We took my Dad out boating/fishing tonight. When we got back to the Marina, he slipped and fell walking up the floating boat dock ramp. I knew it was bad when he couldn't stand up and Mr.Gator and I had to hold him up and walk baby steps to the truck.
He broke his hip socket and has 2 stitches in his knee. He was transported to Tampa for the necessary type of orthepedic surgeoun.
I knew I should have driven with because there is no way I can sleep right now. But he insisted. My Mom is in a nursing home and she expects to see him in the morning. Plus, he has a list of personal stuff he needs me to take care of and doesn't think surgery will take place that early because thats what the local Dr. said.
I feel so bad that this happened. I'm calling the hospital at 6:30 am to see if a surgery time has been set and if his list of things has to wait, so be it. {Nothing THAT important} Because I'm going to be there.

I'm sorry this has happened and I offer my prayers and positive thoughts.
I lost my dad in 2003, my sister in 2000, and my mom had colon cancer this year. (she's ok now)
I give you major hugs and will keep you and yours in my thoughts.

Thank you, Tam. And sorry to hear about all the pain you've experienced in recent years.
I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about the surgery and recovery. Fueling it is my Husbands Nan who had elective hip replacement surgery a few years ago at the age of 92. She pulled through remarkably well.

Thanks for all your support, guys.
He's still in an ER room [why did I think surgery may be early? lol} My Brother took a personal day and is closer than I am. He will wait a bit for traffic to die down and then go be with Dad. That'll give me time to do the errands for him before heaing out myself.

UPDATE
After different Dr.'s looked at Dad's x-rays, it's their opinion that he have full hip replacement. The hip socket is not only crushed but the cartilage around it is in bad shape. If they just fix the socket, there would be no cushioning and down the road, he would be in pain and need hip replacement anyway.
Because of his age and being a smoker, they want a Cardiologist to give his heart a clean bill of health and also want to make sure his lungs can handle the surgery.
They're now hoping for surgery on Friday. And say that its best to wait at least 48 hours after the injury because if they open the area up now, it would be full of blood.
Dad's holding up as well as can be expected. With all that is going on right now, he's most concerned about not being here for Mom's B-Day on Sunday. :(
I'm tired and going to bed now. Back to the hospital tommorrow. My Brother and I will do shifts and hope to get a definate time on surgery, if its going to happen.
Thanks for all your support.

Dear Jesus, we turn to You in this time of illness. Comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with Your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our sick under Your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servant Mr. Gator Dad to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen.

I know this is not my fault. Really, I do. It was an accident. Just hurts that well meaning intentions ended like this. Both my Brother and I have been trying to get Dad outta the house more often. Easier for me since I'm closer. His life revolves around Mom and the nursing home. He doesn't do anything else. And all she does is rant and moan about him.
For 3 days in a row, Dad hung with Gator and I. Dinner and a movie one night. ARF flying and boating another, and then, the fishing trip. {I did skunk both men and catch the only shark, lol}
Guess it was good that it happened with me. He could have slipped and fell at home all alone.
I'm trying to keep Dad optimistic. He's thinking of worse case scenerio after the Dr. said 6-12 months recovery. I remind him of how well Nan recovered at the age of 92 and how she elected to have the surgery.
Hejust bought a new truck about 2 months ago and its a stick shift. I know that he won't be able to drive ANYTHING for probably 2 months, but he may need another vehicle cause I don't if he'll ever be able to drive the stick again. And he just loves his new truckie.:(

MsGator I don't know if it will work the same but I had a stick shift when I burned my knee right down to the kneecap with a high pressure washer. They said I would need physical therapy to regain my mobility. The shifting was an accidental therapy. It built the strength and kept the knee flexible just as good as actual therapy.

Well, surgery is on for tommorrow. No set time so I'll have to get there early. He started the blood thinners this afternoon.
As long as Dad pulls through okay, this can turn out to be funny. He will be requesting the same nursing home as Mom is in for his therapy.:67302::duh:
I want to be a fly on the wall for that one!!!! I can see the 2 of them roaming in their wheel chairs annoying the crap outta one another, rotflmao.
Bet my Mom gets the devil look when she thinks about him being there with her. When I told her about it, she laughed, and had to bless herself.

I'm so happy!! My cell phone is finally working. And at a most important time too. FINALLY!!!
You see, I had my Verizon house number ported to a cell phone. I've had the number for 15 years and didn't want to loose it. But its taken forever to get it fully operational. For 2 weeks, I haven't been able to receive incoming calls to the cell. They were still going to the house. I knew when I signed up it would take some time, but not this long. They had originally said 7 days. And that a cell to cell port is much easier.
Thanks for the continued support for my Dad. You guys are the best.
Surgery today, I'm up bright and early, and hope everything goes great. Dad wants me to call this morning before I leave to see if they have given him a time but I doubt they have. My Brother went ahead and went to work and I'll do the morning-afternoon shift and he'll come to the hospital when school lets out and be there for the evening shift. So, we have the whole day covered. One, or both of us, will be there for Dad.

Ouch, Jess. OMG, how horrible. I won't even ask how you did that. There called accidents for a reason.
Thats good to know. Never thought about the possible theraputic value of the stick. I hope it helps my Dad to recover like it did for you. His truck is his new baby.

Just got off the phone with him. They were going to take him in to surgery at 6am. Wheeled him down there and everything, and then an emergency came in. Back to wait and see. I'm glad they didnt' take him in at 6am cause he was all alone.
I'll be heading out in a bit and I'll update whenever I get home.

Things like that happen for a reason, so, drive carefully, and if you're there when he wakes up, you both will feel better.
He'll be groggy most of the day tho, don't expect much.
Will he go to a nursing home for therapy? They often do this now for a month or so as getting therapy in at home will only be 3 times a week at best. In a facility they can get it 5 days a week.
I was a VNA nurse for years, BTW.
Hospital's are dry, so bring him some ChapStick.
Good luck!! Get some coffee, and again, drive safe.
Keep us up to date.
Prayers being sent up right now for a successful day for you all.

I'm gonna drive super-safe. Tampa traffic stinks. They'll run ya over!!!
Yes, he'll be in a nursing home for therapy and he said the Dr. mentioned about a month in one. IIRC, when my Husband's Nan had the surgery, she was only in rehab for a week or 2, followed by the in home therapist 3 days a week like you mentioned. I like the longer stay in the nursing home because as you say, he will get the therapy every day.
I'll grab some chap-stick on my way. Thanks for the prayers.:happy0207:

My accident was work related. We had to clean the inside of a machine with a pressure washer and since I am so scrawny I was the best fit for the job. Well I got in a bad position and couldn't let go of the trigger before the jet of water hit me in the knee. In other words I SHOT MYSELF.

Dad is doing awesome!!:zm10:
Quite a few bone experts looked at his x-rays prior to surgery. They were unsure of how bad his cartilage was and decided it was best to wait until they opened him up to get a better glimpse of the damage.
In the end, they didn't do the full hip replacement, just fixed the broken socket. Dad was taken back to a regular room instead of ICU. He was a bit confused and foggy when he woke up, asking the same questions over and over again, mainly, he wanted to know if he was "Bionic Man" lol.
He's weak, tired, and resting. I haven't called him this morning, yet. But I'm sure he's in more pain today and he already knows that they will have him up and walking some time today.
Course, he had me go by to visit Mom lastnight and let her know that his heart and lungs were good and that he isn't dead yet, lol. {They have the weridest love/hate relationship known to man} So, his sense of humor is there which is good.
Thanks for all the prayers and positive thoughts, guys.:1222423:

A few years back he had a total hip revision, again he was up and walking the next day. So I'm sure they will have your Dad up and about in no time. Even though they didn't give your Dad the total hip replacement I'm sure he'll feel much better in no time at all. BTW, DH was home from the hospital within a week on both occasions. He was about 54 when he had the revision.

Dad is back on home turf. He was transported to the nursing home Mom's in tonight. YIPPY!! No more Tampa traffic for me.
He'll be in rehab for 7-10 days. WITH MOM!!!!:hifive:
She wheeled herself down to his wing so fast when I told her he was there. They were happy to see one another. She with a Happy B-Day balloon tied to her chair from Sunday. And he with his Get well soon logo.:67302:
Now, the fun begins. Deep down, they love each other so much. But they cannot stand to live together.
