Search Continues For Missing Sailor

Search crews were on the job again today looking for a sailor who disappeared during a weekend trip to Pensacola Beach.
Craig Hoskie disappeared early Saturday morning. While search crews are combing the beach, a special request for help is being answered by anyone with a boat.
Charter boats are bring in their last catch of the day and it's been a good one for Captain Ed Lively. "That's a nine pound trigger fish"
But these days it's not just about fishing. Boat captains from around the area are being asked to take part in an important search, a search for a missing sailor.
"He was just missing. They don't know where he is, they assume he drowned," says boat owner Bill Fette.
NAS Pensacola student Craig Hoskie was last seen on the beach behind the Days Inn. "They found his wallet and stuff. It was like the kid had gone for a swim or something," say Fette.
A search of the beach and coastal waters since has turned up nothing But out on the water, more eyes are looking says Lively. "The Coast Guard broadcast an all mariners keep on the lookout for missing person or persons in such a such an area and stuff which gives everybody who hears it a kind of heads up to keep an eye out to look and see cause you never know."
So when Lively takes his boat out, he's looking for more than just fish. "Being a fisherman we're always looking for something on top, fish, not necessarily somebody, but we're always looking."
He hopes Hoskie is found soon as he and many more continue to watch the water for more than just fish.
Hoskie is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a student at the Naval Air Technical Training Center. His family has been notified his status with the Navy is now, "Whereabouts Unknown".

Deputies scanning Pensacola beach for sign of 22-year-old Craig Hoskie.

The Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office is continuing its search today for a Navy trainee from Albuquerque who has been missing since early Saturday, the Pensacola News Journal reported this morning. (Thanks to e-mailer Jonathan Davis for giving us the heads-up.)

Craig Hoskie, 22, a student at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, has been missing since about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, but was not reported missing until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office told the News Journal.

It's unclear why Hoskie's disappearance wasn't reported sooner, sheriff's office spokesman Glenn Austin told the paper.

Hoskie and his friends, all of whom are in the U.S. Navy, arrived at Pensacola Beach around 6 p.m. Friday, bought beer and checked into a Days Inn, according to a sheriff's office report.

After drinking and walking around the boardwalk, the men returned to their hotel room around 9 p.m. Friday, continued to drink, than decided to go for a walk and a swim in the Gulf of Mexico, the report said.

One of Hoskie's friends, 21-year-old Kyle Hamilton, told deputies he went back to the hotel after about an hour, and at that time he saw Hoskie sitting in a lounge chair on the beach, the News Journal said.

About two hours later, Hamilton told deputies, he found Hoskie's clothing, but there was no sign of Hoskie, the paper reported.

Hamilton told deputies at the time that he was "severely intoxicated" and that Hoskie had been "intoxicated to a lesser degree," according to the report.

The U.S. Coast Guard searched the Gulf for about an hour and a half on Monday but found no sign of Hoskie, and area boaters have been asked to keep a lookout for anyone in the water, the News Journal reported.

Deputies are scanning the beach today using ATVs, and security from the Pensacola Naval Air Station as well as the Naval Criminal Investigation Service are assisting the sheriff's department with the search, the paper said.

Hoskie has been at the Pensacola Naval Air Station since January and began classes at the technical training center on April 8, a spokesman for the NAS told the News Journal.

He had been training to be an aviation support equipment technician, the paper said.

Search for Missing Sailor

The Navy says Navy Airman Recruit Craig Hoskie has been missing since Friday at midnight.
(PENSACOLA, Fla.) April 14 -Search crews have been on the water all day Monday look for a missing sailor off Pensacola Beach.

The Navy says Navy Airman Recruit Craig Hoskie went missing Friday night. A friend told authorities he and Hoskie had been drinking Friday night when the sailor disappeared. The friend did not report the disappearance until 24 hours later.

Hoskie apparently left his clothes and wallet on the beach.

“We have a marine broadcast out to have all mariners keep a sharp look out,” said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Roger Sustaire.

It's unclear why Hoskie wasn't reported missing sooner, Austin said.

Hoskie of Albuquerque, N. M., and his friends, all of whom who also are in the Navy, arrived at the beach after 6 p.m. Friday. They bought beer and checked into the Days Inn, a Sheriff's Office report said.

After drinking and walking around the boardwalk, the men went to their hotel room about 9 p.m. They continued drinking and later decided to go for a walk and a swim in the Gulf of Mexico, the report said.

Kyle Hamilton, 21, one of Hoskie's friends, told deputies he went back to the hotel room after about an hour, and Hoskie was sitting in a lounge chair on the beach.

Hamilton said when he returned about two hours later he found Hoskie's clothing, but he couldn't find Hoskie, according to the report.

"Hamilton further advised ... that he was severely intoxicated and that Hoskie was intoxicated to a lesser degree," the report said.

Hamilton also gave the Sheriff's Office a bag that contained Hoskie's clothes, shoes, cell phone and wallet.

The U.S. Coast Guard searched the Gulf for about 1½ hours Monday but didn't find any signs of Hoskie, Sustaire said.

Area boaters have been asked to be on the lookout for someone in the water, Sustaire said.

Hoskie has been at Pensacola Naval Air Station since January and began classes at the center April 8, NAS spokesman Harry White said.

Hoskie was training to be an aviation support equipment technician.

White said trainees are given liberties, including leaving NAS for the weekend, after they have been there a certain length of time.

He said trainees can leave on a Friday and have to return the following Sunday.

NAS security and the Naval Criminal Investigation Service are assisting the Sheriff's Office with the investigation.

White said he could not discuss the fate of those who went to the beach with Hoskie.

"It's too early in the investigation to discuss that particular issue," he said.

Missing Sailors Family Consults Indian Medicine Man

The family of a missing sailor has arrived in Pensacola to be closer to the search for their son and brother. The native American family has consulted the tribe's medicine man and believe Craig Hoskie is still alive.
Carrying a photograph and relying on her Navajo heritage, Alberta Wanika is trying to find her son.
"I want to see him, to hold him, to hug him. I love my son. Please," she pleads crying.
Craig Hoskie has been missing for a week. It's believed he drowned during a midnight swim last weekend.
Since then searchers have scoured Pensacola Beach looking for any sign of him.
"He said he is alive, what the medicine man say he didn't go to the beach he went to another place on foot."
Two meetings with the medicine man has given Wanika hope. "He's alive. He's with a young lady hopefully he's with that young lady and she's taking care of him."
While the family still clings to hope, every indication is he is in the water. The search remains concentrated in the Pensacola Beach area but alerts have been sent as far west as Mississippi.
"I just want him back right now." Younger brother Kevin respects the families culture but knows there's a good chance his brother won't be coming home. He's searching for something else, "I'm looking for any miracle."
Searchers look from Pensacola Beach west to the Alabama line every day. So far, there's no sign of Hoskie.
The Coast Guard, Navy and Escambia County Sheriff's Office are all taking part in that search.

Missing Sailor: Medicine Man says He's Living near Pensacola

I emailed a Native American group that is in contact with the family's suport system. Their opinion/hopes and input from the familie's Medicine Man is that he is with a person, and ok.
I will foward anything that I find out.
The authorities give little credit to this, and have listed him missing.

Missing man presumed drowned

A 22-year-old Naval Air Technical Training Center student who disappeared in April is presumed to have drowned.

Craig Hoskie went missing the morning of April 12 after a night at Pensacola Beach with several friends.

Troy Brown, a missing persons investigator with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, said Wednesday that he and other investigators ruled out foul play or the theory that Hoskie went absent without leave.

“We’re pretty confident that he drowned,” Brown said. “We just don’t have his body, which means we have to keep an open investigation.”

Hoskie, of Albuquerque, N. M., and his friends, who also are in the Navy, arrived at the beach after 6 p.m. April 11. They bought beer and checked into the Days Inn, a Sheriff’s Office report said.

After drinking and walking around the boardwalk, the men went to their hotel room about 9 p.m.

They continued drinking and later decided to go for a walk and a swim in the Gulf of Mexico, the report said.

One of Hoskie’s friends told sheriff’s deputies that he went back to the hotel room after about an hour, and Hoskie was sitting in a lounge chair on the beach, the Sheriff’s Office said. The friend said Hoskie was gone when he returned to the beach two hours later.

The friend found Hoskie’s clothing, but he couldn’t find Hoskie, according a report.

With nearly two months passed since Hoskie’s disappearance, Brown said the active investigation has long been concluded.

“Our guys out at the beach are well aware of it, and all of the charter boat captains are well aware of it,” Brown said. “Every expert we talked to said if he did come up soon after, he would have been taken out to sea fairly quickly.”
