Daniel Mosteller is a homebody, his mother says, so it’s alarming to her and investigators that no one has heard from him in a week.

“He’s never away from home for more than a couple of hours, and he calls me 5,000 times a day,” Nancy Mosteller stated. “It’s not like him to be gone this long without being in touch with somebody.”

Nancy said she last saw her 20-year-old son last Monday night, April 21, when he left the family’s 43 Pine St. residence in Marion to go to Asheville with friends.

She reported him missing Wednesday, prompting a search by McDowell County sheriff’s deputies that has gone in different directions.

“We’re getting conflicting information, so we’re still trying to establish where he was last seen,” said Capt. Dudley Greene of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

Nancy stated that she’s talked to Daniel’s friends and none of them have had contact with her son. She’s desperate for any information about him.

“I’m putting his picture up in store windows right now,” she stated in a telephone interview Monday.

Greene added that, at this point, the possibility of foul play cannot be ruled in or ruled out.

“Anytime you’ve not heard from somebody in a week, you start to develop concerns,” he stated.

Daniel is described as a white male who stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs approximately 120 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information concerning his whereabouts is asked to call the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office at 652-4000 or McDowell County Crimestoppers at 65-CRIME. With Crimestoppers, your identity remains anonymous, and you could receive a cash reward.

Authorities believe body that of missing Marion man

The search for a missing Marion man is now a "probable homicide" investigation, authorities say.

Daniel Edward Mosteller, 20, of 43 Pine St. was last seen on Monday night, April 21, when he left his residence to go to Asheville with friends. His mother, Nancy, reported him missing the following Wednesday.

Since that time, authorities have been interviewing witnesses and chasing down potential leads that took them to other counties.

During their investigation, according to Capt. Dudley Greene of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office, Barnardsville in Madison County became an "area of interest."

Officers unearthed Mosteller from a shallow grave in Barnardsville between Weaverville and Mars Hill Thursday.

The property where the victim was buried belongs to family members of an associate of Mosteller, Greene stated. That associate was being questioned at deadline Thursday.

"We knew these people owned some land in Madison County, but we did not know where it was," said the captain. "Deputies in Madison County researched that for us and found the property."

Greene added that authorities then discovered some evidence at the scene that led them to believe it was the place where Mosteller was buried.

Members of the McDowell and Madison sheriff's departments, the Marion Police Department and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation exhumed the body early Thursday afternoon.

"We believe it's (Mosteller)," Greene stated. "All indications point to that."

He added that, at this time, it's not clear how the victim died or where the crime took place.

"We're still sorting out details," he said.

The captain does contend that the killing was likely to have been drug related.

He believes Mosteller was murdered on Monday, April 21, the night his mother last reported seeing him.

Mosteller's body was sent for autopsy in Winston-Salem. As of deadline Thursday, no arrests had been made.

Also assisting in the investigation were members of the Burke County Sheriff's Department.

Murder charge follows discovery of missing man's body

published May 2, 2008 12:15 am

ASHEVILLE – A Marion man faces murder charges for allegedly stabbing another man to death while driving on Interstate 40 near Asheville and then burying his body under the porch of an abandoned house in Madison County, investigators said Friday.

Buncombe County Sheriff’s deputies charged Dwayne Hoyte Dockery, 41, of Wayne Hyatt Drive, Marion, with first-degree murder in the death of Daniel Edward Mosteller, 20, according to warrants at the Buncombe County Magistrate's Office.

Mosteller had been reported missing since April 21 by family members in McDowell County. His body was discovered Thursday beneath the porch of an abandoned house in the Paint Fork community of Madison County, according to Madison County Sheriff John Ledford.

McDowell County investigators suspected Dockery in Mosteller’s death, Buncombe County sheriff’s Lt. Ross Dillingham said. They turned him over to authorities in Buncombe County for questioning Thursday night when they determined the alleged killing took place near Asheville, he said.

“An altercation took place in the car at which time the victim was stabbed. The suspect then, at some point after that incident, drove to Madison County and disposed of the body,” said Dillingham.

The stabbing happened on April 21 while Dockery, who was driving, and Mosteller were en route from Marion to Asheville, Dillingham said.

The two knew each other, but Dillingham said he didn’t know the nature of their relationship.

McDowell County sheriff’s Capt. Dudley Greene said on Thursday the case “was drug-related” and that the suspect had recently been released from prison.

Mosteller’s body was discovered in a two-feet-deep grave at a house about 100 yards off Hamburg Road in Madison County.

McDowell County investigators asked for help from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday morning and were able to find Mosteller’s body because of the suspect’s link to the Paint Fork area, Ledford said.

Dockery has an extensive criminal history in McDowell County, Greene said.

“We’ve had extensive dealings with him,” he said, including drug charges and at least one case involving violence.

Dillingham praised the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office for linking Dockery to Madison and Buncombe counties.

An ambulance removed Mosteller’s remains from the scene at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, while detectives from Madison and McDowell counties and agents from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation continued to examine the scene.

The property was littered with Mason jars and trash from former tenants.

A door on the left side of the porch foundation led to the grave, dug in the red clay.
