IMO there is only one reason a 31 yr old man would take off with a 12 year old child, and it terrifies me for her safety, both emotional and physical. I hope they find them very soon!

I agree with that, Roamer. I do not know what it's going to take for these young ladies to understand the dangers of running away. As parents we talk to our children but it seems it's not getting through to them.

It seems in the past few years with the technology of the internet missing children has risen anomalously.

Exactly! They're finding these kids on the internet, sweet talk them into thinking they're "in love" and then, who knows what?

Lorena Sanchez-Toledo, 12, has been looking for-ward to learning more about computers.

The Buford Middle School student recently finished her training with Computers4Kids, a pro-gram that helps low-income students improve their computer and learning skills. Sanchez-Toledo was going to have a mentor assigned to her to continue her studies.

However, Sanchez-Toledo hasn’t been in school Tuesday. She was reported missing after she left her home in the city’s Meadows neighborhood. Police said they believe she is with Jeremias Chagala-Mil, 31, of Charlottesville, and she is believed to be in danger. The Virginia State Police has issued an Endangered Missing Child Alert on her behalf.

On Friday night, city po-lice found Chagala-Mil’s 1997 red Mitsubishi near Sanchez-Toledo’s home, according to a Saturday news release from the department, and said he might have left the Char-lottesville area. Police have described Chagala-Mil as a 5-foot-4-inch, 150-pound Hispanic male.
Police Chief Timothy J. Longo said his department has partnered with the FBI to search for Sanchez-Toledo.

“None of us can imagine the sense of helplessness that Lorena’s family and friends are experiencing, but we are committed to accessing any and all re-sources at our disposal to ensure her safe return,” Longo said Saturday in a statement.

While police search for Sanchez-Toledo, her friends, family and teachers have been worrying about her, said Renata Germino, her English as a second language teacher.

“She has a lot of people at Buford who care about her, and we want her just to come back,” Germino said.

Germino described Sanchez-Toledo as a good-natured girl with a good sense of humor. Although she is smart, Germino said her student doesn’t always complete her homework on time.

“When she works hard, she does really well,” Germino said.

The teacher said her student, who will turn 13 next month, has told her she wants to improve her grades so she can earn a scholarship and attend college someday. Betsy Donahue, Sanchez-Toledo’s life science teacher, said her student’s grades and dedication already have improved.

Germino said Sanchez-Toledo loves to write and recently started reading the sequel to “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” by Jeff Kinney after staying up one night read-ing the first book. Sanchez-Toledo also is known for helping new ESL students, particularly ones who speak Spanish.

Students in Sanchez-Toledo’s classes have been worried about her, her teachers have said. In Germino’s classes, some of her friends have com-plained of stomachaches and feelings of anxiousness. In Dorothy Carney’s sev-enth grade English class, Sanchez-Toledo’s class-mates spent Friday’s news-paper time talking about everything they know about her and coming up with ways to help.

Before coming to Buford eight weeks into the school year, Sanchez-Toledo at-tended Johnson Elemen-tary School, Walker Upper Elementary School and schools in Albemarle County.

Friends and Teachers React To Missing 12-Year-Old

April 22, 2008
Tuesday marked one week that a 12-year-old Charlottesville girl has been missing. Her friends and teachers at Buford Middle School are hoping for her safe return.

Lorena Sanchez-Toledo's classmates and friends are worried about her. School officials say they have heard a lot of rumors about her disappearance and are having trouble concentrating and staying focused.

Buford Middle School has two counselors available to speak with the students to try and put their minds at ease. Some of Lorena's friends have complained of stomachaches and anxiousness.

Lorena was last seen leaving her Meadows neighborhood home after school last Tuesday. Police believe she may be in the company of 31-year-old Jeremias Chagala Mil.

"There is a big hole in our school right now because we need her back here," said Renata Germino, Lorena's teacher.

"We do believe that she is alive. We do believe that she is safe and we need for her to understand that we miss her and we want her to come home," said Eric Johnson, Buford Middle School Principal.

Police believe Lorena could be in danger. The FBI and state police are also involved in the search for this young girl. Charlottesville police say so far they have no reports of her whereabouts.

Missing girl found alive in Chicago
by Lindsay Barnes

Two weeks after 12-year-old Lorena Sanchez-Toledo disappeared from outside her home near the intersection of Route 29 and Hydraulic Road, Charlottesville police have announced that the FBI found her alive in Chicago and that she is safely returning home. Thirty-one year old Jeremias Chagala-Mil of Swanson Drive now faces local and federal charges in connection to the young girl’s disappearance, though the police have declined to announce the specific charges as of right now.

“We are extremely pleased we were able to resolve this case safely,” says Charlottesville police chief Tim Longo is the press release. “We are looking forward to returning Lorena to her parents and to her school where she belongs.”

Police also declined to note how they found the Buford Middle School student in Chicago, except to say that the arrest was “based on leads generated by local and federal authorities.”

Immigrant faces prison, deportation for sex with girl, 12

Published: April 29, 2009

A 32-year-old man who claimed his sexual relationship with a then-12-year-old girl was consensual will serve prison time before facing deportation to Mexico.
Circuit Judge Edward L. Hogshire sentenced Jeremias Chagala-Mil to 30 years in prison, suspending all but six years.

In November, Chagala-Mil pleaded guilty to rape as part of a plea agreement. Authorities have said Chagala-Mil had sex with the middle-school student several times, and that he wanted to marry her. Her mother discovered the relationship in April 2008.
Defense attorney Richard Davis explained that Chagala-Mil is illiterate in his native Spanish, didn’t pass the first grade and grew up on a sugarcane farm in rural Mexico. The defendant has told authorities that age is not a factor in romantic relationships in his home country.
“He said this young girl, who was 12 at the time, looked like she was sexually mature to him,” said Charlottesville Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Claude Worrell. “He said in Mexico, any girl who looks sexually mature is fair game to have sex with.”
Worrell disputed Chagala-Mil’s belief, saying in court Tuesday that a 12-year-old girl cannot have a consensual relationship with an adult nearly three times her age.

However, Davis said in court that Chagala-Mil had gone out on dates and discussed their relationship with the girl, who is now 13. Chagala-Mil now accepts the relationship has ended.
“I don’t think these people have a future, and he recognizes that,” Davis said in court.
In Charlottesville Circuit Court on Tuesday, Davis noted that the victim did not submit a victim-impact statement, which he said was telling.

Hogshire’s sentence included 20 years of good behavior and will prevent Chagala-Mil from having contact with his victim. Authorities discussed the likelihood of Chagala-Mil returning to the country illegally. Davis said in court that his client was in America less than a year before he was arrested.
Chagala-Mil has been incarcerated since July. Authorities said Tuesday that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had placed a detainer on Chagala-Mil, which will keep him in custody until the immigration agency decides what to do with him.

The man convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl from Charlottesville is going to jail for six years.

The girl's disappearance prompted a huge missing person search. Federal authorities eventually found Chagala-Mil and the girl together in Chicago.
