Teen canoeist missing at Spokane WA

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane County marine patrol searched for an 18-year-old man whose overturned and damaged canoe was found on the west bank of the swift-flowing Spokane River at Riverside State Park.

Kieman E. Norman's 12-foot canoe was found by his father and brother on Saturday morning.

Deputies say Norman put his canoe in the river about 6 p.m. on Friday just above the Devil's Toenail Rapids. They say Norman was not wearing his life jacket, which was recovered upstream from where they his canoe was located.

The search for Norman began on Saturday after he did not return home on Friday night.

The river is flowing quickly because of a recent snow melt. The water temperature is 36 degrees.

SPOKANE — The Spokane County marine patrol searched Saturday for a young man whose father found his damaged canoe on the west bank of the Spokane River shortly before noon.

Kiernan E. Norman, 18, put his 12-foot canoe in the river about 6 p.m. Friday just above the Devil's Toenail Rapid, about one mile above the intersection of Aubrey L. White Parkway and Rifle Club Road, said Deputy Wade Nelson.

A friend who helped launch the canoe said he saw Norman enter the rapid, one of the most dangerous on the river. He saw the canoe emerge below but could not tell if Norman was still in it because the light was fading, Nelson said.

Cpl. Jon Strickland of the Spokane Police Department said the boy was known not to come home every night, so his family did not become concerned until Saturday morning, when they began a search.

They spotted the canoe hung up in a willow just above the Plese Flats picnic area, the usual takeout for canoeists and rafters, then called rangers at Riverside State Park, who notified police about noon Saturday.

The canoe was recovered by the marine patrol, mostly volunteers, using a motorized raft.

Strickland said the friend saw a personal flotation device in the canoe, but Norman did not put it on. The PFD was recovered mid-afternoon Saturday above Rifle Club Road, Strickland said.

Norman's father told police his son had some canoeing experience.

Because the river has become murky and is moving swiftly with spring runoff, Strickland said, divers did not enter the water, which is about 36 degrees. At that temperature, someone in the water would have to make it to shore quickly before hypothermia sets in, he said.

Strickland said he was not sure if the search would resume today.

SPOKANE - Police have called off the search for 18 year-old Kiernan E. Norman, who disappeared after launching his canoe in the Spokane River.

Norman's 12-foot canoe was found by his father and brother Saturday morning.

Deputies say Norman put his canoe in the river about 6 p.m. on Friday just above the Devil's Toenail Rapids. They say Norman was not wearing his life jacket, which was recovered upstream from where his canoe was located.

The search for Norman began on Saturday after he did not return home on Friday night.

Norman's father said it was not unusual for the boy not to return in the evening, but when he did not return the next morning, his father went looking for him. Upon discovering the boy's overturned canoe, his father called police.

Kiernan E. Norman, 18, is missing. His damaged canoe was found the day after he launched it just above the Devil's Toenail rapid near the Bowl and Pitcher in Riverside State Park. That stretch of the river has a wild feel, and the rapids there are not designed for rafting amateurs. The water temperature was 36 degrees when Norman launched his canoe April 18; his body has not surfaced.

To put into perspective the temperature of the river water the day Norman disappeared, consider the story of Lynne Cox, an extreme cold-water swimmer known for endurance. In a recent New Yorker magazine article, she described her Arctic Circle swim in temperatures ranging from 28 to 34 degrees. After 10 minutes, she couldn't her feel arms or legs; she swam by instinct.

SPOKANE, Wash. - The body of an 18-year-old Spokane man missing since April 18 was recovered from the Spokane River about 11 a.m. Saturday and has now been identified.

Kieran Erik Norman disappeared that day during a canoeing trip in Riverside State Park. His overturned and damaged canoe was discovered downstream the following day.

Investigators believed that Norman might have tried to canoe the Devil's Toenail portion of the river. Water flow at the time was extremely high.

The canoe when recovered had a large hole in one of its sides.

The victim's body was found Saturday in the 9200 block of North Riverside Park Drive by a homeowner checking the condition of his dock.

Although the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Norman's identity, the cause of death remains undetermined.

Thanks for the update, Nut.

His name is spelled at least 3 ways in these articles. Maybe the correct name will show if they do an obit.

My condolences to his family and friends.
