Former Clark County resident missing
Saturday, March 15, 2008
A 32-year-old woman who is missing under unusual circumstances from her home in Portland is a former longtime Clark County resident.
Heather Dawn Mallory hasn’t been seen or heard from since March 8, according to a bulletin from the Portland Police Bureau.
On March 7, police say, Mallory attended school, worked her entire shift and then spent the night socializing with friends. When she arrived at her Portland home the next morning, she reportedly had an argument with her husband, then left home to avoid the confrontation.
That’s the last time she was seen.
Since then, her family and friends have heard nothing from her, and her accounts have not been used, the bulletin said. Police said it’s highly unusual because Mallory is known to be responsible and professional at her job and has no known history of medical or mental problems.
She and her husband have a small child.
Mallory graduated from Columbia River High School in 1994.
She is white, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 120 pounds, with brown eyes and blond hair. She was driving a bright-red 2001 Ford Focus with Oregon license 061BZX. It has a black bike rack on top and a child seat in the back.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Detective Mike Weinstein at 503-823-0446.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The husband of a missing Portland woman made a plea for help Monday.
Brian Cole said he last saw his wife, Heather Mallory-Cole, at their apartment in southeast Portland on March 8.
Police said the pair had been in an argument just before Mallory-Cole took off. She hasn't been seen since then.
Detectives said there’s been no activity on her bank or credit cards and there have no reported sightings.
Mallory-Cole’s family said her son and her studies at a local culinary school were two motivating factors in her life. They can’t imagine she would abandon either one.
“We got a beautiful little boy at home that really wants to see her,” Cole said. “If anyone could please help us find her, I would do anything for you.”
Mallory-Cole drives a red 2001 Ford Focus with an Oregon license plate of 061 BZX.
She is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 120 pounds with blond hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information on her location is asked to call 911.

This doesn't sound good. I don't like it anymore when wives or girlfriends disappear with the husband or boyfriend the last to see them. Surely at 7:30 in the morning people were up & about. Somebody should have seen something. A red car is hard to miss. Red always catches my eye. In an apartment complex this time of morning somebody needs to start remembering.:girl_sad:

The news is not even reporting on her. Do you want me to send in a PSA to the stations about her? I can fax over something on the letterhead that is on the other thread with a :30 release with her info.
Her husbands myspace was active on the 16th and there is nothing about her on there.

It seems it would be natural to me that husband and wife would argue if she stayed out all night with friends. I know if he was the last to see her & it sounds suspicious but what if she met someone while out and went to meet them after the argument. If foul play maybe happened with someone she met. Just thinking out loud.
Hoping this young wife and mother is found safe very soon.

There are 3 fairly close parks near her residence.
The park that is just blocks from her house only has a small wadding pool and water park feature.
The park to the SW looks like it has a lake or large body of water but there is no city information on that park.
The second closes park to the residence doesn't have any water areas but is over 600 acres of nature paths and hiking trails.
PP&R has adopted a procedure for closing the trail system during the wet season in order to protect the soil and surface of the butte. Due to the poor construction of the original trail system, water is channeled down the trails increasing the down-cutting and soil erosion. Most of the trails are soft surface which is particularly vulnerable to bicycle and horse usage. As funding and volunteers are available, PP&R is working on trail surface treatments that prevent erosion and drain water away from the trail. As trail surface conditions improve, the trail system will allow for longer periods of use during the wet season.
WINTER HOURS 7am - 6pm
I know this is all speculation on my part but those would be place of interest around her house.

The reward is for $1,000. Police said Heather's credit card has not been used since the day she disappeared.
"I just want her to come home," Brian Cole said. "We have a beautiful little boy at home that wants to see her."

Heather Dawn Mallory
Since their daughter went missing on March 8, Steve and Jeni Mallory have tried to stay positive.
“It’s always on my mind,” Gig Harbor’s Jeni Mallory said about Heather Dawn Mallory’s disappearance. “That’s why I go to work. I believe distractions are healthy. I believe you should stay busy. I don’t think you should stay home and dwell.”
In this mysterious case, it’s hard for the Mallorys not to feel confused — or to spend hours wondering what happened.
Heather Dawn Mallory, 32, has not been seen or heard from since 10:30 a.m. March 8, when she left her home in Portland, Ore., after an argument with her husband, Brian Cole, 35.
Mallory’s car, a red 2001 Ford Focus, has not been found, and there has been no activity on her cell phone or credit cards.
Her parents say this kind of behavior is not typical of their daughter. They said that no matter where she lived, Mallory stayed in communication with her family, which still lives in Gig Harbor.
After graduating from Peninsula High School, Mallory has lived in many places, including Los Angeles, Lakewood and Tacoma. She moved to Portland almost four years ago, and she soon met and married her husband and had a son, River, 3.
Mallory had been in regular contact with her parents. Jeni Mallory said she called her daughter once or twice a week and visited Portland once a month. The Mallorys had last seen their daughter on Feb. 23, when they celebrated her birthday in Portland.
The Portland Police Department said Mallory is “professional and responsible” and unlikely to run away.
“She’s never done this. She doesn’t have a history of doing this,” said Catherine Kent, public information officer for the PPD. “Everybody seems to be cooperating. If they knew where she was, they’d tell us.”
But the details surrounding Mallory’s disappearance remain fuzzy.
On March 7, after finishing school at the Portland Culinary Institute and working her first night at a part-time catering job, Mallory reportedly went out with a group of friends. She stayed out all night, returning home at 7:30 the next morning.
After Mallory arrived home, she had an argument with Cole. She left a few hours later and has not been seen or heard from since.
Mallory reportedly did not pack a bag or take any possessions before leaving. Jeni Mallory said Heather’s “toothpaste, toothbrush and makeup” were still at her Portland home.
“That’s part of the puzzle,” Jeni Mallory said. “Just the day before, (Heather) was sharing with a girlfriend from Oklahoma how excited she was ... and she was looking forward to her job.”
When Cole called the Mallorys on March 9 to tell them that Heather was missing, Steve Mallory started doing his own investigating. Cole gave him permission to look at Heather’s old phone bills, trying to find out who, if anyone, she had recently called.
A day later, the PPD’s Missing Persons Unit got involved, interviewing more than 60 of Mallory’s friends, checking airports, train stations and bus depots for her car. In all, the unit has spent more than 700 hours in the past month searching for her around the Portland area.
On March 14, the Mallorys took a trip to Portland, where they spent four days hanging fliers around town and meeting with the police, whom Jeni Mallory said have “been fabulous” about communicating with the family.
But there has still been no word from their daughter.
“Every telephone call, you wonder if that’s something going on, which is really nerve-wracking,” Steve Mallory said. “I break down probably five times a day. It’s just little things hit you, and it’s such a terrible feeling, personally, to have to go through this.”
Despite Mallory’s argument with her husband before her disappearance, Cole is not currently a suspect in the case. The PPD has no evidence of foul play.
“It could be because she didn’t want to go home,” Jeni Mallory said about why her daughter spent the night at a friend’s house the night before she disappeared. “There is a history there, but I don’t want to get into that.”
Steve Mallory was careful not to comment on any foul play surrounding the case, since he feels that sort of investigation is the job of the police.
“I think it was not the best of marriages,” he said. “They had arguments. But rather — I just don’t think they were at the level that would involve suspicion. You just don’t know, and so you just let the police take care of it.”
For now, Mallory’s parents hope she returns home safely.

"It's always on my mind," Gig Harbor's Jeni Mallory said about Heather Dawn Mallory's disappearance. "That's why I go to work. I believe distractions are healthy. I believe you should stay busy. I don't think you should stay home and dwell."
Her parents say this kind of behavior is not typical of their daughter. Mallory had been in regular contact with her parents. Jeni Mallory said she called her daughter once or twice a week and visited Portland once a month. The Mallorys had last seen their daughter on Feb. 23, when they celebrated her birthday in Portland.
The Portland Police Department said Mallory is "professional and responsible" and unlikely to run away. "She's never done this. She doesn't have a history of doing this," said Catherine Kent, public information officer for the PPD. "Everybody seems to be cooperating. If they knew where she was, they'd tell us."
The PPD's Missing Persons Unit has interviewed more than 60 of Mallory's friends, checking airports, train stations and bus depots for her car. In all, the unit has spent more than 700 hours in the past month searching for her around the Portland area.
The Mallory family has posted fliers around the Portland area, but there has still been no word from their daughter.
"Every telephone call, you wonder if that's something going on, which is really nerve-wracking," Steve Mallory said. "I break down probably five times a day. It's just little things hit you, and it's such a terrible feeling, personally, to have to go through this."
Heather Dawn Mallory was last seen in Portland, Ore., at 10:30 a.m. on March 8. She was reportedly driving a bright red 2001 Ford Focus bearing Oregon license plate 061BZX. There was a black-colored bike rack on top of the car and a child seat in the back seat.
Mallory is a 5-foot-5, 120-pound white female with blonde hair and brown eyes.
Details on her case were posted on the America's Most Wanted Web site last week. Visit www.amw.com/missing_persons/case.cfm?id=54238 for more information.
Crime Stoppers is also offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to a resolution in Mallory's case. Those who may have information are asked to call 503-823-HELP.

Missing woman's parents say they suspect her husband
12:44 PM PDT on Friday, May 2, 2008
By TERESA BLACKMAN, kgw.com Staff
The parents of a Portland woman who vanished without a trace last March said they suspect her husband is somehow behind her mysterious disappearance.
Heather Mallory Cole, 32, disappeared in early March after an argument with her husband, Brian. Police have not named him as a suspect.
Heather's parents spoke at a news conference at the University Club Friday and said they are desperate to get her back.
"It's terribly frustrating," her father, Steve Mallory said. "For me personally, I'm crying several times a day."
"It's like wearing a lead jacket all the time," Heather's mother, Jeni added. "It's very heavy. I go to bed feeling very heavy."
$6,000 in reward money
A $5,000 reward was announced during the news conference. Heather had worked at the University Club in Portland, and the company raised the money for the reward. This adds to a previous reward of $1,000 offered by the police department.
When asked why Brian was not at the press conference, Heather's parents said they had told him to stay home. They also said that the couple had been having financial problems and were struggling in their marriage.
Heather and Brian have a young son named River and family members don't think she would intentionally leave without him.
Days after her disappearance, Brian made a plea on television for her return.
"I just want her to come home," he said. "We have a beautiful little boy at home that wants to see her."
Friends last saw Heather on March 7
The last day friends reported seeing Heather was on Friday, March 7. She attended school and worked her entire shift. After work, she spent the night socializing with friends and arrived home about 7:30 a.m. the next day, police said.
Based on information obtained from family and friends, investigators believe it is highly unusual for Heather to remain out of contact. She was also described as professional and responsible in her work habits. Investigators also said Heather's credit card has not been used since the day she disappeared.
“After she arrived home, she became involved in an argument with her husband. Heather reportedly left home to avoid further confrontation and has not been seen or heard from since,” said Sgt. Brian Schamutz, spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau.
Heather was reportedly driving a bright red 2001 Ford Focus bearing Oregon license 061BZX. There is a black-colored bike rack on top of the car and a child seat in the back seat. Heather stands 5’5” and weighs 120 pounds.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call 9-1-1 or 503-823-0446.

Reward offered in search for missing young woman
Posted by Maxine Bernstein, The Oregonian May 02, 2008 13:11PM
The University Club Friday announced a $5,000 reward for any information that would help find 32-year-old Heather Mallory Cole, who has not been since she left her Southeast Portland home on March 8.
University Club members and staff, along with Heather's parents, pleaded for some information that would help answer the gnawing questions and locate the woman.
The $5,000 reward is in addition to a Crime Stoppers award of up to $1,000 for information in the missing case.
The night before her disappearance, the young woman had attended Oregon Culinary Institute. She spent the night socializing with friends, and slept at a friend's home after having a few drinks. She arrived home about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 8.
Once home, she became involved in an argument with her husband, 35-year-old Brian Cole. She reportedly left home awhile later and has not been seen or heard from since.
"The feeling is we have to do something to again draw attention to Heather, and her disappearance, " said her mother, Jeni Mallory, speaking at the University Club Friday morning.
Heather had worked at the club as a server for 3 ½ years. Early this year, she had enrolled in culinary school and only worked private parties, weddings and weekends at the club.
"I have no idea if I'm ever going to see her again, and that's very disturbing," her mother said.
Heather was reportedly driving a bright red 2001 Ford Focus bearing Oregon license 061BZX. There is a black-colored bike rack on top of the car and a child seat in the back seat. Heather is a 5-foot-5, 120-pound woman with blonde hair and brown eyes.
"After 55 days, this is just an extraordinarily unacceptable situation," said Robert Parsons, general manager of the University Club.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Mike Weinstein, of the Portland Police Bureau's missing persons unit at 503-823-0446. They can also contact Crime Stoppers at 503-823-HELP (4357).

Missing Woman's Parents Ask For Help, Raise Reward
Police Still Have No Leads In Case
POSTED: 4:11 pm PDT May 2, 2008
UPDATED: 5:15 pm PDT May 2, 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The family of a missing Portland woman deliver a tearful plea for help Friday afternoon raising the amount of the reward and asking anyone with information to come forward.
The parents of Heather Mallory Cole, 32, said she disappeared after having an argument with her husband on the morning of March 8 and hasn't been seen or heard from since.
Her family said she would never disappear on her own; they fear the worst but are hopeful she may still be alive.
"We have done everything we can as parents to find her," Cole's father, Steve Mallory, said.
Cole's parents said, as they fought back tears, that for 55 days they've searched parks, river banks and the mountains with no sign of their daughter.
Her parents said they've been crying daily.
"It's like wearing a lead jacket all the time. I go to bed feeling very heavy," Cole's mother, Jeni Mallory, said.
Portland detectives said Cole went to school -- where she has been working toward a career as a chef -- and work as usual on Friday March 7 and then stayed out all night with friends getting home to her husband and 3-year-old son around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police said after Cole returned home that morning she and her husband had an argument.
It's unclear what happened next. Police said Cole's car was seen leaving the apartment complex but they aren't sure who was driving.
"We just feel somebody out there knows something, somebody has too," Jeni Mallory said.
The car has never been found, her bank accounts and credit cards are untouched and no one has seen or heard from her since.
"She had a $400 or $500 check sitting on the counter so the chances of leaving without money is not very high," Steve Mallory said.
Heather Cole filed a restraining order against her husband, Brian Cole, in October 2006 but while police call her disappearance suspicious they haven't named any suspects.
Heather's parents worry they may never find their daughter.
Cole's car is a red 2001 Ford Focus with black bike racks and the Oregon license plate number is 061bzx.
A $5,000 reward was added to the $1,000 CrimeStoppers reward already being offered.
If you have any information about this case, call Portland police.

I heard on the news that her car was found 2 weeks ago but they are not giving any details.
They also said that she had a restraining order on her husband (a few years ago?) but dropped it after 4 days.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Investigators served a search warrant at the apartment of a missing woman's husband Wednesday.
Heather Mallory Cole disappeared more than 11 weeks ago and police have reason to believe her husband, Brian Cole, may be involved.
Crime scene investigators showed up at the couple's southeast Portland apartment Wednesday night with rubber gloves, flashlights, cameras and other equipment.
Heather Mallory Cole hasn't been seen since March 8, when she returned home on a Saturday morning after a night out with friends. Police said Cole had a fight with her husband that morning and they described her disappearance as highly suspicious.
When she disappeared, her cell phone and credit card activity stopped. Police said they found a car belonging to Heather Mallory Cole at least one month ago.
The couple has had problems in their marriage in the past. In October 2006, Heather Mallory Cole filed a restraining order against her husband.
Police have not specified the reason behind their search of Cole's apartment and it's unclear if the search gave them any new evidence in the case.
Brian Cole wasn't at the apartment when police searched it Wednesday night. He has not been arrested.

It sure seems suspicious to me that Heather has been gone so long and the police are just now getting a search warrant for her apartment. Heather has been gone to long with no activity on her accounts or phone. I really hope her parents get some answers soon.

On April 11, 2008, we featured Heather Malloy on this blog, including the fact she was granted a Court Order of Protection.
http://murphymilanojournal.blogspot.com/search/label/Heather%20Malloy
Her husband Brian, indicated she vanished. Why is it that eleven weeks later, Portland Police are just now, investigating this case and searching the marital home for clues?
Police Departments of late have shown the inability to look first at the obvious. Especially, when these women are married or involved with someone and suddenly, "Vanish". The first order of business by all Law Enforcement Agencies across the Country is to check their data bases to see if there was ever an order of protection issued. Or if the couple is going through a divorce.
More importantly, we are seeing a trend in the vanishing and missing cases, they are not properly investigated within a time frame likely to produce an arrest in their cases. Or because "too much" time has passed important evidence has vanished with its' victims.
Proper training and good old fashioned detective work must be mandatory. Anyone interested in solving these types of cases can contact me at contact@movingoutmovingon.com and I will be more than happy to consult and provide effective resources and training for these of specialized cases.

Police search apartment for clues to missing woman
Posted by Stuart Tomlinson, The Oregonian May 29, 2008 08:37AM
Categories: Breaking News
Police officers last night and this morning searched a Southeast Portland apartment that had been shared by a missing woman, her husband and three-year old son.
Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, said investigators were looking for clues or evidence into the March disappearance of 32-year-old Heather Mallory Cole.
The night before her disappearance, Cole attended classes at the Oregon Culinary Institute. She then spent the night socializing with friends, and slept at a friend's home after having a few drinks. She arrived home about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 8.
There, she reportedly got into an argument with her husband, 35-year-old Brian Cole. She reportedly left their apartment with no money -- leaving a $400 to $500 check behind on a counter --and has not been seen or heard from since. There has been no credit card activity, no cell phone use and no contact with family or friends, Schmautz said. Police found her car in Portland a few weeks after she vanished.
"What really concerned us was the fact that she never tried to contact her son, something she always did,'' Schmautz said. "She was devoted to her son."
Police would not reveal what evidence, if any, they discovered at the apartment.
"This is still an open investigation and we're going to keep going until we have a resolution,'' Schmautz said.
Officials searched the apartment the family shared at 11837 SE Raymond Street for several hours. Brian Cole and the couple's son, River, have since moved to Idaho.
Since her disappearance, her parents, Steve and Jeni Mallory have searched parks and riverbanks, posted fliers around the city and enlisted the help of police and psychics to help bring back their daughter.
The Mallorys said her daughter and Brian Cole had a strained 4-1/2 year marriage.
According to court documents, Heather filed a restraining order against her husband in October 2006. In the petition for the order, she called Brian Cole a "ticking time bomb with loads of anger festering inside of him... I cannot trust him to be around me or my son right now."
At the time, Brian Cole was unemployed and had struck his wife in the chest, causing severe pain, according to court records.
Earlier this year, Cole enrolled in culinary school after working as a server at the University Club in downtown Portland. The club has offered a $5,000 reward for information that would help locate Cole. The reward is in addition to a Crime Stoppers award of up to $1,000 for information in the case.

Police Look For Break In Missing Woman Case
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Police may be closer to figuring out what happened to a missing mother after searching the apartment she shared with her husband and 3-year-old son.
Heather Mallory-Cole hasn't been seen since March 8.
Both her parents and her husband said they don't know where she is, and police will say only that they're doing what they have to do to find Mallory-Cole.
Her father hopes their search will turn up some new information.
"We have done just about everything we can as parents to try and find her," Heather's father, Steve Mallory, said.
He called the search of his daughter's apartment last night "a positive move" by police. They broke into the apartment last night, with a search warrant and a platoon of forensics experts.
Mallory said Brian Cole was planning on moving out this weekend.
In a press conference held in March, Brian Cole and Heather Mallory-Cole's parents asked for help finding the missing woman.
"I just want anybody that's got any information as to where Heather is to please, please call us," Brian Cole said in March.
She had stayed out with friends the night before, and had an argument with Brian Cole on March 8 when she returned to their Southeast Raymond Street apartment. She left, and has not been seen since. That argument wasn't the first time the couple had problems: Heather sought a restraining order against her husband in 2006.
When Mallory was asked Thursday whether he suspects Brian Cole, he said it varies.
"I waver. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. It's a very difficult thing. I just don't have all the evidence that the police does," Mallory said.
He said one thing is for sure, though, his daughter did not go away of her own free will.
"She would not have left her son. (I am) absolutely certain of that. I think foul play is definitely involved," Mallory said.
He said Brian Cole is staying with his mother in northern Idaho, and the couple's son is in day care there.
No one has yet been charged in the disappearance of Heather Mallory-Cole.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police searched an apartment in southeast Portland late Wednesday night in the hopes of finding some leads in the disappearance of a woman.
Heather Mallory Cole, 32, was reported missing March 8 from the apartment where she lived with her husband.
Police said her husband has been cooperating with their investigation. He told KATU News that he would never hurt Cole.
Police did not confirm if the apartment they searched was the one in which Heather lived, but the search did take place in the complex where the apartment is located.
A neighbor told KATU News that the search did take place in Cole's apartment but that was not confirmed by investigators.
Police have not said if any leads or discoveries were found as a result of the search.
One witness told police they believed they saw Cole's car being driven out of the lot on the day she disappeared.
There is a $6,000 reward for information that helps resolves the case.

Husband of missing woman fails lie detector test, doesn't know why
Story Updated: May 31, 2008 at 12:32 AM PDT
By Anita Kissee and KATU Web Staff Video PORTLAND, Ore. - A local mother mysteriously vanishes and now comes word that her husband failed a lie detector test, despite being adamant that he had nothing to do with her disappearance.
I was offered a voluntary lie detector (test) and I said 'ok, I'll come in and take it to clear my name' and it completely backfired on me," said Brian Cole.
Heather Mallory Cole, 32, disappeared March 8 from the southeast Portland apartment where she lived with her husband. The two had gotten into a fight and she drove off into the night, never to be heard from again.
Heather's car was later found abandoned and her credit cards and cell phone have not been used.
So what happened to her? That is what police are trying to figure out.
This week, investigators searched the couple's apartment and confiscated a computer, paperwork and Brian Cole's truck.
Police have never called Brian Cole a suspect and even Heather's in-laws say they are not jumping to conclusions.
I am staying absolutely neutral with Brian," said Jeni Mallory, Heather's mother. "Brian is the father of River and I adore River and he's a good dad and I'm staying absolutely neutral."
When we asked Brian Cole what he would say to the naysayers who think he did something to his wife, he wasn't really sure what to say.
"I don't know what to say to them because they're going to think what they want to think already," he said. "It's a crappy situation to be in."
When we caught up with Brian Cole on Friday, he was moving out of his apartment because his lease was up.
"It's tough going through all of our stuff," he said. "We just had our third anniversary, wedding anniversary."
Cole is planning on living in Idaho with family because he says he needs financial help.

Today marking four months since Heather disappeared, it's upsetting how little local media coverage I'm find on her. I miss Heather alot. She radiated positive energy and good outlook on life that I would like to experience again, right now or someday soon. I don't believe she would be gone this long on her own accord. With no trace. A crime has been committed and the FBI should be involved, the news should be talking about it, a round of polygraphs for everyone. There's a million people in this city. Half the people I talk to about "my friend...she's missing" become concerned on the spot, while admitting they've never heard of her. That's part of the problem.

Mallory still missing; foul play suspected
Husband is a ‘person of interest’ in the case
Paige Richmond
of the Gateway
Published: 11:19AM July 10th, 2008
A former Gig Harbor woman remains missing nearly four months after she disappeared from Portland, Ore.
Heather Dawn Mallory, 32, has not been seen or heard from since 10:30 a.m. March 8, when she left her home in Portland after an argument with her husband, Brian Cole, 35.
Mallory’s parents, Jeni and Steve, are Gig Harbor residents. Mallory graduated from Peninsula High School and moved around the Pacific Northwest — including places in Lakewood and Tacoma — before settling down in Portland almost four years ago. She met and married her husband, and then had a son, River, soon afterward.
There have been few developments in the case since April 2, when the story was first reported in the Gateway. Mallory’s car, a red 2001 Ford Focus, was located a few weeks later.
The Portland Police Department hasn’t released any details about the car’s condition, but homicide detectives joined the investigation soon after the car was located, said Portland Police Spokesman Brian Schmaltz.
When Mallory first disappeared, the PPD did not suspect foul play.
“There is a lot of speculation in cases like these,” Schmaltz said, “But we don’t typically confirm anything.”
Although no other details — including the names of any suspects — have been officially released, the police told Jeni Mallory that her son-in-law was a person of interest. Cole was not initially a suspect when the investigation began in March.
“They seem pretty intent on building a case against Brian,” Jeni Mallory said.
On May 28, Jeni Mallory said the PPD searched the Coles’ former apartment. Brian Cole moved to Idaho with his son not long after the investigation began.
Jeni Mallory is not sure about her son-in-law’s involvement in her daughter’s disappearance.
“Could he have created a situation where Heather was fed up and worried about her own life? Sure,” she said. “But did he do anything to her? I’m not convinced.”
For now, Jeni Mallory is thankful for the outpouring of community support she has received in Gig Harbor. She still regularly receives cards from concerned friends and family — which gives her hope that Heather will someday return home safely.
“I miss my daughter more now,” she said. “I’ve never been away from her for this long.”

Welcome to HFTM Maven O'Meliora.
I'm so sorry about your friend, Heather, missing. I hope LE will make an arrest soon. Her husband is a POI and hopefully LE are getting their ducks in a row before making an arrest of him.

Maven, I have been drawn into this case ever since I first read about it.
I hope and pray that Heather is found and safely reunited with her family and young child. Sadly, so much time has passed without any word which leads me to believe something awful has happened.
Can you tell us if there is a MySpace or other site dedicated to help bring awareness about Heather's disappearance?

I truly hope the husband wasn't directly involved in Heather's disappearance although statistics say otherwise. It just breaks my heart when a child loses a parent at the hands of the other and is then left with no parent at all. My prayers go out to Heather's parents and her sweet little boy that she will be found safe and brought home.

What happened to Heather?
Last Update: 11/13 8:08 pm
Heather Mallory stayed out all night partying on March 8th and came home to her southeast Portland apartment the next morning.
Her husband, Brian Cole, confronted her about her all-nighter.
That was the last known time anyone saw Mallory alive.
Cole says she left after the argument. Police think she’s dead but have yet to find a body. Her car was found abandoned, and her cell phone has had zero activity. Neither has her credit card.
Steve and Jeni Mallory—Heather’s parents—talk to police every week hoping something turns up. While they still have hope, what her parents really want is closure.
Cole took and failed a voluntary lie detector after Mallory went missing, but he is not listed as a suspect, only a ‘person of interest.’

While the husband certainly has some question marks around him, I just want to note that lie detector tests are notoriously unreliable. That is why the judicial system is so uncomfortable with them.
That noted, Cole has a lot of explaining to do. I pray for Justice for Mallory and her family.

Powellhurst-Gilbert mother vanishes without a trace
Police are baffled regarding the disappearance of a 32-year-old outer East Portland woman. Give them a solid lead, and you could get $1,000 from Crime Stoppers …

32-year-old Heather Dawn Mallory, seen here in her "chef whites" was taking classes at Oregon Culinary Institute downtown before she vanished without a trace on March 8.
Story by David F. Ashton
CRIME STOPPERS case #08-13 reads like a fictional detective story we'd see on TV – but it is not. This case is very real.
Police are so concerned about locating 32-year-old Heather Dawn Mallory, they've assigned it to their Missing Persons Unit and have Crime Stoppers has issued a $1,000 reward for information.
On Friday, March 7, 2008, Mallory attended classes at Oregon Culinary Institute and worked the entire shift at her job, says Portland Police Bureau's Detective Tim Sukimoto.
After work, she spent the night socializing with several friends and arrived at her Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood home, about a half a block from Raymond Park about 10:30 am, Saturday, March 8.

Police ask you to be on the lookout for Mallory's car – a bright red 2001 Ford Focus with Oregon plates 061BZX.
Disappears after a domestic dispute
After Mallory arrived home, she became involved in an argument with her husband, 35-year-old Brian Cole. She reportedly left home awhile later and has not been seen or heard from since.
Mallory reportedly left in a bright red 2001 Ford Focus bearing Oregon license 061BZX. There is a black-colored bike rack on top of the car and a child seat in the back seat.
Mallory is the mother of a 3-year-old child and has no prior history of being missing.
Described as a normal person
Based on information obtained from family and friends, investigators believe it is highly unusual for Heather to remain out of contact. She has been described as professional and responsible in her work habits. Mallory has no known history of mental illness or medical issues.
Investigators have confirmed that there has been no electronic activity on any of her accounts. At this time, detectives have no evidence of foul play. However, Heather's sudden disappearance and lack of any contact to family or friends, whatsoever, is considered highly suspicious.

One year later, police still searching for missing mom Heather Mallory

"We're kind of at the point where we need a break. We need someone to help us. We need someone to tell us something."

Heather Dawn Mallory
Detective Jim McCausland has spent nearly a year trying find Heather Mallory. He's honest. He has a lot of evidence, but leads in the case have dried up.
He and a team of three fellow investigators, two district attorneys and one supervisor discuss the case daily.
"Whoever's responsible had a head start and we know that and we work hard to catch up," says McCausland.
It was March 8, 2008 when Heather Mallory was last seen alive. After a night out with friends, she returned to her southeast Portland apartment to an argument with her husband Brian Cole. Cole says Mallory drove off angry and left him and their three year old son River behind. Days later, Cole begged for the public's help.
"If anybody could help us find her, I would do anything for you," offered Cole during a March 17, news conference.
For a little more than a week, the Portland Police Bureau approached Heather's case as one of a missing person. But, quickly McCausland and his homicide team began to focus on Brian Cole.
"He's her husband. He's the last person to see her alive," explains McCausland.
Detectives located Mallory's red Ford Focus in an undisclosed location. With no activity on her credit cards, bank accout or cell phone, McCausland brought Brian Cole in for questioning. He also took a lie detector test and failed.
Cole revealed the existance of the test and his failure to Newschannel 8's Scott Burton last May.
Burton: The logical question then is, did you have anything to do with Heather's disappearance?
Cole: No
Burton: Did you kill her?
Cole: No
Burton: Do you know where she is?
Cole: No.
Though the Police Bureau would not comment on the test or Cole's failure then, we now know it was a dramatic moment in the investigation.
"It certainly causes you to look harder at that person. I know that I thought, 'Wow. He did it. Now I have to prove it'" recalls McCausland.
McCausland served a search warrant on Heather and Brian's apartment. He seized a computer, receipts, paperwork and Brian Cole's truck. Hours later Cole packed his bags and moved to Sandpoint, Idaho. He took his son, Heather's son, River with him.
"She's missing from the Portland metro area and you're just leaving?" questions McCausland.
Brian Cole remains in Idaho to this day. According to Jim McCausland, Cole has not called a single time since moving to Idaho and has shown no outward interest in the investigation.
"You know it's a year on Sunday. It's emotional to a lot of people. It's emotional to me and you know he's not there. So I guess that's how I answer that."
Newschannel 8 attempted to contact Brian Cole on his cell phone for comment to McCausland's discussion of the case. Our calls were never returned.
On Sunday March 8, 2009, Heather's family plans to hold a candlelight rememberance for Heather. It's been a long year since she's left.
In the year since Heather disappeared, Jim McCausland and his homicide team had never spoken publicly about the Mallory case. But now with thousands of eyes once again focused on her disappearance he hopes someone will have the final piece to the puzzle.
"It's been a year and it's time. Make the call. Whether it's anonymous or directly to us. Give Heather the respect she deserves."

I was so hoping that Heather would have been found by now. This whole situation is just raising to many red flags for me. Supposedly her and Brian had a fight and she just took off without her son. I also have to ask why did Brian move to Idaho where his parents are so fast after Heather disappeared? I would think no matter where he lived he would want to know what is going on with the investigation.
There are just to many questions to make me feel comfortable about Heather leaving on her own.
My prayers go out to Heathers family. This has got to be so hard on her family.
