A five month old baby was left alone in a running car Monday night in New Orleans. Minutes later, the car and the baby were both towed away.
Police say it happened in the French Quarter as a 20-year-old man was picking up his girlfriend from work at a convenience store. When he didn't see her waiting on the corner, he went inside looking for her.
While he was gone, his car was towed.
Witness Mike Pomfret said, "I remember seeing the car getting towed, then the man came back and was looking for it."
The problem was the man's 5-month old baby was left in the car with the engine running. The car and child ended up at a local tow lot. That's where family members were reunited with the infant.
The baby's father was taken to police headquarters for questioning.
Police believe the baby was overlooked because the baby seat was turned backwards in the back seat and hard to see with tinted windows.
Meantime, witnesses can't figure out why the baby was left alone in the first place.
"That's disgusting, people like that shouldn't have babies," said Pomfret.
Police say the father has no criminal history and has never been arrested. The New Orleans Police Department decided not to charge him. Instead, they turned the case over to the Office of Community Service.
