I saw a clip about this on GMA this morning and was sickened by videos shown of puppy mills and the sound of those dogs barking. It was so upsetting. I wonder why is this allowed to continue? We love our dogs, right? As a country? Why are we allowing them to be bred this way and in so doing have millions of genetic clusterf's created when millions of sound healthy animals are destroyed in shelters every year? WTF is wrong with us? Why aren't we fixing the problem? We need to do whatever it takes to put and end to puppy mills! And we need to get on it NOW!
I now believe that close to EVERY pet store that *sells* (petco and petsmart have space available for rescues, other smaller places may also!) puppies is going to in some way give money to a puppy mill. If you want a dog with papers, do your research and find a REPUTABLE BREEDER and visit the site trust your gut... don't go through a pet store, please!
WHAT ELSE?! We've got enough animal lovers and great thinkers out here, what else can we do to put a stop to these horrible awful places? :1187603408.CR.Mothe

Jon Patch with Talkin'Pets is very against puppy mills (and kitty). He talks about it quite frequently on his show.
I believe he said (or someone did) that for every pup sold at a pet store 2 more are bred to be sold there. And once they hit a certain age if they aren't sold they are put down.
It's sickening! I have never liked those stores as it killed me not to be able to take them all home.
People need to NOT buy from them. And the true facts need to come out about the treatment and health of the animals from stores.

I worked in a pet store that sold dogs. PETLAND CARY in CARY NC :D now known as the PET PAD but in the same location in CARY NC... lol I was in high school and wanted to work with animals. The pay was on commission... 12% so I had to sell $50 worth of animals and animal supplies each hour to make $6. Anyway, our line was that our puppies came from a breeder who bred for show dogs, and we go the dogs that were 'pet quality' from those litters. All from the same breeder in Kansas. She bred everything from Soft Coated Wheatons, to chis, poms, paps, schnauzers, little terriers, brussels griffons, you get my picture shihs, lhasas, japanese chins... and so on.. but no not a puppy mill. I am glad that I never sold a dog... I did actually sell a pap once, but she was returned and I didn't get my blood money er commission and I'm glad for that.
And while I'm fussing. DOWN WITH MARSHALL FARMS AND THEIR FERRET FACTORY!

keep in mind that the AKC makes money every time a dog is registered, no matter where it comes from. that's why every time legistlation is brought up, they shoot it down. the AKC is NO friend to dogs.

oh and to say 'put down' or euthanized about how these dogs are destroyed when they can't sell and cant' produce anymore is really a sugar coating most of the time... some are actually discarded in trash heaps, some tossed outside... I don't want to know all of what goes on, I just want to stop it!!

You would think they'd want to do anything they could to disassociate from this sort of thing!! How much money could it possibly be worth? :thud2:
AKC doesn't register pit bulls anyway. :000:

the puppy mill pays for the papers & the new owners pay for the papers. i don't know what the mills pay, but i think the minimum new owners pay to have an AKC registered dog is $35. you do the math.

I know. I just can't bring myself to think of the worse. It's bad enough it happens but it makes me sick.
You should actually think of saving up some money and making an infomercial about this topic and see if you can get it on some radio stations or TV if you wanted to be ON tv. Maybe even start by doing public access. You'd be good at it.

I agree with you Roe, I would never buy a pet from a pet store again, did that once when I was a kid but ever since all of our pets have been either people giving them away or someone finding an unwanted animal in their yard and dropping them off at our home!

That's a great idea Roe! Maybe when I get up north I'll find a way to get images of some local mills or go to Lancaster county PA. I hear they're thick there.

Just be careful! In states where puppy mills are legal, the breeders aren't technically doing anything wrong. If you get kennel names in your shots.t could get you into trouble, if they are made public without permission.
Should you find something wrong, (and we all know there's plenty of that) you'd better be able to prove it.
They'd probably go after you for trespassing! There's a lot of money at stake for the creeps who abuse these animals, and money makes people crazy.
In a lot of states (like mine) you can report until you're blue in the face, it gets relegated to the bottom of the pile, because they just don't consider it pressing enough to investigate. It's infuriating.

Wow, I didn't realize that there were still states in the US like that, I thought they were becoming more understanding about animal rights and that puppy mills were wrong even though not illegal still in some places. I am really disappointed about reading that. :lex_10:

I'll not be tresspassing if I'm 'browsing' for the pup of my dreams, right? That's just a rouse ;) perfectly legal.

Yep. Though if they sell on the property, they'll probably bring the pups to you, rather than letting you go where they're keeping the poor animals they're breeding to death.
If they give you permission to take pictures then it's on them.
