WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. -- WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. -- Testimony continued Monday in the trial of Jean Pierre Orlewicz, accused in the so-called "thrill kill" slaying of Daniel Sorensen, with the defendant breaking down in tears for the first time since the trial began, but jailhouse tapes revealing a darker side to the defendant.

Orlewicz, 18, of Plymouth Township is charged with first-degree murder and the dismemberment of Sorensen.

He took the stand and described how he killed Sorensen in an act that he's claiming as self-defense.

"I said, 'Dan, don't,' " Orlewicz testified. "And he looked at me from the corner of his eye and he straightened out his arm like he was going to shoot Alex right in the face and I kind of grabbed him with my left arm and stabbed him in the back at the same time."

Orlewicz was asked how he felt as he was killing Sorensen.

"I was freaking out when we first were doing it," Orlewicz said. "Then I just decided that if I didn't do something now that it would be too late later to try and do anything. So I just kind of, like, made a decision and went with it."

Family friend Janice Neal, testified first on behalf of Orlewicz. She called him a "warm and caring person." Orlewicz became very emotional during Neal's testimony as she described that he was a sweet kid who she considered a friend.

Orlewicz's father, William, also took the stand on Monday to talk about his son. He said he is not aggressive, he was never in trouble and overall a good kid. He said he was not aware that his son drank or used drugs.

"It seems so far out of character that it's hard to believe," said William Orlewicz about the allegations.

Prosecutor Robert Moran played several taped phone conversations from jail between Orlewicz and his father hoping to show the defendant had anger issues. Several times throughout the tape, Orlewicz swore excessively and became very angry at his parents and their choice for an attorney for him. Moran said the tapes showed Orlewicz did talk to his son about the case after his father had claimed he had not.

"I'm not even going to court if I don't have a 90 percent chance that I’m walking out of the courtroom. … What's the (expletive) point. There's no point."

School friends also testified on Monday about Orlewicz's MySpace page and the video games he played, including Grand Theft Auto.

Orlewicz took the stand around 2:15 p.m. on Monday and testified how he knew Daniel Sorensen. In his testimony he said, "He threatened me. He was going to kill my girlfriend, my brother and my family."

He described Sorensen as pushy and bossy. He said he thought Sorensen was part of organized crime. Orlewicz talked about how they lured Sorensen to his grandfather's house to extort money from another person and said he never intended to steal money or kill Sorensen.

Orlewicz told the court that Sorensen pulled a gun on him when he thought the plan had gone wrong. Orlewicz said he feared for his life and that is why he killed Sorensen.

He said he did not jump Sorensen from behind nor slash his throat as previous testimony showed.

Orlewicz said he thought Sorensen's family was going to come and kill him because "I just killed Dan," he told the court.

Orlewicz admitted to cutting Sorensen's body into several pieces after panicking. He also admitted during testimony that he burned his fingertips.

"I didn't want anyone to be able to ID him," Orlewicz said.

I couldn't believe how JP told his story of how the murder happened, his voice quickened like he was reading a script of a published work and telling it from someone looking down and seeing it all take place. It was surreal. And my stomach knotted. This kid is as cold as they come, he had no remorse in his voice, didn't care that a man was dead.

I thought the defense was going to call the good Dr. back to the stand. But, closing arguments is fine with me. JP deliberately murdered DS and would do it again and IMO it's time to send him to prison for life. If he thinks he will get away with just 10 years or less, then he is in for an eyeopener. I hope.

That was my understanding also about the Dr. But, I'm wondering if they changed their mind. It seems that JP would be scheduled to be the last witness to testify; which he did.

Also, the defense did not rest their case yesterday. I'm kinda thinking they will rest first thing this morning.

Another one who could care less about another human beings life. I thought the another ethylene glycol murder trial was going to go to court last month too but the day they were scheduled for opening statements, defense medical expert had a medical emergency and had to be hospitalized. So, the OS didn't happen and the jury was dismissed. Court was postponed until June. Her name is Julie too.

I can understand not taking notes. They would have started with the first two sentences, then marked through them to note JP's change in story. Their notebook would have been cross through on every other line. I missed Jean's interpretation of the jurors. I bet they are sitting there waiting for him to explain why it was necessary to cut the guy's head off in self-defense.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't we hear the Pros mention a stab wound to the heart yesterday? If so, that could have been the fatal wound. I have had a problem envisioning JP slitting DS's throat during a struggle. Unless, DS was on the floor, on his stomach, and JP was sitting on DSs back, grabs the head and slits the throat. DS's would've fought off any other scenario. He was a big man. 100 pounds on JP. So I can see him not slitting the throat until DS was completely incapacitated or deceased.

I didn't realize the phones were out for 3 days. But man, it all fried. My coach Cheryl? My cheer coach, my right arm, my dear friend--owns a hair salon in town. She and her sister have owned it for years--right across the street from the high school. IT was also hit by lightning---and the electric system ignited and burned most of the place down. Just losing my phone seems mild in comparison. We have indeed had enough of this carp to last a lifetime.

We heard that he stabbed him in the back numerous times first, jumped him, tackled him.

I agree; they will have a verdict within a 1/2 hour. It will probably take them 4 hours to get through the instructions. There are so many counts they have to consider.

Premediated murder
Felony murder
Manslaughter
Larseny
Distruction of a corpse

I think there were a couple of more.

oh yes! i need to check my new 'stash' of books and see if i have any more bugliosi books! i read helter skelter a loooong time ago-- he co-authored that one. so the one i was talking about on the book thread is really the only one i've read by him! he also wrote "outrage" about the OJ trial!
the ones where he is the actual prosecutor tho, i think would be the best! very educational!

:1187603408.CR.Mothe So sorry for your friends. Are they going to start over?

Yes, his repeating the testimony of what happened is chilling.

They moved into the old Tea House (a beautiful old renovated Victorian house), on the main drag in Old Town. I think it took them 2 days (and their whole huge extended family) to get set back up. Cheryl is absolutely amazing. I bet they are more successful than ever. Some people just Git 'Er Dun.

It's the same old damage---but Cheryl's fire is new.

JP shows no emotions, really, but rage. And disrespect, of course. He really isn't going to do well in prison. Can you imagine?

NO remorse, no sign of remorse and not even an ATTEMPT to display remorse.

Little monster.

:girl_sad: Poor Cheryl. :1222423:

I agree! His range of emotional is is narrow, and to the negative in terms of being appropriate.

I'm not sure where he will fit in, in prison. He seems like the type who will play tough, and attempt to fit in with the worst type there. I don't think he will fold like a little wussy. I just have a feeling.....he gives off a vibe of having an f you attitude.

I think the pros. is making a lot of sense. He's blowing the self defense claim out of the water.I'm glad there wasn't to much damage, sounds like you friend had a whole lot more.

Yeah but he hasn't been THERE yet. He's been in a cushy jail where he has access to the law library etc. In prison, he won't be in charge of ANYTHING. He sure does have an attitude but that won't fly with guards or fellow inmates for long.
