Freshman William Jacobson was reported missing last night. He was last seen Sunday around 3:30 a.m., walking from a residence on Grandview Road back toward the Ithaca College campus and possibly his room in Terrace 11, Public Safety officials said.

Investigator Tom Dunn said the Office of Public Safety and the Ithaca Police Department are conducting the investigation jointly, but there are no leads. Dunn also said there is a multi-agency task force in place, including the Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Ithaca Fire Department and possibly the Ithaca Forest Rangers, searching for Jacobson. Dunn said no foul play is suspected.

Freshman Reece Lazarus said he was with Jacobson the night he was last seen. Lazarus said his friends became concerned after they realized Jacobson never returned to his room and his phone was off.

“We realized his phone had been dead, and [Jacobson is] a fairly consistent user of his phone,” Lazarus said. “Without him texting for a couple days, we figured something was wrong.”

According to an Intercom Alert, Jacobson was last seen wearing a white, long-sleeved dress shirt, navy blue vest, black dress pants and black dress shoes

Search for missing Ithaca student

ITHACA -- On Wednesday police in Ithaca will continue to search for missing college student William Jacobson. The 19-year-old is a freshman at Ithaca College.

Police say around 3:30 Sunday morning, Jacobson was at a party in a backyard on Grandview Avenue. He was last seen walking alone on nearby Hudson Place, friends thought he was heading back to campus. Friends who saw him earlier that evening said he seemed happy. Police say foul play is not suspected and they have been searching the area on foot and by air. They plan to expand the ground area they are covering. An alert about Jacobson's dis-appearance has been posted on facebook. In addition to information about the search friends are posting their thoughts.

"He's a real good kid, real sweet, really intelligent," says Alex Rosenblatt.

Tuesday night, students at Ithaca College held a vigil to show support for Jacobson and help each other through this tough time. Police say Jacobson has been known to hike trails in the South Hill area. They are also asking neighbors there to check their properties to see if he may have taken some kind of shelter. Police have also tried to track Jacobson down with his cell phone. It's either turned off or the battery has died so they can't use that.

Anyone with information should call Ithaca Police at (607) 274-1060.

Body of missing St. Paul man found

Searchers have recovered the body of a St. Paul man missing since Sunday in upstate New York, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has confirmed with local police.

New York State Police divers found the body, tentatively identified as that of William "Willy" Jacobson, Wednesday morning in a small pond in Ithaca.

Jacobson, 19, was a freshman at Ithaca College. He was last seen leaving a costume party off-campus early Sunday morning.

Friends in Ithaca said Jacobson left the party to return to his dorm room, Terrace 11, but never made it there. They also said Jacobson was drinking, but was not drunk.

St. Paul neighbors said Jacobson is a good kid and was always surrounded by friends.

"I'd see him head off with his hiking gear on. He always had a backpack with him, hiking boots and what not," said Jacobson’s neighbor in St. Paul, Bob Sullivan.

Ithaca College officials told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that Jacobson’s family flew into New York Tuesday.

The St. Paul School District confirmed Jacobson graduated from Central High School in 2007.

Body of St. Paul student tentatively identified

By ANTHONY LONETREE and MARY LYNN SMITH, Star Tribune

Last update: April 30, 2008 - 1:31 PM

The apparent death of a St. Paul man who went missing after he left a party early Sunday at Ithaca College in New York was being mourned by the campus community today.

Authorities say that a body tentatively identified as that of William Jacobson, 19, a 2007 graduate of St. Paul Central High School, and a freshman at the college, was pulled from a small pond on the campus about 8:30 a.m. CST.

In a written statement, college President Peggy Williams said that the body was Jacobson's.

"We all grieve the loss of this bright young man -- an incredibly talented student with many close friends and so much potential," she wrote.

An on-campus vigil was planned for tonight.

Although the college president wrote that she "did not know 'Willie' personally, I feel as though I have lost a son."

Since Monday, friends and authorities had been searching for Jacobson, last seen leaving a party about 3 or 4 a.m. Sunday, Dave Maley, an Ithaca College spokesman, said.

According to a news release issued this morning by Ithaca police, a submerged body was recovered from a pond on Farm Road, and then taken to the Cayuga Medical Center morgue for an autopsy. The investigation is continuing, police said.

Police had been called Monday night after Jacobson's friends searched for him that day. Rescue workers searched briefly Monday evening, and then conducted aerial and ground searches of the rugged hillsides around the college Tuesday, Maley said.

Two ponds were to be searched today, he said Tuesday night.

"Ithaca is on a hillside, bounded by steep gorges on either side,'' Maley said then. "We're looking to see if he got lost on his way back [to his dorm] or whether he could have fallen on a hillside. There's a lot of heavy brush.''

Nighttime temperatures had been in the 40s recently, he said.

Jacobson would have had to walk about a half-mile from the party back to his dorm, Maley said. "We're widening the search area in case he got lost or misdirected."

Police said Jacobson had been known to hike the trails in the area.

The party's host reportedly directed Jacobson to a walking trail on the edge of campus, Maley said.

Jacobson was dressed as William Shakespeare for the themed party and was last seen wearing a white, long-sleeved dress shirt, navy-blue vest, black dress pants and black dress shoes.

Tynan Alexander of St. Paul has been one of Jacobson's best friends since they were in elementary school. "He was committed to academics and got good grades," Alexander said. "But he was all about having fun. ... He always got along with people and was good at finding what makes a person interesting. He knew how to get the best out of people and have fun.''

Friends in the Twin Cities and at Ithaca were keeping one another updated through Facebook.

There were feelings of concern and worry on the campus of 6,300 students, Maley said Tuesday. Friends were tacking up "missing person" posters and police were knocking on doors and canvassing neighborhoods, he said.

"There's no reason to suspect foul play," Maley said.

Jacobson's mother and brother arrived in Ithaca on Tuesday.

Missing college student's body found

April 30, 2008

New York State Police divers today recovered the submerged body of an Ithaca College freshman who had been missing since Sunday.

Ithaca Police Deputy Chief John Barber today announced that the divers recovered the body of William J. Jacobson, 19, of St. Paul., Minn., from a small pond located along Farm Road on the Ithaca College campus.

Jacobson was reported missing Sunday and was last seen between 3:30 and 4 a.m. Sunday, in the backyard of a home on Grandview Avenue in Ithaca, where he had attended a party, according to Ithaca College officials.

“The pond is on a direct line from where he was last seen to... his dorm room,” said college spokesman Dave Maley, adding that police do not suspect foul play. However an autopsy is being done at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca to determine the cause of death.

College public safety officials do not believe Jacobson’s death is linked to other suspicious river deaths around the country, including the death of 20-year-old Victor native Adam Falcon, who was found dead in the Grasse River in St. Lawrence County in November 2004. Two retired New York City detectives have been investigating the mysterious deaths of young men in rivers for 11 years and have recently gained national attention. According to the detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, the young men are believed to be victims of a group of serial killers. However, police doubt Falcon's death is linked to the others.

“Certainly they (police) are aware of the story that has been in the national news,” Maley said. “But there is no reason to believe it is connected.”

Jacobson’s death is still under investigation.

Ithaca College President Peggy R. Williams issued a statement today after hearing the news.

“We all grieve the loss of this bright young man— an incredibly talented student with many close friends and so much potential,” she said. “The loss of a student who had so much to contribute becomes a loss, not just for the campus community but for all who knew him. Although I did not know Willie personally, I feel as though I have lost a son.”

Williams said a vigil is slated to take place at 8 tonight at Ithaca College’s Muller Chapel. Counselors and chaplains have been made available to assist students and other members of the campus community.

Body recovered in search for missing student

April 30th, 2008
A vigil will be held at 8 p.m. tonight in Muller Chapel for Ithaca College freshman William Jacobson, whose body investigators recoverered this morning in the Farm Road pond. Jacobson had been missing since Sunday morning.

A State Police Dive team found the body around 9:30 a.m. today in the Farm Road pond, said Dave Maley, associate director of media relations.

An ambulance arrived on the scene around 9:30 a.m., according to a Bangs Ambulance representative, and left a short time later. The body was transported by ambulance to Cayuga Medical Center for an autopsy. Maley said the search has concluded.

Senior Sara Howard drove to campus around 9:45 a.m. She said she thought she saw officials remove the body from the water.

"They got it underneath the sheet pretty quickly and moved it over the Jersey barrier," she said. "It was hidden from sight for a while but then I could see it was stretched out on a stretcher."

There will be a press conference at 1 p.m. in the main lobby of the Public Safety building.

Officials rule out foul play in death of studentBy Nathaniel Weixel Senior Writer | April 30th, 2008

There is no indication of foul play in the death of Ithaca College freshman William Jacobson, Ithaca and New York state police officials said at a press conference today in the Office of Public Safety lobby.

A State Police dive team found Jacobson’s body in about eight feet of water in the Farm Road pond this morning. Acting Ithaca Police Chief Edward Vallely said there were no visible injuries on the body, and the location of the pond suggested Jacobson was taking a normal route back to his residence hall.

Jacobson was last seen leaving a party at 105 Grandview Ave. around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Capt. Lawrence Jackman of the New York State Police said there were other factors that have led investigators to rule out any suspicious circumstances.

“There’s no indication there was trouble at the party,” Jackman said. “The path he was on is what we would expect he would be on returning to his residence.”

A vigil will be held for Jacobson at 8 p.m. in Muller Chapel.

Student remembered for insight and intellect
By Nathaniel Weixel Senior Writer | May 1st, 2008

The campus community today is mourning the sudden loss of one of its students.

At a vigil last night, those who knew William Jacobson said they remembered the freshman from St. Paul, Minn., as full of joy and a true intellectual, a quality his mother said earned him the nickname “the Professor.” Jacobson was found dead yesterday in the Farm Road pond after he went missing early Sunday morning.

From the tiered steps of Muller Chapel, hundreds of students, faculty, family members and friends overflowed into the hallway and outside, holding candles and filling the lawn in front of the pond with the soft glow of the flickering light. Many were moved to tears as stories and memories of “Willie” were shared.

Freshman Marissa DeMello said she only knew Jacobson through others. It speaks to the strength of the Ithaca College community, she said, that so many people attended to support Jacobson’s family and friends.

“Not everyone knew him but everyone here cares,” she said. “This isn’t just a campus where everyone’s just a number. … We’re all much closer than we really think.”

Jacobson, a 19-year-old writing major, went missing Sunday after leaving a party at 105 Grandview Ave. around 3:30 a.m. He was last seen by senior CJ Knowles, who pointed him toward a walking trail that would lead him to the road back to campus.

“I walked him to the foot of that trail, and I guess that’s the last anybody saw of him,” Knowles said.

Jacobson’s friends said they became concerned when he failed to meet them for dinner Monday night. After they contacted his Terrace 11 resident assistant, Jacobson was reported missing to the Office of Public Safety.

An intensive ground and aerial search began Tuesday with officials from the New York State Police, the New York State Forest Rangers, the New York State Environmental Conservation Police, the Ithaca Fire Department and Public Safety The New York State dive team was called in yesterday to search campus ponds. At 9:30 a.m. yesterday, members of the dive team recovered Jacobson’s body from the Farm Road pond. He was taken to Cayuga Medical Center where authorities said an autopsy will be performed. They said they do not know when it will be completed.

At a press conference yesterday, Ithaca College President Peggy R. Williams was brought to tears when she spoke about the initial optimism and hope she had at the beginning of the search. She said Jacobson was a great student, “academically and non-academically,” who was looking forward to coming back to the college in the fall.

Williams said Jacobson’s death has affected the entire campus.

“A lot of people didn’t know him,” she said. “But I think we’re such a small, close community — just 6,000 people — that these things just hit us.”

At the conference, Ithaca and New York State Police officials said there is nothing that would lead them to believe the death was suspicious.

Acting Ithaca Police Chief Edward Vallely said there were no visible injuries on the body, and the location of the pond suggested Jacobson was taking a normal route back to his residence hall.

Capt. Lawrence Jackman of the New York State Police said there were other factors that have led investigators to rule out any suspicious circumstances.

“There’s no indication there was trouble at the party,” Jackman said. “The path he was on is what we would expect he would be on returning to his residence.”

The last student death on campus took place in July 2005, when then-junior Kimberly Chu was found dead in her Terrace 9 dorm room. Three months earlier, in April 2005, another student death occurred on campus when then-sophomore Morgan Potter fell from his room on the eighth floor of the West Tower. There was no foul play suspected in either incident.

Jacobson’s mother said everyone at the vigil should take the joy her son had and live a life that would do him proud.

“That is my job now,” she said. “It’s my job to go out and let everyone know that there is a light that has been taken from us.”

Many students at the vigil shared stories about Jacobson’s penchant for deep conversation. One recalled spending a night outside of Boothroyd Hall with Jacobson, watching the sun come up.

“When you watch the sunrise with someone you always have really deep conversations,” he said. “Willie used to have deep conversations no matter what’s going on. We all know that intellectually, he was light-years ahead of us.”

Autopsy Determines Ithaca College Student Accidentally Drowned

ITHACA, NY— According to the Ithaca Police Department, preliminary autopsy results indicate that Ithaca College freshman William Jacobson’s death was due to an accidental drowning. While the full autopsy report is not yet complete, police have ruled out foul play as the cause of death.

Jacobson was reported missing on the night of Monday, April 28, after having last been seen early the previous morning leaving an off-campus party. An extensive ground and aerial search was conducted by a number of local law enforcement and emergency services agencies. On Wednesday morning, his body was recovered by divers from the New York State Police in the Farm Road Pond on campus. The pond is located on the route he likely would have taken to return to his Terrace 11 residence hall room.

“The outpouring of love and support that has been generated among the Ithaca College community in the wake of this tragedy has truly been remarkable,” said Ithaca College President Peggy R. Williams. “Students, faculty and staff—those who knew Willie and those who only knew of him—came together as one on Wednesday night to pay tribute to his memory and to support one another. We once again extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to his many friends as they grieve over this loss.”

Ithaca College will continue to provide support to students and other members of the campus community through the Counseling Center and the Office of the Chaplains.

A resident of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jacobson, 19, was a writing major at Ithaca College. The autopsy was conducted on Thursday, May 1, by Dr. James Terzian of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.
