Skeletal remains found; deputies hope jewelry can lead to identity
February 28, 2008
AUGUSTA, Ga.---Richmond County deputies turned to the public for help today in trying to identify some skeletal remains found in March 2007.
Deputies released a photograph of some jewelry found with the remains. It consists of a dolphin ankle bracelet and a necklace with a cross.
The remains were found in some woods off the 700 block of Laney Walker Extension nearly a year ago.
Forensic analysis shows the woman was a white female, 25 to 40 years old, about 4'9" to 5'3", with brownish hair.
If you have information, or think you can identify the jewelry, call Investigator James Kelly in the Homicide Division at 706 821-1075.

I found this dated Nov. 9, 2007
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.-- Some families in Augusta and Aiken County are waiting for word about a missing loved one, but that news may not be what they are hoping to hear.
This after female human remains are discovered in woods off of Austin Graybill Road Wednesday night in North Augusta.
On Wednesday night, woods in North Augusta turned into a crime scene when someone found human remains scattered and badly decomposed.
"It's obvious the remains have been here for quite some time." says Lt. Tim Pearson with North Augusta Public Safety.
Thursday the remains were excavated. Investigators say underwear on the body suggests it is a woman. The other clothing on the body was rotted. But, tags suggest the woman may have worn larger clothing.
A lot of possibilities but no definite answers.
"TV it all happens in an hour. Not the case here. We're slow. Very methodical." says Lt. Pearson.
A long wait that just got even longer, the autopsy now pushed back until Monday; putting the families of several local missing women on alert.
Here are some of them:
39-year-old Karen Pryor. She disappeared from Augusta in September of 2006.
76-year-old Sadie Ednie who wandered away from her retirement home back in 1992 and 15 years later, still no answers for her family.
34-year-old Lisa Shuttleworth of Aiken is another possibility. She vanished in 2004 and is the county's only active missing person case.
Joining those families is Deborah Dill's. We last spoke with them in May.
"This is an absolute nightmare." says Dill's daughter Amanda Daniels.
A nightmare made worse by false hopes. Dill went missing in March of 2006. And last November, a body surfaced in some Thomson woods.
A bit of hope that turned into disappointment; it turns out the body was that of another 48-year-old missing woman, Lula Bell Scott.
Dill's family hopes this time is different. Here's why:.Richmond county investigators tell News 12 the only dental records they've sent to be looked at in this case are Deborah Dill's.
That might bring some closure the family has long been looking for. "Whatever the reason. If anybody knows anything..if they would just call and help us put an end to this nightmare." pleas Daniels.
And it's not just those families that are paying close attention to this case. Since the remains were not far from I-20, there is the possibility this is another missing woman from another area.
The autopsy was pushed back for scheduling conflicts. It should take place Monday in Newberry.

Karen Pryor
AUGUSTA, Ga. --- Remains found two years ago are finally positively identified as a missing Augusta woman.
Now, her family is pleading for answers to find out what happened to Karen Pryor. She is the Augusta woman who disappeared in September 2006.
Skeletal remains found in some woods off Laney Walker extension in March 2007 were positively identified as Karen this month.
Karen's family told News 12 exclusively that while they feel they have part of the puzzle, now they want the whole picture.
Karen Pryor, a mother of two, was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her second grandchild when she disappeared.
"It's awful. " Christine Hall says Karen wasn't only her sister-in-law, growing up they were best friends. "We know Karen just didn't go under a tree and die. "
But it's where investigators now say they found her. Her bones found scattered by train jumpers..
"It is really hard to finally find out, after waiting," says Hall.
Now the near three year long wait since her disappearance has few answers.
"We think it was a crime." Sandy Slowinski is Hall's daughter and Karen's niece. "She was not found with undergarments or pants and she didn't have on shoes or socks, that's just really unusual."
Her remains were so badly decomposed, investigators could not determine a cause of death.
"Right now we're just kind of stuck," explains Slowinski. "We really don't know where to go from here, we really just need some closure."
Investigators say it doesn't help they have conflicting reports about the night Karen disappeared. One story told to investigators, Karen was on a drug binge looking to go find Jesus.
"That doesn't seem like my aunt to be on a binge looking for Jesus, that just doesn't add up to her character," says Slowinski.
Now the family hopes someone will come forward.
"We just want justice for Karen, because Karen was a good girl," pleads Hall.
Karen's boyfriend was the last person to see her alive. Investigators have never named him as a suspect, or even been able to confirm if foul play was involved.
If you have any information, you're asked to call Richmond County at 706-821-1080.
