Charles London Beck

Charles London Beck, 25, of 14505 Audubon Trace, Tampa, was last heard from at about 11 p.m. March 12 after he returned from Tallahassee on a business trip, his mother told authorities.

Beck's boss at Marlin Engineering called his mother, Genevieve, the next day and told her he did not come in to work. Charles Beck never missed a day of work and he would call if he was going to be late, employers told deputies.

Beck's car, a 2002 silver Mercedes C230K hatchback with Florida tag W102LC, also is missing. His cell phone appears to have been turned off. Detectives have searched his apartment and found no signs of forced entry, the sheriff's office said.

Beck is 5 feet 5 inches tall, about 160 pounds with brown eyes, black hair and a light complexion. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 873-8477.

She told investigators she spoke with Beck's employer, Maslin Engineering, who told her he did not show up for work last Thursday and did not call, which is very unusual for him.

Detectives have searched him apartment in the Tampa Palms area and found no signs of forced entry. His car is also missing and his cell phone appears to be turned off, investigators say.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.

TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office thinks that an engineer missing since March 12 is a victim of foul play.

Charles London Beck, 25, of 14505 Audubon Trace, was last heard from about 11 p.m. March 12 after he returned from Tallahassee on a business trip, his mother told authorities.

Beck's car, a 2002 silver Mercedes C230K hatchback with Florida tag W102LC, also is missing.

Sheriff's detectives searched his apartment and found evidence leading them to think he is a victim of foul play, a sheriff's office news release states.

Deputies spoke today with Michelle Martin, 20, an associate or friend of Beck's girlfriend. After the interview, she was arrested on unrelated warrant of violating probation, according to the release.

Detectives hope to speak with Nicole Sylvester, Beck's girlfriend. But they haven't been able to locate her.

She would sometimes stay at his apartment, and she doesn't have her own permanent address.

Anyone with any details on Beck or Sylvester is asked to call the sheriff's office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.

I hope they can get a picture of the girlfriend released.

The girlfriend's name is Nicole Sylvester, and on Charles's MYSPACE page there is a picture of a young woman named Nicole. I don't think it is to much of a leap to guess that the picture is more than likely the girlfriend. But, it is only a guess.

Two arrested in murder, kidnapping of Tampa man
Last Update: 8:18 pm

A missing Tampa man's murder suspects have been arrested with the help of the Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office.

Charles London Beck, 25, of Tampa has been missing since March 12th, 2008. He never showed up to work and family, co-workers said it was unlike him.

Thursday night, PBSO detectives located the missing Tampa engineer's 2002 Mercedes last night in Greenacres.

PBSO kept surveillance on the vehicle assisting the Highlands County Sheriffs department with the investigation.

The suspects, Nicole Sylvester and Byron Moorehead arrived in a rental vehicle to the pick up the victim's vehicle, when officials arrested them.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office detectives flew to Palm Beach last night and interviewed both suspects.

Nicole Sylvester, an apparent girlfriend of the engineer, admitted to all of the above charges and admitted Moorhead's involvement.

The above charges will be added today and they will be brought back to Hillsborough County.

As the investigation unfolded throughout the night, investigators developed information as to the location of the victim's body in Highlands County.

Detectives notified Highlands County Sheriff's Office which conducted a search and discovered Charles Beck in a shallow grave in a remote wooded area located off Highway 27 and County Road 29 in Highlands County.

The two suspects planned an armed robbery, kidnapping of Beck.

While both armed, Sylvester and Moorehead bound the victim with duct tape and placed him in the trunk of the victim's 2002 Mercedes.

The suspects then drove south on I-75 near the Ellington exit where they pulled to the side of the road.

The victim was able to escape from the trunk and was physically subdued by the both Sylvester and Moorehead.

Moorehead then shot the victim in the head causing his death.

The suspects then put the victim's body in the car and drove to Highlands County where they buried him in a shallow grave.

Both Nicole Sylvester and Bryon Moorehead are being held in Palm Beach County jail awaiting extradition back to Hillsborough County.

TAMPA - Days before police discovered the body of 25-year-old Charles Beck in a Highlands County field, his mother says she already knew he was dead.

"I just had a bad feeling, as a mother I can feel, I can feel, so when he didn't call in and just disappeared, I can feel right off," said Genevieve Beck.

Genevieve Beck hadn't heard from her son in a couple of days, and neither had his employer.

The civil engineer had been on a business trip to Tallahassee for most of the week, but never returned to the office.

"He was a hard worker, very industrious, accurate, never missed a day, didn't call in sick," said Michael Register, Beck's colleague.

By Friday, police were looking for 20-year-old Nicole Sylvester, who Beck met a month and a half earlier, and may have taken in.

Genevieve Beck says her son was too trusting and caring, and she says, she warned him about Sylvester.

"I'm not judging people, but it was a totally different environment when my son was with her," Beck said.

Sylvester disappeared on the same day as Beck, but on Friday, Palm Beach County deputies found her with Beck's 2002 Mercedes, in an apartment complex parking lot. She was with a friend of hers, 20-year-old Byron Moorehead.

Investigators say Sylvester admitted the two lured Beck to Moorehead's apartment, then robbed him at gunpoint and bound him with duct tape. They allegedly locked Beck in the trunk of his car, and took off down I-75.

At some point, Beck managed to escape the trunk, and that's when police say Moorehead shot him in the head. Police say they buried him in a shallow grave in a remote, wooded area -- and fled.

"The only thing that makes me feel good, they knew, they were scared and they were running for their life. And that's how he felt when he was running for his life. So they felt it, they felt it," Genevieve Beck said.

Nicole Sylvester and Byron Moorehead have been charged with first degree murder, armed robbery and armed kidnapping.

The medical examiner's office will be perform an autopsy to make a positive identification of Charles Beck, and determine the cause of death.

Girlfriend charged in missing engineer's death

The body of a man believed to be missing engineer Charles London Beck was found in a shallow grave and two people, including his girlfriend, face charges of first-degree murder, robbery and kidnapping, the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office reports.

Beck, 25, who vanished last week, was apparently shot in the head after he escaped, duct-taped, from the trunk of his car, authorities said.

The suspects are Nicole Sylvester, 20, of 3404 N. 55 Street, Apt. D, in Tampa, and Byron Moorehead, bottom left, 20, of 2602 Cabin Court, Apt. 103, Lutz.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office found Beck's missing 2002 silver Mecedes in an apartment complex parking lot in Green Acres. They watched the car until Sylvester and Moorehead arrived to pick it up, the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office said.

Sylvester admitted to all of the charges and implicated Moorehead, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Deputies say Sylvester called Beck to come to Moorehead's apartment, 7808 River Resort Lane, Apt. C, between March 12 and March 13, with a plan that when Beck arrived, they would rob him.

When Beck got there, the two suspects held Beck at gunpoint and demanded he get on the floor while Sylvester removed the engineer's wallet, according to Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

Sylvester and Moorehead then bound Beck with duct tape and put him in the trunk of his own 2002 Mercedes, deputies say. They then drove Beck south on Interstate 75 near the Ellenton exit, where they pulled to the side of the road.

Deputies say that's when Beck tried to escape. But the pair subdued the victim, deputies say, and Moorehead shot him in the head. Sylvester and Moorehead then drove Beck to Highlands County, where deputies say he was buried in a shallow grave.

Beck, a University of South Florida graduate, worked for a year at Marlin Engineering in Tampa. Carter on Thursday described Sylvester as Beck's girlfriend.

Beck last spoke with his mother on Wednesday night after returning from a business training trip to Tallahassee, according to police. He did not report to work the next day as expected and was first reported missing on Tuesday.

Sylvester and Moorehead are charged with first degree murder, armed robbery and armed kidnapping. They are being charged in Palm Beach County and will eventually be transported back to Tampa, Carter said.

Missing engineer found dead in shallow grave

Rebecca Catalanello, Times staff writer
In Print: Saturday, March 22, 2008

TAMPA — Charles London Beck, a meticulous civil engineer who brought his mother flowers the last time he saw her, was found dead Friday in a shallow grave in Highlands County.

Detectives are still investigating how this 25-year-old Tampa professional's life ended more than 100 miles from home, a fatal bullet wound in his head.

They say two people are responsible: his girlfriend, Nicole Sylvester, 20, of Tampa, and someone neighbors describe as Sylvester's friend, Byron Moorehead, 20. Both were arrested in Palm Beach on Thursday night.

Beck and his silver 2002 Mercedes disappeared a week earlier, after he didn't show up to work on March 13. Palm Beach deputies found Beck's car in an apartment complex Thursday.

As law enforcement kept an eye on the vehicle, Sylvester and Moorehead arrived in a rented car to pick it up and were taken into custody.

According to Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter, here's what happened:

Sylvester phoned Beck sometime on March 12 or March 13 to meet her at Moorehead's place, 7808 River Resort Lane, Apt. C — off of N 56th Street near E Sligh Avenue.

Beck arrived at the second-floor apartment, and Moorehead and Sylvester held him at gunpoint, took his wallet, bound him with duct tape and stuck him in the trunk of his prized Mercedes.

They drove south on Interstate 75, stopping near the Ellenton exit near Bradenton, and pulled to the side of the road.

Beck managed to escape thanks to an emergency release inside the trunk, Carter said. But Sylvester and Moorehead caught and subdued him.

That's when detectives think Moorehead shot Beck, loaded his body into the Mercedes and drove with Sylvester to Highlands County, where they buried him at U.S. 27 and County Road 29.

Genny Beck, 46, reported her son missing earlier this week after his employer at Marlin Engineering called and said he hadn't shown up to work on March 13 as expected.

Beck said she prayed for days and, unable to sleep, did her own detective work at his home. Her punctual son always called and went to work faithfully, she said.

When detectives told her about 1 p.m. Friday that they had found her boy, she was both devastated and relieved.

Charles Beck made his mother proud. Growing up, he did housework and helped the single mother manage her two youngest children. He earned his engineering degree from the University of South Florida in less than three years.

When he introduced Sylvester as his girlfriend, Genny Beck said she had a bad feeling. But she didn't want to meddle.

Beck and Sylvester dated off and on for about three months, said Carter.

But neighbors at Sylvester's residence, 3404 N 55th St., laughed when told she was dating a man. They said Sylvester, whom they call "Stud," has had a relationship with exotic dancer Michelle Martin, 20, for years.

"She got one girlfriend," said Timonique Kelly, 18. "Michelle's her girlfriend, and they love each other."

Employees at Fantasy Dolls on N 56th Street said Martin, who they call "L'il Bit," has danced there occasionally for about a year. She often came in with Sylvester and Beck, said Chantae Jones, 25, and a dancer who gave only her stage name, "Cinnamon."

Jones said Sylvester appeared to become jealous when Martin began making money at the club. And she said she once saw Sylvester dump out Martin's bag in the middle of an argument.

Kelly, the neighbor, said she wasn't aware if Sylvester had a job. "If Michelle got money," she said, "Nicole got money."

Martin, who also lists Sylvester's 55th Street apartment as her address, was arrested Tuesday on violation of probation after being questioned her about Beck's disappearance. She remained at Orient Road Jail on Friday night.

Sylvester has confessed to the crimes, Carter said. She and Moorehead are charged with first-degree murder, armed kidnapping and armed robbery. They are eventually expected to be brought back to Hillsborough County from Palm Beach, where they were being held.

State records indicate neither has an extensive arrest record.

The Tampa apartment where detectives say Sylvester and Moorehead first robbed Beck appeared to be vacant Friday evening.

Authorities list a Lutz address for Moorehead. His neighbor, Tina Farr, 50, said he had been living at the Tampa address about three months and had always been quiet.

Farr said she last saw Sylvester on Tuesday. The 20-year-old was sitting outside with a downtrodden look on her face.

"You all right?" Farr remembers asking. "You look like you're in trouble."

Sylvester said she was fine.
