Amber Alert for Wayland teen; suspect's vehicle found
Updated: April 28, 2008 10:07 PM
WAYLAND, Mich. (WOOD) -- A vehicle believed to be carrying an alleged abducted teenager and the suspect has been found in Albion, Indiana. But there is no sign of the those involved.
An Amber Alert was issued Monday afternoon for 15-year-old Wesley Ashton Ayers. Police say he was babysitting his siblings Saturday at their Wayland house. His mom came home around 2:30 a.m. and noticed he was gone.
Police believe 24-year-old Dana Lee Rider abducted him.
Investigators think Ayers is in extreme danger because Rider has been convicted of molesting a boy under the age of 13. He recently was released from prison and had been in Wayland for a week and a half.
Police say they were traveling in a 1997 black Kia Sportage that was reported stolen from behind the Wayland Police Department around the same time Ayers went missing.
Some students at Wayland High School overheard at a party about the possibility of a car being stolen and those involved going to Indiana or Pennsylvania. That information was related to Wayland police which turned their attention to Indiana.
Wayland Police Chief Dan Miller told 24 Hour News 8 four people were reported seen leaving that same Kia around 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Albion, Indiana. Then around 11:30 a.m., a woman reported her 2003 silver Pontiac Montana was missing.
Police in Albion were then alerted around 5 p.m. Monday that the Kia was parked for two days in an alley in the 500 block of North Orange Street. Officers arrived at the scene and turned the vehicle over to the FBI because the case has crossed state lines.
24 Hour News 8 was at Ayers' house when police called to inform his mom that they found the car. Shannon Ayers told us she wishes her son would come home.
According to authorities, Rider, Ayers and a 19-year-old neighbor, Casey Griffin, may be traveling in the Pontiac Montana with Indiana license plate number DQ1982.
Ayers is 6'0" tall, weighs 230 pounds, has brown eyes, brown hair, and a tattoo of a cross on his left leg.
Rider is 5'4" tall, weighs 155 pounds, has brown eyes, brown hair, and a large tattoo on his back and one on his right bicep. He has ties near Newberry and Mackinaw City.
If you have any information about this crime you are asked to call police.

WAYLAND -- Police in Indiana have located the stolen car believed to have carried a Wayland teenager and two other men, including a registered sex offender, out of West Michigan, authorities said.
An Amber Alert was issued today seeking help finding 15-year-old Wesley Ayers after his mother discovered him missing from their apartment about 5 a.m. Saturday, Wayland Police Chief Dan Miller said.
Miller said Ayers is believed to be with Dana Lee Rider, 24, and Kasey Giffin, 19. Rider was convicted of third-degree sexual assault against a 13- to 15-year-old boy in 2002, serving nearly five years in prison for the offense.
The trio allegedly stole a black Kia Sportage from behind the police headquarters early Saturday and have not been heard from since.
"We don't really believe (Ayers) was abducted, but maybe he was promised something to go along or talked in to it," Miller said. "It's out of character for him to leave or not tell his mom what he's doing."
Police believe Ayers could be harmed because of Rider's criminal history. The teenager and Rider met at a city park Friday afternoon, police said. They later hung out with Giffin, who lives in the same apartment complex as Ayers, and the two older men were overheard talking about stealing a car, witnesses told police.
Rider recently moved to Wayland and was living downtown in an apartment above a bar. He has no known ties to the area, Miller said.
The Amber Alert was not immediately issued Saturday because police were uncertain on the circumstances of Ayers' disappearance.
The Kia was found in Albion, Ind., by a man who saw four white males leaving the car early today. That man called police, who discovered the car had been reported stolen and contacted Wayland authorities.
Authorities in Albion told Miller that a Pontiac Montana was stolen about two blocks away from where the Kia was left. It is suspected the four men took that car, Miller said.
"They may be going to Pennsylvania; they might be going somewhere else," he said.
Miller said no other Wayland-area residents have been reported missing, and it is unclear who the fourth person is or how he came to be part of the group.

Wayland teen found in Tennessee; Amber Alert canceled
Posted by The Grand Rapids Press April 29, 2008 09:34AM
WAYLAND -- A missing 15-year-old boy, the subject of an Amber Alert after he left home with a registered sex-offender, was found safe this morning in Tennessee, Wayland police said.
Police were searching for Wesley Ayers and two other men when state police found them sleeping in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Athens, Tenn. Police had information they were in the area, and were checking hotels and parking lots.
Wayland police suspect Ayers was talked into leaving his mother's apartment on Saturday. An Amber Alert was issued Monday afternoon. Police found the stolen car they were believed to be riding in in Indiana.
His mother, Shannon Ayers, told police her son was baby-sitting three of her children while she cared for a sick relative when he left early Saturday.
Police did not believe he was abducted, but were concerned because he was with a registered sex offender, Dana Rider, 24, who recently moved to Wayland and befriended Ayers.
