OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former teacher accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student said it was the boy's idea to flee to Mexico and that he told her he would kill her if she left him.
She said she panicked before they fled to Mexico, but didn't think authorities would come after her. "I was scared to death," said Peterson, who faces federal charges that could result in 10 years to life in prison.
She hoped rumors about them would blow over.
"I really thought it just might go away," Peterson said. "And I know that sounds crazy, but that's what I thought."

I was watching Dan Abrams last night and he had her lawyer on who was saying that the 13 year-old may be older... closer to 16. He brought up the fact that the kid was an illegal immigrant and therefore he may not even know his own age. He continued by saying that we should at least look into the possibility of the teacher being the "victim." Her lawyer was saying that they are not disputing the statutory rape charge, but are challenging the kidnapping aspect of it. I guess in her state, she's facing life in prison for that. Anyway, I found the whole thing bizarre. (eta: her lawyer was full of crap, imo. He seemed to be overly-focussing on his illegal status.)
She needs to be locked up and not allowed near minors - ever. However, I do not think that life in prison is fitting for her - I think it's too extreme. With that said, I have to admit that the first I heard of this was last night so I'm ignorant on the background and details of this case.

Let her explain this - Peterson described stops in Colorado, Utah and California _ including two trips to the beach and a day at Disneyland _ before the pair crossed the border into Mexico. At some point, he would have had to use the toilet, giving her plenty of time to get away. What an idiotic story.
I still can't get my head around the fact she didn't think LE would go after her.
And Coffee15tj in OC made the observation that the name Peterson is shared by too many wackos. It is rather an odd coincidence.

I don't know if it's me or what? But it seems to me that there are a lot of women going after chicken meat these days and they just keep getting younger and younger. What does a grown woman see in a 13 or for that matter a 16 yr old boy? most of them don't even have pubic hair!

O, remember that one who married the kid? IS that the Mary you are talking about? What was her name? Mary Kay LeTourneau.
What was he, 12?
Give me a break, there's plenty of grown men around, no need to tap the elementary school's.
Why are they all teachers?

I watched that show the other night too, and I generally love Dan Abrams but he was making me sick! He was supposedly playing "devil's advocate" (sounded like he believed what he was saying though ) and he kept on about (paraphrased), "Well wait a minute, wait a minute.....let's just say this boy was very AGGRESSIVE......are you saying that a boy that age cannot be the aggressor?" :shock:I didn't get his point.....he was being sympathetic I think, to the boy's attorney. Well gee!!!!!!!!!!........OF COURSE BOYS THAT AGE CAN BE THE AGGRESSOR! That's not the POINT! The point IS, that she is the ADULT and SHE is the one who needs to say NO!!!!!!!......no matter HOW aggressive he is!
No brainer!!!!! Dan Abrams lost me that night!

Double standard. There's something wrong with any adult who wants to be with young teens. Why didn't she just say NO?? He couldn't have aggressed at anything without her invitation.
Nancy Reagan, where are you?
No brainer is right, I tried to catch Dan last night, but he annoyed me, so I turned on Snapped instead.

I wish some teacher had "molested" me when I was 15 even if it did traumatize me for the rest of my life (yeah, right). There wouldn't have been a trial because there wouldn't have been any complaining witness to testify against her.

I read your post, Beowulf, to my husband. He nodded and said, "That's right!".
