Thomas Beatie
From The Advocate March 25, 2008
To our neighbors, my wife, Nancy, and I don’t appear in the least unusual. To those in the quiet Oregon community where we live, we are viewed just as we are -- a happy couple deeply in love. Our desire to work hard, buy our first home, and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary. That is, until we decided that I would carry our child.

I heard this on the news this morning. He isn't able to talk to local reporters until next week, but I'm not sure why.
"Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire."
I agree with this statement that Thomas said in the article, but I do worry about the safety of them all. I know this child will be loved and cared for, for all their lives. I also wonder about long term health for both him and the baby.
But at least this child is wanted and will be loved. And really, that is all that matters.

I do not care what anyone thinks--this is disgusting.

I just don't care. Cosmetically, we can all be either - just what clothes you wear. Biologically, one gender is designed for one role, the other for another - but that doesn't make either of us superior, inferior, or whatever. I don't really see the story here. To me, it seems like a lesbian marriage (and a legal one - yay!), having a child. Just because the more butch one is the one carrying, and has undergone treatment to appear more male, I don't see the big deal.

Considering the birth canal, how small is this kid going to be?

Great Post! True this is an unusal story, but underneath it is just about 2 people in love having a baby.

Well he has female reproductive organs, so I assume the birth canal will be adequate.

This one is just the media blowing it all out of proportion for shock value, I think.
He was born a woman, had surgery to become a man, but kept his/her uterus and can have a baby. Just guessing here, but I see a C-section for the birth.

Yes, I agree, a C-section seems logical. Didn't think of that.

I agree. Gay couples have children all the time through one means or the other. What difference does it make? :faintTHUD:Shock value is right!
