Clarksdale mother missing; toddler found tied up in woods
Posted on Fri, Apr. 25, 2008
CLARKSDALE, Miss. --
Assistant Police Chief Lee Jackson said officers were questioning a "person of interest" Friday as the search continued for a missing mother whose 3-year-old son was found tied up in a wooded area near a Clarksdale church.
Jackson said no charges had been filed, and officials were not releasing the name of the person in custody.
Family members called Clarksdale police Wednesday to report that Katrina Dumas, 27, and her son, Fred Dumas, were missing.
Coahoma County Sheriff Andrew Thompson Jr. said the toddler was found Thursday night near Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Thompson said the boy had marks from being tied up and had suffered numerous insect bites while on the ground.
Officials said Fred was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., although the hospital said the boy was not registered there Friday.
Katrina Dumas' parents, Johnny and Catherine Dumas, were notified by a granddaughter that Katrina had not picked up Fred from school at the scheduled time Wednesday, authorities said.
Later that day, relatives spotted Katrina Dumas' gold Cadillac being driven in Clarksdale by someone other than her. The family alerted authorities after seeing the car. The Clarksdale Press Register reported Friday that police found the abandoned vehicle and discovered what appeared to be blood and possible hair in the trunk.
The vehicle was being processed by the state Crime Lab.
Several law enforcement agencies, including the Coahoma County Sheriff's Department and the Clarksdale Police Department, were searching for Katrina Dumas.

Boy found; mother missing
3-year old found tied up in wooded area
By ANDY ROSS, Staff Writer

After a Clarksdale woman and her 3-year-old son have been the subject of missing persons investigation since Wednesday afternoon, the son, Fred Dumas, has been found and is recovering at Le Bonheur Childrens Hospital in Memphis. As of press time Friday, the search for his mother, Katrina Dumas, is ongoing.
According to Coahoma County Sheriff Andrew Thompson Jr., Fred Dumas was discovered Thursday around 6 p.m. tied up in a wooded area surrounding Pleasant Grove Baptist Church between Farrell and Sherard.
Dumas was taken to Northwest Regional Medical Center then transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, where he is reportedly recovering in stable condition.
According to reports, Fred Dumas sustained no major injuries but had marks from being tied up and suffered numerous insect bites while on the ground.
Katrina Dumas, 27, of 743 School St. and her son were reported missing Wednesday afternoon to the Clarksdale Police Department.
According to reports, Dumas’ parents, Johnny and Catherine Dumas, were notified by their granddaughter, Rhodeisha, that Katrina had not picked up Fred from school at the scheduled time.
Later that afternoon, the family members then spotted Katrina Dumas’ gold Cadillac on Sixth Street being driven by someone other than her. The family alerted authorities after seeing the car.
The Clarksdale Police Department located the vehicle, which was abandoned in the 500 block of Aston Alley, and discovered what appeared to be blood and possible hair in the trunk. The vehicle is currently being processed by the Mississippi Crime Lab.
The case is still being handled as missing person’s investigation. While no charges have been filed, Katrina Dumas’s ex-boyfriend is reportedly currently in custody of the Clarksdale Police Department and is being referred to as a “person of interest.”
Authorities from Sheriff’s Department, Clarksdale Police Department, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, and the Parchman K-9 unit were involved in the search that discovered Fred Dumas.
The search for his mother continued until around 11 p.m. yesterday in the same vicinity her son was found, and resumed early this morning along with Coahoma County Fire and Rescue and Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee patrol.
Thompson says they are exploring all leads but are focusing on the area surrounding Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
“We have gotten some conflicting information but are trying to check out all leads. We are resuming the search today and re-evaluating some other information to see if we need to move to another location,” Thompson said.

Clarksdale, MS Mother and Son Missing
This is yesterday's article 4/24/08
(4/24/08 - Clarksdale, MS)
Police in Clarksdale, Mississippi need your help finding a Mid-South woman and her 3 year-old son. Katrina and Fred Dumas have been missing for more than 24 hours. So far the only thing investigators have found is the car she was driving. Investigators say when they found the car, there were blood stains in the trunk. Family members say Katrina Dumas' ex-boyfriend may be to blame.
Katrina's mother Catherine Dumas suspected something was wrong. "I stayed up all night, I just couldn't rest." And more sleepless nights could follow until she finds her daughter and her 3 year-old grandson. Katrina was last seen Wednesday morning. The family filed a Missing Persons Report later that day. Shortly after the report was filed, the car Dumas was driving was seen going South on Sixth Street, less than a block away from where the Dumas' live. That car was found abandoned a short time later, about a quarter-mile away behind a funeral home. Catherine Dumas tells us her daughter "was trying to get her life together and go on." Katrina Dumas works at a nearby Ford Dealership. Co-workers like Louise Turner are very shaken up by the recent events. "She's very close to her parents, and they're just devastated, her little boy is missing."
No arrests have been made, but Investigators say they do have Katrina Dumas' ex-boyfriend in custody. The Clarksdale Police Chief is calling him a "Person of Interest." The car Katrina Dumas was driving belonged to her father and has been taken to the Mississippi Crime Lab for testing.

It doesn't sound good for the mom either. I pray the little boy was not witness to anything that "may" have happened to his mother.

Police are still trying to figure out what Fred Leonard Jr. did on Wednesday. And as I write, they’re still looking for Katrina Dumas. Dumas, 27, is Leonard’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of their three-year-old son, Fred Dumas. Katrina and little Fred went missing on Wednesday. Thursday night, Fred Dumas was found alive, tied up face down behind a church ten miles from Clarksdale. The toddler suffered a snakebite and numerous insect bites, but is expected to recover. Katrina Dumas has not yet been found.
On Wednesday afternoon, Katrina’s parents were called by a granddaughter. Katrina hadn’t picked up little Fred from preschool on time. Just a short time later, a family member saw Katrina Dumas’ gold Cadillac driving down the street - but there was a man driving the car. No sign of Katrina. No sign of little Fred. Family called police for help. It was obvious by then that something was terribly wrong.
What happened on Wednesday? Did Fred Leonard pick up his son from daycare? Did Katrina manage to get Fred after all? Both Katrina and Fred Dumas were missing. And it appeared that Fred Leonard was driving Katrina’s car.
On Thursday evening, little Fred Dumas was found near the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church between the small towns of Farrell and Sherard, Mississippi. The toddler had been left for dead in the woods, tied face down on the ground. Snake-bitten and eaten alive by insects, the child was taken to the hospital where he was treated and may already have been released.
Investigators say that Katrina Dumas’ car was located abandoned. The car is being processed by the Mississippi Crime Lab after possible blood and hair evidence was discovered in the trunk. That doesn’t sound good at all.
Fred Leonard Jr. was brought in for questioning initially as a “person of interest”. But this evening, Leonard has been charged with child abuse in connection with his son’s injuries. As I write, he is still being questioned. And Katrina Dumas is still missing. Searchers continue to look near the area where little Fred was found.

It doesn't look good for katrina. I hope the little guy didn't witness anything happening to his mom.
I also hope it wasn't a copperhead that bit him.
It's hard for me to even try to vision this happening, imagine how he feels. He is old enough to tell LE what he saw. so sad!!

UPDATE 4/26/08 - Katrina Dumas was found dead last night about 9:30, not long after I posted this article. She had been shot in the head and dumped along the side of a rural road. Further information is at the bottom of the article.

UPDATE 4/26/08 - The body of Katrina Dumas was found at 9:30 Friday night. She had been shot in the head and dumped off a rural road in the Clarksdale-Sherard area. Katrina is survived by her parents, her nine-year-old daughter, and her son Fred, who continues to recover from his ordeal.
According to Katrina Dumas’ mother, Katrina and Fred Leonard Jr. had had an ongoing relationship spanning back ten years. He had been violent with Katrina in the past, Mrs. Dumas says, and Katrina had broken off the relationship when their son was born, after which Fred Leonard married someone else. At some point in the last year or so, Leonard and Katrina Dumas had an affair, which Katrina recently decided she could not continue. I guess Fred Leonard doesn’t like the word “no” very much.

God, this is sickening. I'll never comprehend how some can hurt their babies like this. Cases like this just rips your heart out in pain for the victims. I really hope there is no lasting effects for this little guy and hope he's been put somewhere where he's smothered w/love.

This is horrible. I cannot imagine a person having so much anger to kill someone else but to do what he did to his son is horrible. Fred is just a baby and to be exposed as he was is very hard to understand.
I sure hope he did not witness what happened to his mom.
There are so many people who do not take no for an answer and imo they are very dangerous. You just never know when a person with anger issues is going to explode.
My prayers go out to Katrina's family and her son. May the good Lord watch over them all as they try to deal with Katrina's death.
