New Trial Begins For Accused EMU Killer

POSTED: 6:07 pm EDT March 31, 2008
UPDATED: 6:21 pm EDT March 31, 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A jury is set and opening statements under way in the second trial of a former Easter Michigan Univesity student accused of killing a fellow student.

Orange Taylor's first trial ended in a mistrial last October when the jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision.

Taylor, 21, is now being re-tried for the December 2006 rape and murder of Laura Dickinson, 22.

A jury of eight women and six men was selected Monday, and testimony was scheduled to begin Tuesday.

The U.S. Education Department fined Eastern Michigan $357,500 for covering up the death. The case led to the removal of university President John Fallon and others.

The trial is taking place before Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Archie Brown.

I hope when the time comes for instructions, the instructions about getting rid of a juror who refuses to deliberate will be emphasized. A juror coming to a different conclusion is fine, but the rogue juror, stealth juror, we need to work on getting those out of the deliberations process.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A prosecutor told jurors in the retrial of a man accused of raping and strangling a fellow Eastern Michigan University student that the death was every woman's worst nightmare.

"This is not a case about every woman's nightmare," Assistant Public Defender Laura Graham said in her opening statement. "This is a case about every citizen's nightmare -- being accused of a terrible crime that you didn't commit."

Morning everyone.:mornincoffee:
Happy April Fool's Day! (Not in the mood to pull off a prank today! I'll leave that to someone else! Anyway, I'm not very good at it!)

I wish I could be here today. After a bad day at work yesterday(everything that could go wrong, did!), I could use a day off! (Eventhough, I had all last week off!) I hope the OT trial starts today, so when I get home I have something good to read!

Someone who lives near Detriot could maybe answer this...

What are the communities sentiments about OT? Is it a Black/White issue?

My gut feeling is that he's worried about 'community reaction.'
That televising the court proceedings would cause tempers to flare, riots to happen, all hell to break loose. And so forth.

He's wrong about this.

If he isn't going to allow it to be videoed without live outside feed, then we'll have to depend on others summations of what happened. I never like that. I want to make up my own mind about what is said and how a witness acted on the stand.

That's what it seems like to me. I'm disappointed and disgusted.

Not to mention the rogue loonies getting onto and then hanging juries. Something is wrong with the system and it's getting worse all the time.

COOL!! She can give us some prespective on the jurors, and maybe, just maybe can get info about the live stream denial.

:innocent0001:

yes, she asked us what we wanted her to focus on, and I said I really was interested in the jury: the makeup, the ages, genders, but especially how they were responding to the attorneys etc. So hopefully she'll get through the bad weather and get to attend at least some of the trial.

Taylor trial testimony moving quickly (http://blog.mlive.com/annarbornews/2008/04/taylor_trial_testimony_moving.html)

Categories: EMU Trial (http://blog.mlive.com/annarbornews/breaking_news/emu_trial/)

Attorneys briskly questioned eight witnesses, including the first person to discover Laura Dickinson's body, as the second day of trial for Orange Taylor III continued this morning in Washtenaw County Circuit Court.
Perhaps benefited from the experience of the previous trial - which ended with a dedlocked jury last fall - Assistant Prosecutor Blaine Longsworth quickly moved through his list of roughly 50 witnesses.
This morning, eight witnesses discussed their roles in finding the body and securing Dickinson's Hill Hall dorm room on the Eastern Michigan University campus.
Custodian Michelle Lockwood testified that she responded to numerous complaints of a foul odor in the hall shortly after 1 p.m. Dec. 15, 2006. She unlocked Dickinson's room after knocking without a response.
Lockwood said she took two steps in, saw Dickinson's body and locked the door before calling her supervisor.
After police officers observed Dickinson's partially-clad body, EMU Police Lt. Jeff Nesmith said immediately called the Michigan State Police for assistance.
"I wanted the lab to process the scene because I wasn't sure what we had. I wanted to make the best effort," Nesmith said.
Nesmith said he slightly raised the pillow covering Dickinson's face slightly to check for obvious wounds and found none.
Testimony will continue throughout the day with investigators, crime scene technicians and lab analysts.
Taylor, also a former EMU student, is charged with open murder and other felonies in the slaying. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Well I guess we're in for more BEACH PATROL! and fewer live trials, then.

Prime Time is where they apparently are putting all their eggs. So be it.

Okay!
It seems my past years and years of owning a manufacturing company is finally doing me some good.

Part of owning that company or any company is advertising. So, every now and again, it was necessary to promote our company by "advertising" something that would be forthcoming. Like new capabilities, new machinery that would speed up production to warp speed, way better than our competitors etc.
And how we did this was with a "news release." I wrote the news release, but the point was to make it sound like it was written by some outside person and this was that person's glowing review of our company. But it wasn't. It was me, writing about my own company--and I made sure the release sounded good. That was the point.

When I read that account that Katy posted a link to, it was just so complimentary and OH Wow! about TruTV, that I wondered if this wasn't one of those "press releases," like I used to write. A "news" release, written by TruTV about itself, all glowing and successful sounding.

And it turned out that's just what it is.
It's a press release written by an outfit called PR Newswire. They write these "news releases" for their clients, one of whom is TruTV.
http://toolkit.prnewswire.com/score/

TruTv sends for their "toolkit" and then signs up with PR Newswire, and PR Newswire writes "news" and releases it for TruTV--in this case, it seems TruTV wants everyone to know they had a sensational "year" (? huh? They haven't been on the air for a year yet) and to tell everyone who's interested that they are continuing with their reality/actuality theme, and here are a few shows "in the works" or not (some seem to be ideas with only working titles).

So anyway, that article in PR Newswire is nothing. It's not even news, it's just promotional junk written by some lowly clerk cranking out puff pieces at PR Newswire following the script put forth by the client.

So, it's not reality. It's not actuality. It's not even true, nor is it news.

All it is, is an advertisement for that station that was once Court TV.

Well, well, well~~~ here is the message I got from the county court house regarding live streaming. Interesting, no?

"Good afternoon Ms. Clark and thank you for inquiring about the Orange Taylor trial in our court. In our court, we only allow 1 TV camera into any court proceeding and they are responsible to provide a feed to any other TV networks also requesting permission to cover a given trial. We call this “pooling” and the pool provider is selected on a first- come-first serve basis. During Mr. Taylor’s first trial, the national TV media show called Court TV submitted the appropriate paperwork first and was selected as the “pool” camera for the trial. This meant that they were responsible for providing a feed for all of the other networks covering that trial. This is common and it worked very well in the first Orange Taylor trial. For this second trial we have not had any TV network request the ability to live feed the trial and thus it is unavailable. The Court itself is not obligated to provide TV coverage of any trial. Since the TV media has decided not to cover this trial, it will not be available. The most up-to-date coverage being provided by the media for this second trial is a reporter from the Ann Arbor News who is “blogging” from the courtroom. TTV can stick it. I was rather surprised that Beth K. and crew were sent to the Gaillard trial; when it was only going to last 3-4 days. Usually, they cover longer trials. I'm wondering if their is a budget issue with CNN and they can't afford to send Beth or Jean for longer trials. Wouldn't surprise me.

Oh; and forgot to add....I had to report for jury duty this morning. I was so mad; I didn't even get an interview with the judge or the lawyers.
:1187603408.CR.Mothe

There were about 50 of us there; and they randomly selected 14 to be interviewed; 8 became jurors and 6 were dismissed. Then they selected 6 more; and they became jurors. Jury selection was over within an hour :lex_10:

Plus, it was a criminal trial. Armed Robbery and Assault. I wanted so bad to sit on this jury.

"We were equally surprised by the lack of TV interest. Speculation is that the controversy with the Mayor of the City of Detroit is keeping our TV stations very busy. I also understand that Court TV may have restructured and they may not be providing the same level of live court TV coverage as in years past. Simply as an FYI, the first jury was “hung” by one juror, not two."

:attention: :attention: :attention:

His name is Art Eisner and you can find his blog on MLive.com

Just over at the other message board. A new post has been posted by the poster who was communicating with clickondetroit. This poster did as I did and sent an email to the court administrator. The poster posted his answer on that board, if anybody wants to peek over there>>>>>>>>>>>>.

Sounds like clickondetroit.com is the culprit.

I peeked!!

There has got to be someone who would want to carry live trials. I mean; we are in the dish network and cable network with tons of channels. And, 3/4 of them are even worth watching. I include TTV in that also.

We just need to do some research and figure out who to contact and then we can start sending letters.

After all, this is our livelyhood:girl_haha:

Hey Love I am not boycotting the boards here I am boycotting their station I won't turn it on anymore won't bother me at all they got rid of most of the TH's that I like except Beth K.they may say they are doing well at night but nobody I know watches it.:71541:

I knew what you meant.:) I was just thinkin' we should do it as a big old group!!

I guess we had to know live trials would be reduced; because they fired Michael Bryant at the very beginning. :z0tdntknw:

Yep. It could also be in part due to their short broadcast schedule. They can hardly keep up with a trial with the few short hours they are actually on air.

I still miss MB.:girl_sad:

I turned on TTV Sunday afternoon; just to see what they were showing. It was beach patrol or something like that. And I swear; all they were showing were close-ups of the girls' butts in their bikinis. Sickening!!!

They've sunk to a new low!~

Maybe we should put TruTV on :nonono:

:1187603408.CR.Mothe

There were about 50 of us there; and they randomly selected 14 to be interviewed; 8 became jurors and 6 were dismissed. Then they selected 6 more; and they became jurors. Jury selection was over within an hour :lex_10:

Plus, it was a criminal trial. Armed Robbery and Assault. I wanted so bad to sit on this jury.

So, I'm all done for the week. What a bust!!!!:1187603408.CR.Mothe

Orange Taylor III trial moving along quickly

The witnesses are flying off the witness stand according to the Ann Arbor News. The trial is expected to last at least through this week. Once again this morning the defense attorney, Laura Graham, put forth the idea that Laura Dickinson died of natural causes before Taylor let himself into her room and masturbated on her (look it's not pretty language but it's the truth) and took some of her things.

One question we'd LOVE for Ms. Graham to answer us here at YCD or in open court:

How many people place a pillow over their faces before dying of natural causes from some kind of heart arrhythmia? Yes, if you could hip us to that, that would be grand....

Wow. That's such an untenable argument for the defense to make. I can't imagine any jury will give that line of argument much credence.

Well they DID have a jury nullifier last time. I suppose it COULD happen again. They could have had Taylor ON video killing her and this juror from the first trial would have heard none of it.
