Volunteers to renew their search for Stacy Peterson
March 15, 2008
FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS
BOLINGBROOK -- A group dedicated to uncovering the mystery of where Stacy Peterson went is preparing to resume its volunteer effort to find the missing mother.
"We can't wait to get out and find Stacy," said Sharon Bychowski, a member of the board of directors for the group the Friends of Stacy Peterson.
Bychowski's son, Roy Taylor, met with the state police Friday.
"The Illinois State Police are more than willing to work with us," Taylor said. "They will be communicating with the searches for Stacy Peterson and utilizing our resources."
Peterson disappeared Oct. 28. State police consider her disappearance a "potential homicide" and named her husband, Drew Peterson, a suspect in the case. Drew Peterson has not participated in the volunteer searches.
Taylor said he hopes to begin the searches next weekend, weather permitting, and that he "will try to release information (on upcoming searches) early every week until we find her or the season ends."
Bychowski had placed a large picture of Stacy in her front yard. The sign includes the state police tip line, (815) 740-0678. She urged anyone with information to call it. On Friday, Bychowski moved the sign to the front yard of her neighbor, Debbie Macikas.
"They are so excited searching for Stacy that they have asked me to share the sign," Bychowski said. "Everywhere she goes, she looks good."

The attorney for Drew Peterson has gone on the attack against neighbors of his client, accusing them of cyber-stalking and organizing ways to harass him.
"They're keeping track of where he goes, what he does and who he sees," said Joel Brodsky, Peterson's attorney. "They're also in the course of putting up [Find Stacy Peterson] signs along where he drives. . . . Then you put on top of that their own statements [that they] do these things to make his life miserable, that is a course of conduct designed to cause Drew substantial emotional distress."
Brodsky handed over his information to the FBI.
"We will review it in consultation with the U.S. attorney's office and determine if additional investigation is warranted," FBI spokesman Ross Rice said.
On Tuesday, two vehicles seized during a search of Peterson's Bolingbrook home were returned to him under a judge's order.
Peterson, 54, is a suspect in the Oct. 28 disappearance of his wife, Stacy, who was 23 at the time. The former Bolingbrook police sergeant has been dueling with his next door neighbor, Sharon Bychowski, since Stacy vanished. Bychowski was a close friend of Stacy, and she has taken exception to Peterson's stance that Stacy ran off with another man.
Late last month, Bychowski put up signs asking "Where is Stacy?" in her house windows, as well as a 3-by-4-foot sign outside her home. She said four of her neighbors in their cul-de-sac plan to rotate the large sign in their yards.
"We're hoping for the hundreds of people who drive through the court every week, [someone] will have the courage to call the tip line," Bychowski said.
Brodsky said Peterson is being harassed. His client has been the target of ridicule and threats on blogs and online forums.
At times when the news media attention is especially intense, Peterson gets as many as several death threats a week, Brodsky said.
"It's a mob mentality that has run away, but there are laws that I assume will be enforced," Brodsky said. "The people who are responsible are not only the posters but the people who run the Web site and allow these postings to take place."
Bychowski counters that she's the one being threatened. She said Peterson, who has a garage door opener that she gave to Stacy, was opening and closing her garage door to irritate her Tuesday.
She changed the garage's programming.
"He's trying to torment me because I'm not giving up on finding Stacy Peterson," Bychowski said. "I'm not now, not ever, giving up on Stacy Peterson."
Brodsky said there was an explanation for the garage door opening.
After Illinois State Police returned Peterson's GMC Yukon Denali and Pontiac Grand Prix, there were a number of garage door openers in one car, Brodsky said, and Peterson started pushing each to see which opened his own garage.
"When Drew pushed one of the garage door openers, it must have inadvertently opened Sharon's garage," Brodsky said. "Drew didn't even know he did it."

By JOE HOSEY Staff Writer
BOLINGBROOK -- Tensions on Pheasant Chase Court escalated as a second police report was filed in the past five days, and one resident says her life is in jeopardy.
"I fear for my life," said Sharon Bychowski, the best friend and next-door neighbor of missing mom Stacy Peterson.
Stacy's husband, Drew Peterson, is still in the house and Bychowski said that is why she is scared.
State police named Peterson a suspect in his wife's disappearance and have called the case a "potential homicide." State police also are revisiting the mysterious March 2004 apparent bathtub drowning of his previous wife, Kathleen Savio, a death they initially found to be accidental.
In the aftermath of Stacy's disappearance, Savio's body was exhumed for additional examination and a forensic pathologist determined she was the victim of a homicide, contradicting the opinion of the state police.
Bychowski said that alone was enough to make her nervous, but Tuesday she was flat out scared.
"In the event that anything happens to me, I want the public to know I fear for my life," Bychowski said. "I feel closer to Stacy and Kathleen than ever."
Bychowski's recent trepidation was induced by Peterson's newfound and brief ability to open and close her garage door at will.
Peterson reclaimed his two cars from the state police Tuesday morning. Inside the cars he found three garage door openers. One was programmed to open Bychowski's garage. Drew said he was unaware of this until he hit the button and Bychowski's garage opened.
Bychowski said she gave Stacy the opener so she could store items there for a garage sale. She says she told the state police of the opener and that she believed it was in Peterson's home. Somehow, they failed to find it.
"They said they searched the car," she said. "They looked in the car. It was not in there. They looked in the house, it was not in there."
Bychowski's son, Roy Taylor, was skeptical of Peterson's account.
"I physically watched him look at the house and hit the button," he said. Bychowski then called the police, and two officers responded.
"They were sneaking up on me, like they were going to catch me doing something," Peterson said.
The officers asked Peterson to surrender the opener, and even offered to replace it, said police Lt. Ken Teppel, but he refused, claiming it belonged to him.
The matter was recorded in a police report, the second since Friday, when Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, said Taylor was harassing and threatening Peterson via the Internet. Police spoke to Bychowski and Taylor, but took no action. Taylor denies Brodsky's allegations.
Taylor said he reprogrammed his mother's garage door opener Tuesday to keep Peterson from fiddling with it, but Bychowski said she wanted a restraining order against Peterson.
"Then I'll get one on her and Roy," said Peterson, who also spoke of his wish to leave the bad blood in his subdivision behind, if only he could.
"What am I supposed to do?" Peterson asked, explaining his missing wife's name is on the title to their home.
"I can't move," he said. "Stacy owns the house."

Woman Says Peterson Won't Return Her Garage Door Opener
BOLINGBROOK, Ill. -- There's new trouble for Drew Peterson, just a day after he reclaimed his vehicles from Bolingbrook investigators.
One of his neighbors is going to court to file a restraining order against him.
The recent controversy follows the return of two cars to Peterson that were impounded by police investigating the disappearance of his wife, Stacy.
His next-door neighbor, Sharon Bychowski, said her garage door opener was in Stacy Peterson's car and that, as Drew Peterson was checking different openers on Tuesday, he opened her garage.
She said when she demanded the opener back, he refused.
The neighbor now says she wants a judge to decide.

Peterson allegedly still had pistol after authorities seized his weapons
Tribune staff report
10:55 PM CDT, March 19, 2008
A former friend of Drew Peterson said Wednesday that he was called into an Illinois State Police station and asked to identify a gun that Peterson allegedly still had after authorities seized his weapons.
Richard Mims stayed at Peterson's home in the days after the Oct. 28 disappearance of Peterson's wife, Stacy. During the initial investigation, using multiple search warrants, police seized 11 guns, as well as iPods, computers, backpacks and Peterson's 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and 2005 GMC Yukon Denali.
But Mims said police apparently missed at least one gun. The night of a search in November, Mims said Peterson showed him a folding gun that was strapped to his leg. Mims, who later had a falling out with Peterson, said he alerted police and media outlets about the weapon a few weeks ago.
"Today, Illinois State Police recovered a pistol that they think was Drew's. And it is his pistol," Mims said. "It's the same one that he pulled out when I was staying at his house. They'd already seized his other guns."
Peterson, 54, is a suspect in his wife's disappearance. He denies any wrongdoing.
Mims said Wednesday that police also showed him a .357-caliber pistol and asked whether he could identify it as Peterson's. Mims said that he couldn't say for sure.
So where did LE find this gun?:waitasec:

Peterson calls move harassment
March 20, 2008Recommend
BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter/drozek@suntimes.com
Drew Peterson's parents don't know what happened to his missing fourth wife.
That's what his mother and stepfather, Betty and Al Morphey, told reporters on Thursday after they testified in front of the Will County grand jury investigating Stacy Peterson's Oct. 28 disappearance.
"I have no idea. Do you?" Al Morphey replied when asked by a reporter if the couple knew where Stacy was.
Neither would comment on what they were asked about during their grand jury appearance, though Betty Morphey said she believed Stacy still could return home safely.
The grand jury convened last fall just days after Stacy Peterson vanished from the couple's Bolingbrook home. It also has been reviewing the 2004 bathtub drowning of Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose death initially was labeled an accident but earlier this year was formally reclassified a murder.
Authorities have described 53-year-old Drew Peterson as a suspect in Stacy's disappearance, though the former Bolingbrook police officer has denied any involvement, contending that she may have run off with another man. Her family has vigorously disputed that theory.
Drew Peterson, who was one of the first witnesses called before the grand jury, also has insisted he didn't play any role in Savio's drowning death, which occurred after they had divorced.
Peterson said Thursday he's "pretty pissed off" his mother and stepfather were called before the grand jury, saying they have no information about Stacy Peterson's disappearance or Savio's death.
"It's simply harassment," he said. "They're old folks who don't have anything to do with anything."
Peterson's parents offered little other information to reporters.
"You guys are vultures," Al Morphey said as he and his wife walked away.

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Jobless and with no prospects, Drew Peterson spends his days taking care of his four children: cooking meals, washing clothes, helping with homework. All the while, he does so knowing that most of the world believes he killed his last two wives.
Nearly five months have passed since Stacy Peterson vanished from the couple's home in this Chicago suburb. Peterson is a suspect in her disappearance, and authorities are also trying to determine if he had any role in the 2004 death of his ex-wife.
The 54-year-old former police officer knows that he could be locked up anytime, and that is part of why he allowed The Associated Press into his home for an exclusive interview.
"I am now dealing with the court of public opinion, which is filled with my jury pool," explained Peterson, who conducted the interview last week with his attorney's blessing.
Peterson's image has taken a beating. He has repeatedly come off as boorish and callous, after making wisecracks about his wife's menstrual cycles and enthusiastically agreeing on a radio show to take part in a "Win a Date With Drew" contest.
Peterson acknowledges that his behavior might be seen as peculiar and his jokes inappropriate, although he blames the news media for portraying him as a "sinister character lurking around underneath rocks."
"Humor's kind of a defense mechanism for me, so I joke about everything," he said. "Even though I may be scared to death, I'm smiling and laughing."
Pamela Bosco, a friend of Stacy Peterson, said Drew Peterson changes his demeanor whenever it will help his case.
"They keep trying to change the look that fits," she said. "Drew is a chameleon."
For two hours at his home, Peterson was subdued. He's 30 pounds lighter than when his wife disappeared. There are bags under his eyes, and he appears pale. When he speaks, there are still some jokes, but he is careful.
Peterson's home life is centered on raising his children from the two marriages: two teenage boys, ages 13 and 15, plus a 3-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son.
Stacy, who was 23 when she vanished, is everywhere in photographs displayed throughout the family's house. Many of them are in frames with phrases like "Home Sweet Home" and "Live, Laugh, Love."
"I can't even bring myself to put her clothes away," Peterson said. "They're hung up like they were the day she left."
Much of the home remains as she decorated it, with silk flowers filling the living room and artificial vines hanging from lattice on the kitchen walls, an effort by Stacy to give the room an Italian feel.
Among the couple's knickknacks is a figurine of a police officer holding a little girl's hand. Peterson joked that it shows him and his wife in 1988, referring to their 30-year age difference.
"I thought we had a lot of fun together when we just did everyday things," he said.
Throughout the tour, Peterson complimented his wife. She was a great mother, he said, and a funny and caring wife.
"It's very lonely without her," he said. "She created a real nice environment, home environment, for the kids and I."
His theory of his wife's disappearance has never changed. He says she left him for another man and is still alive.
"I'm very angry," he said. He said he's hired private investigators to look for her, but he won't elaborate.
Peterson would not discuss details of the police investigation into his wife's disappearance, nor would he talk about the grand jury looking into both her disappearance and the death of his ex-wife, Kathleen Savio. The panel just this month heard testimony from his mother and stepfather.
He did talk about reports that he asked truckers to carry a mysterious package for him, but only to make the point that subsequent reports debunking the claim did not get much attention.
Peterson has heard people hurl obscenities at him, and he has received death threats. Since he retired shortly after his wife disappeared, he has not heard from a single member of the Bolingbrook Police Department, where he worked for 32 years. He said he cannot think of anyone there he calls a friend.
He's a celebrity now, he said, in the same way Scott Peterson was before his arrest in the death of his pregnant wife, Laci, and the way people still wonder about O.J. Simpson. Camera crews sometimes follow him when he's out in public.
"I'll walk into a restaurant and you'll hear this hum go through this restaurant, 'There's Drew Peterson. There's Drew Peterson,"' he said.
The displays of hostility don't happen as much when he's with his children. But, he said, the children have been confronted with the rumors and speculation swirling around their father, such as the time someone told his 13-year-old son that Peterson tossed his wife out of a helicopter.
One neighbor has taped "Where is Stacy?" posters in the windows that face Peterson's house. Another put an even larger one in the front yard.
"I want my kids to be kids and they can't," he said. "They drive by on their little tricycles and bicycles, and they see that."
The neighbor, Sharon Bychowski, said the signs "are in support of Stacy Peterson," not about her husband.
Whatever they are about, Peterson said he wants to move.
"I've got to get away from this environment and the kids (have) got to get away from this environment," he said. The problem is that the house is in his wife's name. To sell it, he needs his wife's signature or a court order.
So he stays, talking about possibly moving to a warmer climate and starting his own business. In the meantime, he's arranged for relatives to take care of the children if he is arrested.
"I'm sure when all this clears up," he said, "I'll get some apologies from some people."

Judges' rulings pave way for litigation, keep ex-cop's guns with state police
Drew Peterson's legal team suffered defeats on two fronts Thursday, when one judge named new executors to the estate of his third wife, permitting her relatives to file a wrongful-death lawsuit against him, and another judge declined to order the return of his 11 guns.
Will County Judge Carmen Goodman determined that the finding of the most recent autopsy showing Kathleen Savio had been murdered in 2004 was enough reason for her estate to be reopened. The judge replaced Peterson's uncle, James Carroll, as executor of the estate with Savio's father, Henry, and sister, Anna Doman.
John Kelly, a New York attorney representing the Savio family who was the lawyer for Nicole Brown Simpson's family in the successful civil suit against O.J. Simpson, said the wrongful-death case would be filed within a couple of weeks.
Joel Brodsky, representing Peterson and Carroll, said he planned to appeal Goodman's ruling. He argued in court that the Savios had two years under the statute of limitations to challenge the probate proceedings.
On Thursday, at Brodsky's request, Goodman appointed an attorney, to represent the couple's two children, now 13 and 15. Joliet attorney Chrystel Gavlin will act on behalf of the children's interests, Brodsky said.

Give me a break!!! Why didn't he offer a reward when she first disappeared? IMO he just wants to keep his mug in the media for another 15 seconds of fame. Just in case no one will remember who he is. I pray that Stacey's remains will be found one day and he will get his comeuppance, if not, there is a higher court that will bring justice for Stacey and Kathleen when DP meets his maker. I also pray and hope that KS's family win big time in the wrongful death suit. DP's brother is no longer executor of KS's will - her father and sister are (WTG Savio's). This guy makes me sick and I totally hate seeing his smug face in newspapers, on T.V. like he is some big shot saying "Look at me......I got away with 2 murders!" This creep has no soul nor compassion - that goes for his attorney and his whole family (his children excluded). This is all JMO
