry of anyone under $100.K.........believe me.there are ways to invest that last $10,000 you don't need to live on, when your total income is under $100K a year.

Annuities, Tax free municipal bonds, 401K's IRA's of two types. Other instruments of investment.

You should all be thinking that you can live on 200% of your current salary with taxes when you are 65, 250% at 70 years old, 300% at 75, etc....plan your life to live that way .........$3 a gallon gas now was $.30 in 1965.....42 years ago, when I was just graduating from college.......Did I think that gas would be $3. a gallon then? Do you think there will be a shortage of drinking water in 30 years from now ? How much do you pay for a gallon of pure water now? $1? how about $10 in 30 years?

Think about your future! Think about how what sounds great now, will sound like a pittance in 10 or 20 years.

Ask your employer to pay you fair wages. Basic wages for full time .$10 and all benefits....this will be mandatory in 3 years. Basic management wages...$15 and full benefits. Basic executive wages...$25 an hour with full benefits. This is what Americans need to provide for themselves, their families..2 workers at $25 an hour with benefits, about what you need to raise a family in America today, and send those kids to college, or provide them an adequate education, while building a retirement nest egg.

Tell me I am wrong.

So you are admitting that you would NEVER call the police or the fire department because they are all underpaid? You will put out the fire yourself and shoot the intruder instead of seeking help from Police? Ok.....you are suggesting that ALL police and Fire personnel should look for other jobs and you are not responsible if there is no Police or Fire to respond to your emergency?

By the way, $1000, sounds like a very small bonus to me..sounds like next year if your employer is doing poorly, you will accept a $20 turkey.

Your employer is lucky to have you...but you can do better.

[QUOTE=Justiceguy;9203]The MAX??? snipped.....
You and your boss have the wrong way of thinking about yearly compensation.. and have the wrong way of thinking of self-indulgence ...../QUOTE]

I personally work in the private sector and it isn't until we close out the fiscal year that we know what profits the company has earned. It is at this time that the owner/boss decides how she is going to use those profits. She could very well spend all of the profit on herself, advertising, etc. However she chooses to share the profits with the employees that do such great work all year long to insure that the company is profitable. I would rather earn the average in my area and get a bonus then get a raise this year and have to lose it next year because we weren't so profitable.

I contribute to retirement, I have a diversity of stock, I have savings, I have bonds, my credit cards are paid, i have no car note, or loans. My health insurance is paid 100% (also out of company profits). I contribute to my health account so that I don't have any out of pocket expenses, should a health crisis arise. I donate to children's hospitals and research, and to individuals who I feel could use a helping hand.

So if I am blessed with a bonus, i'll use it as i see fit.

This is what Americans need to provide for themselves, their families..2 workers at $25 an hour with benefits, about what you need to raise a family in America today, and send those kids to college, or provide them an adequate education, while building a retirement nest egg.

Tell me I am wrong.

I make just a bit more than what you call 'executive' wages, which I'm not. Don't know where you got your numbers??? . I have no children. I paid for my own education. My home will be paid for in less than 8 years.

I currently have more than 6 times my annual salary in investmenst (this includes my 401k) I am in my mid 30's.

So yes, you're wrong..... I'll spend my bonus on a new tv and won't fret over surviving retirement.

IMO

WTH are you talking about. You are the one that said public employees didn't get adequate bonuses????

And didn't you say you'd never heard of a binus over$1oo?

[QUOTE=Justiceguy;9203]The MAX??? snipped.....

But maybe I should call one of my 8 financial planners from my work and see what they think. :straight:

NO, I did NOT say that..........re-read and try for meaning.. you are out of the ball park as far as comprehension is concerned.....I said that working for 10 million dollar enterprises, I got $100 maximum..........there are places where people mismanage funds worse than this....but that's my example.

I am on ignore for this closed minded poster. Yes, it is TRUE, few police and fire department employees in the USA, who protect your life and dwellings every ay of the year, no matter which day it is.....NONE of them get bonuses..........you get a bonus because your bosses are stupid as to how to allocate funds..that's my point. and they give you 1/10th of their yearly profits. and keep 9/10ths for themselves........you poor slobs... you do all the work and he gets all the profits, and gives you a dime on his dollar.

Also my ex hubby is a fireman and he gets yearly bonuses based on # of calls, years with the department, etc. The year we had katrina and rita, was a huge bonus. Last year was quiet and not as much.

I NEVER heard of a Fire Department with public funds giving any bonuses, but I support them if they got a bonus......Katrina was certainly worth that....did they invest it in their retirement and their kids' education, or did they waste it on beer and clothes?

I hope their financial advisor told them that bonuses for Fire workers were rare in the USA........most people who enlist in Fire Departments get NO, 0$
bonuses...EVER........consider yourselves lucky if you saw a dollar of this....a hundred thousand Firemen and women don't get what you got.

I worked in law enforcement, loved my job, and in the beginning, they'd give us a turkey for Thanksgiving. :happy0158: I didn't make the best money, but I certainly wouldn't go around insulting people who made more money than I did. If I wanted their job, I would do their job. I wanted my job and I loved it.

How people manage their money is their business. Offering suggestions is one thing, throwing insults is another. It is really that simple.

A European facial is more intense than a regular one. I've a few and different things are done each time. Please, while B is overseas, go and treat yourself to one. It takes me a bit to relax and enjoy it, but after a few minutes, I'm lovin it!!! I'm gonna go and get another one while mine is overseas. If you were closer, we could go together!!! You know that you'll know more when I know what's happening next. That is still a bit away, anyhow. Oh...did I tell you that he may be going over to the other sandbox next? He started talking about that just about the time he left. I have no idea when I'll know if that will happen. yee hawwwww

Some ppl make fun of him for keeping in contact with his DS. But B really looks up to him and learned a lot from him. We were hoping that he would've gotten transferred to Ft Lewis when he made E8 but he didn't.

Does he like it there better than were he is now? Does he have a time frame for the trip?
I was hoping for CA job for him. Then you'd have to come west.

Nona was murdered two years ago. Her boyfriend was found not guilty this summer. The only real evidence points to him, but since he is the one that found her body it was hard for the jury to convict (I guess). Now any justice is totally in God's hands.

Before I became a housewife, I worked for a huge national company managing one of their business offices. Their budget for our Christmas party was $10.00 a head. "Bonuses" were only given to the much higher-ups. The last year I was there, we just asked for the $10.00 so we could go grab a combo meal and a shake from McDonald's. It was absurd....but it seems that the smaller the business, the more generous they are and the better they treat their employees.

My sister is an attorney, and you wouldn't believe the bonus's she gets. It's all based on her billable hours. This year she's getting $9,000.00.
When I worked (RN) we would get a week's pay and a GC for a Butterball turkey. Wait, the turkey was for T'Giving.

I worked for 15 "serious" job years before becoming a stay at home mom for a very large corp. We got 10% of our previous years income and always got our bonus in July when we got our 2 weeks vacation.

I also had a Christmas Club with them where they took $25 a week out of my check and I got that when we got out for Thanksgiving. Just in time for Black Friday. Of course I had 3 children and that's what I used to buy their Christmas plus some left over for w/e I wanted to use it for.

My July bonus usually went toward paying my house off and I did in 10 years.

I have had ONE serious job- by serious I mean jobs I have had since graduating high school. So you would think I got a decent bonus for my 5 years of service. Oh no...not this year...last year I got like 600ish. This year I got 300...and in a check... so after everythihng it was like 270.

My complaint with that is... 1. I got more in previous years. and 2. this year we went off how long you have been here...and so the people that do nothing extra got the same amount. Never mind that I have gotten this company out of many jams this past year and took a huge caseload when we couldnt keep any other case managers, never mind that I had to go back behind other case managers and fix what they screwed up and never mind that dring our surveys and billing audot this year I was the only case manager to stay late every night and help out with not only case management issues but issues in other areas as well. If some one was here just as long as I and did none of that they still got what I did. Making me feel completly unappreciated. Which was what the bonus used to be about. So there is no difference around here if you do your job plus, you just do your job period, or you do your job poorly. And they all wonder why our lower level staff are so unmotivated!

I don't think that either I or my wife has ever gotten a bonus, although I think there was a Thanksgiving turkey one year long ago.

I find the advice from JusticeGuy very interesting. He speaks blithely of making your money work at 5% and up, and all the good ways of preparing for your retirement. And the desirability of finding a better job if you aren't getting paid well enough. I read in the papers all the time about the difficulty many Americans have in saving anything at all. I read that finding a new job is very difficult for most people, and that the job market is extremely tight. I read that some economists think it's outrageous that savings interest in many banks is currently in the vicinity of one percent and below. (I have some CDs bringing me 0.5% at Bank of America.) Above all, I read that we are in what some are calling "the Great Recession," while others just call it a financial disaster.

From what I've read above, many of the members of this board are doing well for themselves, perhaps not spectacularly in most cases, but well enough to include significant bonuses. I'm sure they've earned them, and I'm glad they've got them. I can't imagine myself ever telling anyone what he or she should do with his or her bonus. To me, getting new clothes, or a new hair-do, or a trip to Barbados, are all reasonable uses for a bonus. The only thing I object to are the bonuses that bankers and CEOs of health insurance companies get. But that's a whole other issue, or can or worms, if you prefer.

I'm retired now, but my wife is still working, and NOT getting bonuses. She works for a university that lost a lot of money in the Great Recession, and her salary is frozen. Plainly she chose the wrong line of work, from the point of view of making a lot of money. But a surprising number of otherwise intelligent people do not enter one of the vocations that pay big bucks. I can't imagine why not. Or perhaps I can.
