Toddler 'abducted' during holiday
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42884000/jpg/_42884963_maddy203.jpg Madeleine disappeared while her parents were at a nearby restaurant
Sniffer dogs have been brought in to help search for a three-year-old from Britain who may have been abducted on holiday with her family in Portugal. Madeleine McCann's parents, from Leicestershire, were at a restaurant near the Mark Warner Ocean Summer Club in Praia da Luz when she went missing.
Kate and Gerry McCann returned at about 2145 GMT to find an empty bed and the apartment door and window wide open.
The apartment has been cordoned off and local people are helping with a search.
'Devoted family'
Gill Renwick, a friend of the family, said Madeleine's parents - both doctors - had been having a meal in a tapas restaurant a few hundred yards from the apartment and had been checking on the little girl and her younger brother and sister (two-year-old twins) every half hour.
"They're a devoted family and love their children to bits. They live for their children."
Madeleine was reported missing at about 2200 BST on Thursday and tourists joined the police in an all-night search.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42884000/jpg/_42884965_maddyfamily203l.jpg The McCann family had been holidaying with a larger group
Her aunt Trish Cameron, who lives in Glasgow, said she felt certain her niece had been abducted.
"They last checked at half past nine and they were all sound asleep, sleeping, windows shut, shutters shut.
"Kate went back at 10 o'clock to check. The front door was lying open, the window had been tampered with, the shutters had been jemmied open or whatever you call it and Madeleine was missing...
"She's an absolutely beautiful, wee blonde girl, blue-green eyes - one distinguishing feature is that one of her pupils runs into the iris of her right eyes. She's an absolutely gorgeous wee girl."
She added: "We feel that what's been going on in Portugal has been ineffectual.
"My brother and sister-in-law are absolutely distraught."
But the manager of the Mark Warner resort in Portugal, John Hill, said about 60 staff and guests at the complex had searched until 0430 GMT while police notified border police, Spanish police and airports.
Officers sealed off the area of the apartment for forensic checks and extra police teams were brought in from Lisbon.
'Sensitive case'
"As you can imagine Madeleine's parents are distraught and not doing very well at all," Mr Hill said.
"It's still questionable as to whether it's abduction," he said.
"We are hoping that Madeleine is found as soon as possible and safe and well."
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42883000/gif/_42883623_portu_south_praia203.gif
The holiday firm has offered to fly other family members out to the resort.
A spokeswoman from the Portuguese police said they were being careful with the information being released.
"It is a sensitive case, it involves a child and we cannot give more information for now."
The British Embassy confirmed it had been informed about the toddler's disappearance.
The family was on holiday with a group of nine adults and eight children.
The toddler's father is a consultant cardiologist at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital.
Doug Skehan, another consultant cardiologist there, said: "(Dr McGann) is a popular hard working colleague, for whom we have great affection.
"The mood in the hospital is one of great concern and we hope that Kate and Gerry will have their daughter back very soon."

Private Detective Says He Knows Location of Madeleine McCann
Thursday, December 13, 2007
private investigator hired by Kate and Gerry McCann believes their missing daughter Madeleine was kidnapped by a pedophile ring in the Iberian Peninsula or northern Africa, and that she will be returned by Christmas, the Daily Mail reported.
Click here to view the full report from The Daily Mail.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=501671&in_page_id=1770&ct=5
"I cannot say who she is with because we are putting together conclusive proof we can present to the authorities so they can proceed with their arrests," Francisco Marco is quoted telling the Spanish newspaper Metro.
Marco promised last month that he would find Madeleine, 4, who disappeared May 3 from a vacation apartment in Portugal.
Marco heads up the Barcelona-based Metodo 3, which has been working for the McCanns since September, the Daily Mail reported. Metodo 3 has been criticized by Portuguese police as "small fry" and "irrelevant," the newspaper reported.
"I have always said publicly Madeleine is alive," Marco reportedly told Metro. "I have to believe it 100 percent because I know how to look for living people, not dead ones. But I have no proof Madeleine is alive.
"We have proof of her movements after her kidnap and we know she was alive the day after her disappearance. We are not certain she left Portugal.
"I talk of certainties because we know which group may have her or could have kidnapped her to then sell her on to others," Marco said.

Alipio Ribeiro
Alipio Ribeiro is head of the Policia Judiciaria in Portugal.
On 21/10/07 he was interviewed by El Pais:
Asked about the leaks from the Portugese police:
"There has been, without doubt, but less than it would appear. The imagination of journalists has also worked hard. What is certain is that the police must have serenity to separate history, fantasy, as police. We can not get carried away with emotion, we must keep open all scenarios and walk step by step."
He confirms that the paedophile abduction theory came from the McCanns.

British paedophile 'with links to Portugal' suspected of abducting Madeleine
Last updated at 17:07pm on 23.12.07
A British paedophile with links to Portugal has been revealed as a potential suspect in the Madeleine McCann investigation.
Detectives want to question the man in connection with the girl's disappearance almost eight months ago, when he is believed to have been in the Algarve.
His identity has been known to police since May, when his name was on a list given to Portuguese police by their British counterparts, but officers are understood to have failed to trace him.

Madeleine: Police name Gerry and Kate McCann as PRIME suspects
Last updated at 15:21pm on 3rd January 2008
• Portugese police report is handed over to prosecutors
• Blow to Gerry and Kate McCann's hopes of being cleared
Gerry and Kate McCann's hope of being cleared over their daughter's disappearance appeared crushed today after they were reportedly named as prime suspects in a new police dossier.
There had been hopes that the couple's status as official suspects could be lifted in coming days. But they may now remain under suspicion for years, after Portuguese detectives submitted an interim report to prosecutors.
Police are keeping to their theory that the McCanns could have accidentally killed three-year-old Madeleine and then disposed of her body.
Under new Portuguese laws - still largely untested - there had been a suggestion that files on the case could be made public today on the eight month anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. The deadline prompted hopes the official suspects - or arguido - status could then be removed.
But according to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, the Policia Judiciaria will hand over an interim report in which the McCanns remain at the centre of inquiries.
The dossier will also include the possibility Madeleine was abducted from the holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on 3 May - adding to confusion in the case and reinforcing the view that Portuguese police have no real idea what actually happened to the girl.
The insistence on naming the parents comes despite growing concern that forensic evidence from their apartment and hire car is flawed. Portuguese police sources had suggested the evidence was far from conclusive. The McCanns, both 39, maintain their innocence.
The only other official suspect, Robert Murat, had also hoped he would be cleared in the next few days, but this hope appeared to be dashed by the report's contention that Madeleine might have been abducted.
Correio da Manha added that the police report would contain a request to reinterview the McCanns and their friends - known as the Tapas Nine - in Britain in coming weeks. After those interviews the McCanns' lawyers are expected to apply for arguido status to be removed.
The dossier has been dismissed by the McCanns' advisers as "pure speculation".
Edward Smethurst, the lawyer conducting the McCanns' defence, said: "We have received no information to suggest that the court file is going to be opened today and indeed we believe it's likely that it will be some time before the court file is made available."
Referring to media coverage of the police dossier, he added: "Any report about the leaked document we believe is completely without substance. We think it arises out of pure speculation on the part of the Portuguese press."
The McCanns' spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said: "If this interim police report exists it appears to say nothing new. It apparently maintains the position that Kate and Gerry remain arguidos. I also note that it says the exact same thing about Mr Murat.
"More importantly it says that abduction is a possibility as well, as we have maintained all along.
"All we will say is that this appears to be nothing new and the police appear to be restating their current position.
"We hope that once the police realise there is no case against Kate and Gerry that they will lift their arguido status."
Mr Murat's lawyer, Francisco Pagarete, said he had not received notification today of the court file's publication.
He said: "I have had no letter from the public prosecutor. I don't know if they are going to ask for a postponement of the secrecy law or not.
"When the prosecutor arrives at a decision, he writes it down and sends me a letter telling me of the decision. The postman has been and left me no letter."
The McCanns have been told by their lawyers they may have to go to the European Court of Human Rights to have their arguido status lifted.
The prospect of the case dragging on for years was reinforced today by the president of the National Union of Portuguese Judges.
Antonio Martins said: "The problem is that no-one knows what type of crime was committed. If it was homicide the investigation can only be shelved after 20 years, if it was kidnap 15 years."
It emerged today the McCanns have hired a detective who investigated a 7/7suicide bomber. Noel Hogan is conductinga "cold case" review.
The former Met detective superintendent, who runs the agency Hogan International, in Farnham said: "I have been reinterviewing witnesses that were out in Portugal at the time."
It is understood these include friends of the McCanns.
Hogan International was investigating Jermaine Lindsay in the run-up to the 7 July attacks in London in 2005 after a bank became alarmed by his spending patterns.

The Farce
*great blog with good insight into case* Although it is a blog there are several daily links to the days breaking news or leaks or whatever we shall call it.
I collected a lot of links and photos too on my drive and eventually put it all on a blog at
www.madelmccann.blogspot.com (http://www.madelmccann.blogspot.com)
It's there for research only, no comments it is to document the news of the case and it is NOT pro McCann. I believe that the mother harmed this child on May 3 and that they as a couple orchestrated this whole "fund" and story about an abduction.
Remember, these parents are not investigators, they do not have the final say in anything regarding this case; it's an investigation; so anything they say needs to be put in it's proper place....Even Melanie McGuires parents stand by her.......get my drift?
There are several charges of hindering the investigation by the PJ Police in PDL. They feel that the parents constant media scourge has hindered their investigation.....by constantly drumming up false leads, false pictures and sketches, etc. They are muddying the investigation into their own childs death. PDL PJ LE working theory since wk 3 is that KM harmed her child that night; and that she is dead. So this is nothing new that i'm stating here. ALl the links to any of these "facts" are on my blog. And the "other place". It's been my firm position that this is a case of child abandonment and abuse. Nothing more nothing less, except it ended in Madeleines death. 3 yr old children are not EVER LEFT ALONE. NOT EVER.
And, if you are the kind of parent that leaves twins 18mos old and a 3 yr old ALONE all ALONE in an unfamiliar FLAT on Holiday; then that says an AWFUL LOT about who you are; as a person AND as a "parent"....it says alot to the whole world; a world that is watching and waiting for justice for little Madel.

Madeleine McCann search switches to Australia
August 06, 2009 08:20am
BREAKING NEWS: THE hunt for missing British toddler Madeleine McCann has switched to Australia after fresh information on a new suspect.
A witness has given Kate and Gerry McCann's private detectives fresh information about an Australian man they believe could be linked to Madeleine's disappearance, The Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1204605/Now-Madeleine-hunt-moves-Down-Under.html) reports.
But The Sun says an Australian woman is believed to hold vital clues to Madeleine's abduction.
It reports detectives have been told an Australian woman spoke to a Brit outside a bar in Barcelona, Spain, three days after the young girl went missing. The witness only came forward in recent weeks.
A source close to the investigation said: "What this Australian is reported to have said is of enough significant interest to launch a hunt for her."
The investigators believe the man is of 'potential significance' to their hunt and will today make a dramatic public appeal for help to find him.
They are expected to release images of the man and information about his possible link to the two-year search for Madeleine.
Dave Edgar, one of two retired detectives hired by the McCanns to co-ordinate the hunt, is to due make the appeal at a press conference in London.
McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: 'We want the public's help to identify someone. We are making an appeal based on new information.' He refused to give further details.
Madeleine vanished from her family's rented holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, while her parents dined with friends at a nearby restaurant.
She has not been seen since, despite a series of appeals from her parents, who have vowed never to give up the search

Personally i think they should restart this case at the very beginning..maybe the FBI investigating and making all the parties involved actually cooperate and hopefully come up with consistent timeline of what happened and where everyone was at the time Madeleine "vanished" - and dig into more about Martin Smiths sighting which funnily enough is getting ignored.
Someone should also go over all the statements because theres so many inconsistencies its crazy.

Police say a Sydney woman has come forward with information that could help in the search for the missing British toddler, Madeleine McCann.
The three-year-old disappeared two years ago during a family holiday in Portugal.
The family's private investigators are looking for a woman they believe may be Australian, who they say could have significant information about the disappearance.
New South Wales Police say a Sydney woman came forward yesterday claiming to know the person the family is looking for.
"Detectives have received information about a woman, who is similar in description of the woman being sought by private investigators examining the disappearance of British child, Madeleine McCann," police said in a statement.
"Yesterday afternoon, a Sydney woman provided a formal statement to detectives at a Sydney police station.
"The NSW Police Force will forward the information received to the Australian Federal Police for follow-up."
The McCanns' investigators revealed on Thursday a witness had come forward saying he spoke to a woman with an Australian or New Zealand accent outside a bar in Barcelona, three days after Madeleine McCann's disappearance.
The British holiday-maker reportedly said she asked him, "Are you here to deliver my new daughter?"
The woman is described as 158 centimetres tall, glamorous and well-dressed, with short dark hair.
