Grimes county
"A simple logging and clearing effort near Richards led to the gruesome discovery.
It was Saturday afternoon that authorities say the skeletal remains were found in a densely wooded area off County Road 234. That's north of Richards and south of Shiro on the east-central side of the county."

Authorities are now saying the human remains found Friday in Grimes County may be several years old.
The skeletal remains were found in a densely wooded area off County Road 234 South of Shiro.
Grimes County officials say the bones appear to be more than 10 years old, and probably never would've never been discovered had some workers who were clearing the area not stumbled upon them.
So far, authorities say no gender, race or cause of death is known.
But the remains have been sent to a forensic lab at the University of North Texas in Denton

Remains those of man, police report
Staff Report
The skeletal remains found near Shiro in Grimes County belonged to a white man in his mid-20s who was between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, investigators said Wednesday.
Other details about the remains found in a wooded area last weekend are limited, but investigators said they had a potential link to the man's identity.
Medical examiners determined that the man had been dead since the late '90s. No bullet or blunt trauma wounds were found, and the cause of death is unclear, authorities said.
The Grimes County Sheriff's Office has received more than a dozen calls from area authorities reporting missing people, and eight of those matched the description, said Sheriff Don Sowell.
One person has been identified as a likely match, and investigators are comparing dental records. Authorities said they hoped to have the man identified by the end of the week.
"And then we will try to figure out how he died and how he got there," Sowell said.

Quite a few possibilites, and I hope it works out that they can ID the person. Maybe once they know who it is they can look at the circumstances of their disappearance and get a clue if foul play was involved.
Thank you for the updates, Nut.

Major Setback in IDing Remains Found in Grimes County
Posted: 6:53 PM Apr 16, 2008
Just as a mystery was about to be solved, a major roadblock Wednesday is setting the investigation back.
Grimes County authorities were beginning to zero in on identifying human remains found south of Shiro and were hoping to identify them Wednesday, but now, there's a major hold up.
Although the sheriff's office is pretty sure they know who the person is, a key piece of the puzzle is missing.
Investigators thought they could use dental records to make the positive ID, but late Wednesday afternoon, detectives learned the dentist didn't have those records.
Now, DNA is an option that could be used to make a positive match. However, that could slow down the momentum this case was making.
It's only been five days since the remains were discovered in a densely wooded area off County Road 234. On Tuesday, authorities revealed the remains were that of a 20 to 30 year old white male, between 5'5" and 5'9" and weighed about 140 pounds.
Sheriff Don Sowell says he still hopes they can get a definite ID soon so that the family may finally have some closure.
"That will give us an opportunity to notify next of kin, give them notification, so that they can make preparations for returning their loved one in a proper respectful way," Sowell said.
Loggers stumbled upon the remains last Friday while working on clearing the area. More bones were also retrieved Tuesday.
The sheriff's office, Texas Rangers, and the FBI worked together to retrieve the remains. Since then, they have been under the microscope of forensic examiners in Denton.
Examiners don't know what caused the person's death. There is not enough there for them to go off of at this time.
Once investigators make a match, they'll begin looking into how he died in the woods, apparently more than ten years ago.

According to the Navasota Examiner newspaper the Sheriff's office requested the TX Rangers and the FBI to send a recovery team to gather the remains. This is an extremely professional manner of handeling this case. So your spewing and hateful remarks towards the authorities are non-factual. Your disrespect pales to compare with the agonizing grief the family is suffering. Go start a blog somewhere else if you want to be so hateful.

Kudos to Don Sowell and the Sheriff's department. Don stated,"...for returning their loved one in a proper respectful way,...". This is how everyone who comments here should be acting, in a respectful way! Remember the family of the found person does read these comments. This is someones loved son, husband, etc. Would you make rude comments at a funeral in ear shot of the family of the deceased, surely not!

I knew everyone when I lived on that street. These fine folks worked in respectable jobs, postal clerk, teacher, prison guard, some elderly people in their 80's and even a Buddist Temple Priestess. Not your drug-lab types. Excellent neighbors who would give you the shirt off their backs. Good people who would assist in time of need, with love and careing ways. I seldome locked my door for that matter, could you say the same?

The reason the FBI is involved will be revealed when they ID the remains, if it is indeed who they are thinking it may be. Until then condescending remarks about drug labs are disparaging remarks that hurt the family of the missing person.

Thank you, former grimes county resident. Too much goes on in that end of the county that the sheriff's dept. does nothing about. I wonder how people who were busted with a meth lab never spent ONE DAY in prison?????

I agree with the comment posted at 8:41 AM. I am glad that the Texas Rangers and the FBI are envolved, because in Grimes County, that is the only way the investigation will be handled properly!

I don't think it is likely one could die in the woods of natural causes if one is found in a shallow grave. Hopefully they will be able to determine the cause of death and how this person came to be at the location.

The reporter stated the investigators would look into how this person died in the woods after identification is made.I guess this reporter is assuming that this person died at the spot they were found. The possibility that this person was murdered elsewhere and taken to this spot is not an option I guess.

Authorities ID Human Remains Found in Grimes County Save Email Print
Posted: 6:55 PM Sep 26, 2008
Authorities in Grimes County say they now have a positive identification on some human remains found near Shiro in April.
The Sheriff's Office was able to make a match through DNA.
However, the name of the individual is not being released at this time while they try to notify the family of the victim.
Authorities do not suspect foul play, and believe rather the victim hanged himself in the woods twelve years ago.

Apparently there was more than one set of remains found
http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/30398374.html
Investigators also used the very same medical examiner's office, to I.D. a different set human remains also found in Shiro back in April.
"A lot of people have asked if this is that this case, is it connected to this case," Sowell said. "And it was of interest because it's not that far away geographically, and as it turned out it was not."
The Grimes County Sheriff's Office was searching through hundreds of acres of woods Thursday in hopes of finding Carlos Rodriguez.
Rodriguez vanished from his Grimes County home nearly four years ago.
Investigators stumbled upon the remains during that search. However, an official identification of the body has not yet been made.

The man now has a name!!! RIP Donny Lynn Allen
Body identified as missing person
Donny Lynn Allen of Montgomery went missing more than 23 years ago. Although his vehicle was discovered on C.R. 234 in Grimes County shortly thereafter, no trace of him was found until this spring, when a logging crew discovered skeletal remains off C.R. 234 near Shiro on April 11.
The remains, sent to forensic anthropologist Dr. Harold Gill-King for DNA analysis, were positively identified last week as those of Allen, who was 22 years old at the time of his disappearance.
According to Grimes County Sheriff’s Investigators Travis Higginbotham and Blake Jarvis, Dr. Gill-King ruled the manner of death as undetermined because not enough remains were found at the site to render an opinion. Investigators did find a rope tied in a hangman’s noose near the remains found in April.
According to investigators, Allen was last seen the night of Feb. 25, 1995, when he left his employer’s residence, using the employer’s truck, to go to a store in Richards. Allen was not seen nor heard from after that.

He went missing in "95 but the article above says missing 23 yrs. ago. Either way it's been a long time. Glad they found him although sad to have ended this way.
I wonder if his remains were found real close to where the truck was found on that same road.
My condolences to the Donny's family.
